Although I now partly understand your changes I don't feel that leaving the two planned stations "open" and prematurely "closing" Watford Met is a solution. Template:TfLstyle

I understand the intention and appreciate the effort you have put into coding the {{TfLstyle}} template, but the one-size fits all statements that this uses for station descriptions is not helpful as they are not always reflective of the actual stations. I have deleted a number of the entries you have added to stations for the following reasons:

• Baker Street tube station - Nothing of Leslie Green's Bakerloo line station building remains or his tiling design at platform levels.
• Marylebone station - Green's station was demolished in the 1930s and a new access created through the mainline station. His tiling has been replaced with a similar scheme.
• Clapham North tube station - This was not a Morden extension station, it opened a quarter of a century earlier. Holden remodelled the original building for the extension to add escalators and added the 1920s tiling to the platform walls, but the station building was never the same as the extension ones and Holden's changes have been obliterated anyway.
• Clapham Common tube station - As for Clapham North.
• Moor Park tube station - the link to Holden is very minor as he hadn't done any work for the tube since the late 1940s and he died in 1960.
• Kensal Green station - the description was relevant to the original station building, though that wasn't opened in 1902, and it was demolished in 1980 and rebuilt.
• Morden tube station - there is already a detailed description of the station's architecture.
• Warwick Avenue tube station - there are no oxblood tiled facades as there are no above ground structures.
• Regents Park tube station - by Leslie Green - but not a typical one as it is another one that has no surface buildings.

I don't think it is going to be possible to make a set of options that give sufficient detail to the information to cover the whole system and some of the statements in the design idiom booklet are so general as to be useless. Given what I wrote above, which you seemed to accept. Why have you added the template to a load more articles today. As before, the first few of these are too generic to be useful or are just wrong. Please stop making this generic additions:

• Highgate tube station - save for one original station buildings which is a private residence, the original station was completely rebuilt in the 1930s for the Northern Heights extension. The original station is gone and the replacement above ground platforms have been disused since the 1950s. The station that people use today is below ground and has minimal above ground buildings, nothing like what was described in the template. You have just restored the incorrect information again - why?
• Arsenal tube station - Leslie Green's above ground building was rebuilt in the 1930s and the oxblood facade does not exist.
• East Finchley tube station - the templated text implied that the station was designed by others in Charles Holden's style. It was actually designed by him.

Thanks. I'm just making sure that the vast majority of tube stations have the relevant information that is supplied in the TfL-funded TfL-published document I'm linking to. I agree that there are disagreements as you pointed out, but my source is a good one, but clearly not without some level of missing information. I'm keen for these to be pointed out as there are several planning applications in/near tube stations which take "Design Idiom" as the gospel truth. In addition to issues with the templated information not being correct for particular pages, this appears to be an inappropriate use of templates. It says explicitly on the guidelines page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Template_namespace#Guidelines): "Templates should not normally be used to store article text, as this makes it more difficult to edit the content." Sorry, my understanding is that the rule means that you don't store the text of just one article in a template, as a way of hiding it from other editors. I could be wrong but my interpretation is that it's saying don't use it for article text, full stop. As it mentions, if someone wants to edit the text as it appears in the article, they will not be able to do so, because the text is embedded in the template, not the article. No please stop trying to make all of the stations fit a set of "types". There are far more than "21 styles of station building" and many of the stations have multiple phases of development and redevelopment that means that parts belong to different architectural periods, that a simple template cannot accommodate without going into a massive amount of complexity. Complexity that would make it just easier to add the correct information to the article itself directly. Information about "colours" and design standards belongs in a different article anyway. Most of this is to do with decorative colour schemes not about the physical characteristics of the buildings. The various comments about "future development" is misleading as this gives a sense that something is planned, when in most cases the guide being referenced is to guide future development if it happens.--DavidCane (talk) 14:19, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

This isn't MY list of types, it's Transport For London's list of types. I have taken the data verbatim from http://content.tfl.gov.uk/station-design-idiom-2.pdf page 199-219. This document is very clear and very official.  BRIANTIST  (talk) 14:22, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

Just because TfL have identified these types, does not mean they are correct. It may seem to be an authoritative source, but clearly the interpretations that you are making for which stations fit which types are wrong - as identified above already. A couple of examples using the template:

1. looking at the map on page 112 or 199 (same map, repeated), St Paul's tube station is listed as a being in the Central London Railway type. It isn't. It was built originally, as Post Office, by the CLR, but the station building was demolished a rebuilt in the 1930s and demolished completely and replaced with subway entrances in the 1970s (I think). There is nothing below ground of the original CLR station design. as the platforms were re-tiled in the 1980s. Your template would describe this as:

This station is one originally designed by architect Harry Bell Measures for the Central London Railway, with plain white tiled platformss, bronze finished brushed aluminium, grey granite concrete flagstone and ceramics in   blue,   biscuit and black.

 

This generic information does not give anything about the architecture of the station and is pretty irrelevant.

2. the same map gives the type for Hyde Park Corner tube station as Leslie Green. Again it doesn't fit this type very well. The original station building was designed by Green, but, since the station was given escalators in the 1930s, it hasn't been used by the station at all. The subway entrances nearer to the Hyde Park Corner are not by Green, the subway ticket hall below the road and and escalator shafts aren't by Green, only the platform tiling is by Green. Your template would give the detail for this as:

This is one of the trademark styles of stations opened in 1906/07 designed by Leslie Green. They feature oxblood red faience exteriors, ceramic tiled ticket halls and platforms distinguished by colour patterns which are unique to each station. The station colours are black, white and bronze finished brushed stainless steel, with Terrazzo floor tiles, exterior concrete flagstones, painted plaster and timber.

 

Which gives an incomplete description. Also the colours of Green's tiling are brown, white and cream.

3. the map give Kennington tube station as a Holden (Northern) station. The station building by T. P. Figgis is listed because it is the only example of the City and South London Railway's stations that remains in substantially it's original form. Your template would generate this:

This is one of a foray of Charles Holden (the Underground’s consultant architect) classically designed stations connected with the Morden extension of 1926. They feature Portland stone exteriors of a similar design, with traditional tiled interiors. The colours are black, white,   green,   light grey,   dark grey, bronze-finished brushed stainless-steel and varnished timber. The station has Terrazzo floor tiles, exterior concrete flagstones and enamel white tiles.

 

Which is just completely wrong about the building.

OK, I have loaded the information from the TfL document as best I can. If there are stations that are wrong, fine. I've copied the list of stations into the tempate talk file Template:TfLstyle/doc for ease of my checking them.

Also, please note that there are stations in the source PDF that are coded green which mean "2015 PALETTE" and not "District Victorian" or "Clarke (City)". See the Template:TfLstyle/doc for the list if it's not clear (which, it wasn't when I saw the A0 printed version, either). Briantist, I'm not trying to criticise again or put more pressure on you, but I note that you have uploaded and added File:London Underground Station design eras.png into the usage section of the template with the copyright status given on the file's details page as being released into the public domain. Whilst there is no assertion of copyright for the map or the design guide generally, that does not automatically mean that it is public domain. As the map is a variant of the tube map of which TfL is very protective, this is almost certainly not a free to use public domain image. TfL is not the UK government and the government does not usually release things directly into the public domain. It usually uses the Open Government Licence for freely released information. Previously issued government crown copyright documents become public domain after fifty years. I'm afraid, I'm going to tag this for removal.--DavidCane (talk) 11:51, 21 July 2019 (UTC)

Disruptive editing

Please stop making edits like this, this and this; I did give a reason, it is WP:TG. To expand on that, and as noted above, article content should not be generated from templates. If the template-generated information is wrong (and I see that DavidCane has found a number of errors that I didn't spot), the method of rectification is non-intuitive; and since your id numbers are not unique, altering the template to correct one article may well make several others incorrect where previously they had been correct.

Also, the lead section is intended as a summary of the main article text (see MOS:LEAD) - what you are adding is often not mentioned in the main text at all. Virtually all of these articles have a section for history, most also have a section for design or description - these are where we describe who designed the station, when and in what style. One thing that we do not do is put little coloured squares into article text, lead section or otherwise. You also meed to consider how important it is to specify the colour scheme, some of this is outright trivia.

You are also asking for references for information that is referenced in the main text, and so does not need a ref in the lead as well - see WP:LEADCITE. Some of these articles (including Arnos Grove) have previously been rated as a good article, and your edits have been compromising that status, so please also read up on good articles.

DavidCane, myself and several others have been working on these articles for many years now, and we do not appreciate you steamrollering some highly unusual methods for which you do not have consensus into well over a hundred articles. I thought I was doing the correct thing. All my edits have been well intention and followed all the rules about providing references and so forth. I don't get that adding information from a properly-referenced free, government source about station architecture is "disruptive". I don't see that your reversions of my work are doing anything other than destroying well-researched information. I thought the idea was that editors co-operated, not just reverted other peoples additions and then call them "disruptive". Can I suggest that you pause editing for now, take this idea to a suitable talk page — perhaps Wikipedia talk:WikiProject London Transport or Template talk:TfLstyle — and lay out your idea, explaining what you hope to add to articles. Other editors will be able to discuss their reservations, and hopefully you will be able to reach some sort of compromise for adding the information that you want to add.
