IT Defination Change[edit]

IT definition change.

According to BICSI, the official definition of IT - Information Technology, has been upgraded to ICT Information and Communication Technology. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.212.76.73 (talk) 02:05, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you think there is information which can be usefully added to an article, please edit the article (preferably with a reference to a reliable source for the information you are adding). Alternatively, if you are not confident in doing this, or think it might be controversial, please make a suggestion on the article's talk page. If a prominent body in the field has recommended a name change, that fact probably ought to be recorded in relevant articles; but articles should not be moved (renamed) until the new name becomes more common in general sources. --ColinFine (talk) 08:29, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unable to get correct reference coding for additions to list.[edit]

List of defunct automobile manufacturers of the United States

I added two new vehicles to the above list (Comuta-Car and Tropica) both Electric vehicles. However, I cannot figure out the correct reference connections!? The Comuta-Car is explained on your Wikipedia CitiCar page. The Tropica is explained on the (now defunct)Renaissance Cars Inc. at: http://nogas.org/ev/ and at: http://rci.rutgers.edu/~crisitel/EV/C-Cars%20and%20the%20Tropica.pdf

Thank you for your time. I hope you can help correct this!?

Cite error: The named reference https:.2F.2Fen.wikipedia.org.2Fwiki.2FCiticar was invoked but never defined (see the help page).

Peter C. — Preceding unsigned comment added by T442163 (talkcontribs) 03:26, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the error message, you'll see that the words "help page" are in blue, meaning that they are a wikilink, in this case to Help:Cite errors/Cite error references no text, so that's a page you need to read. It sounds, however, as if you are trying to use a Wikipedia article as a reference; this isn't allowed, for the reasons described at WP:CIRCULAR. You can, however, provide a wikilink to the relevant article. --David Biddulph (talk) 04:52, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That error message indicates that you are trying to use the URL as the name of the reference (inside the <ref>). You don't need to name your reference (it's useful if you're going to use the same reference more than once in the page), but if you do, the name needs to be a single word, or else contained in quotes. Please see the link Dude1250 gave you. --ColinFine (talk) 08:37, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I go for help with making images?[edit]

I'm currently working on a major project in my User:MezzoMezzo/sandbox, and the main image for the future article's infobox is a good effort but a bit amateurish. Is there a specific board where I can ask editors experienced with making images how I can get a more professional looking image for the same thing? MezzoMezzo (talk) 06:33, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My daughter Lydia Warnock is the current 2013 Senior All Ireland Fiddle Champion, County Leitrim. She is also 2011 Slow Airs Fiddle Senior. Verify Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann website.[edit]

Sorry maybe I have done this wrong????

My daughter's name is Lydia Warnock from County Leitrim Ireland. She is the current 2013 Senior All Ireland Fiddle Champion. I was trying to enter her name on the list to no avail.

She is also the 2011 Slow Airs Senior All Ireland Champion and again I couldn't put her name on the list.

This can be verified throught the Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Website.

Maybe ye will be able to do this for me.

Kind regards, Carol

This is your only edit at Wikipedia. Which list are you referring to?--Shantavira|feed me 08:48, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Carol. As a rule, lists of people in Wikipedia are not comprehensive, but only contain people who have, or could have, articles about them in Wikipedia. The criterion for that is that they are notable in Wikipedia's special sense: they have been written about at length in independent reliable sources. As a winner of a competition, it is possible that your daughter meets this criterion; but an article would still need newspaper articles or similar about her; and it should not be you that writes an article on her, because you have a conflict of interest. What I suggest is that you check whether she currently meets the criteria at WP:MUSBIO, and if so, request that somebody write an article about her; then she can be added to the list. If she does not at the moment meet those criteria, then I'm afraid she should not be added to the list. --ColinFine (talk) 09:40, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A general list of musicians like List of fiddlers is usually only for people with articles, but a list of winners of a specific award or contest is usually meant to be exhaustive. Is this about List of All-Ireland Fleadh champions? PrimeHunter (talk) 09:55, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You are probably right, an edit with that name included was [reverted for being unsourced. I don't think there is a COI issue here, the edit was simply adding more recent names (not just Warnock's) taken from a source and did other useful things like correcting accents. I would advise making the edit again, but this time include the source of the information in the edit. The page should really have the source identified against each entry in the list, but it does not, they are all bunched together at the top. This makes it unclear to new editors that they are supposed to include sources.
It is a common mishaprehension amongst editors that all lists are based on notability. They are not, as WP:CSC makes clear, a valid selection criteria is that all items on the list are not notable. SpinningSpark 10:59, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.--ukexpat (talk) 13:51, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, my wife and I have been trying to post articles for wiki's review. Subject titled "Bill Haney". We have put probably 50hrs into trying to get this very worthy man listed. We keep getting deleted even through we are carefully following the many many many rules. We have submitted newspaper articles and a bio and it just keeps getting swallowed up - deleted with messages saying different reasons. The latest being "deleted: out of scope. Can someone please work with us? Thank you in advance to any one who tries to help us.

GreenLips (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 15:10, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The draft appears to be at User:GreenLips. I will move it to a sandbox which is more appropriate.--ukexpat (talk) 15:45, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The draft is now at User:GreenLips/Sandbox. In order for it to survive as an article, you need to cite the sources you are relying upon. See WP:REFB for further assistance. I also did some courtesy clean up of the formatting.--ukexpat (talk) 15:51, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The original draft was at User:GreenLips/sandbox (note the lower case "s") and was deleted (see log) by user:TParis under speedy deletion criterion A7. This seems a very dubious speedy deletion to me as A7 only applies to articles and drafts are not articles. G13 would apply, but only after the draft has sat there for six months without any progress. Perhaps TParis would care to comment? SpinningSpark 18:56, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Unsourced BLPs can be deleted after 7 days. You're a sysop, check the deleted revisions for sources.--v/r - TP 19:05, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That would be a BLP deletion then, not an A7, and its ten days not seven, and the usual courtesy is to place a warning template at the beginning of the ten days. My sincere apologies for failing to correctly read your mind. SpinningSpark 19:47, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
My reading of WP:BLPPROD is that it does not apply to draft articles in any event.--ukexpat (talk) 20:07, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The BLP policy applies to "material about living persons in other articles and on other pages, including talk pages". Nothing is exempt from BLP anywhere on the site. SpinningSpark 20:12, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In which case WP:BLPPROD needs to be amended to explicitly say that it applies to articles and drafts.--ukexpat (talk) 20:49, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the user should've been given notice. If I recall correctly, someone came on IRC to complain about the BLP and so seeing it was somewhat questionable, I deleted it instead of giving notice. @Ukexpat: WP:BLPPROD actually doesn't even say 'articles'. It references articles several times in terms of other deletion criteria, but when it's talking about itself it specifically says "biographies". That is in line with the WP:BLP policy. Any biography of any living person in any namespace. Check it out.--v/r - TP 21:32, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@TParis:, please take a moment to read WP:BLPPROD one more time, and then come back and see if you still believe it doesn't say it applies to "articles"? I stopped counting at 15... --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:05, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
WP:BLPPROD Quotes:
  • "Unsourced biographies of living people (BLP) created after March 18, 2010, can be proposed for deletion using a special proposed deletion process."
  • "If the biography remains unsourced after seven days, the biography may be deleted."
  • Scope: "Although our policy on biographies of living persons covers all types of biographical material, the use of this deletion procedure is intended to apply only to actual biographies of living people."
  • Background: "All improperly sourced articles about living people may be subject to deletion per the standard deletion processes, but in addition, biographies created after March 18, 2010, that do not contain at least one source directly supporting the material may also be proposed for deletion under this new process." I believe this line specifically demonstrates how BLPPROD distinguishes between articles and biographies.
  • "If you see a biography about a living person without references, you are strongly encouraged to either source or remove any contentious material and look for reliable sources that support the remainder of the biography's content."
  • "This method of proposed deletion is an additional tool to be used in the interests of increasing the quality of BLP sourcing on Wikipedia."
  • "{{prod blp}} tagged biographies remain eligible for speedy deletion nomination in the usual way."
  • Most importantly: "Per this section of the BLP policy, badly written BLPs should be stubbified or deleted. Administrators may have to delete pages if the page's primary content is unsourced" Pages, not articles.
WP:BLP quotes:
  • "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced and not related to making content choices should be removed, deleted, or oversighted, as appropriate."
  • "BLP applies to all material about living persons anywhere on Wikipedia, including talk pages, edit summaries, user pages, images, categories, persondata, article titles and drafts."
  • "All BLPs created after March 18, 2010 must have at least one source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article, or it may be proposed for deletion."
Yes, I believe BLPPROD applies to biographies, not articles.--v/r - TP 22:24, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Now you're just selectively quoting, leaving out all the places it says it applies to articles. I'm disappointed in you; that's not a tactic I would have expected you to take. Think whatever you wish; goodbye. --Floquenbeam (talk) 22:34, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure you got the ping, but I opened a discussion here.--v/r - TP 22:53, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • WP:BLP (the policy) applies everywhere; WP:BLPPROD (the deletion process) applies only to articles (try it and see; the template {{BLPPROD}} yells at you if it isn't in article space.) --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:11, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The template itself isn't policy. The fact remains that any editor can at any time remove any uncited BLP material from anywhere on Wikipedia without warning. TParis might be being a bit of an arse over this, but it is pointless to complain about his lack of sticking to the exact procedure when the page doesn't stand any kind of chance until it is properly cited, which is the fundamental problem. SpinningSpark 21:20, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • The policy WP:BLPPROD specifies biographies of living people, it doesn't distinguish between locations. The WP:BLP policy is pretty clear that it applies everywhere. I'm not trying to be a dick, but BLPs are serious business, and I mean that seriously, not like internet slang arsery.--v/r - TP 21:32, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • This was just an FYI, as several people said things above that I don't think are strictly true. I'm not saying deletion was or was not a good idea, and hopefully no one is saying I don't think BLP is serious. But the wording of WP:BLPPROD makes it pretty clear to me it only applies to article space. If there is BLP-violating material on a user subpage, take it out same as anywhere else. But BLPPROD isn't the same as BLP, and BLPPROD doesn't seem to apply to user space. --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:47, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, @Spinningspark:, it's 7 days now, not 10 days. It changed in February. --Floquenbeam (talk) 21:52, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Really? It still says ten on the BLP policy page. Not the first time we've had policy pages contradicting each other. SpinningSpark 22:19, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Either way, I deleted it after 12 so it's not exactly pertinent. In any case, Floq, I'm not addressing your seriousness, I'm addressing Spinningspark's comment that I'm being a bit of an arse. I'm an arse because I treat marginal BLPs are serious things that can become coatracks. Right now we have a user who is highly supportive of a marginally notable subject. I read an essay somewhere, and I can't find it now, that said something to the effect of 'You might think you want an article, but you don't own it and it will attract any and all bad publicity that exists. You might be opening pandora's box'. Something like that. Essentially, just because the user creating the article has great intentions doesn't mean that future editors will have the same benevolence of the subject. People with marginal notability are better off w/o articles.--v/r - TP 22:36, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just before I go to bed, I would like to apologise to Tparis for that uncalled for comment. I don't knwo what came over me. SpinningSpark 00:01, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're not out of line, I can be an ass sometimes and it helps to be reminded of it. I haven't taken it personally.--v/r - TP 03:04, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Seems everyone has forgotten the editors wanting to resolve their issues and get their stub going. P.S. I think all of you should get in line for recall this is embarrassing. Mlpearc (open channel) 23:59, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No one has forgotten anything. That article is a mess. It's full of puffery, it's an unsourced BLP, and has zero evidence of notability. Would you like me to email you a copy of it? I have no problem with someone improving it if it can be, but from reading the article I don't think it'd pass WP:BIO.--v/r - TP 03:04, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dispute resolution[edit]

How do I refer an article for moderation? This article: Brussels has been the subject of repeated edits/undos between myself and another. This activity is ultimately pointless and unhelpful to readers. I would like the matter to be reviwed under whatever process is available.

The basis of the dispute is whether Brussels is 'the de facto capital of Europe'. I contend that this statement is politically charged as it implies that the European Union is a state rather than an organisation created by treaties between sovereign states. For comparison, the same article does not refer to Brussels as the de facto capital of NATO - another organisation created by treaty with its headquarters in Brussels. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MEPK (talkcontribs) 15:18, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Tracy Caulkins picture with Coach[edit]

I used to be on the same team as Tracy and I can say with certainty that the picture listed as Tracy with Coach in 1981 is not Tracy and that was never her coach. Anyone, even those who never knew her, can tell that this picture is not of Tracy by the fact that she is wearing a warmup with a Dutch National patch on the shoulder. Someone who represents her should replace this picture with one that is pertinent to who Tracy was.68.116.94.245 (talk) 16:08, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It's not just changed its branding, it's been acquired by Savills. With the appropriate sources the relevant articles should be edited to reflect the acquisition.--ukexpat (talk) 16:36, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
COI doesn't say that you can't edit articles that you have a COI with. It's just advised against. For something as uncontroversial as a name/logo change, I don't know why anyone would object to that. Dismas|(talk) 20:35, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Creating templates for my own use[edit]

I've never done this, so I'm unsure: it it permissible to create templates that are intended for my own personal use? For example, I was thinking of writing a template that instructs users that subsections should be written in "Sentence case" not "Title Case", am I allowed to do this? Or if I wanted to create a less wordy version of an existing user warning, am I allowed to? Obviously anybody can use them if they want to, but my intention for creating it is to make my own life a little easier. Do I need to name them anything special, like "Template:CyphoidSentence" or something? I've read WP:TFD and my proposed usage doesn't seem to violate any of the four criteria. Am I overthinking this? Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:42, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You could create them in user space - I did that with a few customised welcome templates, such as User:Ukexpat/welcome2. It makes the Wikicode to substitute them slightly longer, but would prevent anyone objecting to them if they were in Template space.--ukexpat (talk) 17:54, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The templates you suggest might be useful to other editors and hence could be placed in template space. I would be very cautious though, in creating new versions of existing warnings, whether in your own space or not. You need to be careful not to step outside of the bounds of policy, courtesy, or WP:AGF (which is policy). SpinningSpark 20:08, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If it is a boilerplate message that you would use regularly there is no issue with you creating a subpage template for it in your own userspace, it would be no different than if you typed it every time. Naturally, you would have to follow all the good things Spinningspark mentioned, as you would in regular notification. You could create one at User:Cyphoidbomb/Headings or something simlar, and then add it using {{subst:User:Cyphoidbomb/Headings}}. I know you can add custom welcomes to Twinkle, but I don't think you can add custom warnings/notifications. Ukexpat, I have seen/borrowed your custom welcome, have you added it to your Twinkle interface? --kelapstick(bainuu) 20:17, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Strike that, it looks like you can add custom warnings to your personal twinkle interface, that's nice. --kelapstick(bainuu) 20:19, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you can and yes I have!--ukexpat (talk) 20:46, 3 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well, shoot, if I can add the custom warnings through Twinkle, then that's perfect because I am one Twinkle-using mug! I'll look into that. I appreciate all the feedback, thank you. Most of the warnings available via Twinkle are based on existing UWs, which can be very general, wordy and a bit much for kids to process, and we do deal with a lot of kids in our volunteer work. I wanted to warn one kid about original research the other day, but the appropriate template rambles on about WP:SYNTHESIS which might be fine for an adult to figure out, but a kid just needs to hear "don't add your opinions". Anyhow, I'll dive a little deeper into Twinkle. Thanks y'all! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 02:09, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
