The story follows the fortunes of young Ella whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drizella into the family home. But, when Ella's father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to nothing more than a [[servant girl]] covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella since she used to work in the cinders, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Yet, despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother's dying words and to "have courage and be kind." She will not give in to despair nor despise those who abuse her. And then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a prince, not merely an employee at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears as if her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella's hopes of once again encountering the charming "Kit." Alas, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella's life forever.<ref name="Disney's Live" />

The story largely follows Disney's 1950 animated adaptation, with several twists. In the 2015 version, Cinderella and the Prince meet prior to the fateful ball. At the time, he tells her he's simply a palace employee.<ref>{{cite news|last=Busis|first=Hillary|title=First look at Disney's live-action 'Cinderella' -- PHOTO|url=http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/09/23/disney-cinderella-cate-blanchett/|accessdate=23 September 2013|newspaper=Entertainment Weekly|date=23 September 2013}}</ref> The Fairy Godmother is a larger character than in previous versions, as the character in the 2015 version is initially disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before ultimately revealing herself as a magical being.<ref name="bkit062013">Borys Kit, [http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/helena-bonham-carter-boards-cinderella-572595?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+thr%2Fnews+%28The+Hollywood+Reporter+-+Top+Stories%29 “Helena Bonham Carter to Play Fairy Godmother in Disney’s ‘Cinderella’,”] ''[[The Hollywood Reporter]]'', June 20, 2013.</ref>

Cinderella is an upcoming American live action romantic fantasy film directed by Kenneth Branagh, from a screenplay written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz. Produced by David Barron, Simon Kinberg and Allison Shearmur for Walt Disney Pictures, the story is inspired by the fairy tale Cinderella by Charles Perrault and the 1950 animated film of the same name.

The film stars Lily James as Ella, with Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine (The Wicked Stepmother), Richard Madden as Kit, Sophie McShera as Drisella, Holliday Grainger as Anastasia and Helena Bonham Carter as The Fairy Godmother.

The film is scheduled to be released on March 13, 2015.[1]

Plot

The story follows the fortunes of young Ella, whose merchant father remarries following the tragic death of her mother. Keen to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother Lady Tremaine and her daughters Anastasia and Drisella into the family home. But when Ella's father suddenly and unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Relegated to nothing more than a servant girl covered in ashes, Ella is spitefully renamed Cinderella since she used to work in the cinders. Despite the cruelty inflicted upon her, Ella is determined to honor her mother's dying words to "have courage and be kind" and to not give in to despair or despise those who abuse her. Unaware that the dashing stranger she meets in the woods is a prince and not merely an employee at the palace, Ella feels she has finally met a kindred soul. When the palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, Ella hopes to attend and once again encounter the charming "Kit". However, her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand as a kindly beggar woman steps forward and, armed with a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella's life forever.[2]

The story largely follows Disney's 1950 animated adaptation, with several twists. In the 2015 version, Cinderella and the Prince meet prior to the fateful ball. At the time, he tells her he's simply a palace employee.[3] The Fairy Godmother is a larger character than in previous versions, as the character in the 2015 version is initially disguised as an old beggar who watches over Cinderella before ultimately revealing herself as a magical being.[4]

History

There are numerous ancient myths and stories containing Cinderella motifs, dating as far back as an Egyptian tale from the first century BC.[5][6] The version of Cinderella as we know it today was created by French author Charles Perrault, whose fairy tale was first published in 1697.[2][7] It has since been the basis of and inspiration behind innumerable operas, ballet, plays and films.[7] The first film version was seven-minutes long, directed by George Méliès in France in 1899.[8] The first Hollywood adaptation was Paramount Pictures' 1914 silent film, starring Mary Pickford in the title role.[9] Disney's classic animated version of Cinderella came out in 1950. It was a huge box office success,[10] and in 2008 was named the ninth-greatest animated film of all time by the American Film Institute.[11] Other recent films based on the Cinderella concept over the years include Ever After (1998) and A Cinderella Story (2004).[12]

Development

In May 2010, following the box office success of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, which was the second-highest grossing film of 2010 and earned over $1 billion at the box office worldwide,[13] Walt Disney Pictures began developing a new film adaptation of Cinderella, making a deal on a live action reimagining based on a script by Aline Brosh McKenna and produced by Simon Kinberg.[12] In August 2011, Mark Romanek was brought on to direct.[14] On February 29, 2012, it was announced that Chris Weitz would be brought in to revise McKenna's script.[15][16] In January 2013, Romanek left the project due to creative differences, as he was developing a version that was darker than Disney wanted.[17] Later that month, Disney negotiated with Kenneth Branagh to take over as director.[9][18]

Casting

Cate Blanchett was the first actor to sign on, when it was announced in November 2012 that she would be playing Lady Tremaine.[19] In March 2013, Emma Watson was in talks to portray Cinderella, but a deal could not be worked out.[20][21] Gabriella Wilde, Saoirse Ronan, Alicia Vikander, Bella Heathcote and Margot Robbie were also considered for the part, but deals could not be worked out due to scheduling and other conflicts.[21][22]

On April 30, 2013, Lily James was added to the cast as the title character.[6][7] A week later, Richard Madden was cast as the Prince.[23] In June 2013, it was reported that Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera joined the film as the mean stepsisters, Anastasia and Drisella.[24][25] Later that month, Helena Bonham Carter was cast as the Fairy Godmother.[4] In July 2013, Stellan Skarsgård began discussions to play the Grand Duke, and his involvement in the film was confirmed soon after.[2] In August 2013, Hayley Atwell joined the cast to play Cinderella's mother.[26] On September 23, 2013, it was announced that Derek Jacobi was cast as the King and Nonso Anozie as the Captain, a loyal friend to the Prince.[2]

Filming

Principal photography on Cinderella began on September 23, 2013.[2] Production occurred at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, where Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Maleficent were also filmed,[27] and throughout England at locations including Blenheim Palace, Windsor Castle, Old Royal Naval College and Black Park.[18]

Post-production

Post-production began in December 2013, and was completed in August 2014.[18] The finished film was rated PG by the MPAA.[28]

Music

On June 7, 2013 news confirmed that composer Patrick Doyle would score the film, with the music having an emphasis on romance.[29][30] Doyle has previously scored several Branagh films, including Hamlet and Thor.[31]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released on March 13, 2015.[1]

Trailers

The first official presentation of the movie occurred at Disney's two-day D23 Expo in August 2013.[32][33] The film was previewed at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Nevada, in March 2014, with a teaser showing Cinderella hearing about her father's death, meeting the prince while riding through the forest, her mother's ball gown being torn apart by her step-family, and a comedic bit where the Fairy Godmother transforms a pumpkin into a carriage.[34][35]

The first official trailer debuted on May 15, 2014. In the minute-long teaser, which doesn't include any footage from the film, a sparkling glass slipper is slowly revealed over a black background.[36][37] The second official trailer, this one containing footage from the film, will debut on Good Morning America on November 19, 2014, with a 15-second trailer preview released two days prior.[38][39]

Television

In October 2014, a licensing agreement between Disney and Turner Broadcasting was announced, in which Cinderella would premiere across Turner's cable network portfolio (including TBS and TNT) around the spring of 2017.[40]
