Hi. As other editors have noted before (above), Wikipedia is not a travel guide. Nor is it a collection of promotional links. Please don't add links to hotels, B&Bs and the like - as it represents SPAM. Persistent spamming may result in a block. Guliolopez (talk) 16:08, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi. If you persist in adding links to this site (or any other site created by western-webs.com which you add purely for promotional reasons) then I will be moving for galway-ireland.ie (and any other western-webs.com websites) to be added to a spam blacklist. And will be requesting that you be blocked for abuse of editing privileges. Guliolopez (talk) 16:19, 10 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Poshpaddy, please do not add promotional links and please do not add statements like "has hosted many prestigious events" without being able to back them up through references. Please understand that I had to revert these edits in this article. Cheers, AFBorchert (talk) 19:03, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Poshpaddy. It has been over six months since you last edited your WP:AFC draft article submission, entitled "iDonate".

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you want to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by one of two methods (don't do both): 1) follow the instructions at WP:REFUND/G13, or 2) copy this code: {{subst:Refund/G13|Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/iDonate}}, paste it in the edit box at this link, and click "Save page". An administrator will in most cases undelete the submission.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. JMHamo (talk) 16:14, 27 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Poshpaddy. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you have an external relationship with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Alan Coyne, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies. Note that Wikipedia's terms of use require disclosure of your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. Winner 42 Talk to me! 16:51, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent promotion

[edit]

Hi. While I noted recently an implication that perhaps there was a question of "learning the ropes", I wanted to reinforce that it has been 6 years (almost to the day) since I first raised concerns about using Wikipedia to promote websites or projects by Western Webs. Previously it was a case of adding links to loosely associated articles (which intended to promote websites created by Western Webs - ie WP:LINKSPAM).

More recently I see that other editors have raised concerns about the creation of articles with which you might have a close association, or which might otherwise be somewhat "promotional" in nature - ie (WP:PROMO or SELF-PROMOTION)

While mature project contributors will strive to assume the best of intentions, one would frankly wonder whether - after six years - there is a fundamental disconnect in understanding (willful or otherwise) about what the Wikipedia project is about.

To be clear: Unless we are to consider what other options might be available, I would strongly recommend avoiding creating articles on subjects with which you have a close association and recommend considering whether your project contributions have the best intentions for Wikipedia in mind - or some other intention. (Because, to my eyes, the lee-way of AgF is all but gone here - and it seems pretty clear that there is an intent to use the project for promotional reasons - in a manner which is not appropriate.) Guliolopez (talk) 10:24, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You might also want to read Wikipedia:Vanispamcruftisement for why editors will feel strongly about this type of thing. Guliolopez (talk) 10:37, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gulio, I have been registered with Wikipedia for a number of years, but have largely been inactive. I have not added a page until recently. I am familiar with Western Webs and have a keen interest in fundraising. I will refrain from updating anything involving Western Webs. I notice lots of areas in my community that could be improved on Wipipedia. This is my motivation. I apologise for wasting your time. Thank you for your suggestions.

Kind regards, Poshpaddy (talk) 11:12, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Poshpaddy. RE "I am familiar with Western Webs". In honesty I think this is an understated declaration of interest. Pretty much every change would seem (in some way) to be related to sites or interests of Western Webs. Whether they are relatively small things (like adding promo links to an article on a local politician or restaurant listings for Westport), or relatively larger things (like creating entire pages on local interest subjects) invariably there's a "Built by Western Webs" style footer in the websites linked from the subject. To the extent that it's fairly clear that the core intent was promotional in nature. You are of course more than welcome to edit the project in a neutral and productive way (whether in the areas of fundraising or charity or whatever interests you). But, however "well meaning" it may be, you need to stop editing in the service of other interests - so I am happy to hear you say you will respect those core project tenets. Thanks. Guliolopez (talk) 12:31, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gulio, I totally understand that I have over-stepped the mark in the past. I promise to be more neutral in my comments. I feel I have lot to offer with local content. I will review what I have already done and attempt to rectify.

Thank you for your patience.

Kind regards, Poshpaddy (talk) 13:51, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Action Tuam for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Action Tuam is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Action Tuam until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Guliolopez (talk) 19:00, 11 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Continued discussion on one of the points raised in Afd

[edit]

On the Action Tuam AfD you had indicated that "If key tenets of the project are not being followed a more welcoming approach might be to suggest the correct procedure". Again, apologies if some of the previous notes (elsewhere and on your talk page above) weren't as clear as they might have been. I had thought that I'd linked some of the best practice guidelines (and firmer rules) as they relate to these areas - but perhaps I could have been clearer.

While you are of course more than welcome to contribute content on the charity sector (which I note you have been doing and is obviously an area of interest to you), what you do need to be mindful of are the WP:PROMO and WP:COI guidelines. Absolutely the project will benefit from any expertise you have in the area. So, please do work away on creating or extending articles on the charity sector.

However, please do think about whether any new articles meet the notability guidelines. Or indeed whether it's appropriate to highlight any "close associations" that other editors might need to be aware of.

(Finally, while I've said this before, I want to stress that the community will take a very dim view of using Wikipedia to promote or link traffic to sites with which you have an interest. I think it has been pretty clear that the practice of adding links to existing articles for Restaurants.ie, galway-ireland.ie, seancanney.com and similar sites (all of which I would note were developed by Western Webs) is not appropriate under WP:LINKSPAM guidelines. I would also caution against a practice in which, once Western Webs completes a project for a customer, an associated "parallel" article is created in Wikipedia - where the link to the "new" website created by Western Webs seems to have some prominence (as has been the case for Action Tuam, Tuam Golf Club, and others). This falls under WP:ARTICLESPAM and is not normally something the community looks favorably upon.)

In general, if you're looking for any details on the "correct procedure", there are great resources available under the WP:FIVEPILLARS guidelines and HELP:GUIDE on core policies. Otherwise, if you have questions, you can drop a note on my talkpage. (Or indeed on the New contributors' help page).

All the best. Guliolopez (talk) 15:31, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Julio, thank you for coming back to me.

I would like to think we could move on and maybe we both learned something from the discussion.

Just a few points :

- the links I added in the past to restaurants.ie and galway-ireland.ie are in the past. I learned some time back that this was not the right thing to do.

- Western Webs manage over 500 websites in the West of Ireland. From time to time there were projects that I felt were worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia. Action Tuam and Tuam Golf Club were two of those. I still feel strongly that both are noteworthy. Both are non-profits with no monetary gain for anyone, other that to document something on interest in the community that others may be interested in. That was my motivation.

- I have been a Wiki editor for some time (basic updates), but I have very limited experience in adding new pages. I have learned a lot from the recent articles about criteria for inclusion.

- Citations / references can be difficult as the credible press in Ireland are mostly subscription based. Plus, pre 2005 there were not many Irish websites cataloging news items.

- I thought a Stub was a skeleton page where others could add more detail and improve the page. I am still a bit vague on this.

- If you ever come to Ireland, I will buy you a Guinness.

Kind regards Poshpaddy (talk) 17:57, 15 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Official Action Tuam Logo.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Official Action Tuam Logo.jpg, which you've attributed to Action Tuam. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Diannaa (talk) 01:37, 16 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You do know that you don't need permission to create your own userpage? Per WP:UPYES, you can just create this yourself. By adding the AfC template you were actually triggering a request for a Wikipedia "article" that covered you and your experience. In short, pages in the article namespace need to follow guidelines and be notable and whatnot. Pages that you create in your own user namespace can largely be as you wish for yourself. (Perhaps adding the AfC was an error? But you can add that content to User:Poshpaddy whenever you want yourself)? Guliolopez (talk) 14:43, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hi Gulio, when does the discussion on Action Tuam AfD conclude.? It is clear that those commenting see it as notable. It takes away from the article having a question mark hang over it. As a Cork man you are probably familiar with the Mallow sugar factory. The impact of the closure of the sugar factory in Tuam was huge and Action Tuam was by far the best thing that came out of it. See the relevant docs at WP:CLOSEAFD. An admin will review and close the discussion in due course. orphaned file, no foreseeable use

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited IDonate (Ireland), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page E-sign (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
