You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. Should we include Latin music festivals as part of our project?
Currently, the iHeartRadio Fiesta Latina, Austin City Limits Music Festival, Sacramento Film and Music Festival, and the SXSW are the only Latin music festivals that has a Wikipedia page. Other Latin music festivals includes the Chicago Latin Music Festival (hosted annually at the Petrillo Music Shell), The Uforia Music Festival, Seattle Latin American Music Festival, Soulfrito, The Latin Music Festival of Southern Maryland, Latin Urban Fest, DC Bachata Music Festival, City of Miramar Latin Music Festival, Spanish Peaks International Celtic Music Festival, Heart O' Texas Fair & Rodeo, Cuero Turkeyfest, The Hola Festival, New York International Salsa Dance & Music Festival, Miami Salsa Congress, Pachanga Latino Musical Festival, NYC South American Music Festival, Latin Music Festival at Santa Anita Park, Festival Latino, and the Fiesta de la Flor (I'll take care of this one), and many more; I got tired of searching on Google lolz. So should we include these festivals dedicated to Latin music and culture to our project or do they fear better at WP:LATINOS? Best, jona(talk) 15:44, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
- @AJona1992: Sorry for the late response, but if other music festivals such as country and rock are covered by their respective projects, then I don't see why the Latin music project can't cover Latin music festivals. Erick (talk) 18:11, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Articles for creation?
So guys, I've been cycling through my music library, searching for bands and musicians that could potentially have an article here, and I decided to check this project's main page to see if there's any list of articles to be created. Our to-do list indeed says we should "Identify articles for creation", but where should we list them? Maybe we could built our own list of missing articles. And each time someone adds a missing topic, they should also provide a brief description of what the topic is about, so that potentially interested editors can search for articles they'd feel like creating. I will have a list of some names soon, I intend to create them someday, but of course I would be happy if someone did it first. And maybe there are more editors with similar lists that wouldn't mind other people working on them. Victão Lopes Fala! 04:02, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- @Victor Lopes: Great idea! I was also just to begin discussion about the project's assessment page regarding the addition of quality scale and importance scale, something that the Hip hop and Albums projects have. I mean, we might list of songs that went #1 on the Hot Latin Songs in the US as well as #1 songs in Brazil and Spain. Then there's the recordings that have been inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame Award that should be created as well. Erick (talk) 06:10, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

- Just had a look at the list and it's pretty good. The only ones who wouldn't be covered by the project are those who don't perform in Spanish or Portuguese but I imagine that's only a few. - Yep, he's covered by the project too since he has been nominated a few Latin music awards by singing in Spanish. There's several Italian artists who are covered by this project such as Laura Pausini and Eros Ramazzotti because they also sing in Spanish and won several Latin music awards. An artist or band doesn't need to have a Hispanic or Latino background to be in the project scope so long as they sing in Spanish or Portuguese for the Latin audience. And it's nice to know some of the musicians play Latin music since we could also benefit from that. I just use the Latin Recording Academy's definition of Latin music for the project scope since I think it's the one that makes the most sense personally. Erick (talk) 19:08, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, there's Yanni! He's Greek-American. He has even released an entire album dedicated to Mexican music... and there are also a couple more songs by him with Latin elements. I've actually thought about him before, but as you mentioned, I don't think he's done enough Latin recordings to be covered by the project. At the very least, I've tagged his Latin albums for the time being a while ago. I've also tagged Christina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado since they've also done some Latin recordings but I'm not sure if they've done enough to merit their inclusions on the project scope yet. Currently on the project page I have it written that artists and bands are covered if they often record in Spanish or Portuguese, so maybe we could say at least 10%-50% of their total recordings as a minimum requirement? - I think that's fair enough and I added that requirement. Though there are some artists that I think are too important to not cover such as Eydie Gorme (she's recorded a good amount of Latin recordings) as well as the Italian artists that I've mentioned (even though 50% of their recordings are probably in Spanish anyway) so I also mentioned that artists and bands that frequently crossover to the Latin market by singing in Spanish or Portuguese can be added too. That way artists who have only made one Latin crossover recording don't get in. I just have one more question for you and this is something I've been asking other members of the project. Would you be okay if the project expands its scope to include Spanish/Portuguese-language versions of a song by a non Latin artist? Currently, the project only allows Spanish/Portuguese versions of a song by Latin artists because I have been afraid getting backlash by other users of Wikipedia. But so far, the other members of the project that I've don't seem to mind and one user who isn't a member of the project was very open about it (he's a Rihanna fan and wanted me to tag Hate That I Love You for its Spanglish version with the Latin music banner). In a way, I think it could be beneficial to the project because it might attract new members to project and the Spanish/Portuguese versions are usually meant to appeal to the Latin audience anyway. - I don't think we should set the bar that high, artists who record Spanish-language or "Latin music" only do so in their early musical careers or when they are asked to bump up their Latin fan base and release an EP of Spanish-language songs previously released. The only non-Latin artists who will/or have reached the 50% mark are Celine Dion (French) and Jennifer Lopez (since her upcoming album will be in Spanish and she has released a new Spanish cover single). Others such as Beyonce and Rihanna continue to release English language albums with here and theres of Spanish music; though some of their repertoire have Latin music influences. But I do agree with the inclusion of what is missing/wanted for the Latin music project and maybe have a new tab where members can pitch in articles that others might not have known about or forgotten. jona(talk) 18:03, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

- Just to say real fast, J Lo can stay as she's one of the artists that frequently crosses over to the Latin market even after her sole Spanish-language album. Same for artists who continuously cross over to the Latin market. Christina Aguilera and Nelly Furtado are being removed because they haven't done enough Spanish recordings to be covered by the project yet (unless maybe they announce another Spanish album). Per the consensus on this talk page, the Latin music project has now expanded its project scope to include Spanish- and Portuguese-language versions of singles by any artist. I say singles, since some songs with a Spanish/Portuguese version don't get released to Latin market, but that's so few that it should work out fine! Plus I still want to play it safe. - You might also want to add a source like AllMusic or Billboard to validate their career(s) and their eligibility on Wikipedia based on WP:NMG. Jamaican artists sing Jamaican, English, and Creole languages; neither are a dialect of Spanish. Best, jona(talk) 14:39, 11 May 2015 (UTC)

Just wanted to add, while Jamaican reggae artists may not be in, reggae en español and Brazilian artists who sing reggae in Portuguese is fine (after all, reggaeton was derived from reggae). Erick (talk) 16:48, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- Ah yes, one f the bands I added (Planta e Raiz) is a Brazilian reggae band. By the way, all the metal bands I added are either bands singing in Portuguese/Spanish/indigenous languages or bands that incorporate Latin musical elements in their instrumentation. Information about Cultura Profética
Hi everyone! I have not been active on Wikipedia recently and am getting back into the swing of things. Cultura Profética is one of my favorite bands and I have noticed their page is not in the best shape. I would love to get Cultura's page to GA status, and have made a few improvements today. Unfortunately, I am having a difficult time finding reliable sources about the group's history. If anyone has any ideas or would like to collaborate, that would be amazing! - Welcome back. Here are some comments that should be helpful
- You don't need to elaborate on their touring in the lead.
- "lyrics relied", I doubt they relied on those lyrics but have reflected on those issues
- You don't need to wikilink common words or phrases (English, romantic)
- Why wikilink all other music genres except reggae; which you claim that they primarily record?
- Dancehall is a subgenre of reggae music
- The lead does not summarizes the article body and lack critical information (when did they formed? how were the albums critical and commercial success? what makes them popular?)
- Nobody uses MySpace, do they have an official website?
- What are the members full names?
- There's an overlinking problem in this article
- The discography should only contain the band's studio albums and not live, tribute, or compilation albums
- There's a dab link and two deadlinks
Overall, you got a great start. You may want to work on the article with a model in mind (like Thirty Seconds to Mars for an example). Before submitting the article to GAN, you may want ask for a copy-edit request and then bring it over at WP:PR so that other editors could provide their comments. - Thanks so much for your help! I really appreciate it. I have addressed most of these issues and plan to do so even more. I'm thinking the main issue with the article is that it is not very comprehensive, and it will be more complete once I can compile more sources. My main goal is to expand the existing sections and then add a "Musical style" section and then perhaps one that addresses their political concerns if I can find enough information. Hello friends! We have been hard at work these past two months. For this report:
For the first time, we are happy to bring you an exhaustive, comprehensive WikiProject Directory. This directory endeavors to list every single WikiProject on the English Wikipedia, including those that don't participate in article assessment. In constructing the broadest possible definition, we have come up with a list of approximately 2,600 WikiProjects. The directory tracks activity statistics on the WikiProject's pages, and, for where it's available, statistics on the number of articles tracked by the WikiProject and the number of editors active on those articles. Complementing the directory are description pages for each project, listing usernames of people active on the WikiProject pages and the articles in the WikiProject's scope. This will help Wikipedians interested in a subject find each other, whether to seek feedback on an article or to revive an old project. (There is an opt-out option.) We have also come up with listings of related WikiProjects, listing the ten most relevant WikiProjects based on what articles they have in common. We would like to promote WikiProjects as interconnected systems, rather than isolated silos.
A tremendous amount of work went into preparing this directory. WikiProjects do not consistently categorize their pages, meaning we had to develop our own index to match WikiProjects with the articles in their scope. We also had to make some adjustments to how WikiProjects were categorized; indeed, I personally have racked up a few hundred edits re-categorizing WikiProjects. There remains more work to be done to make the WikiProject directory truly useful. In the meantime, take a look and feel free to leave feedback at the WikiProject X talk page.
What have we been working on?
- A new design template—This has been in the works for a while, of course. But our goal is to design something that is useful and cleanly presented on all browsers and at all screen resolutions while working within the confines of what MediaWiki has to offer. Additionally, we are working on designs for the sub-components featured on the main project page.
- A new WikiProject talk page banner in Lua—Work has begun on implementing the WikiProject banner in Lua. The goal is to create a banner template that can be usable by any WikiProject in lieu of having its own template. Work has slowed down for now to focus on higher priority items, but we are interested in your thoughts on how we could go about creating a more useful project banner. We have a draft module on Test Wikipedia, with a demonstration.
- New discussion reports—We have over 4.8 million articles on the English Wikipedia, and almost as many talk pages as well. But what happens when someone posts on a talk page? What if no one is watching that talk page? We are currently testing out a system for an automatically-updating new discussions list, like RFC for WikiProjects. We currently have five test pages up for the WikiProjects on cannabis, cognitive science, evolutionary biology, and Ghana.
- SuggestBot for WikiProjects—We have asked the maintainer of SuggestBot to make some minor adjustments to SuggestBot that will allow it to post regular reports to those WikiProjects that ask for them. Stay tuned!
- Semi-automated article assessment—Using the new revision scoring service and another system currently under development, WikiProjects will be getting a new tool to facilitate the article assessment process by providing article quality/importance predictions for articles yet to be assessed. Aside from helping WikiProjects get through their backlogs, the goal is to help WikiProjects with collecting metrics and triaging their work. Semi-automation of this process will help achieve consistent results and keep the process running smoothly, as automation does on other parts of Wikipedia.

The database report which lists WikiProjects according to the number of watchers (i.e., people that have the project on their watchlist), is back! The report stopped being updated a year ago, following the deactivation of the Toolserver, but a replacement report has been generated.

Copyright Violation Detection - EranBot Project
A new copy-paste detection bot is now in general use on English Wikipedia. Come check it out at the EranBot reporting page. This bot utilizes the Turnitin software (ithenticate), unlike User:CorenSearchBot that relies on a web search API from Yahoo. It checks individual edits rather than just new articles. Please take 15 seconds to visit the EranBot reporting page and check a few of the flagged concerns. Comments welcome regarding potential improvements. Salsa Celtica
The article Salsa Celtica is so bad it's laughable. I could revert to a version of one and a half years ago that wasn't funny -- this one, by SuperHamster (who battled valiantly against others' injections of horseshit). But this older version starts with a template warning that the article has been unsourced since 2010 (a template that remains even now). Time to take this wretched thing to AfD? I really don't know: there's a fair amount on the web about this band, but much (most?) of it looks like an echo chamber. Does what I see just parrot the band's own energetic copywriter, or is there something to it? I'm so unfamiliar with this kind of subject that I might have trouble differentiating between (A) the merely promotional and (B) editorial gush that's taken as "reliable". -- Hoary (talk) 00:16, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

This month marks the start of the Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States and couple of interesting news relating to Latin music have happened this month. First of course are the Latin Grammy nominations just announced today, so articles for several nominated artists, albums, and songs should be created or update. Second, Telemundo has announced its nominees for the first-ever Latin American Music Awards (the Spanish-language counterpart of the American Music Awards). Third, Billboard has listed the most essential Latin artists and albums of all time, so many articles could benefit from Billboard' listing. And finally, our interview with the Signpost should be posted sometime today to coincide with the Latin Grammy nominations. With all this, we should hopefully be able to not only improve and create articles, but to also incite new users into joining this project. WikiProject X Newsletter • Issue 5
Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:
In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.
Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.
Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.
There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.
The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

The rumba mess
Hello everyone. In the past few months I have been trying to improve and clarify the different music styles known as rumba, most of which have articles now. However, the article rumba remains a mess that duplicates the Cuban rumba article. Moreover, it is extremely misleading, since the other genres called "rumba" are completely unrelated to Cuban rumba. Obviously, the rumba article should simply be a disambiguation to these styles, because the term rumba by itself is ambiguous, but User:Midas02 seems to believe that the current article, which includes a mishmash of duplicated, incorrect, dubious, COI and OR content should be kept, undoing my corrections. - @Neodop: The best way to deal with the situation is to show the user different reliable sources that shows that "rumba" itself is an ambiguous meaning. You showed the user different meanings of "rumba", perhaps you could also show sources that says how "rumba" is an unclear meaning? Alternatively, the user said that it was a cut-and-paste move, so you could go to WP:RM and request a move and present your evidence with reliable sources. Erick (talk) 14:59, 5 November 2015 (UTC)

Eligible albums?
Dear fellow editors, 
In the list of missing articles, there is a section for albums, all of which have been inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame.
This made me wonder whether the list is intended to include only such inducted albums. There are other notable albums which I thought deserve an article in our encyclopedia, but I didn't want to add them to the existing list, just in case they didn't fit the implied criteria of having been inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame.
Please may I therefore propose that we consider the following two actions:
- rename the existing section from "Albums" to "Albums inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame";
- create a second section for "Other notable albums".
I would then also have proposed that we consider including, in this second list, some of the very successful albums by notable bands such as Afro-Cuban All Stars, ¡Cubanismo!, etc. It also occurred to me that some editors might prefer to work on one list or the other, depending on their interests, knowledge and available sources.
Thank you for letting me know, and I'll obviously be happy to go along with the consensual views and preferences.

- @Pdebee: No, no, we welcome any Latin albums that you feel should be created. There is no limit at all on what album could included in the list. Adding a rationale is only optional. I only included those recordings because I'm surprised no one has yet to create those articles since they are well-known in the Latin music universey. The only requirement is that the recording has to be either in Spanish, Portuguese, or any of the indigenous languages or dialects from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. Or if it's an instrumental album, it can be any genre from Ibero-America (including Spain and Portugal). That's pretty much it. Erick (talk) 15:37, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
