New Pages update

Hey Wikipelli/Archive 9 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.

On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).

On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! Dragon Ball Hoshi

I noticed there hasn't been an article of this made yet, I sure there will be one made sometime soon. I bring it up because a lot of people are spreading rumors about it being an actual anime instead of what it really is; simply a new arcade game released in Japan...well not entirely new persay, but still, just wanted to tell you about it since my page creating skills are that of mud ^^'

I do not know where to find instructions on how to add lines and headings to an article or how to create a reference list. Hi Abgaila! I saw the article was up for deletion. I really dislike it when articles are tagged for deletion literally within seconds of their creation. It may still be deleted (there will be discussion and a consensus will be reached. You can participate if you follow the link in the banner at the top of the page).
I am a school teacher, also, so your article caught my eye. The main thing to do now is copy/edit and make it organized. Also, reliable, 3rd party references will need to be found to establish that the school is notable. A general rule of thumb with high schools is that they are given articles. I think this one qualifies.
I think a good place to start would be this page. I has tips and guides for creating an article. From that page there are a number of links that will take you to sections that interest you (organization, formatting, etc.).

It's all good. I watch your page and this page so I'll see a message if you leave it. Yes, I agree, the deletion tag was way out of line less than 60 seconds after you put the article up there. The editor couldn't possibly have had time to read and think about whether or not the article was appropriate. That's unfortunate. Don't let it discourage you! Let me know if I can help. All you have to do to respond is to click the "Edit" link on the section that contains the message you wish to respond to. Alternatively, you can click the "Edit" tab at the top of your talk page and then scroll to where you wish to reply. :) Wikipelli Talk 12:33, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
I have noticed that when I add an existing reference to a different part of the article, it re-lists the reference in the reference list and re-numbers the internal citation instead of using the same number and leaving the reference list alone. Is this supposed to happen? Also, is there a page that instructs people on how to add an image? There are several images of the buildings I would like to add to the Wikibox but it seems to me I have to save the image somewhere or link it. Abgaila (talk) 17:05, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
Yes! Actually, I fixed a couple of those within the last few minutes and could kick myself for not doing it right in the first place!
When you add a reference, it's a good practice to give the reference a name (at the bottom of the reference box). So, the reference " Smith, Cassie (10 January 2010). "Teaching God's love". The Bryan-College Station Eagle. Retrieved 10 May 2012.", I have now given the name "teaching". It's good practice and I was sloppy yesterday. Anyway, the code is like, <ref name="teaching"><cite web.... etc etc></ref>. This way, now that the reference has a name, you can just use that name the next time you want to use the reference. The next time you want to use that reference you can click on "Named References" in the edit box and it'll show a list of references you've named. The code in the article will be, <ref name=teaching />. Simple, huh?  :) You want to name the references something descriptive so you'll be able to remember which reference is which. I'll go through and name the references now. Here's the Wikipedia page on it: WP:NAMEDREFS
Images that you want to use in the article should be uploaded using the "Upload File" link in the Toolbox on the left side of the screen. I have a question about neutrality and third-party references. I found two articles in a local magazine that mentions Still Creek recieved donations from an event (The Armadillo Dash) and an organizaion (the Bubba Moore Memiorial Group). Since the school was mentioned in a third-party source, I want to include the information in the references. That's not a problem at all - especially since they were mentioned in the source. I would say, though, that it's not necessary to put all of the donors, events, etc. in the article. Remember that it's about the school, and not about the donors! :) I think it's established that the school is supported through fundraisers, donations, etc. Wikipelli Talk 19:53, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks very much! I really appreciate that. I'm becoming increasingly irritated with the 'swat them like flies' approaches some are taking with CSD. The unfortunate thing is that the article in question was deleted WHILE I was fixing the copy/vio. :( When I clicked save I got the message "this page has been deleted"... Looking for feedback on some standard wording

I appreciate the work you are doing to encourage new editors. I understand how discouraging it must be to attempt to write an article and see it yanked away while you are working on it.

However, I am stunned that you thought there was anything to salvage in Gefs Online Flight Simulator. I double-checked and it was a word for word copy.

I do run acorns people who think that is a good way to start. I'll copy below my standard advice; I'd be interested in your feedback, as you have experience with new editors, and I would like to know if you think it strikes the right tone:

However, it is my opinion that the results constitute a Close paraphrasing of the original. I've found that if I copy and paste the material, and try to rewrite it, that it still ends up too close to the original. A better approach is to find more than one source (always desirable), then, put them aside, and write about the subject in one's own words. After writing, return to the original text, and determine whether it is too close (if you have a better memory than I do), or if some points would be better made by an explicit quote and attribution, with the quote suitably short.

I think this is an excellent tone and, you're right, the GEFS article was probably lost from the beginning. My goal on that article, though, was not to save it because I thought it was worthy, but to use it with the new editor to illustrate what was wrong and how to correct it. I don't think I'd have done as well as you did here, but my sympathies go out to new, misguided authors. Your approach above is excellent and I'll probably shamelessly 'borrow' it. You really don't owe me an apology at all. I'm not in charge and you haven't hurt me a bit (maybe some newbie editors, though). All I'm saying - and I'll I've ever said - is slow down and do things well rather than doing them fast. For all the times I've said it - here and on your talk page - you don't seem to have taken it to heart. Case in point? I read all of the link above (WP:FAST) and can't see what in the world it has to do with this issue. Can you? I'm willing to bet you meant something like this: wp:deadline. Well, I could be grumpy and say #2 does, also, but it's a nice day and I won't. ;) I think it's a great essay to print and hang on the wall by the computer! Not all the text, but maybe just the 5 individual points. You can take a look at it each time you sit down to edit!
I think you really want to be an administrator, Tomtom... which in itself is a little wrong because the goal is to make an encyclopedia, but, be that as it may, if you really want that then read through RfAs (I know you do anyway). The RfA is going to have editors that will look at the DYKs and GAs and CSD log to be sure, but they're also going to look at failed DYKs, poorly written articles, warnings for too speedy deletions... I guess what i'm trying to impress on you is that at the same time you're building up a semi-respectable log, you're building up a list of errors as well. All because of your rush for the mop (or whatever is motivating you).
As I said, it's a nice day and I'm going to go enjoy it but I'll leave with this question... I've been watching the progress on the thorium thing on the moon (sorry, the title escapes me).. and I know you're salivating over getting a GA for it but tell me, honestly, don't you feel much better about that article that you've put time and effort into improving than the Joe Rosentover article? or the Acorn Nursery School article? or all those Louisiana highway articles? I just want to do the best I can. I feel very good about the CBTA (redirect per long name) article, and I want all of my newer creations up to that standard. I will come to see the value of it, and will expand until the best it can get, which is featured.

Then, I'd consider whether I personally think it would enhance the article (create it in a sandbox and see what you think), then, just be bold and do it (or not)! Not for DYK. That thing would never be able to pass – there would never be a good enough hook for it to be on the main page. Fivefold is a goal for that, as my current article goal is 15K bytes per article, which fivefold seems to be for that. My goal is GA for it, not DYK. Three thoughts. First, "lists of" things are well worth staying away from. Just go and look at all the "list of bus routes in XXXX" anger and frustration and blood and sweat and tears and AfDs to get an idea why. Second, sheer number of something-or-other (shops or legs or iTunes downloads) is not enough to establish notability. The only thing that truly establishes notability is significant coverage in independent reliable sources. So, don't look how many shops there are, just look up your sources. How many good sources are there, and how much real coverage do they give to the topic?
Third, reading old RfAs is a really good idea. But read them properly; from the top down. When you see an interesting question, look at the candidate's answer, and decide whether you agree with it. Only once you've decided that for all the questions, go and look at the Opposes. Do the Opposers follow your opinion or not? It takes a very long time to understand what a lot of all this nonsense is about :)

Hi Wikipelli. Please check again the Z for Zachariah plot summary and either remove the tags about needed editing or explain why further shortening is necessary. Some other plot summaries are similar in length, as for Wuthering Heights and Gulliver's Travels for example. New Page Triage/New Pages Feed

Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.

The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

autopatrolled given to people who're not responsible

I think we might be fighting a bit of a lost war here. This guy TAP is obviously irresponsible, and I don't understand how no one else sees it. About a month ago there was a similar situation with Jaguar, who created almost 10,000 stubs with multiples issues and ignored all the warnings people left him for months. And in the end nothing happened. No mass deletion, no ban, no policy change, nothing.

I think a policy along the lines of what you suggested, such as "no mass creation of stubs before you have AP" would make sense.

I also think the page listing wikipedians by number of articles created should be removed, as it's very dangerous. People like TAP and Jaguar don't care about the encyclopedia, they only create these tens of thousands of stubs because they want to go up in the ranking. What happened about a month ago was that TAP saw Jaguar doing it and he wanted to start doing it. I don't see the point of having that stupid ranking. It only encourages people like Jaguar and TAP to create stubs with errors that do more damage than good because they don't add any information and they introduce errors that then other people have to go and fix by the thousands. And serious contributors don't care about the ranking because they know it's meaningless. So why have it.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

Of course the ranking is meaningless! I'm trying to do what the goal of the Encyclopedia is - article on everything notable. "irresponsible" - Over about 3 stubs which I regret and have changed since. "multiple issues" - have you seen my most recent articles, all 1100+ of them? TAP, I suggest you disengage from this thread, as it's probably not a great place for you to be continuing it. (But I might indulge myself, when I have a little more time...)
Azylber, I suggest that you re-read WP:AGF and WP:NPA, and also consider that if you feel you are "fighting... a war" and your aims are "bans and policy changes", then you may have lost your way on Wikipedia a little. (See WP:BATTLEGROUND).
As TAP's mentor I'm slightly better informed on the background, which tells me that "TAP saw Jaguar doing it and he wanted to start doing it" is way, way off the mark, and a very foolish assumption to throw around. TAP does have constructive input from a number of editors very experienced in particular topic areas (Anna and Blofeld are two, but others are involved as well), and he has demonstrated an ability to learn from them and edit constructively and beneficially.
Once again, the autopatrolled right (which is what seems to have prompted this outburst of yours) is for the benefit of patrollers (and thereby the encyclopedia), not for the purpose of a "war" engaged in by yourself or others who want to constantly revisit TAP's past, current, or perceived faults. (If your problem is actually with the table/page you mention, then by all means nominate it for deletion - I don't see it as particularly useful.)

Fredericksburg DYKs

I just wanted to thank you for your great work on Fredericksburg articles. I noticed it today when both Fall Hill (Spotsylvania County, Virginia) and Walker–Grant School were on DYK, and saw in the histories that both articles were largely your work. I was born and raised in Fredericksburg, and my family still lives there; in fact, I attended Walker–Grant and knew Butler Franklin, the late doyenne of Fall Hill. If you're working on NRHP properties in Fredericksburg, you may be interested to know that my family has owned the Rowe House on Hanover St. since its construction, and though it has been mostly empty since my grandmother died in 2003, my sister just moved into a small part of the house, and renovations should begin next month. If you ever want to create an article on the house, I may be able to help you (I'd refrained on creating a page myself due to the COI policy).

Thanks so much for your message! I got started on Columbiana County, Ohio NRHPs and then Spotsylvania NRHP properties (I live in Spotsy) and, when those were largely finished, I started on Fredericksburg. I'm embarrassed to say that I've lived here nearly 30 years and haven't visited or taken the time to investigate many of the places (rather like New Yorkers never visiting the Statue of Liberty, I guess!).
