- August 1949 The great forest fire of 1949 in the Landes Forest burning 50.000 ha of forest land and killing 82 people.
- 27 October - An airliner flying from Paris to New York crashes in the Azores island of São Miguel. Among the victims are violinist Ginette Neveu and boxer Marcel Cerdan. Simone de Beaouvoir publishes her super-influential book "The Second Sex" on the rights of women in society.
