Biographicon[edit]

Hi ReyBrujo - I saw your comment over on Biographicon (here: http://www.biographicon.com/discussion/a17v2 ) about the GNU Free Documentation License and Wikipedia bios and replied, but I thought I should reply here as well. The GNU Free Documentation License is referred to in the Archive (history) page of every biography that came from Wikipedia. For example: http://www.biographicon.com/history/i599n/Deng_Xiaoping But it sounds like it was too hard to find given a reasonable effort, so we probably need to do something different. Please let me know what you think. I'd like to talk about this. Thanks! -Ethan Herdrick 71.198.202.86 (talk) 04:22, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

Oh, you are right, I missed that! Thanks for the clarification, and for dropping by here. I suggest a "License" link at the bottom, including the information in the Terms of Service section, or in the About section (which are the ones where people usually check first and foremost). Good luck! -- ReyBrujo (talk) 04:33, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

RE: VGChartz[edit]

Hi, I noticed you recently removed a citation I had used in List of best-selling video games to back up a combined US and Eur sales figure. The reason you gave was that "VGChartz is not a reliable source." I am not necessarily disputing this, but I have just gone over WP:V and I cannot seem to find which criterion VGChartz fails under. Looking at this company's potentially biased self-reporting (eg. here, here, or here) it appears to be reliable enough to me. Could you perhaps point me to the appropriate section where your criteria for reliability are explained? Cheers, -Thibbs (talk) 22:09, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

PS - I hope you don't mind me "hijacking" this portion of your talk. I probably should have created a new section, but this one was already so appropriately titled... Thibbs (talk) 22:09, 26 April 2008 (UTC) shifted to this new section Thibbs (talk) 23:10, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

I suppose I have phrased myself poorly. I am interested in why VGChartz fails WP:V for reliability. Does it? Essentially I'm asking if this is wikipedia policy you are applying or WikiProject Video Games policy. I can understand your edit if you are applying WPVG policy but as far as I can see WPVG does not have a monopoly on editorial policy within any part of wikipedia's boundaries. Perhaps I am wrong. Anyway don't get me wrong. I approve wholeheartedly of WPVG and if this is WPVG policy I will bow to their wishes. It does strike me as startlingly arbitrary that they have decided upon the magicbox as their reliable alternative to VGChartz. As User:Kung Fu Man pointed out in the first example of VGChartz' unreliability, VGChartz does seem to have explanations for its figures whereas the magicbox is almost devoid of this kind of information. For all the average person knows they could be pulling these figures out of the magichat.
All in all, I realize you are but one person and if I have problems with WPVG's decisions regarding reliability of VGChartz or the magicbox I should take it up with them. To clarify, though, (and I 'm not sure if you know but...) did WPVG take WP:V into account when choosing the magicbox over VGChartz to form the bulk of their citations or was this nothing more than a simple vote of preference? Thanks for being so attentive to my concerns. -Thibbs (talk) 23:10, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Sorry I've taken so long to respond. My non-wiki work is currently on the hectic side. So I went back through months worth of archives at WPVG and now I can better understand your cursory reversion of my initial edit at List of best-selling video games‎. The only thing that still eludes my research (and I haven't gone through everything yet by a long stretch) is where you folks have been getting your information about the techniques VGChartz or the magicbox employ. I have scoured their websites and while I find minimal information on VGChartz, I find abolutely no information listed at the magicbox. Having merely skimmed some of the archived WPVG posts I thought I saw something about a WPVG member having written to or otherwise interviewed the VGChartz people to learn what goes on in their case, but I didn't see anything other than speculation about how the magicbox collates its figures. If you know the answer off-hand it would save me a bunch of time, but if you are busy or don't know I'm sure the information can be found somewhere in the archives. Can you remember this detail?
Secondly, I think that for clarity's sake all pages subject to the VGChartz ban should include the {{consensus}} tag as featured in List of best-selling video games‎'s talk page. Furthermore, I think that this tag should be linked to the discussion leading to a definitive consensus from WPVG (if there is one). If there is none, I suggest that a summary be written to distill arguments against VGChartz down to a few well-sourced problems as collected and synthesized from all prior discussion (archived and otherwise) of its failures as a reliable source. I think this would be very helpful to WPVG. It was suggested in one of the archived discussions that the two biggest culprits for reintroduction of VGChartz as a source are non-WPVG-member wiki-editors who are only seeking to add one data-point or are non-neutral VGChartz-pushers if I may coin a novel charge. Speaking as an editors in the first class of re-introducers, such an explanation of VGChartz' inadequacies would have been sufficient to quiet any of my doubts if I had been directed there and I believe this would probably be equally true for other WPVG tyros. Of course I am not suggesting that you, User:ReyBrujo, take on this admittedly large task yourself, but in general does this sound like a good idea to you? Unfamiliar as I am with the internal machinations of WPVG, could a task force be set up to accomplish such a thing? In your experience is the recurrent re-introduction of VGChartz as a source a high-level or low-level problem for WPVG articles?
Thanks for your time. -Thibbs (talk) 05:03, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

New Project[edit]

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 06:07, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

WP:HAU has a new format[edit]

Due to popular demand, HAU has a new look. Since the changes are so dramatic, I may have made some mistakes when translating the data. Please take a look at WP:HAU/SA and make sure your checkmarks are in the right place and feel free to add or remove some. There is a new feature, SoxBot V, a recently approved bot, automatically updates your online/offline status based on the length of time since your last edit. To allow SoxBot V to do this, you'll need to copy [[Category:Wikipedians who use StatusBot]] to your userpage. Obviously you are not required to add this to your userpage, however, without this, your status will always be "offline" at HAU. Thanks. Useight (talk) 01:52, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

WP:HAU[edit]

Hello yet again. I regretfully inform you that the bot we were using to update the user status at Wikipedia:Highly Active Users, SoxBot V, was blocked for its constant updating. With this bot out of operation, a patch is in the works. Until that patch is reviewed and accepted by the developers, some options have been presented to use as workarounds: 1) Qui monobook (not available in Internet Explorer); 2) User:Hersfold/StatusTemplate; 3) Manually updating User:StatusBot/Status/USERNAME; or 4) Not worry about it and wait for the patch to go through, which hopefully won't take long. If you have another method, you can use that, too. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Useight (talk) 22:32, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

WP:HAU, Status, and you![edit]

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 23:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Wondering If You Could Help[edit]

Hey ReyBrujo, I was wondering if you could help me. I have been having problems with a belligerent user partaking in an edit war on [[Forrest Griffin]. I know you do not know much about Mixed Martial Arts (well I don't know if you do or don't) but my pleas for admin arbitration on the matter have gone unheeded so I was wondering if you could provide a neutral 3rd opinion on the subject. He is claiming that a fights decision was not seen as controversial even though I have provided much evidence to the contrary (please see the discussion page on said article). He has made edits that have distorted references on the page so that they cite things they should not be referencing and so that is why I believe his edits are in bad faith. I also think this because I and two other users were partaking in a discussion on how to solve this problem and he went ahead and made his own edits and undoing any reversions made to them. Please help me here because I don't want this person to simply get his way by brute force. That is not the wikipedia way.--Xander756 (talk) 05:03, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

MGS4 Numbers[edit]

On the list it says MGS4 has sold 3.31 million units but when I clicked the reference, no where on that site does it say anything about MGS4's sales. In fact, it says a different game sold 3.31 million. Is this coincidence? --Xander756 (talk) 14:23, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello ReyBrujo. I guess your referring to my recent editing of the "best selling games" article. Now I've read your past discussions about the reliability of the VGChartz.com website and that is one of the websites I selected for my citation. I also agree with your questioning of this website see as I've looked up games on this site and saw figures that didn't quite add up but I thought it was just me. Now I know my suspicions were justified. However, three out of the five games I posted had two citation each. One being VGChartz and the other backing VGChartz figures somewhat so I would like to know why those citation weren't reliable sources? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.55.219.220 (talk) 02:17, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

WP:SYN does not necessarily forbid to add up numbers, only if it is not agreed between the authors that it is correct to do so. Do you doubt, that it is ok to add up, as we did, the numbers, taken from the references? | FHessel (talk) 01:27, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

On the one hand you are trying to keep up wikipedia standards in terms of WP:SYN, on the other hand you are adding wrong numbers with a reference (I am assuming in your favor, that it has been done unintentionally), which are cited with a nonexisting header saying something absolutely different, than the reference does itself. Please be more careful, when citing references. This kind of misinformation could quickly discredit wikipedia and especially this page. |FHessel (talk) 10:34, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

VGChartz ref[edit]

Hey, I noticed your edit to List of Wii games that use the Nintendo GameCube controller. The wikilink you put in your edit summary refers to using VGChartz for citing sales numbers at whatnot, I don't believe it really works in reference to VGChartz (p)reviews. Anyways, I haven't reverted your edit (since the ign link i put up seems to be a better fit), but I felt I might as well inform you.

The source I used for the worldwide total doesn't specifically state the amount sold in Japan. While the bulk of those other sales are probably Japan (Australia/New Zealand is probably tiny), I can't say that. Maybe using the term "Other regions" or something like that? Best Selling Video Games[edit]

For the sales of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, it says 5.17 million approximately: 3.87 million in US, 1.3 million in Japan. so unless it sold 0 in the rest of the world then I was right with the sales all along, and you were wrong. Y2J The Evil Twin (talk) 13:28, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

The Magic Box: US Platinum Games Chart?[edit]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best_selling_games

I notice this page references The Magic Box and I was wondering how reliable the source was? Why did we chose to go with that source? Can we use this source in other articles? They do not list their source for this chart (that I see.) Thank you for your time.--108.2.2.183 (talk) 20:06, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi there! We once discussed at the VG wikiproject about the difference between VGChartz and Magic Box. The difference between both sites is that VGChartz does extrapolation between different sources, whereas TMB was considered a sales archive (they get numbers from NPD for USA and Famitsu for Japan, without extrapolating).
In good faith we consider TMB a good source, because we cannot prove they tweak the numbers as they wish (like VGChartz). Most of their numbers for old games are virtually impossible to come upon, since there aren't that many references for them nowadays. And yes, the numbers can be used in other articles. I have been hoping to replace TMB with multiple sources (I prefer having as many sources as possible) but we are kind of forced to keep it for very old games of the NES era.
Cheers! -- ReyBrujo (talk) 23:41, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
I've looked all over that site, and while I see they have modern numbers from NPD I can't find any indication that the numbers on the page in question actually come from NPD. As far as I can find, they just showed up one day in December 2006 or January 2007.[33][34] I don't see any mention of it in their forum archives from around that time either,[35] despite there being threads about both the November 2006 and December 2006 NPD numbers. AfD nomination of Every Little Thing (band)[edit]

Ambox warning pn.svg

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Every Little Thing (band). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Every Little Thing (band). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:09, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

List of best-selling video game franchises[edit]

Hi there, I invite you to ask a mod/admin to tell me or you to show me where on wikipedia it says that a reference cannot have multiple sources instead of continuing reverting. You're the only editor that keeps reverting it so you must think that this is a rule when it isn't. If you choose to protect the article I'll ask the mod/admin to give me a reasonable explanation and/or make an account and continue including the sourced Uncharted numbers. Thanks. 68.204.45.10 (talk) 01:44, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Discussion on linking to streamed copies of albums[edit]

Wikipedia policy allows us to link to legal streamed copies of albums. It would be useful to draw up a guideline on how and when to link to such albums; however, there is concern that it may not be appropriate as the music would not be available in all parts of the world. Is the benefit of having access to the music for most users outweighed by the fact that some users will follow a link to find the music is not playable in their region? Your view would be helpful at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums. SilkTork ✔Tea time 02:32, 16 December 2011 (UTC)

Wikimedia Stories Project[edit]

Aloha!

My name is Victor and I work with the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization that supports Wikipedia. We're chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community around the world, including those from readers, editors, and donors. Stories are absolutely essential for any non-profit to persuade new people to support the cause, and we know the vast network of people who use Wikipedia have so much to share.

I find stories that drive our annual fundraising efforts. It's important to convey the incredible diversity of people who've come to rely upon Wikipedia every day.

I'd really like the opportunity to interview you to tell your story, with the possibility of using it in our materials, on our community websites, or as part of this year’s fundraiser to encourage others to support Wikipedia.

I will be in Buenos Aires from the 10th - 11th of March 2012.

I'm hoping you will elaborate on your story with me. Please let me know if you're inclined to take part in the Wikipedia Stories Project!

Thank you,

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Reybrujo,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.34.167 (talk) 20:52, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

The article War of Souls has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

A search for reliable, secondary sources reveals an insufficient amount of significant coverage. This article fails Wikipedia's notability guidelines for elements of fiction.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Dragonlance wars[edit]

A tag has been placed on Category:Dragonlance wars requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for four days or more and it is not presently under discussion at Categories for discussion, or at disambiguation categories.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Neelix (talk) 21:15, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
