- December 29 – Hypothetical intelligent life on Gliese 581 d with radio antennas pointed toward Earth would watch the events of September 11, 2001 unfold on live television.

- Brood X, the largest brood of North American seventeen-year cicadas, will emerge.
- CVN-80, the United States Navy's proposed replacement for the USS Nimitz (CVN-68), to be commissioned.
- Costa Rica has pledged to become a completely carbon-neutral nation by this date. The target date has been set by President Oscar Arias.[1]
- CityRail will commence phasing out its 1970–1977 V-Sets for newer, more modern cars. The new trains are currently unknown.
