New Page Review needs your help

[edit]

Hi Mr. Guye,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.

[edit]

Hi Mr. Guye -- I have declined this speedy request because, as far as I can tell, it appears to be a software product and not a company or web content, and thus ineligible for A7. Regards, Espresso Addict (talk) 05:40, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Pines article

[edit]

Hello Mr Guye,

Thank you for approving the Paul Pines article. Since you gave it a "start" rating could you suggest how to improve the article? Had already decided that I need to study the Manual of Style more for form but would also appreciate your input since, as a relative newbie, I worked at getting good sources and setting up the article to demonstrate contributions the subject made. Then thought I would focus on cleanup. Was surprised at the Start classification when I checked out the example of what a Start article looks like. Thought it was more a C or even a B rating. Looking forward to your insight. (Ogmany (talk) 16:14, 16 November 2016 (UTC))[reply]

@Ogmany: I changed my mind. I changed the ratings from "Start" to "C". --Mr. Guye (talk) 18:35, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Attack pages

[edit]

Hi Mr. Guye -- pages like "Ella concannon" that are about a child who is not in the public eye, where there is any personal information at all, should be speedied as G10 (attack pages), which will get admin attention much more quickly. Knight's Cross winners

[edit]

Hi, I followed here from Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Egon Aghta.

FYI, similar articles on non notable Knight's Cross recipients can be redirected to an alphabetical list without the need for AfD, per consensus at Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(people)#Redirect_proposal_for_Knight.27s_Cross_winners.

I've recently set up a page to track such redirects (Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Knight Cross recipients) -- you are welcome to participate. K.e.coffman (talk) 21:31, 19 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

[edit]

Hello, Mr. Guye. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request on 22:37:18, 13 March 2017 for assistance on AfC submission by RREDesigns

[edit]

Entry review. Hello.

I resubmitted an article earlier today and it was rejected with excuses obviously untrue. It was Flowblade's page, and it has descriptions about a piece of software. According to you, it doesn't comply with Wikipedia's verifiability policy, which makes absolutely no sense, since this software package is open source and hosted in a public VCN. Nothing will ever be more "verifiable" than that.

About notability. Flowblade is known in the FOSS community. Probably you don't know about it, but it doesn't mean is not noted anywhere else. That's the reason so many references has been provided. This is a misjusgment on your part.

About this: "materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed". That makes no sense either. Flowblade has only one main developer, and only the first couple of references belong to him or collaborators of the project (that is, the official webpage and the official documentation, and I can't see how that is wrong). Everything else was elaborated by third parties. I suggest you check them again.

About: "read more like an advertisement". Elaborate more on that, since I can't understand what you mean with that phrase. And if possible, provide at least two examples where this kind of reading happens.

Thanks.

Just a note about AFC

[edit]

It has long been the consensus that MOS/style issues, such as having too many elinks, are not valid reasons for declining a page. If you see a page that is clearly notable, but has some minor flaws, just fix them! For example, we're now having to explain on IRC to a very confused editor why Draft:Malcolm L. Lazin was declined, when you said it was acceptable. For an experienced editor like your or me, cleaning up the page may take five minutes, but for a newbie, this could take a very long time (if they even understand what the issues are). Thanks! Help me!

[edit]

Please help me with...There used to be a thing at the bottom of the edit box near "Watch this page" and "Save changes" where you could easily insert wiki markup, like <ref>, <span>, #REDIRECT [[]], → , <noinclude>, and more. It's not there anymore. It was very useful for me, so could you help?

Mr. Guye (talk) 17:05, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it's still there for me. Check your edit preferences? Try a different browser? If that doesn't work, feel free to re-open the helpme request. Primefac (talk) 17:08, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I meant, I wanted technical help. I'm not sure what tool/gadget/script it is. I wanted an admin to go in and fix the issue. --Mr. Guye (talk) 17:10, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Admins can't edit user's preferences. Did you check that you have the edit toolbars enabled in your "Editing" preferences? Primefac (talk) 17:13, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've unchecked it, saved, went back into preferences, checked it, opened up an edit box, no difference. -Mr. Guye (talk) 17:19, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have it unchecked, and I see no difference. Nothing came back or went away. --Mr. Guye (talk) 17:21, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A suggestion pinged to my by another user says that you might have changed the dropdown box from "Wiki Markup" to something else. Is there still a list of stuff in between the edit box and the edit summary, or is it gone entirely? Primefac (talk) 17:32, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. Yep, it was AutoEd. May need to report this. --Mr. Guye (talk) 20:31, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Disruptive editing

[edit]

This edit completely borked the histamine article. I'm not sure if this was an automated edit or not; if it was, you need to look at your automated revisions before you commit them. You're responsible for the changes that are made by the automated editing programs you use.

I'm hoping that you didn't manually perform that edit because it was a very disruptive edit. You capitalized every instance of the word "as", every instance of the word "in", and every "s" following a wikilink, among other nonsensical changes. Seppi333 (Insert ) 19:27, 3 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Seppi333:. Wow. Yeah, I was using wikEd. There is one feature where you press a button and it (is SUPPOSED to) "Fix caps in headers and lists". Obviously it went overboard. I previewed it, didn't see blatant errors, and saved. Didn't realize it did all that extra stuff.--Mr. Guye (talk) 03:12, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback granted

[edit]

Hi Mr. Guye. After reviewing your request for "rollbacker", I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when going to use rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Beeblebrox (talk) 18:18, 6 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.

Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

Hi Mr. Guye you recntly declined: Draft:Laura Crispini (Submission declined on 16 March 2017 by Mr. Guye (talk)). For editing the draft we took a look to other profiles presents in the Wikipedia:Meetup/SCAR 2016, see "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinzia_Verde". Could you please help us in improving the profile,e,g. showing the differences that characterise the above approved profile in the "SCAR wikibomb" and Laura Crispini draft? Thank you very much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geopenguin (talkcontribs) 21:17, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Geopenguin: Thank you for alerting me to that article, which is of questionable notability. I have now nominated it for deletion.

The problem with Draft:Laura Crispini is that you cited her own works or works she collaborated on as sources. Sources must be independent. Affiliated content doesn't count towards verification or notability. Crispini's essays are not independent of Crispini. That is why I declined it.--Mr. Guye (talk) 00:16, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Geopenguin (talk) 13:38, 17 March 2017 (UTC) Geopenguin} Hi Mr. Guye I think the Meetup /SCAR Wikybomb initiative was special itself see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/SCAR_2016. As I said, we looked at different accepted profiles (not only the one of Verde...)as they were made for this special event in the international scientific (but not only) world . The women in the page are important for their work in Antarctica and they were chosen as representative by a scientific international commission.[reply]

Mid-Atlantic American English

[edit]

Hello. I can see you made a contribution regarding the source "Philly Boy Roy". I don't see the contribution to be inappropriate by any means. I only wish to give some advice. If you have an issue with the source used, you can bring up to the user who enlisted it: Ryanmsfinley. That should resolve the issue relatively quickly. That's all.LakeKayak (talk) 20:38, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

1/(1-x)2

[edit]

Salutations, both: LakeKayak and Mr. Guye. While it may have been useful to discuss the issue prior to the edit, there's really no issue to resolve from my perspective; do what you like. I'd just like to understand what appears to be your shared view that linking to "Philly Boy Roy" was inappropriate. As I explained in my edit description: (Although he is a comic character, Philly Boy Roy's exaggerated version of the accent does an excellent job of highlighting its distinct features.) I'm interested to learn the sense in which Philly Boy Roy's accent is not available in or on the linked page, notwithstanding the many immediately-visible available posts. Surely we can agree that the phrase "not in the citation given" is literally inaccurate, and I did not see anything on the verification template page that redefines the phrase for this purpose. What am I missing?

On the issue of reliability, yes, it is a silly comedic character and not an academic journal article. But the topic is a spoken accent, and exaggeration is an established technique for illustrating and learning accents. Not all topics can be best addressed in an illustrious publication, and surely it cannot be that the comedic nature of the character is itself an automatic disqualifier. What, then, is the fatal reliability flaw? If it's that the Mid-Atlantic/Philly accent may not actually sound anything like Philly Boy Roy, what shields the reference to Senator Mikulski from this same objection? In both cases, it is the editor's assessment that the speaker is a good example, but neither offers any external authority to guarantee the reader that this is the case. And would a cite to a Washington Post article about him have given greater comfort?

Thanks very much, Ryanmsfinley (talk) 03:54, 10 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And please, do not be upset at some of the comments at the poll. I've asked people at the poll talk page to be a bit less bitey. The point of the poll is to let users know if they are ready, and if not, how they can become ready. Those who take the poll, and are not ready to run for adminship, are already given the bad news with a low score and guidance on how to improve. That can be hard enough to hear. The last thing they need is harsh, bitey remarks. I am sorry. Please do not take it to heart. Best wishes, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 06:40, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Kostas20142:
My ideal administrator: a strong, largely unbiased ability to assess consensus; always assuming innocence until proven guilty (especially with new editors); an intermediate to advanced level of competence with wiki markup, Java/JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and other common computer science languages; a very high level of civility; an uncommon proficiency in negotiation; and keen levels of discernment and discretion.
Supplement to my ideal administrator: A highly advanced knowledge of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; and a strong moral core. --Mr. Guye (talk) 16:52, 3 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
