Talk pages consultation Phase 2 update

The Phase 2 of the talk pages consultation has begun. Several communities have already signed-up. This email is sent to every Phase 1 coordinator to provide you some updates.

If you prefer not to participate to the phase 2 as a coordinator, no worries: you can ignore that message, and you will not receive any message from us for the phase 2. In the future, we will only send messages to people who've listed their names on the phase 2 page. You've been very helpful for the phase 1 and we still thank you for your help. Can you forward this message to other people who may help?

Create a group or have it ready

Some groups are ready, some other are still under construction and we still miss some languages or wikis. We invite you to sign-up your community page for the phase 2.

We have two tables: one for under construction pages, the other one for ready-to-go pages. Under construction pages should be listed: we can help you to built it if needed. Those pages have to list the questions we have and should provide a link to the Phase 1 report.

Pages that are ready to be used have to be moved to the "Confirmed participant groups" section to that we can add them to the banner.

Banner and advertizing

When a community page is ready, we will help you to have it known. We are going to display a banner with link to the consultation on your wiki. We need some help to translate that banner (it is very short). We will not display a banner without translation to your community.

Don't forget to add a link to the consultation to any page on your wiki where people can see the information. You can also invite other wikis in your language to participate to one global page (like for Russian language).

Don't forget to post the information about Phase 2 on social medias related to your wiki(s), and ping people who participated to the phase 1.

Phase 1 report

The Phase 1 report is ready and communities should be aware if it. Please invite people to read it!

If you have any question, please contact me !

Template editor granted

Your account has been granted the "templateeditor" user permission, allowing you to edit templates and modules that have been protected with template protection. It also allows you to bypass the title blacklist, giving you the ability to create and edit editnotices. Before you use this user right, please read Wikipedia:Template editor and make sure you understand its contents. In particular, you should read the section on wise template editing and the criteria for revocation.

You can use this user right to perform maintenance, answer edit requests, and make any other simple and generally uncontroversial edits to templates, modules, and edinotices. You can also use it to enact more complex or controversial edits, after those edits are first made to a test sandbox, and their technical reliability as well as their consensus among other informed editors has been established. If you are willing to process edit requests on templates and modules, keep in mind that you are taking responsibility to ensure the edits have consensus and are technically sound.

This user right gives you access to some of Wikipedia's most important templates and modules; it is critical that you edit them wisely and that you only make edits that are backed up by consensus. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password.

If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

If you were granted the permission on a temporary basis you will need to re-apply for the permission a few days before it expires including in your request a permalink to the discussion where it was granted and a {{ping}} for the administrator who granted the permission. You can find the permalink in your rights log.

Talk pages consultation: final report published

Hello

Over the past six months, a big consultation was hosted on various wikis about talk pages. You have helped us to host those conversations on your wiki, and we want to thank you about your help. Without your assistance, it would not have been possible to achieve it.

We are happy to inform you that the the Phase 2 report is now published. Like every community member, you are more than welcomed to write your thoughts about this report on the talk page, and watchlist the project page.

The publication is an important step: now we have a direction and the Editing team is going to work on the talk pages project. The next steps will be presented at Wikimania, on Saturday August 17, at 14:00 UTC. The session will be livrstreamed and recorded.

Thank you again for your help and assistance. The success of this consultation would not have been possible without you.

Template:Infobox New York City Subway service

Hi, just thought I'd point out your change to Template:Infobox New York City Subway service has caused a few errors, such as Bowling Green–South Ferry shuttle, JFK Express & Culver Shuttle

Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 15:13, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

@KylieTastic: Thanks for telling me; I've tried to fix it. Jc86035 (talk) 15:17, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

West Coast Main Line RDT

I noted your edit tot West Coast Main Line. Given that there is a dispute over the position of the RDT, you may wish to add your 2p (or 2¢) worth at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject UK Railways#Position of the RDT, especially very large main-line ones: dispute resolution needed. Thank you. --John Maynard Friedman (talk) 11:50, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

Simplified Chinese in the ROC (Taiwan)

Quick thoughts- whereas in Mainland China, Xiandai Hanyu Cidian, Table of General Standard Chinese Characters, Xiandai Hanyu Guifan Cidian, and Cihai all show simplified and traditional Chinese, in ROC (Taiwan), there has only been limited use of simplified Chinese characters. All I'm asking for is specific evidence that the forms that are shown outside of the drop-down box are or have been used in the area. Romanizations inside the drop-down box are not as important- they are for the people that are hyper-interested. Anyway, that's the function of a dictionary, like Wiktionary. That's my thoughts, could be wrong. Geographyinitiative (talk) 13:34, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

@Geographyinitiative: I think it would be more appropriate to discuss on the template's talk page, where I've already made a comment. While I would agree that the reasoning for removing Simplified Chinese makes sense, there are a lot of situations where this could potentially become tricky and controversial (especially outside mainland China and Taiwan, and especially for romanizations of rarer dialects).
Also, the note in the documentation wasn't there until July this year, and it's not clear to me if there was any consensus for this change. Jc86035 (talk) 13:39, 21 September 2019 (UTC)
I understand your concerns about the recentness of it- I will make comments there. Thanks for your time. Geographyinitiative (talk) 13:43, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Template talk ; Rhymney Railway

If you look at the only item on that talk page, there is an unsigned suggestion for certain closed stations to be added to the line template, which appears not to have been acted upon.

Are you able to perform the requested task?

Xenophon Philosopher (talk) 10:33, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

@Xenophon Philosopher: I don't think that's possible with the provided information, because it's not clear exactly where on the diagram the stations should be added due to the junctions and other features shown on the relevant line segments. Jc86035 (talk) 13:36, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for such a quick reply. It does explain why the said suggestion has not been acted upon.

Country flags in Template:COVID-19 testing

Hi Jc86035! I have reverted your edit to Template:COVID-19 testing. Your change would make it harder for novice editors to add new countries because they would need to find the names of the SVG files containing country flags (the names are not uniform). And the code looked bulky. I will change {{flagicon}}s to {{flagdeco}}s instead to reduce template size. — UnladenSwallow (talk) 13:08, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

@UnladenSwallow: Both templates are quite inefficient because they use multiple nested layers of transclusion. I think using {{flagdeco}} is fine for now, especially since there are country subdivision flags involved, but there is still about 100KB of post-expansion template size left to remove before the main article stops exceeding the template size limit. Jc86035 (talk) 14:00, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
I did not know there was such a limit. If only the country and regional flags were named uniformly (Flag of ENWIKI_ARTICLE_NAME.svg), we would be able to do direct linking without any usability issues. — UnladenSwallow (talk) 14:15, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Template : Caledonian Railway (Carstairs to Greenhill Junction) RDT

I write to ask a favour of you. On the template, Holytown (1st station) that is closed and has a closed station icon should appear on left running line ABOVE the junction line and Holytown open station should appear on the right running line.

Xenophon Philosopher (talk) 07:14, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

@Xenophon Philosopher: I've tried to add it, but I'm not sure if it's in the right place or if it was already on the map before. Is it the same as the Mossend station that's described in Wishaw and Coltness Railway? Jc86035 (talk) 07:34, 31 March 2020 (UTC)

No, that particular avenue has been a source of research and discussion with a number of organisations and it definitely is not the Mossend station on the Wishaw and Coltness Railway to which you refer to above.

Thank you for your very prompt reply!!!!

Go Transit

There is currently a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Canadian stations)#Go station naming regarding station naming conventions for Go Transit. Cards84664 00:53, 3 April 2020 (UTC)

This page uses TemplateStyles wrapper trick:

<templatestyles src="COVID-19 testing by country/styles.css" wrapper=.COVID-19_testing_by_country />
<div class="COVID-19_testing_by_country">

That's why you don't need to specify classes in the CSS. — UnladenSwallow (talk) 12:05, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

@UnladenSwallow: Thanks for the note, I didn't realize that the wrapper parameter existed. Jc86035 (talk) 12:06, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

Review C-Span Template and swap string values for numeric

Hi I saw you were the one to add Wikidata support to the C-Span template. If you didn't see, to fix the root of broken links and linking reliability for the template I proposed moving to the numeric ID for P2160 aka the C-Span Person ID which the C-Span Organization ID already uses. Could you review the C-Span Template and add a warning when a non numeric value is present. While this move is backwards compatible the strings are not reliable and break when C-Span changes them. Once QuickStatements Batch 78450 is complete all strings to numeric matches will be complete if added to Wikidata prior to the 26 Feb 2022 which means any page using the C-Span template could be updated to use the numeric ID from a query. The remaining strings in Wikidata before that time could not be matched to a C-Span numeric ID and are broken links. If in addition to reviewing the template and warning of string use you would like to tackle the template uses to swap from string to numeric, please have at it! @Wolfgang8741: Would a tracking category be preferable to a warning, though, if the goal is to be able to find such instances without visually checking every page on which the template is used? I assume it would be something like this, though perhaps you had something different in mind.
{{#if:{{#invoke:String|match|s={{{1}}}|pattern=[^0-9]|plain=false|ignore_errors=true}}|[[Category:Pages using non-numeric C-SPAN identifiers]]}}

@Jc86035 I submitted a proposal on the template talk page, so it would be better to discuss this there if others have insight. I suggested a combination of deprecation to get a tracking category to aid in cleanup while the warning being in place to warn anyone using the wrong format which increases usability in the moment of editing to help with ongoing preventative incorrect format entries and usability. Module:Adjacent stations code question

Hey, I'm working on Module:Adjacent stations and I've ran into a piece of code you've wrote which I don't fully understand. In the conditional at Module:Adjacent stations#L-425 (and 432), you check if the inline type isn't "box". Why does it only check that type? Gonnym (talk) 12:29, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

The reason that the conditional is skipped for box is because that section of code is used for getting the wikilink and link text of the line/service. The box style in {{Rail color box}} is the only style in which there is no link to the article of the line/service, so the name of the line/service is unnecessary for producing the output. Some of the styles in the template, such as this one, were included purely for backward compatibility with the templates that {{Rail color box}} was meant to supersede. The conditional is technically unnecessary (assuming that the relevant data subpage isn't missing the wikilink and link text of the line/service), since obtaining the wikilink and link text and leaving it unused would not materially affect the output or performance of the template (outside of extreme edge cases that are unlikely but possible, such as the box style being used a very large number of times on a single page). I hope this answers your question. Jc86035 (talk) 13:49, 11 July 2022 (UTC)
Yeah, helped a lot. Thank you! Gonnym (talk) 13:57, 11 July 2022 (UTC)

Editing an infobox

Dear Jc86035 I am coming back to you concerning a discussion we had in 2018, see here. This was about editing the [Show] button in pharaoh infoboxes. After the discussion it was decided that the [Show] button could be replaced by [Click to show] button. You gave some technical advise on how to do this by editing the code but in spite of your explanations, I couldn't make it work and left it there at the time. Now the problem I raised then is still there and troublesome. This button needs editing. Could you please help me by precisely telling me how to edit the code in question ?Iry-Hor (talk) 16:51, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
