Dear Zindagi ([Dear Life] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help)) is a 2016 Indian drama film directed by Gauri Shinde and produced by Gauri Khan, Karan Johar and Shinde under the banners of Red Chillies Entertainment, Dharma Productions and Hope Productions respectively.[3] It stars an ensemble cast of Alia Bhatt, Ira Dubey,[4] Yashaswini Dayama, Kunal Kapoor, Angad Bedi, Ali Zafar[5] and Shah Rukh Khan, with the latter doing an extended cameo.[6] Principal photography began in early 2016 and was completed in May.[7][8]

The film released on 23 November 2016 in North America, two days before its worldwide release on 25 November 2016.[9]

Plot

The film is set in Mumbai and Goa. Kaira is a promising cinematographer. Fatima and Jackie are her two best friends. Her cheerful life becomes a nightmare when the guy she loves, a film producer, Raghuvendra ends up engaged to someone else, and for whom she breaks up with a restobar owner, Sid, in between. Her landlord turns her out of her apartment because the building association wants to rent apartments only to married couples. This serves as a catalyst for her shift to Goa to live with her parents, a fact she detests. All this ends up with her spending many sleepless nights.

While in Goa she seeks out Dr. Jehangir 'Jug' Khan, a Goan psychologist after accidentally having heard him talk at a Mental Health Awareness Conference for her insomnia. Meanwhile she meets a musician, Rumi, with whom she starts to develop feelings for but ditches before anything serious can happen. Matters with her family come to a head when Kaira bursts out at a family get-together and confronts her parents about their abandonment of her for years at her grandparents' house.

She finally narrates the story of her abandonment to Jug who tells her that she fears abandonment so much that she doesn't allow herself to commit in relationships for fear of being abandoned. He convinces her that she doesn't need to forgive her parents for abandoning her but she can as an adult see them as two regular people who made a mistake. He says "Don’t let the past blackmail your present to ruin a beautiful future". After this Kaira starts to make an effort to reconcile with her parents and also works to finish her short film.

The movie ends with a viewing of Kaira's film where she meets a furniture maker who might turn out to be a prospective lover.

Critical response

Suanshu Khurana of The Indian Express said, "One of the more distinctive qualities of composer Amit Trivedi is his ability to catch the musical brief of a filmmaker by its nose, and in that find his own evolutionary twist. For Gauri Shinde's Dear Zindagi, he has found a perfect collaborator in lyricist Kausar Munir, whose refreshing and colloquial lyrics are thoughtful and simple redrafts of life heard in Hindustani. The result is a fresh and enthusiastic set, with life’s tales told in a breezy fashion...... The album lacks variance, yet, with intricate experimentation, it manages to have many sparkling moments."[28]

A. Kameshwari of The Indian Express said, "The film... has some beautiful tracks. Its music has been composed by Amit Trivedi, and like always, he weaves magic through his tunes yet again. Kausar Munir... has written sensible and relatable songs making the album simplistic that automatically gets registered at the back of your mind... This album is a poetic version of our exact feelings... (and) a must-have album in your playlist."[29]

DJ Munks of BizAsia showbiz rated 8.5/10, saying "Amit Trivedi is a genius! He shows once again with the soundtrack of 'Dear Zindagi' that his calibre and musical talent have no boundaries and he can do a brilliant job every time with so many different genres. The album has a really good range... Most music directors would find it difficult to fit that many style in a single album with 8 songs but Trivedi makes it sound natural. The variety of instrumentation is elaborate and each song has a unique personality to it. His collaboration with Kausar Munir brings the best out of both. Lyrics are consistently great throughout the album with some being absolutely brilliant to listen to... This album is a great way to finish 2016 and will surely stay on the musical playlists for a couple of years ahead."[30]
