- 1258 – George Mouzalon, regent of the Empire of Nicaea, was assassinated as part of a conspiracy led by nobles under future emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos.
- 1609 – Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei (pictured) demonstrated his first telescope to Venetian lawmakers.
- 1875 – Matthew Webb became the first person to swim across the English Channel, completing the journey in approximately 21 hours 40 minutes.
- 1975 – Bruce Springsteen released his commercial breakthrough album, Born to Run.
- 2012 – NASA's robotic space probe Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause and entered interstellar space, making it the first spacecraft to do so.
