Lalisa Manoban (Hangul: 리사; born March 27, 1997) better known as Lisa is a Thai dancer, rapper, singer, and model. She is the main dancer, lead rapper, vocalist, and the youngest member of South Korean quartet Blackpink who debuted in 2016, under YG Entertainment.[1] In 2018, she was named as Asia’s most beautiful by the veteran British film critic TC Candler.[2]

Manoban has been dubbed as the ‘golden girl’ of K-pop world who can flawlessly rap, dance, and sing, and speaks fluent Thai, Korean, English, and Japanese.[3] With over 17 million followers on instagram, Lisa is the most followed K-pop artist and celebrity from Thailand and South Korea.[4]

Early life

Lisa Manoban was born Pranpriya Manoban on March 27, 1997, in Bangkok, Thailand. Her name was later changed to Lalisa, meaning ‘the one who is praised’, on the advice of a fortune teller in order to bring in prosperity. She also picked up the nicknames Lalice, Lili, and Pokpak. Lisa was also named Thailand’s Princess. She is an only child, her mother is Thai and her stepfather is a renowned Swiss Chef in Thailand. Lisa came from a well-off family as her parents own a culinary school.[5]

She attended Praphamontree II School in Thailand. Lisa started dancing when she was 8 years old and began her vocal training in her middle school. Her genre is Pop and RnB. At a young age, she participated in a Thai dance troupe Wee Za Cool alongside with her childhood friend Got 7’s Bambam.[6]

YG Audition

2010: YG Entertainment Audition in Thailand

In 2010 audition of YG Entertainment held in Bangkok, Lisa was the only one chosen to become a trainee out of 4,000 dreamers. The multitalented Lisa signed her contract in 2011 to become an official trainee and relocate to South Korea at the age of 14. Because of her tender age, at first, Lisa’s parents don’t approve of her moving and living alone in South Korea but later supported her decision as she explains it very well that it’s her dream to become an idol. Lisa is the first non-Korean YG Entertainment artist. [7]

Pre-debut

2011-2016: Idol training and Modeling

Multilingual Lisa trained for more than five years before she formally joined Blackpink. She studied singing, dancing, and rapping, and took monthly test designed to identify their strengths; “Lisa would always get A’s for everything,” said Jennie her bandmate, in their recent interview with Billboard.[8]

Her modeling career began in 2014 when she models for YG clothing brand Nonagon, the latter has been modelled by other YG artist such as CL of 2NE1 and Taeyang of Bigbang. [9] Her model-like body and badass facial expression fit quite really well with the theme of the clothing brand. Lisa and her male counterpart Bobby are the official face of Nonagon. [10] [11]

Blackpink

2016-2018: Debut and global stardom

Her international popularity began when she debuted as one of four members of Blackpink in August 2016. [12] She established herself as the main dancer, lead rapper, and vocalist of the group. [13] Her girl group topped Billboard World Digital Song chart with their hit single ‘Boombayah’, which set the record as the most-viewed debut music video by a Korean act. [14]

In 2018, they release a comeback single ‘Ddu-du Ddu-du’ making their first Billboard Hot 100 entry peaking at number 55. Their album Square Up also peaked at number 40 in the Billboard 200. Lisa’s notable rap in ‘Playing With Fire’, ‘As If It Is Your Last’, and the all-time most-viewed Kpop music video ‘Ddu-ddu Ddu-du’ showcase her powerful voice and charismatic moves in their live performances.[15]

In the same year, Lisa became the muse of Celine, a French ready-to-wear and leather luxury brand. [16] The Parisian luxury fashion house has gifted Lisa a black leather carryall with a hanging luggage tagged emblazoned with her initials “L.M.”, she was the third celebrity to be given the same luxury bag after high-profile celebrities: Lady Gaga and Angelina Jolie. [17]

Back in September, Lisa proved her global influence when she attended Michael Kors Spring 2019 Fashion Show at the New York Fashion Week. [18] She sat in front row seat alongside with Princess Mafalda Cecilia of Bulgaria.[19] [20] Lisa trended in 25 countries via ‘LisaxMichaelKors’ on twitter when she appeared in the runway show held at Pier 17.[21] [22]

Thailand-raised K-Pop superstar bags her first ever solo endorsement deal in March. [23] She becomes the new brand presenter for AIS, the largest GSM mobile phone operator with over 40% market share in Thailand. At 22, she became the highest paid presenter with an estimated talent fee of 450K to 600K USD.[24]

She is indeed a global phenomenon when she became the most followed K-pop artist despite of not being Korean,[25] with over 17 million followers on instagram. Her popularity travels across US when some of hollywood artist followed her on instagram including Dj Snake, Tyga, and Kehlani.[26]

As for her band, Blackpink became the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella in the music festival’s 20 year history.[27] On April 5, Lisa, Jennie, Rosé, and Jisoo released their much anticipated album ‘Kill This Love’,[28] the title track of their album ‘Kill This Love’ reached number one on US itunes sales chart.[29] The Seoul-based act started touring in North America, Europe, and Australia.[30]

YG Entertainment also revealed that Lisa will have a solo debut later this year as part of their 2019 plans for the quartet.[31]

Popularity

K-Pop’s New Dancing Queen

Barely 22, the Thai superstar has been all over the news and social media when she debuted as a member of four-piece girl group Blackpink back in 2016. [32] She became widely popular by her dancing skills and her ability to attract non-Kpop fans all over Asia to United States and Europe. With her slick dance moves in Blackpink’s first ever dance practice video, Lisa shook everyone and people started choosing who to stan among the ladies, and all eyes were definitely landed on her. [33] She’s got a killer hype moves, her ability to memorize a choreography in an instant, she can totally slay your existence just by watching her charismatic dance moves. Rosé describes Lisa as the ‘dancing machine’ of the group.

Social Media Fame

As a proof of her global popularity, Lisa opened her instagram in July 2018, breaking records as she became the fastest Thai and K-Entertainment celebrity to hit 10 million mark in November, just five months after opening her account to the public, [34] her photo with adidas campaign also became the most liked photo in South Korea beating the A-list’s couple Song-Song, which solidify her status as the queen of social media.[35] [36] Lisa also went viral when she dances to Jason Derullo’s 2017 hit single ‘Swalla’ in her solo performance at Blackpink’s In Your Area World Tour: Bangkok last January.[37]
Lisa also made it to the ’TOP 9 WORLD FAMOUS CELEBRITIES’ on Instagram of 2018 with 309m likes, the only Asian celebrity to be included on the list.[38]

Just recently on the day of her birthday, Lisa broke her second social media records by topping the worldwide trending charts as she reached one million mentions. A first in history for a female idol to do so. Her fans all over the world posted photos and endearing messages via ‘AceLalisaDay’ on twitter.[39]

Fashion Icon

Lisa was also tagged as ‘Sold Out Queen’ by her fans when every piece of clothing, shoes, bags, even a magazine she appeared in sold out within hours, if not minutes.[40] She has the ability to put ‘sold out’ sign instantly in the store. To name a few, her Falcon shoes from Adidas sold out instantly in Thailand, Philippines, and Australia.[41] Same with her Balenciaga Bowling bag where she poses for a paparazzi shot in the airport.[42] Her Nylon Japan cover ‘add to cart’ button is unavailable just hours after release.[43]

Personal life

Lisa officially launched her own Youtube channel called LiLiFilm Official back in October 2018.[44]
In her recent interview with Dazed Korea last February, Lisa talks about her passion for Photography. She’s currently interested to taking photos with her newly-owned film camera, a 60th Anniversary Contax T2 model. [45]
