ANI Experiences survey

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be mailed to you via Special:Emailuser.

Second Boer War

Can you take a look at the Second Boer War article? I cannot work out what is causing the the infobox to spill right across the screen but wonder if it was the change you made to the Template:Infobox military conflict (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Infobox_military_conflict&diff=628656290&oldid=612304565) to use Lua? Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in more than one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time, and that you have not been inactive from administrative tasks for a five year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. Further, following a community discussion in March of 2018, administrators suspended for inactivity who have not had any logged administrative activity for five years will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. — JJMC89 bot 00:03, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Help with Switcher gadget

Hello, Jackmcbarn! :)

I'm an interface admin at SqWiki. Today one of our users came to me asking for help because he used your user script for a switcher and it didn't work on him. It works for him on EnWiki but it doesn't on SqWiki. I thought maybe the module was outdated, which it was and I went ahead and updated it to match the latest version in EnWiki. Unfortunately it still didn't work. I then saw that our module lacked most of its subpages for specific countries (not to say all of them) and I was wondering if that was the reason for your user script not working but to be honest, I'm not sure. Before I go ahead and try importing countless of subpages, can you please take a look here and see if you understand what's going wrong? Thank you in advance! :)) - Klein Muçi (talk) 17:32, 9 July 2020 (UTC)

@Klein Muçi: It seems to work for me, although it seems to look slightly different than it does here. Did you get it fixed in the meantime, or is it still not working for you? Jackmcbarn (talk) 19:57, 26 July 2020 (UTC)

Complaints from User:AnomieBOT about Templates {{Twocopies}}, {{Whichmusic}}, {{Adddisamb}}

I see that you removed messages from User talk:AnomieBOT, which the bot appears to be logging to. The messages appear to have said that there were too many parameters in the templates. As you saw, those templates do not have parameters. They are a warning message, a decline message, and an informational message, respectively, for drafts. So my questions for you are first, whether you removed the bot log entries because the bot was confused, and, second, whether there is something I ought to do to the templates to avoid confusing the bot, or to get something to work. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:47, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

No: Template:Adddisamb does take one parameter, the name of the disambiguation list. As far as I know, it works correctly with one parameter. I don't do much programming with templates and don't try to do anything fancy with them. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:49, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

@Robert McClenon: It said they had too many transclusions, not too many parameters. When you use those templates, just make sure that you subst them, since they're never supposed to be transcluded. Jackmcbarn (talk) 16:30, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Thesoccerdagger and Shotgun Pete

Hi Jack

A friend of mine has a page about the (Canadian) National Soccer League (thecnsl.com). Whenever he makes a post on his page, Wikipedia's shotgun pete creates a page on wikipedia without any references to the creative source who put together the info.

I have been in regular contact with my friend who his thinking of giving up his pages due to this shotgun pete.

His pages a very resourceful and great fun for us who are looking for things about Canadian soccer history.

If you can help out it would be nice. I tried to edit the page about Hector Cribioli but messed it a little bit up.

The info has been taken from this page:

https://thecnsl.com/2020/08/03/great-players-hector-cribioli/

If you need more info let me know.

Thesoccerdagger — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 06:32, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

@Thesoccerdagger: That's quite a serious allegation, but you haven't substantiated it. Can you provide two pieces of evidence to back it up?
  1. A permalink or diff of one of Shotgun pete's edits where he adds content identical to what's on thecnsl.com without citing it
  2. A copy of the content from thecnsl.com saved by archive.org or a similar service prior to said permalink/diff, to prove who actually wrote it first (without this, even with the first piece of evidence, it's possible that it's actually thecnsl.com stealing from Wikipedia rather than the other way around)
Jackmcbarn (talk) 22:13, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
Really where did he get his information on José Testas, Robin Megraw, Jim Galloway (soccer), Jimmy Douglas (Canadian soccer), etc from? There is content on the Hector Cribioli wiki page what is not even found on the CNSL blog page. The player's article on the cnsl.com website doesn't even provide sources, but the wiki one has numerous reliable secondary sources to support it.

If he wants to include a source to the wiki page he can by all means and I never reverted any attempts. I originally did provide links to the blog page, but the operator believes only he has the right of ownership to CNSL content and got belligerent and warned me not to provide his website as a source. I have evidence to support that he originally acknowledged me for referencing his page and even requested that I add information from his article to the wiki one regarding footballer Billy Telford. Here is the text from my talk page:

"Hi Shotgun Pete
As you are doing a proper job linking to articles on my pages, it is ok that you update wikipedia with info from my new article about Billy Telford.I will let you know if there is something wrong. "

thecnslThecnsl (talk) 11:53, 29 January 2020 (UTC)

You can check my talk page and it's recorded in the history section. If you look at the page history of Billy Telford I wrote that he simply played in the league and I sourced the cnsl.com website. The source to the blog and info are still there. I have cited that website several times in the past in several articles for example Harry Gauss, Peter Pinizzotto, and there are more if you look at their wikipedia history records. The only reason I stopped because he told me to stop. A lot of the content I provided in CNSL related articles are supported by reliable secondary sources not found even in some of his articles.
If he is accusing me of stealing from him why did he contact me in order to thank me and request that I add content from his blog to the wiki page? For example where did he get his info on José Testas, and Robin Megraw when both of those wiki articles were created before his pages. The creation of those wiki pages are recorded in their history section, while the dates of his articles are dated much later. If the operator wants to provide his website as a source I have no problem with that. Not to mention the user Thesoccerdagger added the website as a source to the article Olinto Sampaio Rubini and removed it shortly after. The only contribution I did was make a small correction and added a reliable secondary source which every wiki user does. If they are accusing me of stealing by not providing the cnsl.com as a source, why did user thesoccerdagger remove it from an article I didn't even create and only made a small correction by adding a source.

Shotgun pete (talk) 01:18, 7 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jack

There was no page about f ex Hector Cribioli on Wikipedia before the post on the thecnsl.com site. There are many, many examples. Any chance you can keep an eye on this for us?

My friend gave Shotgun Pete ok to update wikipedia pages if he linked to the thecnsl.com pages which he is not doing. We who form a community around these pages hope that Shotgun Pete will know to stay away now from my friend's pages now that we have put a focus on this. Any other way we can report the behaviour of Shotgun Pete and involve others to follow up so he stops copying posts from thecnsl.com to wikipedia without linking to it in the future? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 20:50, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Examples:

thecnsl.com post page about Hector Cribioli 3/8/2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/08/03/great-players-hector-cribioli/. Shotgun Pete straight away creates a duplicate page on wikipedia.

thecnsl.com post page about Jose Testas on 30/7/2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/07/30/great-players-jose-testas/ . Shotgun Pete updates wikipedia page about Joes Testas's career in Canada the next day.

thecnsl.com post page about Sergio Clerici 30/7/2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/07/30/great-players-sergio-clerici/ . Shotgun Pete updates wikipedia about Sergio Clerici's career in Canada same day.

thecnsl.com post page about Joao Jorge 18/6/2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/06/18/great-players-joao-jorge/ . Shotgun Pete updates wikipedia pages about Joao Jorge's career in Canada on 22/06/2020.

These are just some examples but just shows where he gets his "inspiration". In the Canadian soccer community Shotgun Pete is famous for doing this stuff. We are trying to have a community that work together to discover forgotten parts about our soccer history. Wikipedia will never be the go-to-place-for-that. We need guys who do the hard work of reesearch and a guy like Shotgun Pete is working against that. If you can help us stop this guy then that would be great. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 21:23, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

@Thesoccerdagger: Okay, here's what I see:
It looks to me like all of Shotgun pete's edits there have sources cited, even though they don't include thecnsl.com. Are you saying that he included material from thecnsl.com even though he only cited other sources? If so, can you point out a specific section of one of those diffs where he did so? Also, do you have any archive links of the material from thecnsl.com saved before the Wikipedia article was written? WordPress lets you backdate posts, so unless you have them, it's possible that your friend stole the content from here and then backdated it to deceive us. Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:56, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
Hi Jack

Examples: thecnsl.com post page about Jose Testas on 30/7/2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/07/30/great-players-jose-testas/. The wiki article created on December 6, 2015, thecnsl.com contains no sources.

thecnsl.com post page about Robin Megraw created on May 29, 2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/05/29/great-players-robin-megraw/. The wiki article created on April 17, 2014, and content about NSL added on April 2, 2020, thecnsl.com contains no sources.

thecnsl.com post page about Jim Galloway created on May 21, 2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/05/21/great-players-jimmy-galloway/. The wiki article created on May 4, 2020, thecnsl.com contains no sources

thecnsl.com post page about Olinto Rubini created on June 13, 2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/06/13/great-players-olinto-rubini/. The wiki article created on January 11. 2013, thecnsl.com contains no sources

thecnsl.com post page about Jimmy Douglas created on February 18, 2020 https://thecnsl.com/2020/02/18/jim-douglas/. The wiki article created on July 9. 2006, thecnsl.com contains no sources

thecnsl.com post page about Corcel Blair created on November 19, 2019 https://thecnsl.com/2019/11/19/great-players-corcel-blair/. The wiki article created on October 21. 2017, thecnsl.com contains no sources

There numerous examples where the operator gets his "inspiration" from existing wikipedia articles and doesn't even provide references to the sources. All of my articles provide reliable secondary sources and in the past I have cited thecnsl.com as a source as the operator has admitted and even encouraged me to put his content on wikipedia. There are other sources to use as a inspiration to start a wikipedia article and then credit as a reliable source.Again why would he thank me and encourage to put his content on wikipedia? Why would I suddenly stop using his website as a source? The only reason I stopped sourcing the cnsl.com was because the operator told me to stop. I have a saved email conversion with him when he got belligerent after I sourced a wiki article from his website. So he is a liar and first of all the "Canadian soccer community" highly appreciates wikipedia because without it there is barely any content on Canadian soccer so stop with the libel. Now apparently he has "changed" his mind once more and wants his work cited. As a result the Hector Cribioli article contains a link to the website not to mention the wiki article actually contains numerous reliable secondary sources which the cnsl.com page contains zero. Once more Thesoccerdagger why did you add the website as a source to the article Olinto Sampaio Rubini and removed it shortly after?

Shotgun pete (talk) 10:25, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jack
I'm trying to understand this all. I look at the Jose Testa example Special:Diff/950808290/971255033. The page was clearly created long before the cnsl.com page and the only original difference was that it didn't contained the fact he played with Montreal Castors. So I updated the article with that information, but that information was actually contained in a source already in use by the article. The source being https://web.archive.org/web/20170709170112/http://416news.com/apos-cumprir-missao-da-vida-baixinho-quer-morrer-em-paz-sem-dores/, but I decided to use another reliable secondary source (Globe and Mail) to support that claim because wikipedia standards ask for reliable sources. So that information about the Montreal Castors was already present in the internet before the cnsl.com operator wrote that article. He is not providing any new content or any specific reliable secondary sources in his articles so work is required on behalf of the wikipedia editor to find the source and use it.
The other example of Sergio Clerici Special:Diff/933849248/970371349. The wiki article was created on August 12, 2008 and the cnsl.com article was created on July 30, 2020 another example of a older wiki article. The cnsl.com article and wiki article are vastly different. All I wrote on the wiki article is that he played in league, team name, and the date and provided a reliable secondary source that's basic wikipedia material. Technically even if he promoted (and he has as shown by my talk page) the idea of using his website as a source and for material it won't work. I pretty sure Jack that you know that his website isn't a reliable one by a long shot by wikipedia standards. The cnsl.com website wouldn't pass as a reliable source it's just a blog that relies heavily on books by Colin Jose, various newspapers, Robin Glover, and even Wikipedia articles. The operator even believes he owns content or is the original source on NSL/CNSL league tables, club and personal, and even the wikipedia soccer seasons format used in wiki articles. All you need are primary sources to confirm that basic info, and the league is still in existence through the successor league the Canadian Soccer League, which can provide info on that.
The João Jorge wiki article was written later as to the cnsl.com article. The wiki one contains basic information (date, club, league, achievements) supported by reliable secondary sources while the cnsl.com goes a little in depth, but again no specific reliable sources to support it. So what no wiki editor or anybody else can write a basic objective article with reliable sources on João Jorge only the cnsl.com operator has that right of a monopoly? The cnsl.com operator doesn't have a copyright on newspaper articles. The Hector Cribioli was written later but again contains basic materiel and goes more in depth with reliable sources provided. The cnsl.com blog post gives basic with no references to support the basic material. I provided the cnsl.com source later to credit the operator as now he demands credit. Earlier as shown by my talk page he acknowledged and even encouraged me to use his website. I always cited his pages before he became unreasonable and ordered me to stop. I have the facebook conversion saved on my email to support his unreasonable actions as evidence.
I have no problem citing his website as a source, but again it doesn't qualify as a reliable secondary source. The cnsl.com is a just a blog with information taken from based on Colin Jose, Robin Glover, various newspapers, and wikipedia content what's not even sourced to support his articles. I have no problem altering the information on the articles has long as if it contains reliable secondary and even primary sources.

Shotgun pete (talk) 1:03, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

I think that about wraps this up then. @Thesoccerdagger: Do you disagree with any of Shotgun pete's claims above? If not, then I don't think any wrongdoing has occurred, and there's nothing to be done here. Jackmcbarn (talk) 01:07, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi

I think we probably both see that Shotgun Pete is deeply obsessed by someones blog. Maybe we all can agree on him staying away from it from now on? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 20:30, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

@Thesoccerdagger: No, only you see that, and I cannot agree on that. As far as I can see, Shotgun pete has done nothing wrong whatsoever, and you've been throwing accusations that have turned out to be completely unfounded. Jackmcbarn (talk) 20:36, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

I am the editor of thecnsl.com and have been tipped of about the messages here. I do not want to be involved in this dispute. However, as you seem to be some kind of judge of right and wrong here I would like to tell you about the way he has contacted me via fake mail and facebook accounts. It is just a small blog and I want to enjoy doing it without harrasment. Feel free to contact me via the contact info on my website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thecnsl (talkcontribs) 21:33, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

@Thecnsl: you seem to be some kind of judge of right and wrong here I'm really not though. I'm just an editor here. I don't even know how I ended up in the middle of this. he has contacted me via fake mail and facebook accounts Again, a serious allegation but with no proof. Please provide some concrete evidence. Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:41, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

thecnsl.com makes post about Attilio Galassini on July 28. Look at what happens after that on Wikipedia and who it is. Someone is madly obsessed about a page he then slags off :-))) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 21:41, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

@Thesoccerdagger: I'll ask again: do you have any proof that the article on thecnsl.com wasn't backdated, like an archive link from before it was on Wikipedia? Jackmcbarn (talk) 21:46, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Check the twitter account of thecnsl.com and you will get proof there as well that the post about Hector Cribioli is from 3/8/2020. Why are you taking such a strong stance against a small blog? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 22:39, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

As said before I don't like this dispute. The way that guy is behaving is not ok. You have taken his side from the start. Those of us who run small blogs and are not used to this platform can't fight back due to moderators like you who love Wikipedia. It is not what I thought Wikipedia was about. It is not ok what he is doing with contacting me via false mail adresses and facebook accounts. Where I live it is against the law and he has been reported. I have offered that you contact me via my web page. I have photos of of the messages and mails. That you take your high stance says a lot about Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thecnsl (talkcontribs) 22:55, 9 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Jack
I'm sorry the way this conversion is going I'm trying to be civil and provide a proper defense and ultimately come to some reasonable conclusion to this. The article about the English wiki Attilio Galassini is newer than the cnsl.com page, but the Italian wiki article is older and created on December 21, 2010. So there was already content about the player before the cnsl.com article was created, and there are numerous other sources about the player. All I did again was write a basic (year, team name, league, achievement) English article with reliable secondary sources, and later I even included a source (not a reliable one) to the cnsl.com article to satisfy the operator. Once more does the cnsl.com operator have a monopoly on NSL/CNSL content? Does he own the copyright to the newspaper articles? Their are many blog sites which contain basic player info of various leagues, and yet there exist many basic wiki articles about players that don't reference an unreliable source (blog site) but use reliable secondary sources.
First of all no one on wikipedia is forcing that site to close down. So both soccerdagger and the operator are exaggerating and lying. Second the operator is a hypocrite because he hasn't explained why is it permissible for his website to contain player articles (Robin Megraw, José Testas, Corcel Blair, Attilio Galassini, etc) on older existing wiki articles, but when an editor from wikipedia wants to include basic NSL/CNSL info from a reliable secondary source in order to create a new article that is a problem. For the second time Soccerdagger hasn't responded to the question about player Olinto Sampaio Rubini? They both claim that the cnsl.com website is purely for fun so why the outrage? No editor from wikipedia is getting publicly recognized or paid for their contributions! None of your articles provide specific reliable sources and you have no copyright to the newspaper articles or league info. No to mention there are numerous player articles on the cnsl.com website with no wikipedia articles. To me it sounds like the operator wishes to make some profit off this stuff if it's all for fun then there is no issue
Finally stop with the libel and ad hominems. Just answer the questions like I said earlier twice I have no problem citing his website as a source, but again it doesn't qualify as a reliable secondary source. The cnsl.com is a just a blog with information taken from Colin Jose, Robin Glover, various newspapers, and wikipedia content what's not even sourced to support his articles. I have no problem altering the information on the articles has long as if it contains reliable secondary and even primary sources.

Every day I log into wikipedia they beg for financial support. I have the samllest of all websites with 36 followers on twitter. You accept that Wikipedia steals my stuff. You block me. When I put up my small site about Canadian Soccer history I didn¨t know I had to fight with mad Wikipedia people. It is just a blog! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 23:21, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

Shotgun Pete

I have a blog with 36 followers on twitter. Why does a wikipedia guy copy every thing I do and you accept it? How do I challenge you as I don't know who you are? Where do I find you outside of you hiding behind wikipedia? Where is your blog? Where are your 36 followers? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thesoccerdagger (talkcontribs) 23:42, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

@Thesoccerdagger: I don't want to be in the middle of this dispute anymore. If you have any more issues with Shotgun pete, make another thread at WP:ANI. Do not post about this matter on my talk page again. Jackmcbarn (talk) 00:46, 21 August 2020 (UTC)

Greetings and potential help

Hey I come across your work on technical geography templates that seem really neat. So I attempted to create one myself. Here is the work I started. But honestly I found out the hard way that I am still a learner and the latitude / longitude step sounds really tough for me. Can you maybe help me out on the project? Jhenderson 777 05:37, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jhenderson777: I assume that the problem is that marks aren't displaying at the correct location on the map. Where did you get the formulas for x and y? Jackmcbarn (talk) 05:39, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
Yes exactly. That is most likely the problem. I got the formula for x and y on the United States one. I kinda figured that one wouldn’t be right. But was assuming I could maybe understand it later on to fix it. But not yet so far. Jhenderson 777 11:32, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
@Jhenderson777: Here's the problem with that approach:
As you can see, those two images don't line up because they don't use the same projection, so you can't just copy the formula from one to the other. I checked where the image came from to resolve this by finding the right projection, but I noticed another problem. The image is listed on Commons as being available under a free license, but I don't see anything on the website where it came from that backs up this claim, so it looks like it may not even be allowed to be used like this. Jackmcbarn (talk) 17:42, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
So do you delete the png one too. That where it came from? It's been on Wikipedia forever!!! Jhenderson 777 17:46, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
Sorry I wasn't clear. You do realize that image is a derivative of another Wikimedia Commons image. Right? Here it is. Jhenderson 777 17:51, 8 August 2020 (UTC)
@Jhenderson777: Ah, no I didn't, because derivatives of other Commons images are supposed to be tagged as such, and that one wasn't, though I've now fixed that. However, that brought to light another problem: just copying a PNG into an SVG doesn't actually make it a vector graphic, so there was no point to doing so. Jackmcbarn (talk) 18:00, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

I apologize for my technical stupidity lol. I don't care if one image is gone for the other. As long as I can figure out a map similar to like this article has: Fortune 1000. Can it be done? Jhenderson 777 18:08, 8 August 2020 (UTC)

@Jhenderson777: It's really hard to reverse engineer the exact parameters of a map projection just from the finished image. I'd recommend you do one of two things:
  1. Ask the author of that image what projection parameters they used to make it, then update Module:Location map/data/megaregion of United States with their answer.
  2. Go to Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop and ask for a new location map image to be created based on File:Usa edcp location map.svg or File:Usa_edcp_relief_location_map.png (keeping the same projection) that has the information from File:MapofEmergingUSMegaregions.png in it.

switcher-container class

Hi, I have some questions about your very nice switcher-container class. (1) Outside an infobox, is there a way to make text flow around it? (2) Outside an infobox, is there a way to present it as a figure with an overall caption? (3) Is there a way to suppress the "show all" option? Thanks. Zerotalk 14:33, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

See that (1) and (2) can be done using a frame. (3) remains a question. Zerotalk 15:54, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

"{{circa}}"

I appreciate your trying to help me with the strange display I keep getting; I did (with a couple of interruptions) manage to create a small screenshot of what I keep seeing. But I haven't been able to post it either as png or pdf, in that Village pump discussion, or here on your talk page. In the meantime I changed both instances at Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to the spelled-out "circa", not only because of the line split on my monitor, but also that part of the sentence is cluttered with alphabetical footnotes, so deciphering the whole thing was confusing. Please let me know if you can figure out why my ^c ^v won't do anything here at Wikipedia - thanks. (I'm off here now for the next 18-20 hours.) Milkunderwood (talk) 04:29, 2 September 2020 (UTC)

Magit Notability requirements

You've dismissed the references for [1] as not being independent sources. However there are several including LWN (the online paper of record for free and open source software). If we included articles from Opensource.com [2] would that meet eligibility? There are other VCS front-ends described in Wikipedia which should otherwise be marked as not notable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by AlexWasFirst (talkcontribs) 10:47, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

@AlexWasFirst: LWN is definitely a good source. If you can find one or two more good sources to go along with it, I'd consider that to establish notability. I'm not sure whether opensource.com qualifies; I'd have to look closer at it, but it certainly won't hurt to add that one too if you didn't already. As for other VCS front-ends, take note of WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Jackmcbarn (talk) 14:47, 18 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jackmcbarn: Thanks - I'll see what I can dig up. It's certainly well known in the wider Emacs community but most of that is carried in social media and discussion sites. I'm guessing individual blog posts of random Emacs users don't carry that much weight. AlexWasFirst (talk)
@Jackmcbarn: I've added a bunch of sources, including statistics on popularity, a number of indicators for breadth of usage, and a link to a presentation by Emacs' current maintainer on the project. If you could let me know how you find the current state, that would be great :) Tecosaur (talk) 15:01, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
@Tecosaur: A few notes/questions:
  • YouTube videos generally aren't appropriate to reference from Wikipedia articles. Do you think any of the exceptions at WP:YOUTUBE apply to the ones you added?
  • Per WP:RSSELF, I don't think most of the new links you added count as reliable. Per Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established expert on the subject matter, [3] does (although that may not be "significant coverage"), and [4] and [5] might, but the rest almost certainly don't.
  • Which link goes to "a presentation by Emacs' current maintainer on the project"? I thought the current maintainer was Richard Stallman, and the only reference to anything of his that I saw was the mailing list post.
  • Things like the amount of funding on Kickstarter or the number of stars on GitHub never confer notability by themselves.
Jackmcbarn (talk) 17:03, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
@Jackmcbarn: Thanks for getting back to me.
  • Re: YouTube videos generally aren't appropriate to reference from Wikipedia articles. Do you think any of the exceptions at WP:YOUTUBE apply to the ones you added?
    • That link took me to a pretty short sub-(sub?)section, I couldn't see any links to execptions (sorry if I've just been a bit blind), but I did look at the links for exclusion critera and couldn't see anything that excluded the use of these videos. I imagined the manner in which the referenes are used would be significant --- it was with this assumption in mind that I added the links, as they are intended to demonstrate that the existance of videos dedicated to Magit, not for any particular content of the video (which I imagine is where the objection stems from?).
  • Re: "Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established expert on the subject matter"
    • This is a interesting one. I can certainly see how this applies generally, however when it comes to software (particularly of the OSS kind) this seems a bit of a grey area. Do you limit yourself to just maintainers? That's a very small group. Is a user who has used Emacs for decades an expert? How many years are necessary? I'd be tempted to say that anyone who's used Emacs and Magit enough to write a technical post on them is by that demonstrating a level of expertise.
    • I'm guessing this sort of grey area is why WP:NSOFT has It is reasonable to allow relatively informal sources for free and open-source software, if significance can be shown, though I lack the experience to understand the nuance and specifics in how this applies
    • My hope was that the informallity of linked blog posts and youtube videos would be acceptable due to the significant impact of Magit indicated by their existance and the manner in which Magit is covered
  • Re: Which link goes to "a presentation by Emacs' current maintainer on the project"? I thought the current maintainer was Richard Stallman, and the only reference to anything of his that I saw was the mailing list post.
    • To quote from Emacs "Richard Stallman has remained the principal maintainer of GNU Emacs [...] John Wiegley was named maintainer in 2015 after a meeting with Stallman at MIT" (there's a mailing list link which announces this)
    • The reference in questio was a recording of an Emacs SF meetup where John Wiegley presented a 80 minute introduction to Magit [6]
  • Things like the amount of funding on Kickstarter or the number of stars on GitHub never confer notability by themselves.
    • I didn't expect they would, however as I see it they fit into the picture of a package that has a significant impact on people's workflow, sufficiently so that a large number of people have been inspired to financially support/contribute to the project. Does this seem reasonable?
  • Oh, also: Magit has inspired a number of derivative projects, [7] [8] [9] - do you think they'd be worth mentioning?
Tecosaur (talk) 17:44, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
@Tecosaur: Okay, with your reference from WP:NSOFT and other answers, I'm convinced that it would probably survive an AfD (WP:AFCPURPOSE), so I'm going to do some cleanup so that it complies with our standards and then accept it. Jackmcbarn (talk) 17:54, 20 September 2020 (UTC)
