Afro-Spaniards is a term used to refer to Spanish nationals of Sub-Saharan African descent. It thus excludes Spanish citizens who originate in the parts of Spain which are part of the African continent (namely the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla) as well as Spanish citizens who have origins or ancestry in North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Libya and Egypt).
Although it loosely serves as a synonym for Spaniards with black, bantu or negroid features, it commonly excludes Spaniards who have Sub-Saharan ancestry yet originate in countries of Hispanic America such as Cuba or Dominican Republic.
It therefore generally refers to Spaniards with origins in countries such as Cameroon, Gambia, Mali, Senegal and the former Spanish colony and province of Equatorial Guinea.
