Congratulations! Today, we thank you for Judith Resnik, about "one of the original six American women astronauts who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster"! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:58, 30 August 2022 (UTC)
This is to let you know that the above article has been scheduled as today's featured article for 17 September 2022. Please check that the article needs no amendments. Feel free to amend the draft blurb, which can be found at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/September 2022, or to make comments on other matters concerning the scheduling of this article at Wikipedia talk:Today's featured article/September 2022. I suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from two days before it appears on the Main Page. Thanks and congratulations on your work!—Wehwalt (talk) 20:09, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you today for the article, introduced: "This article is about the Next Nine, the nine astronauts selected for Projects Gemini and Apollo in 1962. They were the next most famous group after the Mercury Seven, although few astronauts are much remembered today. They are also widely regarded as the best group ever chosen. Six of the nine flew to the Moon (Lovell and Young twice), and Armstrong, Conrad and Young walked on it as well. Seven of the nine were awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor (one posthumously)."! - It's amazing what's going on on your talk between announcement and appearance, thanks for new FA and GAs and DYKs also! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:36, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
... and today I wrote an article about music premiered today, Like as the hart. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:46, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter
The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.
At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!
If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. The judges are Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. DYK for David Dexter
On 4 September 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article David Dexter, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that David Dexter, who wrote the New Guinea volume in the series Australia in the War of 1939–1945, was a commando who served in East Timor and New Guinea? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/David Dexter. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, David Dexter), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Four Award
Four Award | ||
Congratulations! You have been awarded the Four Award for your work from beginning to end on Rupert Downes. — Bilorv (talk) 19:05, 4 September 2022 (UTC) |
Congratulations! Not many Four Awards given more than 15 years after the author created the article, but this is one of them. It isn't quite the largest creation-to-FA gap on the list, but I think 11 years 9 months is a record for GA-to-FA gap. In any case, it's a testament to how hard you've worked writing content for most of Wikipedia's existence. — Bilorv (talk) 19:05, 4 September 2022 (UTC)

Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 September. It will be on all wikis from 8 September (calendar).
- Some wikis will be in read-only for a few minutes because of a switch of their main database. It will be performed on 6 September at 07:00 UTC (targeted wikis) and on 8 September at 7:00 UTC (targeted wikis).
- On Special pages that only have one tab, the tab-bar's row will be hidden in the Vector-2022 skin to save space. The row will still show if Gadgets use it. Gadgets that currently append directly to the CSS id of
#p-namespaces
should be updated to use themw.util.addPortletLink
function instead. Gadgets that style this id should consider also targeting#p-associated-pages
, the new id for this row. Examples are available. [1][2]

Operation Hurricane scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the Operation Hurricane article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 3, 2022. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 3, 2022, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 13:43, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

Rollback?
Hello, you rollbacked my edit here. Could you let me know why? Thanks, --Ferien (talk) 10:10, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- There is nothing wrong with the article. I will not permit maintenance banners under any circumstances. Note that 3RR does not apply to me. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 10:13, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- You are right, there is nothing wrong with the article itself at present. But it is not a maintenance banner. There are multiple copyright violations in the history of the article that need revision deletion. That template was there to request revision deletion. I don't see how 3RR is relevant here, or still how rollback was appropriate. --Ferien (talk) 10:16, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- It is today's featured article. There is special remit to protect it against vandalism. Take the maintenance banners someplace else. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 10:23, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- There was vandalism/copyright violations that needed to be RevDelled... by reverting that RevDel template, you were leaving these copyright violations in the history on today's featured article, which I'd argue is worse than leaving a tag on there that unregistered editors can't see and would probably be removed in a few hours. I do not see how you needed to note that "3RR does not apply to you" (even though it does, just considerable leeway is given to you), as I did not revert your edit and was not interested in doing so until this discussion was resolved. That is why I came here and didn't just revert back. You could even say this was an abuse of rollback on your end because you reverted a good-faith edit that was trying to help remove a copyright violation, and gave no explanation until I asked for it. --Ferien (talk) 10:43, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

- And I would argue that placing a banner on the page is much worse than any copyright violation in the article history. Seek consensus before placing banners. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 11:10, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
- There is no need for consensus to mark a copyright violation, according to Wikipedia:Copyright violations, which is not just a policy but also a policy with legal considerations. While I could have placed this on an admin's talk page, and will do in future for cases like these, there is nothing I can find saying I cannot tag the article itself, and you did not go to another admin to ask for RevDel, you just rollbacked my edit and left copyright violations in the history of the article. Seeing as you have not provided a reason for rollbacking my edit after I have asked 3 times why rollback was necessary, I'm going to move this discussion to WP:XRV. --Ferien (talk) 13:42, 17 September 2022 (UTC)

rel
attribute of links. Further details are in T315209.

- Visual diffs will become available to all users, except at the Wiktionaries and Wikipedias. [10]

Shores up
Apologies for having to amend your text, but though we should avoid double phrasing like that. Can you find the original WT:MILHIST discussion of Wiki-tan? Buckshot06 (talk) 06:22, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
- No problems. I was about to amend it myself and got an edit conflict. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 06:28, 27 September 2022 (UTC)

Princess Elizabeth's wedding cakes
Hello Hawkeye7. Thank you for your input on my page Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten's wedding cakes regarding it being a notable subject. This is my first time having a talk page about any of my submissions so I'm not sure how to proceed. Could you let me know what I do next? I'm keen to get this right. Additionally, I don't know where I should make the amendment to the DYK tag line. Could you help me with that too? Thanks! BJCHK (talk) 07:05, 30 September 2022 (UTC)

DYK for William Anders
On 1 October 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article William Anders, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that William Anders took the iconic photograph Earthrise (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/William Anders. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, William Anders), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
