Template:The X Factor UK The second UK series of The X Factor ran from 20 August to 17 December 2005.[1]. All three judges — Simon Cowell, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh — returned for the series, quashing rumours that Osbourne and Walsh might not return for financial reasons. Kate Thornton also returned as host. 75,000 people auditioned for the second series, which saw Shayne Ward declared winner.

Louis Walsh had the casting vote, and chose to eliminate Maria. Sharon accused him of being part of the "Irish Mafia" (since both he and the Conway Sisters are Irish). There is also talk that Simon Cowell wishes he had eliminated the Conway Sisters as he felt they wouldn't have a chance to win and that Maria had more talent. It has also been stated that he feels Maria's is the first elimination that the public will disagree with.

  • Louis: The Conway Sisters
  • Simon: Nicholas
  • Sharon: Nicholas

"It's Chico Time" was the first song to be written and composed especially for the show, by Chico himself. It was released as a single in 2006 and got to number 1 in the UK Singles Chart.

With Louis and Simon both, as expected, supporting their own acts, the casting vote fell to Sharon. After a lengthy pause Sharon decided to eliminate Nicholas. Sharon declined to give a reason for her decision, but earlier in the show she had commented (as had Simon) that Nicholas' singing was out of tune.

Following the show, rumours circulated that judge Louis Walsh had quit after being humiliated by fellow judges Sharon Osbourne and Simon Cowell. Louis told The Sun on November 23 2005, "I’ve been totally humiliated and undermined by both of them. This has caused me nothing but stress. The final straw was Sharon with the water and being booed by the audience and then Simon Cowell saying I was an idiot and stupid... I’ve had enough. I’m going back to Dublin. I’m not putting up with it any more." Judge and creator of the show Simon Cowell apparently "begged" Louis to come back.

In the event Louis did turn up for the next show; it was stated that he had indeed quit midweek but had been persuaded to return. He explained how he had felt he could not take the pressure any more, and denied that the episode was a publicity stunt.

26 November 2005

Order Artist Song (original artists) Results
1 Chico "Billie Jean" - (Michael Jackson) Bottom two
2 The Conway Sisters "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" (Starship) Eliminated
3 Andy "I Have Nothing" (Whitney Houston)
4 Shayne "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" (The Darkness)
5 Brenda "I Will Always Love You" (Dolly Parton)
6 Journey South "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (U2)
Judges' votes to eliminate
  • Sharon: The Conway Sisters
  • Simon: The Conway Sisters
  • Louis didn't need to vote as there was a majority.

For the first time in the series so far, a judge made an unforced decision to eliminate one of their own acts: Simon Cowell voted to send home The Conway Sisters rather than Sharon's Chico. Sharon had already supported her own act and Louis did not get the opportunity to vote. Simon said that both acts deserved to be in the bottom two, but felt Chico had an entertainment value. (On November 5, both the bottom two acts were Louis', leaving him no choice but to send one of them home).

3 December 2005

Order Artist First song (original artists) Second song (original artist) Results
1 Journey South "Bad Day" (Daniel Powter) "Candle in the Wind" (Elton John)
2 Chico "I Got You (I Feel Good)" (James Brown) "Time Warp" (The Rocky Horror Picture Show) Eliminated
3 Brenda "I'm Outta Love" (Anastacia) "I'll Never Love This Way Again" (Dionne Warwick)
4 Shayne "Take Your Mama" (Scissor Sisters) "Careless Whisper" (George Michael)
5 Andy "Easy Lover" (Phil Collins) "When I Fall in Love" (Nat King Cole)

For the first time in the series, it was the viewers' votes alone that decided who left the competition. The results were, as usual, announced in no particular order, and at one stage in the voting period there was only 1% between the acts with the lowest number of votes. Chico ended up being eliminated, and performed "Time Warp" again as his final performance.

10 December 2005: Semi Final

Order Artist First song (original artists) Second song (original artist) Results
1 Andy "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" (Bryan Adams) "Lately" (Stevie Wonder)
2 Journey South "You're in My Heart (The Final Acclaim)" (Rod Stewart) "Let It Be" (The Beatles)
3 Brenda "Respect" (Otis Redding) "Without You" (Badfinger) Eliminated
4 Shayne "If Tomorrow Never Comes" (Garth Brooks) "Unchained Melody" (Righteous Brothers)

Brenda was eliminated in the closest vote of Series 2 with less than 1% between her and the act who came in 3rd place.[citation needed]

17 December 2005: Final

Order Artist First song (original artists) Second: Christmas song (original artists) Third Song (original artists) Fourth Song (new single) Placings
1 Journey South "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (Elton John) "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" (John Lennon and Yoko Ono) "Let It Be" (The Beatles) (already eliminated) 3rd
2 Andy "When a Man Loves a Woman" (Percy Sledge) "O Holy Night" (Traditional) "Me and Mrs. Jones" (Billy Paul) "That's My Goal" 2nd
3 Shayne "If You're Not the One" (Daniel Bedingfield) "When a Child is Born" (Johnny Mathis) "Over the Rainbow" (Judy Garland) "That's My Goal" 1st

In the final of series 2, each of the three finalists had to sing up to four songs: one of their own choice, a Christmas song, a song they had sung earlier in the finals, and the new song "That's My Goal" — a version of which, recorded by the eventual winner, would be released to vie for the Christmas number one spot. (In the event, Shayne Ward's version did indeed make Christmas number one.)

Some of the more memorable acts that did not make it to the live shows also returned to sing My Way. The show's oldest contestant was among them.

On the back of their performances and popularity in the competition, Shayne Ward (winner), Journey South, Andy Abraham, Chico Slimani, Maria Lawson and The Conway Sisters have landed recording contracts.
