    Hi

Hi All Wikipedia create a School's Facebook page automatically but the school have a own Facebook page I want to wikipedia connect the real Facebook page with the school's Wikipedia page and also the location of the school's distance is only 1km but in wikipedia it shows 2km.I want to please connect the real Facebook page with the school Wikipedia page.please reply ,so I will give you the Facebook page links.Thanks. Hope this is understandable . Kritish Mohapatra (talk) 11:30, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kritish Mohapatra. Wikipedia has nothing whatever to do with Facebook. Facebook, like anybody else, is allowed to reuse material from Wikipedia as long as it complies with the licence conditions. Wikipedia has no control over how Facebook uses its information. If you want somethign changed in Facebook, you will need to take that up with Facebooik.
Wikipedia articles do not normally link to social media sites: since Secondary Board High School has a link to the school's blog, there is no reason to link to any other social media accounts. I see no mention of "2km" in the article.
Please note that if you are connected with the school (as you appear to be) you should not be editing the article, but only making edit requests: see conflict of interest. Please note also that unless some independent reliably published sources about the school are added to the article, it is quite likely to get deleted for being not notable. --ColinFine (talk) 15:08, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Respected Sir,

I have published my page but its not visible by searching in google. why is it so?

Thanks, Shashini Puvi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shashini Puvi (talkcontribs) 13:23, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shashini Puvi, Userpages never appear on google. Wikipedia is not for self promotion, and you shouldn't write about yourself. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 13:26, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

when i create page of myself you said it cannot be used for self promotion then the below memtioned is also self promotion URL please justify: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rameshbabu_Praggnanandhaa — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shashini Puvi (talkcontribs) 13:54, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

May I know what you specifically classify as (self-)promotion on that article. Victor Schmidt (talk) 14:29, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Shashini Puvi, I don't see any self promotion there. Among other things, they didn't even write it. You wrote your own page, which is what self promotion is. —moonythedwarf (Braden N.) 14:37, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Shashini Puvi: your user page is a place to tell other editors about yourself as a wikipedia editor. See WP:USERPAGE. It is not a place to tell the general readership about your accomplishments in the outside world, except as they relate to you ability and interest in editing Wikipedia to make it a better encyclopedia. If you are notable as we define the term (WP:N), someone (not you) may choose to write an encyclopedia article about you. That will not be your user page. -Arch dude (talk) 18:32, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to add userboxes on talk page

Dear Help Desk, I am currently confused on how to add a user box to my talk page and don't understand, please explain this to me in the simplest way possible. --Takumi (talk) 13:55, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Staines Staines: In general, you include a userbox by typing its name in curly brackets. For example, if I were to include Template:User wikipedia on my Userpage, I type
    This user is a Wikipedian.
. Note that I have added a demo parameter to prevent categorisation on the Help desk. Victor Schmidt (talk) 14:28, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There is also information at Template:Userbox, though possibly not in the simplest terms. In general, user boxes can get very complicated, but if you have specific questions it may be easier to assist you. ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 14:34, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The easiest way in my opinion is find a page where that user box is used. See how it's edited in and just copy/paste it. --Dutchy45 (talk) 17:20, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Misspelled name of a place

Hi, I did a quick search on your page of the place where I was born and I would like to bring to your attention that the name of the place I was born and raised is written wrong. The place is written and can be found as Valea Rumâneștior! Corect is Valea Româneștilor. Wikipedians who are indefinitely blocked for advertising

The talk pages of editors in the Category:Wikipedians who are indefinitely blocked for advertising have a notice on their talk page that includes the words "potentially penalized by search engines". Those words include a dead external link. I haven't been able to figure out how to fix this.--Shantavira|feed me 10:49, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    I do not see such words. Ruslik_Zero 13:02, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The notices on those user talk pages appear to be substs of {{Uw-spam4}} which once had this:
potentially being [http://www.forbes.com/technology/2007/10/18/wikipedia-pr-spencer-tech-internet-cx_ag_1018techwikipedia.html penalized] by search engines
There appears to be an archive of that url at archive.org here. The external link was removed at this edit.
Because these editors are indeffed, there isn't much reason to repair the dead link.

Sorry for any confusion. Language of the references/sources

    Hello,

I've seen countless times here in English Wikipedia where, when adding references/sources to sentences or claims, there is a citation field (correct me if this is the wrong term :D) used for informing readers what language the reference/source uses (lang=en / language=id). I understand that it is useful when citing non-English sources since this is an English Wikipedia after all, but is this really necessary or required when citing English sources? I notice that when citing an English source using the "lang=en", it displays nothing in the ref tool-tip (after hovering your mouse to the ref number), unless it is a language other than English. Does deleting them (the lang=en thing) violate any rules?

    Thank you. AdaCiccone (talk) 13:45, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Don't delete |language=en or |language=English (or the alias |lang=) just because you think it unnecessary. Very commonly, cs1|2 templates are copied from en.wiki to other-language Wikipedias where knowing that the source is an English source is important. If you want to do something that benefits those editors who copy cs1|2 templates to other-language wikis, convert the language name to the appropriate code so that the cs1|2 template renders the language name in the local language (translation by a human not required). A list of language names know to cs1|2 and their associated codes is at Template:Citation Style documentation/language/doc.

My article has got a speedy deletion tag

So what happened was is that one section of my article got this copyright tag on it and it was blanked out (I'm quite new to Wikipedia so I don't know what you call it), then a few days later it got a speedy deletion tag because of the same section of the article. Before the speedy deletion tag was placed, I re-wrote the problematic section where it redirected me on WP:CP (recent listings section in the listings of possible copyright problems section). Now I need to paraphrase it again but I can't remove the tag or edit it in source editing.--Limorina (talk) 16:24, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Limorina: for more general help on this issue, you may wish to read Wikipedia:What to do if your article gets tagged for speedy deletion and Wikipedia:Why was the page I created deleted? For this issue of copyright: this is something that Wikipedia takes very seriously, so it is important to be careful when working with copyrighted material. You may wish to read Wikipedia:FAQ/Copyright, Wikipedia:Text Copyright Violations 101, and Wikipedia:Copyright violations. For more help for new editors on Wikipedia, you might want to read Help:Getting started, and Help:Introduction. Also, in the future when writing new articles, you may wish to make a draft first: have a look at Help:Your first article and Wikipedia:Article wizard, which may be of interest to you. @Limorina:You took the correct action when you contested the speedy deletion. For good measure, I also contested it after investigation. The admin who checks the speedy deletions will read our notes and will remove the speedy note from the article. -Arch dude (talk) 17:20, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I tried using the CSS backdrop-filter: blur(3px); on my user page but found out that the style attribute value is replaced with /* insecure input */. Making statements which are backed up only by text extracted from a resource which is not freely available

I'm tweaking page ISO 4217. The text of this ISO standard is not freely available, but the data tables are available on the Web site of the ISO 4217 Maintenance Agency. Wikipedia section ISO 4217#Minor units of currency describes a particular field of these tables, called "Minor unit". It currently includes an extract from the text of the standard, though there is no way (obvious to me) of proving that it really is an extract from the text of the standard. Is that OK?

I'd like to improve the explanation provided in this section and to move the extract from the standard to somewhere lower down the page, where it can be read by readers who are sufficiently motivated to do so, while not getting in the way of the average reader. Is there some convention for doing this?

Finally, the extract from the standard mentions, and explains, four values of the "Minor unit" field, but does not mention two other values which are used in the data tables. Am I allowed to explain what those other values mean, without having proof that this is what they mean? Specifically, the extract mentions the values "0", "1", "2" and "3". The data tables also contain the values "4" and "N.A.". Am I allowed to extrapolate the meaning of "4" from the documented meanings of "1" through "3"? And am I allowed to write that "N.A." stands for "Not Applicable"?

    Thanks Misha Wolf (talk) 19:23, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think the best way to explain this, is that information behind a paywall, is just as valid as those freely available (but probably should be tagged as such.) Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:26, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I see. Is there a standard form of words editors use to indicate that a cited resource is only accessible if purchased? And what about the questions in my second and third paragraphs? Thanks Misha Wolf (talk) 19:39, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Misha Wolf, you may be able to use {{subscription required}} or {{closed access}} to denote that it is not freely available. It usually follows (in the ref tags) right after the citation. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:03, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Misha Wolf: Most older physical books are only available "if purchased" or if you have access to a library. Similarly, ISO standards must be purchased unless you have access to an organization that has purchased them, so no real difference. I know of no standard wording similar to "paywall", but "paywall" is only relevant if you supply a URL. Go ahead and use "paywall" if you supply a URL, and use nothing if you do not. Technically, you should not extrapolate to "4" based on the excerpt (N.A. is surely reasonable though). Instead, ask at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange to see if someone with access to the ISO standard can look it up for you. -Arch dude (talk) 20:00, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, all. I'll follow your (plural) helpful advice. In particular, I've logged a request for (an extract from) the latest version of ISO 4217 at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request#ISO 4217:2015. Misha Wolf (talk) 22:47, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to exclude the Lua subpages from search of RD archives?

I occassionally like to search through the Reference Desk archives using the search box at Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives. Actually, this doesn't work. Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Lua/Miscellaneous/January_2013 and other Lua subpages in the archive are not in any categories, from what I see. RudolfRed (talk) 02:53, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've had categories on my brain so perhaps that explains my answer... or the age is in and the wit is out ...
If the lua sub page names have the form Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Lua/... then doesn't -prefix:Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Lua/ at the right end of the search string do the job?

Hi, it would be nice to have one or more resolutions intermediate between 755 × 1,024 pixels and 10,485 × 14,223 pixels, the latter being nearly 200 times the size of the former and hardly feasible to download or view. Also, a note on the above page says "The original file has a large number of pixels and when opened at full resolution, may either not load properly or cause your browser to freeze. These problems can be avoided by use of the ZoomViewer." However, when I try to use the "ZoomViewer" I get an error "No response from server iipsrv.fcgi". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A00:23C8:7B08:6A00:D9C5:AB0:19EC:73D5 (talk) 02:00, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'll note that this morning, I was able to get it to generate a 2,097 × 2,845 pic at https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e2/Khalili_Collections_A_Composite_Imaginary_View_of_Japan.jpg/2097px-Khalili_Collections_A_Composite_Imaginary_View_of_Japan.jpg, but trying to render it here (at enwiki) with [[File:Khalili Collections A Composite Imaginary View of Japan.jpg|thumb|2097px]] still doesn't work (though this may be related to the fact that I'm getting a 429 error (too many requests) on Commons now while playing with it instead of the 500 error I got earlier at the same resolution (3495px). I'll update here with the phab ticket when I get to reporting it. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 18:06, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

List of animals who kill the most humans each year wikipage

Someone put that the numbers exclude other causes of death, such as “abortions.” This is topic that becomes convoluted and messy. When does a fertilized egg become considered a living human, which can then be considered a life capable of killing. You see how messy it gets? Just remove that part. Restart Process

Several years ago I deleted (or tried to delete) my "WP membership" then later attempted to resume the same. "Restart Process" was displayed (it' been a while now, it's still there) - I've no recollection of anything beyond what is now displayed). I never succeeded in restarting the same id. Any suggestions? Thanks 67.160.197.209 (talk) 07:38, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@67.160.197.209: I yust want to make sure I understand you correctly:
    • You dont remember your username you used
    • you dont remember the email adress you used, or it has subsequentely changed or
    • you havent set an email adress at that time
If you can answer two of the three questions with "yes", I am afraid that you can only create a new account and use that onwards.

    Main page talk page semi-protection

I know the main page itself has been protected since essentially forever. However, the talk page for the main page, including errors to DYK etc, was open to all edits until fairly recently. How can I find out when and why it was placed under semi-protection? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.11.165.101 (talk) 13:16, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It was protected on October 1 due to extensive vandalism. It's only protected from IP users and non-autoconfirmed users; you are welcome to create an account which will allow you to post there(once autoconfirmed). 331dot (talk) 13:28, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Changing the display title

Hello, Please change the display tile from: User:Ziv Aviram to Ziv Aviram

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ziv Aviram (talkcontribs) 14:54, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User:Ziv Aviram is your user page. It is intended for you to write about yourself regarding what you are doing to help improve Wikipedia. Instead, you have used it for a promotional and unreferenced autobiography, which is certainly not acceptable as a Wikipedia article. Maproom (talk) 15:05, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ziv Aviram: See WP:USERPAGE. As Maproom said, it should be used to tell other editors about how you can help improve Wikipedia. By contrast, an article about you would tell the world about yourself as a notable person. You are not Unless you are notable by our definition (WP:N), so an article cannot be added. If you become are notable then someone (not you, see WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY) will eventually add it, written in an objective manner and in an encyclopedic tone, with references to reliable sources. -Arch dude (talk) 15:18, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ziv Aviram: You added a picture to commons, claiming it as your own work, but you then credited it on your user page to someone else. the copyright of that picture belonge to the photographer, not you, so you cannot claim it as your own work. I will nominate it fro deletion. Please ask the photographer to upload it, or provide evidence that you own the copyright if you re-add it. We treat intellectual property issues very seriously. I assume that a person with your background is very well informed about intellectual property issues. -Arch dude (talk) 16:32, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Ziv Aviram: Even if you had moved your user page to article space, it would have been speedily deleted for being promotional and for copying copyrighted content from other sources. Although the promotional language was appropriate at the source websites, it has no place in an encyclopedia like Wikipedia. —teb728 t c 05:00, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Magnum PI (reboot 2018)

On Hawaii Five-O reboot (2010) and MacGyver reboot (2016) on the far right side of the page scroll down and you see season 1, if you click for Season 2 you can see a new screen with just that season info there. Same is the case for MacGyver. However for Magnum PI after season one ended and season 2 started you continued season 2 on the same page grouping everything together. So cast names have increased because 2 seasons as does the references at the end. I generally print out each season and keep for my files but I am unable to do this for this show. Is it possible you can reformat this show so that it appears like the other two? I tried cutting and pasting the info for the season I wanted but that did not work. Please accommodate me by making this simple change. I would appreciate your reply. Thank you and BE SAFE. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2000:B8C1:F400:BD86:F53E:CD31:BA92 (talk) 19:27, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Question on piping

I have asked before at the Help Desk about a technique called piping, and have done experiments on my sandbox to see whether this would get me to the article on Martin Luther. I would like to know whether it is possible to use a similar technique to go to specific sections of the article on Martin Luther - for example, Section 8, the section on Luther's translation of the Bible. Many thanks in advance for your help. Vorbee (talk) 19:45, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vorbee: [[Martin_Luther#Translation_of_the_Bible| ML Bible]] produces ML Bible and should do what you want. RudolfRed (talk) 19:56, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Thank yoi User: RudolfRed. I see you see that in what you typed you put the symbol to make music notes sharp. I do no appear to have this on my computer keyboard - the computer I am using is a Dell laptop. Is there another computer icon that I could type to serve the same function? Many thanks, Vorbee (talk) 21:33, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you are on Windows, you can use the Character map program to insert the #. I'd guess that other OS have something similar. RudolfRed (talk) 21:52, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vorbee: Please note that the character is a Number sign, not a musical sharp or any of the other similar-shaped symbols, so when you pick it from a symbol list, make sure your get the correct one. You might wish to just copy the symbol from this help desk post and paste is onto your user page for future use. It is also available in the "special characters" tab of the Wikipedia text editor window. -Arch dude (talk) 22:58, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Vorbee. Does your keyboard not match any of the illustrations in the article QWERTY? Most of them have a # symbol somewhere - most often shift-3, but sometimes elsewhere. Alternatively, you can simply copy and paste the # character from here, or from any other article where it occurs, such as Number sign. --ColinFine (talk) 22:53, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vorbee: Does this mean you're not using the standard US keyboard layout? If ⇧ Shift+3 doesn't produce #, you can always insert it as a symbol (CharInsert should have it). If you're using the visual editor (or new wikitext mode), you can also find it by clicking on Ω in the editor's toolbar and navigating to the "Symbols" section (first row). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • [[Special:Contributions/Tenryuu|
    • Thank you for your kind and helpful comments. I have found where the sharp sign is on my keyboard - it is just below the tilde (~) sign.

Can I make my own articles and how

    Please, see Wikipedia:My first article. Ruslik_Zero 20:09, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Samyan musa: Can you? Yes. Should you? Probably not. As a newbie, creating an article from scratch can be quite difficult, technically. That aside, and more importantly, there are criteria (primarily our definition of notability) for an article to exist are somewhat strict, requiring significant coverage of the topic in independent, reliable sources. What did you want to write about? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 20:54, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In principle, you can create Wikipedia articles. In practice, as a new user, you are likely to find it very difficult and frustrating. And they will be Wikipedia's article, not "your own". Maproom (talk) 23:03, 1 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Can't reset my password

I've been a Wikipedia editor for five years or so, and the system has now lost contact with me and will not let me login. I have repeatedly tried to request a password reset link, the system says I will be emailed the link ... and nothing happens.

The email I am looking for is not in my email Trash or Spam folder. It just never came. I am certain that I have entered a case-correct username, spelled correctly, and a correct gmail.com email address, the one I have used for years with Wikipedia.

Can anyone suggest a way I can get direct help from Wikipedia to resolve this problem? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 162.72.181.187 (talk) 01:56, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Updating information in a side panel

I am Mary-Anne Cosgrove, the former president of the Council of Australian Humanist Societies, and am now Acting Chair of Humanists Australia, a new organisation.

My name appears in the side panel of the entry for CAHS. How can I get this changed to the new president, Murray Love?

Also is it appropriate for me to add a page for Humanists Australia? I had the impression you are not supposed to edit pages you have a close relationship with? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 161.8.241.63 (talk) 07:10, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP editor! You would be strongly discouraged from editing an article directly if you have a conflict of interest. In such cases, it's standard to propose changes on the article's talk page through edit requests. If you are creating a new article from scratch it's strongly recommended that you go through Articles for Creation. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 08:08, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Nancy Grace

olease remove all referance apart from Nancy grCE IS A SCARE MONGER ONLY IN NEWD FOR THE MONEY.

SHE REGULARLY COMPINS ABOUT SUSPECTS BEING GRNTED THEIR RIGHTS WHEN NOT CONVICTED, CLAIMING THEY are guity but provides no evidence. when proven wrong she tries to refute proven evidence stating then th suspect proven innocent is still guity.

in the sme situation she would claim the same rights she refuses to give others.

a person making a living by denying legal rights to others no longer has a lace in ou=r world. it is time for her to get a real job and produce facts from her own research and investigation rathr than second hand info. once she does and can prove her claims i will support her %00 not %0 until she does, becuse nti proven she lives of the midery of others.

yes lots of typos, but nancy does not deserve going through spell check

Wikipedia has articles about subjects that receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources, showing how they meet Wikipedia's definition of notability. That includes people who do good things as well as people who do bad things. As long as Nancy Grace is written about in independent reliable sources, she will merit a Wikipedia article. 331dot (talk) 10:46, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Userspace Subpages

I just read about user pages and the userspace. What could user subpages be used for? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TappyTurtle13 (talkcontribs) 14:23, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

TappyTurtle13, user talk subpages are typically used for archives. Actual userpage subpages can be used when there is not enough space. It can also be used for templates, guestbooks, or others. Mr. Heart (talk) 14:25, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Weird lines on a timeline chart

Hi, can someone with more knowledge than me take a look at the timeline chart for Duran Duran members here. There are some weird lines on it and I can't see how to remove them. Thanks, Turner Street (talk) 14:51, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Turner Street, it looks fine, could you please tell me what lines specifically that should be removed? Mr. Heart (talk) 14:52, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Turner Street: Everything seems to be in order on my end. I'll link to what I see here. Do you still see "weird lines"? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:18, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I presume he's talking about those angle black and grey bars that seem to emerge from an out-of-frame "vanishing point" and run across the chart. They seem to tell us precisely nothing, and they obscure almost to unreadable several names in the far left column of the chart. Uporządnicki (talk) 15:23, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
AzseicsoK, I am not seeing this. It looks fine, if you are talking about the horizontal bars, it is used to find which person they are talking about. If you are talking about the vertical bars, they show when the studio and live albums were released. Mr. Heart (talk) 15:28, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
AzseicsoK, the horizontal alternating lines? I'm under the impression that they're used to visually separate the artists from one another. That parameter is controlled by BackgroundColors = bars:bars in the wikitext. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 15:30, 2 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
