Hello there, I would like to have a bot that archvives old stuff that are on pages on the [Http://skatoony.wikia.com skatoony wiki] And i have made the account already: Rswfanbot Which i am posting on, Would i need to Post on my normal account to Request this or is it ok just to Request bot status on the bot account?

Thanks

Revision as of 10:59, 11 January 2009

This is a page for requesting tasks to be done by bots per the bot policy. This is an appropriate place to put ideas for uncontroversial bot tasks, to get early feedback on ideas for bot tasks (controversial or not), and to seek bot operators for bot tasks. Consensus-building discussions requiring large community input (such as request for comments) should normally be held at WP:VPPROP or other relevant pages (such as a WikiProject's talk page).

You can check the "Commonly Requested Bots" box above to see if a suitable bot already exists for the task you have in mind. If you have a question about a particular bot, contact the bot operator directly via their talk page or the bot's talk page. If a bot is acting improperly, follow the guidance outlined in WP:BOTISSUE. For broader issues and general discussion about bots, see the bot noticeboard.

Before making a request, please see the list of frequently denied bots, either because they are too complicated to program, or do not have consensus from the Wikipedia community. If you are requesting that a template (such as a WikiProject banner) is added to all pages in a particular category, please be careful to check the category tree for any unwanted subcategories. It is best to give a complete list of categories that should be worked through individually, rather than one category to be analyzed recursively (see example difference).

Alternatives to bot requests

Note to bot operators: The BOTREQ template can be used to give common responses, and make it easier to keep track of the task's current status. If you complete a request, note that you did with done, and archive the request after a few days (WP:1CA is useful here).

Please add your bot requests to the bottom of this page.

Cleanup of articles transcluding Infobox Court Case

Hi, Infobox Court Case has been updated as follows:

 • It is no longer necessary to use wikitext markup when specifying the name of an image file for the "image" parameter. Thus, instead of typing "", editors should now type "Image.svg".
 • The infobox now automatically displays an image according to the scheme at , provided the name of the court is correctly stated.

It would be great if a bot could do the following in all articles containing the infobox:

 • remove "" from image file names stated for the "image" parameter; and
 • when one of the court names specified in has been given for the "court" parameter, remove the "image" parameter entirely so that the template can automatically decide what image to display.

Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 19:10, 31 December 2008 (UTC), updated 08:53, 1 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot to run WikiProject contests

Can someone write a bot that can automatically update WikiProject contest pages such as Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Contest? The military history page is currently manually updated. It could read the list of members from the Members page and bump it against articles using the Project template and update the statistics. Such a bot will be really useful in managing the statistics. These contest will motivate people contribute more. The bot can be used across projects similar to how cleanup listings and article alerts are generated. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 07:22, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why would this be a good idea? I can't speak for any of the others, but the military history contest is deliberately set up to require participants to explicitly enter articles, rather than creating statistics for all ~1000 members across ~80,000 articles regardless of whether they want to take part.
On a more practical level, a reasonably simple bot would have no way of determining which articles someone is actually a major contributor to. Awarding points merely on the basis of having edited a particular article—even if the extent of one's contribution was merely adding a single comma—would make the contest meaningless.
This really looks like a solution looking for a problem, rather than vice versa. Kirill 07:33, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
May be the bot could look at who nominated the article for FA, GA or DYK and add points. This is similar to how FA count bots work. Not all members will want to spend time submitting their contributions to this page. Use of a bot will allow all members to participate and get rewarded. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 07:40, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It also ignores the B-Class articles, where reviewer interaction is needed to assess the articles and update the project tags. Regards, Woody (talk) 11:19, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Technically speaking, a bot could do this. It could judge a contribution to be major/minor based on if the 'minor edit' flag was checked, the number of characters\words added, and/or by some other well-defined rules. However, actually automating any given page would also require that community's consensus. A lot of people are pretty suspect on bots, so getting consensus might be hard to do. If/when there is consensus to automate a given page, I could work on some code to do the automation. --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:16, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your offer. Like you mention, we will need to define some rules for each the scoring categories. It will be worth the effort if there is interest for this feature from a few projects and there is consensus to go forward. Let us wait and see. At the India project, we are currently discussing creating some kind of a award system. A bot's help will make it so much easier to manage. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 03:17, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
WikiCup does something similar. It scores participants based on their mainspace edits. This request is looking to do it at a WikiProject level on a monthly basis. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:29, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, CUPBot is rather limited. It is able to count edits, split them up based on namespace, summary, major/minor, and other than that can only get information if a user actually 'claims' each article or edit on a log page, such as User:Garden/WikiCup/Submissions/Zscout370. If you need to be doing parsing of who actually nominated a GA, etc, rather than having a user say "I wrote this", then you'll need something a little more advanced. ST47 (talk) 03:56, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it would be better to have a tool instead of a bot? Unfortunately, statistical information is rather limited to times of edits, summaries, and byte size changes. But a tool maybe useful in other aspects. — Dispenser 06:19, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I would prefer a on-wiki page that can be watchlisted and linked to. The bot must be easy to subscribe by any WikiProject that wants to setup a contest (similar to article alerts). Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 04:02, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Many articles about Christian hymns use the "Cyberhymnal" website as a resource. It's recently moved, however, from http://www.cyberhmnal.org to http://www.hymntime.com/tch. Could we have a bot change the links? I would do it, as I don't think that there are tons of links to the website, but I don't know how to find all the articles that link to the Cyberhymnal. Nyttend (talk) 17:33, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There are 411 links to cyberhymnal.org in total [1]. I'll have DeadLinkBOT work through these once it is approved (which should be soon, the request has been pending for a while.) A quick question: do links like "http://www.cyberhymnal.org/bio/l/a/latham_lb.htm" go to "http://www.hymntime.com/tch/bio/l/a/latham_lb.htm"? Are there any links that do not follow this basic pattern? --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:09, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For your first question: that's the right guy. I don't know about others, but it seems as if the pages have the same pattern, so I believe we could go with it. I don't know of any such links, but I only discovered Cyberhymnal's new location today — I knew that cyberhymnal.org had gone down some weeks ago, but until today I'd not known that it was back up somewhere else. Bot to do what WatchlistBot used to do

I'm seeking a bot that can build project watchlists for WikiProject Louisville and WikiProject Kentucky the same (or similar) way as WatchlistBot used to do, but stopped in August 2007. It would be good if this bot could run as much as once a week, but twice a month would be adequate. Here's an example of a watchlist page that was built for WikiProject Louisville by WatchlistBot. I'm sure this bot would be of interest to the many projects that used WatchlistBot previously but haven't found a new bot to take over the task as of yet. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:28, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

if you dont need it sorted I could probably write something up. Canis Lupus 20:32, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your interest. I don't really need it sorted, as no non-bot user should normally be viewing it or updating it anyway. If it includes all the project's cataloged pages (article and otherwise), plus their talk pages, that would be quite good enough. Please feel free to ask any other questions if you have them. Both mentioned projects have the Watchall subpage, and it would be great to have up-to-date project watches again. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 20:42, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Legobot 8. LegoKontribsTalkM 23:27, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Kind of what I'm looking for, but I need all pages cataloged by a project (not simply articles in a category and subcats), plus their talk pages, generated for the watchlist. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 02:59, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Do you need them sorted by name, namespace, or will a list be enough? LegoKontribsTalkM 06:57, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A numbered list with the pages sorted by name would be fine. It would include all the pages that have the wikiproject banners on their talk pages, including articles and all other types of pages in the scope of the project. And it would include the talk pages for these pages as well. A suggested format for each entry would be: # Louisville, Kentucky (Talk)
What's in each listing now is just the pages without the talk pages, but I need the talk pages as well. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:54, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cabal Online US Bot

Living People

Sorry if this is duplicated, but would it be possible to automatically check for, and remove instances of Category:Living people from those who are, by the rules of the category, presumed dead. Obvious signs that the category was now out-of-date or incorrectly added (it does happen) would include:

 • Infobox death information
 • Foo Bar (1923 - 2007)
 • Being in a category such as 2007 Deaths

Obviously a few checks and balances would be needed (like obvious user mistakes such as putting (1954 - 2009) where 2009 is the current year to mean that they are still alive), but even a one-time purge of the 300000 articles in living people would be useful. Cheers, Jarry1250 (talk) 14:33, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

 • Oh, I just had another idea. Where this had been completed, on the template WPBiography change living to "no" if living was yes. I suppose that's a much less likely scenario however. Jarry1250 (talk) 15:09, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot to choose a random article every week for collaboration

There has been discussion at WT:VG about bringing back our Collaboration of the week. The problem is that there are about four (that I know of) inactive collaboration projects for VG already. The main problem is that in this democratic/Wiki society, everything, even a collaboration, needs to be voted on, which creates too much bureaucracy and people lose interest. My idea, which has gained some support, was to have a bot choose an article every week randomly from the intersections of certain VG assesment categories (Stub, Start, or C, and High or Top). While I do not have a request at this moment, I wanted to know if A} this method of selection and randoization is possible and B) is there a bot owner that would be interested in doing this? It would be one random call and probably two edits a week, so it wouldn't be very taxing. If I know that it is possible and there is a bot owner willing to help then I can start actively trying to get support for the idea. Cheers. ~ JohnnyMrNinja 18:41, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to see a bot like this myself. And it would be nice if it could be set up to run at varying intervals, as projects have varying degrees of activity. For instance, I would subscribe to it from a couple projects I work with and set an interval parameter to "monthly". Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:50, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, if I understand your request correctly this is a very simple task. Is this a correct outline of what it would do?
 1. Pull the list of "High Priority" articles (for example)
 2. Pull the list of articles assessed as "start" (for example)
 3. Find all article that are listed in both
 4. Randomly pick one
 5. Write the name of the picked article to predetermined location
 6. Wait some length of time & start process fresh
Is that correct--ThaddeusB (talk) 20:36, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, except that it would be a list of articles that are Stub OR Start OR C AND High OR Top priority. It would be important that the article is pulled from the complete list, as opposed to one category being chosen, then the intersected category, then the article (if that makes sense). See Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Video game articles by quality statistics. It would be important that Top/Stub not be given the same weight as High/Start, as the first has 1 article and the second 280. But yes, it is a very simple task once it's set up. ~ JohnnyMrNinja 21:12, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do it, unless ThaddeusB wants to do it. Anomie 03:16, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot tagging for WP:FILM

Is it possible to have a bot run through all subcategories of Category:Films by year (excluding Category:The Wizard of Oz (1939 film), Category:Dragnet, Category:Dragnet episodes, Category:Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Category:Sholay, Category:Donnie Darko, Category:Chak De India, Category:Enchanted (film) and Category:Songs from Enchanted) and ensure that all articles have the Film project banner on their talk page, keeping all existing assessments and other parameters where they currently exist?

In addition, can the bot add the appropriate task force parameters to the banner in the following categories:

Bots to identify stubs

If someone can create a bot to put the stub template into articles that don't have much content on, then people could get on with actually adding stuff to those articles! 86.128.244.86 (talk) 20:09, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that being a "stub" is not a measurement of size, or length. Whilst this is normally the case, stubs can be long or short. Additionally, adding stub templates automatically falls into another trap: we already have bots for changing stub to footy-stub of mil-hist-stub or whatever, so does this new bot create stubs or footy-stubs? Jarry1250 (talk) 20:15, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whats a footy stub? I mean this kind of stub: stub Would it be possible to make a bot that can do that? 86.128.244.86 (talk) 20:24, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't make myself very clear, did I? What I meant was, what you've put there is not the best template to use. First, it doesn't provide any functionality, but mainly it's because it's not specific enough. footy-stub, as my chosen example, is one of many sub-categorised stubs. These are much more useful to the community as they can provide a "to-do" list for avid fans of a particular topic. An automated bot would not do much of a service just adding stubs around the place, as far as I can see. That's assuming, of course, that an automated service could accurately judge a stub from a mostly complete but short article. Jarry1250 (talk) 20:29, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know! I don't know how to make bots! That's why I am requesting, not writing the code! But maybe a footy stub bot would be better. 86.128.244.86 (talk) 20:39, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think we have a fair enough "workload" at Category:Stubs and its subcategories without having a bot going around and tagging articles. Could a bot identify prose from templates and categroies? Probably. Would it be able to know the best template to place on an article? Doubt it. Some things we should just let humans do. §hep¡Talk to me! 20:56, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Future films

Would it be possible to have a bot cross reference all articles which are either tagged with Future film or rated as Future-Class in the Film project banner, then draw up a list of those articles which have one or the other but not both? This would be to help maintain such articles within the Future film department of WP:FILM. Thanks in advance for your consideration. PC78 (talk) 20:37, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible to substitute the template Template:Dated prod every day in the current CAT:PROD per bot? I think it would be very helpful. Thanks. — Aitias // discussion 23:51, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would be, though I don't see the purpose. Mr.Z-man 04:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The point is that there is no need for the deleting admin to insert the given prod reason manually if the template is substituted. Thus, it would be very helpful. — Aitias // discussion 17:44, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I still don't understand. When the prod expires, the template changes to give a copy&paste-able deletion reason, with a (delete) link next to it and which provides an autofilled deletion reason. Mr.Z-man 19:20, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Film cleanup

Can a bot help clear the contents of Category:Film articles using old needs infobox parameter? This simply requires replacing the old |needs infobox= parameter with the new |needs-infobox= (i.e. with the dash).

At the same time, could all transclusions of the redirects FilmsWikiProject and WikiProject Film be replaced with Film?

There are a lot of discussions there that get closed early, it would be great if a bot would go through a 3-4 times a day and remove the closed discussions from the active portion of the page. The bot would also take care of archiving, although this is less of a pain to do by hand. Thanks,--Aervanath talks like a mover, but not a shaker 07:56, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
