ANI Experiences survey

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. Help with Switcher gadget

Hello, Jackmcbarn! :)

I'm an interface admin at SqWiki. Today one of our users came to me asking for help because he used your user script for a switcher and it didn't work on him. It works for him on EnWiki but it doesn't on SqWiki. I thought maybe the module was outdated, which it was and I went ahead and updated it to match the latest version in EnWiki. Unfortunately it still didn't work. I then saw that our module lacked most of its subpages for specific countries (not to say all of them) and I was wondering if that was the reason for your user script not working but to be honest, I'm not sure. Before I go ahead and try importing countless of subpages, can you please take a look here and see if you understand what's going wrong? Complaints from User:AnomieBOT about Templates {{Twocopies}}, {{Whichmusic}}, {{Adddisamb}}

I see that you removed messages from User talk:AnomieBOT, which the bot appears to be logging to. The messages appear to have said that there were too many parameters in the templates. As you saw, those templates do not have parameters. They are a warning message, a decline message, and an informational message, respectively, for drafts. So my questions for you are first, whether you removed the bot log entries because the bot was confused, and, second, whether there is something I ought to do to the templates to avoid confusing the bot, or to get something to work. No: Template:Adddisamb does take one parameter, the name of the disambiguation list. As far as I know, it works correctly with one parameter. I don't do much programming with templates and don't try to do anything fancy with them. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:49, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Thesoccerdagger and Shotgun Pete

Hi Jack

A friend of mine has a page about the (Canadian) National Soccer League (thecnsl.com). Whenever he makes a post on his page, Wikipedia's shotgun pete creates a page on wikipedia without any references to the creative source who put together the info.

I have been in regular contact with my friend who his thinking of giving up his pages due to this shotgun pete.

His pages a very resourceful and great fun for us who are looking for things about Canadian soccer history.

If you can help out it would be nice. I tried to edit the page about Hector Cribioli but messed it a little bit up.

@Thesoccerdagger: That's quite a serious allegation, but you haven't substantiated it. Can you provide two pieces of evidence to back it up?

1. A permalink or diff of one of Shotgun pete's edits where he adds content identical to what's on thecnsl.com without citing it
2. A copy of the content from thecnsl.com saved by archive.org or a similar service prior to said permalink/diff, to prove who actually wrote it first (without this, even with the first piece of evidence, it's possible that it's actually thecnsl.com stealing from Wikipedia rather than the other way around)

Really where did he get his information on José Testas, Robin Megraw, Jim Galloway (soccer), Jimmy Douglas (Canadian soccer), etc from? There is content on the Hector Cribioli wiki page what is not even found on the CNSL blog page. The player's article on the cnsl.com website doesn't even provide sources, but the wiki one has numerous reliable secondary sources to support it.

If he wants to include a source to the wiki page he can by all means and I never reverted any attempts. I originally did provide links to the blog page, but the operator believes only he has the right of ownership to CNSL content and got belligerent and warned me not to provide his website as a source. I have evidence to support that he originally acknowledged me for referencing his page and even requested that I add information from his article to the wiki one regarding footballer Billy Telford. Here is the text from my talk page:

"Hi Shotgun Pete

As you are doing a proper job linking to articles on my pages, it is ok that you update wikipedia with info from my new article about Billy Telford.I will let you know if there is something wrong. "

You can check my talk page and it's recorded in the history section. If you look at the page history of Billy Telford I wrote that he simply played in the league and I sourced the cnsl.com website. The source to the blog and info are still there. I have cited that website several times in the past in several articles for example Harry Gauss, Peter Pinizzotto, and there are more if you look at their wikipedia history records. The only reason I stopped because he told me to stop. A lot of the content I provided in CNSL related articles are supported by reliable secondary sources not found even in some of his articles.

If he is accusing me of stealing from him why did he contact me in order to thank me and request that I add content from his blog to the wiki page? For example where did he get his info on José Testas, and Robin Megraw when both of those wiki articles were created before his pages. The creation of those wiki pages are recorded in their history section, while the dates of his articles are dated much later. If the operator wants to provide his website as a source I have no problem with that. Not to mention the user Thesoccerdagger added the website as a source to the article Olinto Sampaio Rubini and removed it shortly after. The only contribution I did was make a small correction and added a reliable secondary source which every wiki user does. If they are accusing me of stealing by not providing the cnsl.com as a source, why did user thesoccerdagger remove it from an article I didn't even create and only made a small correction by adding a source.

There was no page about f ex Hector Cribioli on Wikipedia before the post on the thecnsl.com site. There are many, many examples. Any chance you can keep an eye on this for us?

My friend gave Shotgun Pete ok to update wikipedia pages if he linked to the thecnsl.com pages which he is not doing. We who form a community around these pages hope that Shotgun Pete will know to stay away now from my friend's pages now that we have put a focus on this. These are just some examples but just shows where he gets his "inspiration". In the Canadian soccer community Shotgun Pete is famous for doing this stuff. We are trying to have a community that work together to discover forgotten parts about our soccer history. Wikipedia will never be the go-to-place-for-that. We need guys who do the hard work of reesearch and a guy like Shotgun Pete is working against that. If you can help us stop this guy then that would be great. It looks to me like all of Shotgun pete's edits there have sources cited, even though they don't include thecnsl.com. Are you saying that he included material from thecnsl.com even though he only cited other sources? If so, can you point out a specific section of one of those diffs where he did so? Also, do you have any archive links of the material from thecnsl.com saved before the Wikipedia article was written? WordPress lets you backdate posts, so unless you have them, it's possible that your friend stole the content from here and then backdated it to deceive us. There numerous examples where the operator gets his "inspiration" from existing wikipedia articles and doesn't even provide references to the sources. All of my articles provide reliable secondary sources and in the past I have cited thecnsl.com as a source as the operator has admitted and even encouraged me to put his content on wikipedia. There are other sources to use as a inspiration to start a wikipedia article and then credit as a reliable source.Again why would he thank me and encourage to put his content on wikipedia? Why would I suddenly stop using his website as a source? The only reason I stopped sourcing the cnsl.com was because the operator told me to stop. I have a saved email conversion with him when he got belligerent after I sourced a wiki article from his website. So he is a liar and first of all the "Canadian soccer community" highly appreciates wikipedia because without it there is barely any content on Canadian soccer so stop with the libel. Now apparently he has "changed" his mind once more and wants his work cited. Hi Jack

I'm trying to understand this all. I look at the Jose Testa example Special:Diff/950808290/971255033. The page was clearly created long before the cnsl.com page and the only original difference was that it didn't contained the fact he played with Montreal Castors. So I updated the article with that information, but that information was actually contained in a source already in use by the article. The source being https://web.archive.org/web/20170709170112/http://416news.com/apos-cumprir-missao-da-vida-baixinho-quer-morrer-em-paz-sem-dores/, but I decided to use another reliable secondary source (Globe and Mail) to support that claim because wikipedia standards ask for reliable sources. So that information about the Montreal Castors was already present in the internet before the cnsl.com operator wrote that article. He is not providing any new content or any specific reliable secondary sources in his articles so work is required on behalf of the wikipedia editor to find the source and use it.

The other example of Sergio Clerici Special:Diff/933849248/970371349. The wiki article was created on August 12, 2008 and the cnsl.com article was created on July 30, 2020 another example of a older wiki article. The cnsl.com article and wiki article are vastly different. All I wrote on the wiki article is that he played in league, team name, and the date and provided a reliable secondary source that's basic wikipedia material. Technically even if he promoted (and he has as shown by my talk page) the idea of using his website as a source and for material it won't work. I pretty sure Jack that you know that his website isn't a reliable one by a long shot by wikipedia standards. The cnsl.com website wouldn't pass as a reliable source it's just a blog that relies heavily on books by Colin Jose, various newspapers, Robin Glover, and even Wikipedia articles. The operator even believes he owns content or is the original source on NSL/CNSL league tables, club and personal, and even the wikipedia soccer seasons format used in wiki articles. All you need are primary sources to confirm that basic info, and the league is still in existence through the successor league the Canadian Soccer League, which can provide info on that.

The João Jorge wiki article was written later as to the cnsl.com article. The wiki one contains basic information (date, club, league, achievements) supported by reliable secondary sources while the cnsl.com goes a little in depth, but again no specific reliable sources to support it. So what no wiki editor or anybody else can write a basic objective article with reliable sources on João Jorge only the cnsl.com operator has that right of a monopoly? The cnsl.com operator doesn't have a copyright on newspaper articles. The Hector Cribioli was written later but again contains basic materiel and goes more in depth with reliable sources provided. The cnsl.com blog post gives basic with no references to support the basic material. I provided the cnsl.com source later to credit the operator as now he demands credit. Earlier as shown by my talk page he acknowledged and even encouraged me to use his website. I always cited his pages before he became unreasonable and ordered me to stop. I have the facebook conversion saved on my email to support his unreasonable actions as evidence.

I have no problem citing his website as a source, but again it doesn't qualify as a reliable secondary source. The cnsl.com is a just a blog with information taken from based on Colin Jose, Robin Glover, various newspapers, and wikipedia content what's not even sourced to support his articles. I have no problem altering the information on the articles has long as if it contains reliable secondary and even primary sources.

I'm sorry the way this conversion is going I'm trying to be civil and provide a proper defense and ultimately come to some reasonable conclusion to this. The article about the English wiki Attilio Galassini is newer than the cnsl.com page, but the Italian wiki article is older and created on December 21, 2010. So there was already content about the player before the cnsl.com article was created, and there are numerous other sources about the player. All I did again was write a basic (year, team name, league, achievement) English article with reliable secondary sources, and later I even included a source (not a reliable one) to the cnsl.com article to satisfy the operator. Once more does the cnsl.com operator have a monopoly on NSL/CNSL content? Does he own the copyright to the newspaper articles? Their are many blog sites which contain basic player info of various leagues, and yet there exist many basic wiki articles about players that don't reference an unreliable source (blog site) but use reliable secondary sources.

First of all no one on wikipedia is forcing that site to close down. So both soccerdagger and the operator are exaggerating and lying. Second the operator is a hypocrite because he hasn't explained why is it permissible for his website to contain player articles (Robin Megraw, José Testas, Corcel Blair, Attilio Galassini, etc) on older existing wiki articles, but when an editor from wikipedia wants to include basic NSL/CNSL info from a reliable secondary source in order to create a new article that is a problem. For the second time Soccerdagger hasn't responded to the question about player Olinto Sampaio Rubini? They both claim that the cnsl.com website is purely for fun so why the outrage? No editor from wikipedia is getting publicly recognized or paid for their contributions! None of your articles provide specific reliable sources and you have no copyright to the newspaper articles or league info. No to mention there are numerous player articles on the cnsl.com website with no wikipedia articles. To me it sounds like the operator wishes to make some profit off this stuff if it's all for fun then there is no issue

As you can see, those two images don't line up because they don't use the same projection, so you can't just copy the formula from one to the other. I checked where the image came from to resolve this by finding the right projection, but I noticed another problem. The image is listed on Commons as being available under a free license, but I don't see anything on the website where it came from that backs up this claim, so it looks like it may not even be allowed to be used like this. @Jhenderson777: Ah, no I didn't, because derivatives of other Commons images are supposed to be tagged as such, and that one wasn't, though I've now fixed that. However, that brought to light another problem: just copying a PNG into an SVG doesn't actually make it a vector graphic, so there was no point to doing so. @Jhenderson777: It's really hard to reverse engineer the exact parameters of a map projection just from the finished image. I'd recommend you do one of two things:

1. Ask the author of that image what projection parameters they used to make it, then update Module:Location map/data/megaregion of United States with their answer.
2. Go to Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Map workshop and ask for a new location map image to be created based on File:Usa edcp location map.svg or File:Usa_edcp_relief_location_map.png (keeping the same projection) that has the information from File:MapofEmergingUSMegaregions.png in it.

Magit Notability requirements

You've dismissed the references for [1] as not being independent sources. However there are several including LWN (the online paper of record for free and open source software). If we included articles from Opensource.com [2] would that meet eligibility? Per Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established expert on the subject matter, [3] does (although that may not be "significant coverage"), and [4] and [5] might, but the rest almost certainly don't.
• Which link goes to "a presentation by Emacs' current maintainer on the project"? I thought the current maintainer was Richard Stallman, and the only reference to anything of his that I saw was the mailing list post.
• Things like the amount of funding on Kickstarter or the number of stars on GitHub never confer notability by themselves.

  • That link took me to a pretty short sub-(sub?)section, I couldn't see any links to execptions (sorry if I've just been a bit blind), but I did look at the links for exclusion critera and couldn't see anything that excluded the use of these videos. I imagined the manner in which the referenes are used would be significant --- it was with this assumption in mind that I added the links, as they are intended to demonstrate that the existance of videos dedicated to Magit, not for any particular content of the video (which I imagine is where the objection stems from?).
• Re: "Self-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established expert on the subject matter"
  • This is a interesting one. I can certainly see how this applies generally, however when it comes to software (particularly of the OSS kind) this seems a bit of a grey area. Do you limit yourself to just maintainers? That's a very small group. Is a user who has used Emacs for decades an expert? How many years are necessary? I'd be tempted to say that anyone who's used Emacs and Magit enough to write a technical post on them is by that demonstrating a level of expertise.
  • I'm guessing this sort of grey area is why WP:NSOFT has It is reasonable to allow relatively informal sources for free and open-source software, if significance can be shown, though I lack the experience to understand the nuance and specifics in how this applies
  • My hope was that the informallity of linked blog posts and youtube videos would be acceptable due to the significant impact of Magit indicated by their existance and the manner in which Magit is covered
