The five rivers, now divided between India and Pakistan, merge to form the Panjnad, which joins the Indus. Sometimes, in English, there can be a definite article before the name i.e. the Punjab. The name is also sometimes spelled as Panjab or Panjaab or Punjaab. The name Punjab was given to the region by Turkic Muslim conquerors and popularised during the reign of the Islamic Mughal Empire in the 17th century CE respectively. Chinese historian Faxian mentioned it as Pololo. Arab historians mentioned it as Blore. The people of this region have historically been referred to as Balawars (or “The Highlanders”), which is said to have come from the term Bala, which means High, a reference to the high-altitudes prevalent in this area. An alternative theory links the name to a mythic ancient King called Bolor Shah, who had first united the region and from whom local rulers in turn often claimed descent. Yet a third theory was proposed by the National Institute of Historical and Cultural Research of Pakistan that "the name is most probably derived from the title Patola, the Buddhist royal dynasty which was powerful in the region from the 8th centuries AD." Historically, the Baltistan region was called "Great Bolor" and Dardistan and parts of Brooshal (e.g. Gilgit Valley) were called "Little Bolor." Great Boloristan is known to have sent ambassadors to the Chinese court. He called Bengal ‘Bang-e-Islam’ (call to prayer of Islam) and included all of Bengal, West Bengal too. Bengal was a Muslim-majority province. Although he had punned on the word. To Common Pakistanis it was called “Oriental Pakistan” or alternatively Islamically as “Bangalistan”. The word Mashriqi implies as Eastern. Kazim, in his book of reviews, Kal ki Baat (Readings Lahore, 2010), tells us that Aurangzeb’s minister Abul Fazl had opined that Bangla was actually Bangal and that ‘al’ in it meant enclosure. Today, ‘aal’ is taken to mean home, from a sense of ‘outer wall making an enclosure’, in which to extent what is exactly present-day Bangla-Desh is today respectively.

Ladakh has been described as 'The Mysterious Land of the Mystic Lamas', 'The Broken Moonland', or 'The Last Shangri-La' for its unique landscape and exquisite culture. One sees no horizon here but only mountain peaks soaring up to 5 to 6 km high, the River Indus, the “National River of Pakistan” runs through this Indus Valley Region of Pakistan (IVR), Occupied by India, since 1947. In the prehistoric period Ladakh formed a Great Lake perhaps the last remnants of the Ancient Tethys Sea, when India was a full continent. Even at present the region has some of the largest and most beautiful fresh water lakes, Pangong and the Tsomoriri lakes. It is a repository of indigenous myriad cultural and religious influences from Tibet, Indian subcontinent and Turanian Central Asia respectively. The region was previously known as Maryul.
