Plot

Shaina (Jaqueline Fernandez) is a psychiatrist living in Poland. One day, her father brings a marriage proposal and asks her to meet Himanshu (Randeep Hooda). Himanshu and Shaina meet in a train, where Shaina reveals about her ex-boyfriend, Devi Lal Singh then she tells about her experience with him.

Devi Lal Singh (Salman Khan) is an adventurous youth, who is always looking for a 'Kick' or adventure in life. Due to his daredevil attitude, he never stays in one job for long. He has resigned from 32 companies as he feels the kick is missing. When Shaina first meets Devi, she is trying to help her friend elope with her lover. Devi rescues them both and helps her mother to follow them and reach the temple. When asked why, Devi replies, because of the kick. Shaina initially dislikes Devi because of his thrill seeking attitude. Later, when she realizes that Devi is a good hearted person, she starts to fall for him. Shaina and Devi decide to get married. On Shaina's suggestion, Devi accepts a job in a chemical lab, but he resigns in a few days after suffering again from lack of Kick. When Shaina hears about it, she breaks up with him. He also breaks up with her and moves away after telling her that he is going to get another job in which he won't suffer from lack of kick. Shaina leaves for Poland, where her parents live, and does not get seen by Devi for a year.

Himanshu, who is a police inspector, comes to Poland to catch a thief. The robber, called 'Devil', targets all the rich people associated with Shiv Gazra (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a corrupt businessman, and robs them just for fun. The robber is none other than Devi. After Himanshu is unsuccessful in catching Devil, Devi contacts Himanshu and refers to him as "partner" and insults him by calling him a loser. He also hints where his next robbery will be, which brings Himanshu to Poland.

Meanwhile, Shaina spots Devi in Poland. He has come there for treatment after losing his memory in an accident. Shaina, who is a psychiatrist, offers to handle Devi's case and decides to take him home. It is later revealed that Devi is just bluffing. His real plan is to befriend and fool Himanshu and rob Shiv, who will be coming to Poland for a deal worth crores of rupees. Devi enters a charity function and robs Shiv, who was about to invest a huge amount of money in a foreign firm. During the robbery Himanshu and Shaina discover Devil's true identity. Devi escapes by jumping from a building and rides a bus. He is then chased by cops led by Himanshu. After a long chase many cops gets destroyed but he gets cornered by Himanshu with few cops, but he escapes by jumping off the bridge. Unfortunately the bus falls into the river, and the cash is destroyed in the process. Devi then celebrates his failure. Himanshu spots and warns him that if he tries to rob again he will be killed, but Devi challenges him by saying that he will rob a huge party fund worth 500 crore rupees. Devi's true intentions or good deeds are revealed by his father Lal Singh (Mithun Chakraborty), he tells Shaina with his flashback that his son is committing robberies to help poor children who are suffering from diseases and need lakhs of rupees for treatment. Devi once saved a girl named Jhumki by getting 20 lakhs in another way after getting a letter sent by her dead parents. When a doctor tells him that severals of children are suffering from diseases, he decides to save them by performing robberies in order to get the money after knowing that this will give him a lots of kick. Later, Devi (Making himself as Devil) goes to steal the party funds, only to find Shiv and his gang waiting for him. After a long fight with Shiv and his gang, Devi kills Shiv. He hands over all the money to his father. Himanshu gets ready with many officers to shoot Devi, but millions of kids block his way. It turns out that November 14 is Children's Day, and the children are going to pray to Devi and thank him for saving them. Himanshu realizes that all the robberies Devi did was actually for the kids. At the epilogue, Devi joins the police force and the home minister hands him Devil's case. He and Shaina get together once again in the end......

In 2009, Ravi Teja was first approached for the lead role in the Hindi remake of the movie.[citation needed] Producer Sajid Nadiadwala initially signed A. R. Murugadoss as the director,[5] but he was replaced by Shirish Kunder after Murugadoss was unable to direct the film.[6] Apart from Ileana D'Cruz,[7] who starred in the original 2009 film of the same name,[8] Deepika Padukone,[9] Anushka Sharma,[10][11] Sonakshi Sinha,[12] Priyanka Chopra,[13][14] and Angela Jonsson[15] were considered for the female lead. After much discussions, Jacqueline Fernandez was signed on to act in the film.[16] US-based Abhijat Joshi, who had written the scripts for Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and Lage Raho Munnabhai was approached to write the script in 2009. Nadiawala wanted the script to be prepared during the release of 3 Idiots, when Joshi had come back to India.[17] Chetan Bhagat eventually wrote the script for the film which is based on Vakkantham Vamsi's script.[18]

Principal photography

Nadiadwala and his team visited South Korea in September 2011 at the invitation from the Korea Tourism Organization, and he signed an agreement to shoot portions of this project and others in that country.[6] The shooting of the film began on 27 July 2013 in Scotland,[19] where Khan shot a car crash scene and helicopter crash scene in Glasgow.[20] Shooting was also done in Delhi.[21] Some scenes were shot at Mehboob Studios in February 2014[22] and at the Film City studio in Mumbai.[22] In October 2013, while the shooting was in progress outside the city of Mumbai, the Film Studio Settings & Allied Mazdoor Union asked Sajid to pay them wages for one and a half shifts, which he refused. The workers stopped shooting for a week and only resumed when Sajid agreed to the worker's demands.[23] The shooting of the movie Roy had to be postponed due to Fernandez's commitments to this movie.[24] Fernandez started learning the Urdu language specifically for the film with a coach who was hired by Khan.[25] While shooting was underway in Mumbai in March 2014, Khan's body double, Ajay, was injured while shooting a stunt scene. He was supposed to jump from the first floor of a house onto a railway track, but went through the sugar glass, injuring his face.[26] He required hospitalization.[26] The film's climax was shot in Poland.[27] Khan wanted to shoot part of the film in United Kingdom, but he was refused a visa by the authorities.[28]

Marketing

The teaser poster was released on 9 June.[18] Khan had decided to release the theatrical trailer of the film in a single screen theater called Gaiety Galaxy, in Mumbai with his fans on 15 June because he considers single screens lucky.[29] The trailer became the most-liked Indian film trailer on YouTube with nearly 100,000 likes earned. It is also among the most-watched Indian film-related videos alongside the promos of Krrish 3 and Dhoom 3. The video earned more than 16 million views in a month.[30][31]

Soundtrack

The soundtrack was composed by Himesh Reshammiya, Meet Bros Anjjan and Yo Yo Honey Singh. Himesh Reshammiya shared during the making that his song "Jumme Ki Raat" was sung by Mika Singh and Palak Muchhal and that it was great fun and would be a chartbuster. Its video was released to YouTube on 20 June. Salman Khan made his playback singing debut with the romantic number "Hangover" with Shreya Ghoshal.[32] The audio of "Hangover" was launched on 1 July and its video on 4 July. The Honey Singh number "Yaar Naa Miley" was released on 12 July.[33][34] There is another romantic ballad called "Tu Hi Tu", sang by Mohammed Irfan. However, when the whole album was released on 7 July, there was an additional song called "Hai Yehi Zaindagi", also sung by Mohammed Irfan. Salman Khan has also sung for different versions of the other songs in the album.

Critical reception

Kick has received positive to mixed reviews from critics.

Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama stated, "KICK is a paisa vasool, seeti-maar entertainer. Get ready for a Tsunami called KICK at the ticket window. It is sure to rewrite box-office records. Salman fans, rejoice. KICK is a sure-shot B-L-O-C-K-B-U-S-T-E-R. To quote a dialogue from the film: 'Woh apni Eidi lene zaroor aayega'". He gave the movie 4.5 stars. Bollywood life too gave the film 4.5 stars with review stating "Kick isn’t just reinventing Salman’s work portfolio, but it is also going to rewrite box-office figures and previous records set by the actor. Kick is a full on entertainer that will give you the much needed ‘kick’ in cinema halls this weekend!" Sarita Tanvar from dna gave the movie 4 stars and called the a the movie a non-stop entertainment and SalmanKhan at his best. Don't miss it.Saurabh dwivedi from india today too gave the film 4 stars and stated " This film with rule over everybody'shearts and minds. The film is replete with all things Salman, and it's a complete paisa vasool watch. It's a masala offering for families, students, kids, and everyone in between."Times of India also gave a positive review and rated it with 3.5 stars.They stated " Kick is Bollywood biryani, a masala movie spiced with the superstardom of Salman Khan, garnished by charming Jacqueline, smouldered over the wry talent of Randeep Hooda. Kick is not for lovers of fine filmi foie gras, but for those who want a hearty Eid banquet to enjoy".Menxp team gave the film 4 stars and praised the film for salman's acting,story and misic. Neha Prashar Gupta of bollywood3.com gave the film 3.75 rating and stated " On the whole, Kick is a perfect Edi for all Salman fans, and one cannot just miss what it has to offer. With Salman’s action and comedy, Jacqueline’s hotness, Randeep’s appeal and Nawazuddin’s magic, Kick is sure shot blockbuster, which is a must watch with the entire family". Komal Nahta from etc also gave the film 4 stars.Omar qureshi zoom channel editor in chief also gave a refreshing review with a rating of 3.5 stars.[35] Raja Sen of Rediff gave it 3 out of 5 stars and opined that "Kick is Salman's best film in a decade".[36]

Aparna Mudi of Zee News gave it 3 out of 5 stars and stated, "The movie is exactly what it promises – a larger than life Salman Khan movie which the director knows will go down well with his massive fan following".[37] Mohar Basu of Koimoi gave 3 stars out of 5 and noted that "Kick is no Ek Tha Tiger but it is an effectively enjoyable film that crackles enough to gives us bang for our buck!".[38]

Rachit Gupta from Filmfare gave the movie 3 out of 5 and called it "a brainless romp".[39] Shubha Shetty Saha from Mid Day gave the movie 2 out of 5 and called it "a bizarre movie".[40] Anupama Chopra from Hindustan Times gave the movie 2.5 out of 5 and called it "an outrageously silly film".[41] Rajeev Masand from CNN-IBN gave the movie 2.5 out of 5 and said "it doesn't make much sense".[42] Rahul Desai from Mumbai Mirror gave the movie 2 out of 5 and called it "harebrained, patronizing and regressive at most points".[43] Suhani Singh from India Today gave the movie 1.5 out of 5 and called it "unimaginative and unoriginal".[44] Saibal Chatterjee from NDTV gave the movie 2 out of 5 and said "it provides a kick only sporadically".[45] Shubhra Gupta from The Indian Express gave the movie 2 out of 5 and called it "unjhelable".[46] Deepanjana Pal from Firstpost says "even by Salman Khan's standards, this is an idiotic film".[47] Sudhish Kamat from The Hindu calls the film "downright stupid".[48]

Kick made a total worldwide collection of ₹375 crore (US$45 million) in four weeks.[2]

India

On its opening day, Kick earned around 26.5 crores ₹265 million (US$3.2 million), making it the second highest non-holiday opening grosser behind Dhoom 3. The film had similar collections on its second day, at around ₹2,260 million (US$27 million) itself.[49] The collections on Sunday saw a jump as it went to ₹290 million (US$3.5 million), to take its weekend total to ₹810 million (US$9.7 million).[50] On its first Monday the film went on to make around ₹140 million (US$1.7 million), and on Tuesday the film showed a big increase due to Eid and collected a record total amounting to approximately ₹2,260 million (US$27 million). On Wednesday, it earned a further ₹200 million (US$2.4 million).[51] And on Thursday the film collected around ₹140 million (US$1.7 million), taking its opening week total to ₹1.55 billion (US$19 million) nett, the second highest after Dhoom 3.[52] It grossed around ₹85 million (US$1.0 million) on its eighth day, around ₹100 million (US$1.2 million) on its ninth and ₹130 million (US$1.6 million) on its tenth day, taking the second weekend to ₹315 million (US$3.8 million), the third highest behind Dhoom 3 and 3 Idiots. The ten-day domestic total was thus ₹1.87 billion (US$22 million) net. With this, it also became Salman Khan's highest grosser in India, beating Ek Tha Tiger.[53]

On the Mumbai circuit the film had a strong opening when it collected ₹31 crore (US$3.7 million) from its first four days at the box office.[54][55][56][57] The film also had a strong opening in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, when it collected about ₹17.7 crore (US$2.1 million) from its first four days at the box office.[54][55][56][57] In the East Punjab, C. P. Berar, Central India, and Rajasthan circuits, the film made ₹26.2 crore (US$3.1 million) from its first four days.[54][55][56][57] In the West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and Orissa circuit, the film made a total of ₹9.18 crore (US$1.1 million) from its first four days at the box office.[54][55][56][57] In the South Indian circuit, the film made ₹8 crore (US$960,000) from its first four days.[54][55][56][57]

Kick is Salman Khan's 7th consecutive film to join the ₹1 billion (US$12 million) club.[58]

Overseas

Overseas earnings were ₹24.05 crore (US$2.9 million) in the first four days.[59][60] From the US theaters, the film minted ₹4.99 crore (US$600,000)($829,411) from 141 screens, while from Canada it fetched ₹1.17 crore (US$194,016) from 22 screens.[59] In its opening weekend in UAE-GCC, including Thursday's preview shows, "Kick" raked in ₹4.09 crore (US$490,000) (AED 2,500,000).[59][61] The film is running on 137 screens in the UK-Ireland region, where it fetched ₹2.44 crore (US$290,000)(£239,150).[59] From 25 screens in Australia, receipts were ₹1.48 crore (US$180,000)(A$263,095) in the first three days.[59] New Zealand and Malaysia had the lowest opening weekend total. From New Zealand it raked in ₹41.92 lakh (NZ$81,721) and from Malaysia ₹5.98 lakh (MYR 31,588).[59]

Kick at the draw of its second weekend at the overseas box office continued to hold on strongly. The film that released on the eve of Eid globally has garnered brilliant response from all and sundry. The film began on a terrific note and retained the tempo at the overseas box office as well. The film released in 125 screens in the United States, now standing at a cumulative of 9.50 crores from the region. Including its Canada figures, the film has so far raked up 12.40 crores from U.S.-Canada circuit.From its U.A.E and adjoining G.C.C circuits where the film appeared at a festive time received a great response. From Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi and other important cities the numbers remained consistent. The film has earned 19.50 crores along from the region.

According to Box Office India, the film has grossed a total of $9 million overseas as of 5 August 2014.[62]

Pakistan

The film became the highest holiday grosser ever in Pakistan beating the record of Dhoom 3 and collected 20.8 million.[63] In Pakistan, where the film catered to the ongoing Eid festivities, the film at the conclusion of its second weekend rested at 7.40 crores. On the eve of Eid, Kick has become the highest grosser in Pakistan with an estimated earnings of Rs. 200.8 million.Salman Khan starrer Kick is breaking records all over India but not many know that film is creating havoc in Pakistan. Film was lukewarm over the weekend one which was considering Pre Eid period. Film came in full form from Tuesday onwards.[63] Film collected only 1.15 cr nett in weekend but jump from Tuesday onwards took film to 6.80 cr nett. Film collected big 1.25 cr on 2nd Friday and now 1.40 cr on 2nd Saturday. Film has total of 9.45 cr in 9 days and will cross 11 cr today. Thus Kick is now 2nd highest grosser beating Chennai Express (8.90 cr) and now only 2nd to mammoth 25 cr PKR of Dhoom 3.[63]
