FYI: formatting of disambiguation pages

Re your recent edits to Tornado (disambiguation). In general, links on disambiguation pages should not be piped to hide any part of the article title. The MOS says:

Unlike a regular article page, don't wikilink any other words in the line, unless they may be essential to help the reader determine where they might find the information. For example: "Dark Star", a song by the Grateful Dead not: "Dark Star", a song by the psychedelic rock band The Grateful Dead

So why do you insist on having links for Garbage (band), Six Flags, Coney Island, etc, but not allow one for Adventureland (Iowa)? The MOS specifically lists an example with a band saying not to link the band name. Please be consistent!--Rehcsif 15:23, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I thought it was obvious, but I'll try to spell it out. The general idea is that there should only by one bluelink (active link) on each line of a disambig page. This is because you don't want to direct the reader to more than one location. The roller coaster at Adventureland already has a link, and the Adventureland link is a duplicate, which the reader can find by going to the roller coaster article, should they be interested. Having both links does not conform to the MOS.

However, the other 3 articles all have redlinks. I.E., they do not yet have articles associated with them. Therefore, the MOS gives you two options: (1) remove the item because it is non-notable and will probably never have a Wikipedia article; or (2) add a secondary link that relates to the item and gives the reader some information, or a lead on where to find more information; this option is to be chosen when you think the redlink might eventually become an article. If an article is written, the red link turns blue, and the secondary link would be removed, in the same way as I removed Adventureland. I chose to do this for those other 3 items rather than removing them.

It isn't my site, and I didn't originally add it. It's a "Unofficial Valleyfair site". Lots of other parks have links to "Unofficial" sites on their pages. As far as I can tell, the only reason you're removing it is that it happens to have adsense adds, non-prominantly displayed at the bottom of the page. Since the page has a lot of content about Valleyfair! I feel it belongs on the page. But, I guess we'll have to see what others think on the Talk page. --Rehcsif 14:20, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Note that I did not say you were a spammer, nor did I say you put the link there at first - just that you followed the pattern of spammers with your instant revert. And, sure, there's a lot of heat. In many of these cases the heat comes from someone's pocketbook being touched. Others are cases where someone has an overly high view of or great emotional involvement with his own page. In the cases of worthy pages that might be exceptions, be advised that we are working on a process where they can be reviewed by an impartial admin. You are welcome to initiate that if you wish. Contact an uninvolved admin and ask for a review. Then they can put the link back. It would be best to put an invisible note to that effect, of course.Pollinator 17:27, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

But you are, by definition, assuming bad faith. You saw my revert, even though my edit comment said that I felt the page had merits and the advertising was minimal (and have repeatedly stated I have absolutely no connection to the page), yet you immediately re-reverted it, assumed I must be "one of those bad spammers", etc, e.g. "assumed bad faith". To you, it seems, anyone who adds, or supports the adding of, an external link, is immediately held with great suspicion -- directly violating WP:AGF. As for 'not calling me a spammer', you added a blurb on my user talk page, which essentially labels me a link-spammer, and as I understand it, I have no way to challenge it and am not allowed to remove it. --Rehcsif 17:38, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just suggested a simple way to challenge it. As far as any "stain" on your talk page, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. Everything ever posted on my talk page (except blatant vandalism) is still there. Openness is one of the characteristics of Wikipedia. On the other had it's YOUR talk page. It's very bad form to remove an administrator's warning or an ongoing dispute; however, once this is worked out, I have no problem with you removing the section, and, as far as I know there is no rule against that. I'm sorry that this has been an unpleasant experience for you. I don't expect that it will be your last such experience but I hope that you will learn to take this sort of stuff in stride as being an unfortunate but permanent aspect of Wikipedia culture. The key, IMO, is not so much to attempt to eliminate the behavior but rather to cope with it.

RE: Spam

I've tried to add an external link to the Disneyland entry that is just as valuable as the other external links if not moreso. I don't agree with the "spam" label. The site is a thoroughly researched, organized, and helpful collection of tips for Disneyland visitors of any age. Why is this not allowed?

Generally, it's considered bad form to add a link that is promoting a website that you're directly affiliated with. If you do feel this is an important site for the article, please bring it up on Talk:Disneyland Park (Anaheim) and a consensus can be reached whether or not the site should be included. The very hungry caterpilar

Hello! I am making The Very Hungry Caterpillar a pet-project and a trying to get the standard up. I have reworded and partly expanded the head section/intro and edited the discussion page for clarity, but generally avoided deleting the mix of comments, and replied to a few of the comments including yours on the page; not that I felt tempted to delete yours since it was altogether proper! I agreed with you about 'holes' being an important (design) feature, and it was already mentioned in the 'development' section that a hole-puncher inspired a process that became this book. I wanted to let you know and encourage you to look in and and add any thoughts/bold new edits. I am quite inexperienced so if I am out of place or overbearing, let me know! Cheers! Bless their hearts, they're just starting out, so we thought, why not put something together? Because, you know, it's not like it's rocket science or anything, but hey, we're always happy to lend a hand where we can. And just a little bit of Minnesota Nice to help along the way. 'Uff da!' you say? Well editing the Wikipedia is not hard at all!

Join us at one of our three FREE workshops in Minnesota, where you can learn how to edit Wikipedia and add Minnesota's local history in a relaxed and supportive setting. Work alongside others and discover how easy editing Wikipedia can be. The workshops aim to enhance the ability of communities in Greater and rural Minnesota to edit Wikipedia and comprehend it's editing culture and guidelines, as well as to expand Wikipedia's coverage of Minnesota's history.

Okay its been a while since the Wikipedia Minnesota User Group has meet. Since the last time we meet there has been social upheaval, plague, etc... - no small thing to be sure. There has been some sad lonely discussions on the Minnesota Meetup page on getting together but little action. So here it is. Come and be seen. Talk about the future of the Minnesota User Group and see what nefarious plans we can hatch.
