County templates

I thought I should mention here that I have begun the process of creating county navigation templates for the Missouri counties, and of adding those templates to city and village articles. Omnedon (talk) 02:40, 11 January 2008 (UTC)

Towns?

Appealing to anyone who (unlike me) is familiar with Missouri local government: several places in the state are towns according to the Census website, but I read various places that there are no legal towns in Missouri. I take it, therefore, that these are either cities or villages; but I don't know what makes a municipality a city or a village. Could someone please go through these and sort them accordingly, both by changing their category and by fixing the in-article wording? I've moved up each such article that I've found to Category:Settlements in Missouri. Nyttend (talk) 05:44, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

The existence of legally-constited towns in Missouri was rejected in this deletion discussion, in which it was stated that there are no towns in the state. I beg to differ for two reasons: (1) Census data, and (2) the Missouri Revised Statutes. If you look at the Factfinder data for any of the towns that I mentioned above, or virtually any other that gives "town" in the infobox, you should see that it's considered a town by the Census. Moreover, state law appears to acknowledge towns in places such as §71.012:

"Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 71.015 and 71.860 to 71.920, the governing body of any city, town or village may annex unincorporated areas which are contiguous and compact to the existing corporate limits of the city, town or village pursuant to this section."

I believe that this code opens the possibility of some municipalities in the state being towns, and that the Census data proves that certain municipalities are towns. Consequently, unless there are objections, I plan to recreate and begin to repopulate this category. Your input, please? Nyttend (talk) 23:45, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

I do not have any legal experience but the wording appears to be a catchall. It doesn't establish a town category, but provides for certain powers if a community was incorporated as such. Perhaps the inclusion of "town" is meant to anticipate any future changes? Red Harvest (talk) 13:37, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm not really familiar with Missouri local government but a cursory search on the Secretary of State website does come up with this document that lists municipalities and their classifcation. None of them are towns. The towns as listed by the Census Bureau are listed as either villages or 4th class cities. Note also that towns are not among the legal municipality types. Other documents indicate that there were indeed towns but a certain law allowed all municipalities to re-incorporate and apparently all of them did. I guess it all boils down to which agency would you trust to provide municipality types, the U.S. Census Bureau or the Secretary of State of Missouri. --Polaron | Talk 17:15, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Wrong George Kessler - he's not dead

George E Kessler who is dead has been linked to George Kessler who is Board Member of the London Development Agency and is very much alive. This page seems to belong to WikiProject Missouri. Please can you de-link the pages asap. I have also left a note on the page.

Petty perhaps, but...

The article on St. Joseph indicated that Jesse James was killed in The Patee House. He wasn't, he was killed in his home which has been moved next door to the Patee House museum. I would like to encourage everyone to visit St Joseph, MO. We have a much larger history than just the Pony Express, and Jesse James. Moreta63 (talk) 12:53, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject Missouri: Articles of unclear notability

Hello,

I'm not sure I'd call it "notable", but they do have really good pizza. I'm almost always against deletion, going with the "a lousy article is better than no article" defense, but I'm not going to overly passionate about this one. mobyrock (talk) 02:58, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Page redesign

Little Dixie category

I created this category for MO (there is a page on Little Dixie, too, started by someone else) and added it to counties for which I had sources - used two lists (one dependent on slaves' accounting for 25% or more of population in 1860); also added brief histories for counties within this category which didn't have any. There may be more but that's what I could finish today - scholars vary as to which counties they assign there.--Parkwells (talk) 15:07, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

The challenging part is determining what counties constituted Little Dixie. There is no consistent criteria to apply. I've seen several compilations by historians and they don't agree. Slave ownership and type of agriculture are one aspect, but so is the time period chosen, as well as the presence of foreign born communities, etc. Red Harvest (talk) 15:33, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

Governor's Mansion article

The WikiPedia article on the governors mansion is horrid and in dire, dire need of editing. Preferably written by someone with experience. Since the Missouri Governors Mansion official website is a weak non-informative website, this article should be cleaned up.

Membership

Relatively new to Wiki and just discovered the WikiProject Missouri. I've already noticed an error on the page for Chamois, MO; the name of the town is correctly pronounced 'Chamoise' vice 'Chamoy.' Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Stoddard County Error

I don't really want to get into this editing thing, but I wanted to point this out and this is the only way I could find to do it.

The page for Stoddard County has a history section, and in that section it says "First settled in 1723, early Stoddard was Apache territory. When 1,029 Europeans lost their lives in the massacre of Little Dixie in 1798 the colonization of Stoddard was postponed for 24 years."

I believe this statement to be full of errors. St. Gen was established in 1750 and was the first permanent white settlement in Missouri, so the dates can't work.

But the worst mistake of all is the claim of Apache. In Missouri???

The Native Americans that were in Missouri were Missouri, Osage, Sac, Fox, Delaware, and the Shawnee. I have never seen a source that lists Apache in Missouri.

However, I don't have the hard sources to back that up, just enough knowledge to say I hope someone checks this out who can back it up.

Tagging Missouri State Highways

Missouri articles needing geographic coordinates

92 articles in Category:Missouri articles missing geocoordinate data do not have geographic coordinates. Coords are useful for making the article appear on Google Maps & many other mapping services; and they allow our users to click through to see the article subject location on a map. There's a short guide to on how to add geocodes to articles ... it really is very easy to do. I hope you'll take some time to ensure that Missouri is as well represented as it can be on wikipedia by fixing up the listed articles. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:14, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

Infoboxes for state parks

I've been adding infoboxes with locator maps for Missouri state parks and historic sites. E.g.: Babler State Park, Arrow Rock State Historic Site, et al. I've added the infobox to all articles through Current River State Park in the List of Missouri state parks. It would be good to know before I go too much farther down the list if there's a better template that I should be using. I figure the info I've been entering in these will useful in any relevant template.

BTW, I'm not sure how to handle Bennett Spring State Park, which already has an info box for U.S. National Register of Historic Places. For these articles I much prefer the Missouri state locator map -- I want to know where in the state the parks are, and the map that shows where Missouri is located in the U.S. is just one click away for those who don't know but care to learn.

I also added a map that shows all DNR park and site properties to List of Missouri state parks. Parks and sites that are small in area don't show up very well, though. What that page really needs is a nifty click-able map like List of Minnesota state parks. I've examined that template to see how it's built and will get around to making a Missouri version eventually unless someone beats me to it. --Kbh3^rdtalk 06:46, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Concerning a Missouri version of that Minnesota map, I've written a script to convert geographic coordinates to pixel position, and all the wrapping code needed to produce the final results. A working version is at User:Kbh3rd/Sandbox. I need to finish adding all the coordinates and tweak the positioning algorithm a little before it's ready for prime time. The dots are click-able, and I'm using blue for historic sites and red for parks. --Kbh3^rdtalk 01:50, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Udate: The dynamic map template (Template:State parks of Missouri map) is finished and instantiated at List of Missouri state parks. I've also created georeferenced stubs for all missing state park and historic site articles complete with infoboxes. Dictionary of Missouri Biography

I have scanned and OCR'd the index of the Dictionary of Missouri Biography which was published in 1999 and is an excellent (e.g., definitive) source for biographies and a good benchmark for biographies we should have. There are still some relics from the OCR I need to clean up but it should now be a useful for looking for redlinks that need to be completed.
