Day of the Dead?

Is the Spanish-language translation "El Día de los Muertos" or "Día de Muertos"? BlankVerse ∅ 09:06, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

I asked my wife about this, and she agrees Dia de muertos is correct. However, she also noted that 1 November is Día de niños and 2 November is Día de difuntos (adult dead). I'd also note that in Spanish only the first letter of a sentence and proper nouns are capitalized. Tubezone 03:45, 2 November 2006 (UTC)
In my opinion both translations are good. The difference between them, is that "El Día de los Muertos" is more emphasised than "Día de Muertos". The use of the article "El" gives a especial importance to the day, because it defines the day as one in a kind. It gives the day a special meaning that there is only one day like it per year. However, it is acceptable to use both translations.

Park lovers we can say that both are correct.. and I'd like to add that November 1st is "Dia de todos los Santos" which means that all "Saints" are, somehow, remembered and they are supposed to celebrate that day. We think that the translations are good and have the same meaning. When you say "El Día de muertos" is more formal and it will be a nice title for the article. Mexican cuisine

1) the stub/category combination, {{Mexico-cuisine-stub}} / Category:Mexican cuisine stubs, is currently listed for deletion at Stub types for deletion. My personal opinion is that it shouldn't be too hard to fill up the stub category just by creating articles for all the redlinks in the list in the Mexican cuisine article.

2) For the Mexican cuisine article itself, it would be very helpful to add some annotations to the list of Traditional dishes, and maybe even divide the list into various subcategories. BlankVerse 08:45, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

One main mexican dish in our cuisine is called "Enchiladas". They are made of tortilla covered with "mole", that is a mixture of different kinds of chillis and chicken. They can be decorated with cream and cheese. Most of mexican dishes are really spicy. Mexicans can tolerate great amounts of chilli in every dish, but this doesn't mean that every dish must have chilli on it. Hi, we are Taco Team. We don’t agree with the deletion of Mexican cuisine stub. In fact, we would like to write about the typical Mexican food such as: “pambazos”, “tacos”, tortilla”, “enchiladas”, etc. We think this is an important topic because it truly represents Mexican culture. We have a great variety of dishes which are normally prepared with chili; many people can't stand the spicy flavor of mexican dishes, but once you get used to it, you can't stop eating it! This article is no longer slated for deletion. It is getting some attention to make it into a serious article worthy of Wikipedia. Originally, the text was unsourced and tending towards a POV attack on Mexico. It is now a more objective treatment of the serious problem that Mexico has with crime.

It's still got a serious POV problem, but mostly because of the difference between how crimes are reported in the USA vs. Mexico. For example, the bank robbery rate in Mexico is infintesimal compared to the USA, but there's few head to head statistical comparisons that I can find. The homicide rate in Mexico is going to include traffic accident deaths (all traffic deaths in Mexico are considered crimes) that don't get counted as actual violent homicides in the USA. AAMOF, the homicide rate reported in the USA is questionable because what qualifies as a homicide varies from state to state, for example, in some states a drunk-driving death is a negligent homicide, in others it may not be. Mexico follows the French model, thanks to Juarez, thus does not have the delineation between felonies and misdemeanors the English model contries like the USA has.

We are Los boogeys team and we are Mexicans. We think the article Crime in Mexico need some attention because it needs a special part about REASONS FOR NOT DENOUNCE. We saw the article and we didn't find the reasons why people don't want to denounce. We say that because it is truth that the laws allow criminals to know all your personal information. Because of that, someone who denounces a criminal could be in a serious danger. Criminals can threat and even murder people who denounce them. Human geography

Is Mexico part of North America, Central America, or what? And do we abide by the United Nations geoscheme, or conventional usage, or National Geographic?

Do the Spanish-speaking world and English-speaking world disagree over where to "place" this wonderful country? I tried to follow the dispute between Wikipedians over this matter, but it's scattered all over your web site. --Wing Nut 16:17, 23 June 2006 (UTC)



It's funny how people often fight for Mexico's "place in world". I am really sure of one thing: The two months I have spent here, had taught me a lot of this wonderful country. It has a great variety of pluricultural groups, food and very different weathers from zone to zone. Believe me, I am really familiarized with this fact. In Toluca for exmaple, people is known for being very kind and helpful. I have seen them working on the streets, selling stuff or just simply walking next to me. Their customs and culture can differ a lot, and what I personally like is that no one acts as an one inidividual person. They adopt the good part of others and become what Mexican people really is. So, I think Mexico is not just from one side or another, it is the combination of both. There's no place we can assign for it and at the end this really doesn't matter. In Mexico, as in most of Central American and South American countries, Spanish is the national language. Because of this, it is common for non-Latin countries to mistakenly associate Mexico with the other Latin countries. However, Mexico belongs geographically to North America, even if it is the only Latin country of this region, along with the United States of America and Canada. However, if you want to determine culturally where it belongs, it can be said, it's in a mid-point. Through out the years, Mexico has adapted to not only the USA culture, but it also preserves its Latin culture. The Pancakes Team It is difficult to locate Mexico in North America, Central America or South America not only for its greographical situation, but also for its mix of politic, cultural and linguistic variations. This aspect makes Mexico a very versatile country as it does not completely have a South American or North American orientation. But this indefinite location influences in the politic life of Mexico when it is almost obligated to take a decision about its help for Latin American countries or for United States. This situation has caused a lot of controversy because both sides (North and South) press Mexico and sometimes people say that it acts like a puppet of the interest of abroad nations. It could be said that some countries use this country as a mediatic element, as a judge of the conflicts between the countries. Mexico vs México

Now, is there a big reason for the México article redirecting to Mexico and not the other way? It's customary to name mexican cities, states, etc with the proper accented title, but the main article about the country is the opposite. Is there a good reason for that? Mexico (without the accent) is how the country is known in English, so that's the name used as per the MoS. Other less known towns/places may keep the original spelling of their name. -- Rune Welsh | ταλκ 14:21, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Yes, PLEASE can I get some help with this... two articles that desperatly need some attention & quality upgrading are the Niños Héroes & the saint patrick's battalion. I also think that the latter should be in the scope of this wikiproject. Mexican American War Contribution

Hi, I read your comment and I found some information. I hope you find it useful. Mexican-American War This war consisted in the secession of Mexican territories to the USA (Alta California and Santa Fé de Nuevo México) under the negotiations of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Mexico lost about 1,300,000 km² which represented almost half of its territory. This war was very important for both countries, Mexico and USA, and point out the destiny of each country, this historical fact has intervened in many actual aspects of each in country like principally economy. We think the consequences of this war are still being seen principally in the economy aspect, because territory is a very important part for the economy of any country because of the commerce, production, natural resources, people etc. This can be seen with the comparison of economies of Mexico and USA besides other problems that also contribute to the bad economy of Mexico and the better economy of USA.Blueapple23 21:55, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Blueapple23

I have never heard about that. At least thats not a tradition in Jalisco, Tamaulipas or Nuevo Leon where I have lived. I believe article isnt true. Abögarp 00:28, 23 December 2006 (UTC)


I have never heard about that also. For example in my country, Ecuador, there is a tradition of the nine "posadas" before Christmas. I think maybe the flowers are related with this subject. Families often get together in one house, pray and eat the nine nights before. Personally, I love to attend to these "Christmas parties".

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Mexico is a North American country vandal

I want to desperately ask for the community support in this issue. Ever since I joined Wikipedia this very specific user is trying to promote the false idea that Mexico is geopolitically part of Central America, or trying to give the idea that Mexico is considered part of Central America (geographically) most of the times. We all know that is not true.

It is impossible to me to stop his very biased edits. I know that some geographers consider the territory east of Isthmus of Tehuantepec physiographically part of Central America, but his biased edits and the words he uses are only to confuse the reader and give the "feeling" that Mexico is part of Central America.

First of all check the articles Mexico, Geography of Mexico, Central America and North America. Also Mesoamerica and Middle America. I know some of you can clean up the words he's using to give the bad impression that Mexico is part of CA.

Secondly, please check my evidence about his behaviour.

User Corticopia (his current user account) is the same person that used the accounts User:E Pluribus Anthony, User:Cogito ergo sumo, User:Ex post factoid, User:Lucky Mustard and User:A the 0th. His edits follow the same pattern: ignore the evidence provided to prove that in some parts of the world America is considered a single continent (and that North America = Canada, US and Mexico), ignoring that Central Americans do not consider Mexico part of this region, ignoring that in most educational systems Mexico is not included in Central America.

When he could not fight the overwhelming evidence proving him wrong (and after I won a case of suckpuppetry against him [3] and [4]), he started editing the articles in order to say "Mexico is in southern North America", and lately to avoid saying "North America" at all and including the less used and very obscure term "Middle America". Please check the articles those accounts edit. The very same pattern.

Please check the evidence I provide to probe those users are Corticopia here. It is very important that you read the whole evidence.

However, if you chose to ignore the evidence I present (I do it so you can understand how long and how deep this problem is) please just help to clean up the articles. Alex, I thought this issue was already settled down, especially after the poll, to which Corticopia and all participants fully agreed in Talk:Mexico. At least, on my part, I have already told you, if you believe your evidence is strong enough, then simply report him for sock puppetry yourself.
Now, per consensual agreement in Talk:Mexico (it might not be the case in other articles in which he is participating), the introductory paragraph will only state that Mexico is located in North America, whereas the Geography section will contain, all possible existing neutral geographical terms and definitions (ergo NPOV): geopolitical, geographical and physiographical, and that included "Middle America". This term, which I don't particularly like, is widely used in geography in the English speaking world, so it is not obscure. It is in fact used by CIA Factbook. It is rather in disuse, but nonetheless, existing. As such, it was included in the Geography section.

I understand what you're saying. As I told you, I'm not accusing him of sockpuppetry since he's using just one account right now (that I know). I am presenting my evidence for the users to know he's a well known user, famous for using personal attacks, editing articles with particular bias and also by using sockpuppets. However, talking about "Middle America", it is very obvious that his edits and his wording are only to favour the wrong idea that Mexico is part of CA. Please check the recent edits in the articles Central America, Mesoamerica and Geography of Mexico where he's not commited to write in a very direct way that Mexico is not considered geopolitically part of CA. He reverts my edits. And about "Middle America", I am not saying it does not exist. It does. The important thing here is he's favouring the terms that are not widely used, just to give the impression that terms are the ultimate knowledge. And more importantly, why the article Mexico (geography section) have almost half a paragraph explaining what Central America is according to the different souces? The paragraph is not giving the definitions of Central America per se, but the definitions of Central America vis-à-vis Mexico, the country that happens to be the defining parameter of both regions (whether its the border, the isthmus or a transvolcanic belt). If Mexico's geographical, geological and physiogracial location is what gives North America and Central America their limits, it is quite obvious that these definitions should be included. Think of it the other way around, instead of saying "Central America starts at the isthmus..." you can say "North America ends at the isthmus..." same thing. Corticopia does not favor any term over any other term. After all the introduction only says "North America", whereas the Geography section elaborates on the limits of North America and Central America, and specifies a location in the geographical term "Middle America". I find it quite neutral to include all possible definitions and not just "favouring" one (North America). --theDúnadan 04:10, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
If the information should be presented in a very netural way, then the subarticle Geography should include the most extended usage, Mexico is in North America, then Mexico is partly in Central America and finally the alternate use of Mexico is in Middle America. Check the article North America, it already uses that logical order: the most extended version to the less used and finally the alternate version. It is not a matter of favoring "North America" over "Central America", just a logical order that the subsection do not follow. Insted of that, it first uses the concept of "Americas" by saying Mexico is in the middle latitudes of the Americas, then it says "southern North America". The subcontinent of North America is joined to the south east with Central America by Tehuantepec's isthmus. This is the narrowest part of Mexico and inside it are the states of Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco and Veracruz. This is the point that initiates Central America. Nevertheless in spite of the fact that some states of Mexico can been consider in Central America. Mexico continue concerning to the subcontinent of North America together with Canada, US and Greenland (Denmark). In the other hand if we ask about Mexico in the UN, for them, Mexico is considered inside the division in the region of Central America. Request for assistance with Valley of Oaxaca

Hey all - I recently created an article for the Valley of Oaxaca and am looking for help in expanding it. Unfortunately, I'm a Meso archaeologist by training, and am largely unfamiliar with a number of details concerning the valley. Specifically, the article needs a geography section and a dicussion on the more recent history - i.e., the later phase of Spanish rule through the modern era. Geographically speaking, information is needed on the geological formation of the valley and generaly geography - climate, hydrology (I can't seem to find it, but what are the names of the rivers that run through the valley?), land area, population statistics, etc. Any info/help would be greatly appreciated! In "Valle de Oaxaca" the climate is 22°C. There are several typical dishes for example: tamales oaxaqueños, mole verde(chiken with sauce),mole rojo.The typical fruit is Chicozapote

There are 2 rivers that run through the valley ("Atoyac" and "Jalatlaco")


"Valle de Oaxaca" has an extension of 3.375 km2, of this 3.375 km2 there are only 1.200 km2 of cultivable land.The valley has a Y form, and it covers three basins ("cuencas"): "Etla" to the North, "Tlacolula" to the East and "Zaachila" to the South.

Standard Infobox for the Municipalities of Mexico?

Is there a standard infobox for use on the specific pages of the various Municipalities of Mexico? I'm looking at the Cozumel article, and I think the infobox there could use some work. Teacher Wanting to Have Students Contribute to Wikipedia as Project

Hi! I am an American English teacher teaching advanced college students in Toluca Mexico. I would like to set up a project for students where they can write articles in groups (and perhaps other tasks). I am reading the instructions and plan to write an article myself to understand the process. However, I would really appreciate if a member from this project could contact me and advise me. State infoboxes

Is there a good reason for why the infobox for each state is not based on a template? A template would make the article "code" more legible and would make any future changes in apperances easier. I dont think there is a good reason for that. Agree on using templates. Im now adding the name of the 3 senators by state.. if you are working on creating a template pls consider that im currently adding the name of the senators (and its policial party) in the templates. I've looked at how you've done Yucatán, as the template is now you can either enter it that style or the current style. To try around in a sandbox use {{User:Lokal Profil/testmall}} for now and please tell me if ther is anything else thats needed or it anything looks wrong/counterintuitive. /Lokal_Profil 00:03, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
