Template:Spoilers After attending the Quidditch World Cup with the Weasleys, Harry Potter arrives back at Hogwarts and finds himself entered in the Triwizard Tournament, a challenging competition featuring three dangerous tasks. Harry has to compete with three other champions, Viktor Krum from Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts. Entered into the Triwizard Tournament without his knowledge, Harry is obliged to duel with a dragon and battle with underwater creatures to save "what he will miss the most". Finally the third task is a giant maze. When Harry reaches the Cup at the center of the maze, he should be done with danger, but he is ripped from safety to face his long running nemesis Voldemort. As the promotional poster for the film states, even after the tournament is over, "Difficult times lie ahead".

Alterations from the book
- Barty Crouch, Jr. appears in the first scene of the movie, at the Riddle House, so as not to surprise the audience as much when his story is revealed in the end.
- Dumbledore is angrier at Harry for being in the tournament than in the book, which provoked minor controversy among fans, some who found him "too aggressive." Others pointed out that it showed that he cared for Harry and that it wouldn't be very credible if he received the news calmly and serenely.
- At the Yule Ball, Hermione is seen wearing a pink dress while in the book she is wearing a periwinkle dress.
- In the book, Parvati Patil and Padma Patil, Harry and Ron's Yule Ball dates, though sisters, are in, respectively, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw houses. In the movie, they are both Gryffindors.
- The "third task" does not take place on the Quidditch pitch.
- Harry is helped by Neville instead of Dobby for the "second task."
- The only scene featuring Sirius Black is when his head appears in the fire in the Gryffindor Common Room. Unlike the book, his face is made of embers. In the book his actual head is in the fire. (This is similiar to travelling with Floo Powder.)
- At the Yule Ball, Harry's robes are black, but in the book they are green.
- Harry wakes up from his dream, in the beginning, at the Weasleys' house, but in the book he wakes up at the Dursleys' (as they were cut from the film).
- Harry sees Barty Crouch Jr. casting the Dark Mark, whereas in the book, he sees no one at all and simply hears a voice.
- Both Snape and Moaning Myrtle mention Polyjuice Potion. In the film, it is not mentioned until Barty Crouch, Jr. is exposed.
- The Dragon Fight during the 'First Task' ranges all around the Castle, in the book the dragon never even breaks from its chain.
- Igor Karkaroff isn't referred to as fleeing after news of Lord Voldemort's rebirth, but he is missing.
- During the trial scene in the Pensieve, Karkaroff reveals that Barty Crouch, Jr. was a Death Eater. In the book, he was captured by Aurors along with Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rabastan LeStrange.
- Viktor Krum used Avada Kedavra on Cedric Diggory, but he dodged it and used Expelliarmus to stun Krum. In the book, Krum used the Cruciatus Curse on Cedric, and then Harry used Stupefy to stun Krum. Avada Kedavra cannot be dodged (although it is twice stopped by physical obstacles in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
- In the book, Harry and Krum find a Mad Barty Crouch Senior at the edge of the forest (still alive). He is killed, transfigured into a bone, and buried after Harry leaves to get Dumbledore. In the movie, Hermione, Ron, Harry and Hagrid find him lying dead in the middle of the forest.
- Moody's magical trunk in the book features seven locks, each one giving access to a different content. In the movie, Snape opens the trunk with a spell and reveals only the captured Moody within 7 piled trunks.
- There was no mention of Fleur being part-Veela. Veelas are never mentioned in the film.
- Only 4 persons (Cedric, Frank, Lily and James) echo from Lord Voldemort's wand at the graveyard during the Priori Incantatem versus 5 in the book (Bertha Jorkins is missing, since not being mentionned in the movie at all).
- In the book the mermaid in the prefects bathroom is asleep, however, in the movie she is awake, playing with her hair.
Elements cut from the book
- Ludo Bagman
- Moody using the Imperius Curse on the students, and because of this it did not show Harry learning to resist it.
- In the book, Harry and the Weasleys sit in the top box with Bagman and Malfoy. In the movie, Malfoy mocks them for having "cheap seats."
- The "S.P.E.W." subplot.
- The Dursleys, Mrs. Weasley, Ludo Bagman, Narcissa Malfoy, Bertha Jorkins, Winky and Dobby the House-Elves. Bill Weasley, Charlie Weasley, Percy Weasley was shown only Apparating for the Quidditch World Cup; then Percy was again only seen at the end, when the other schools are leaving.
- The fact that Rita Skeeter is an Animagus. (However, it seems that in an original version of the script this storyline was included, but was later eliminated. In the movie, Madam Maxime eats a beetle (Rita's Animagus form) out of Hagrid's beard when he is talking about his giant heritage, which is similar to the book.)
- The specifics of Barty Crouch, Jr.'s escape from Azkaban and the implications of his father and mother as his accomplices. His mother is never mentioned in the film.
- The explicit identification of Madame Maxime as a half-giantess.
- Harry's reaction to the fate of Neville Longbottom's parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom.
- The Marauder's Map.
- The 1,000 Galleon prize money. Thus, Harry did not subsequently give this money to Fred and George to start the joke shop.
- Snape showing his Dark Mark on his arm.
- Dumbledore telling Sirius Black to round up the old crowd, The Order of the Phoenix.
- Dumbledore telling Snape to return to Voldemort to keep his spy image, and telling Madame Maxime and Hagrid to go find the giants.
- The explanation behind the Priori Incantatem Effect.
- The Dementor's Kiss used on Barty Crouch, Jr.
- The actual World Cup Quidditch game isn't featured in the movie.
- Dumbledore's confrontation with Cornelius Fudge where Fudge refuses to believe Voldermort has returned.
- The Sphinx, Acromantula, and Blast Ended Skrewts in the maze.
- Weasley's Wizard Wheezes.
- Per usual, there is no end scene on the Hogwarts Express.
- Moaning Myrtle doesn't tell Harry about being flushed into the Black Lake.
- There is no mention of veela at all.
- There is no mention of the leprechaun gold, much less any mention of any exchange of money.
- There is no mention of Barty Crouch Jr. going crazy.
- There also is no mention of Barty Crouch Sr. being under the Imperious Curse.
- The 4 champions aren't told about the third task one month prior, as they were in the book.
- Mr. Weasley isn't summoned to help Mad Eye Moody.
- The students don't go on their usual trips to Hogsmeade.
Trivia
- This film is the first Harry Potter film to be rated PG-13 by the MPAA. It was rated PG-13 for sequences of fantasy violence and frightening images. It was also the first Harry Potter movie to be rated 12A by the BBFC, due reasons such as lots of spiders, a character being pulled underground by plant roots, and the instance in which one character says "piss off". In the Netherlands, it is the same: 12, violence and fear. However, in the Philippines, the MTRCB rated the movie as G (General Patronage).
- Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway of Radiohead along with Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker appear in the movie as members of the band called The Weird Sisters
- According to rumors that circulated the Internet in 2004, both Rowan Atkinson and John Malkovich were considered for the role of Lord Voldemort. Neither rumor turned out to be substantiated.
- An official picture released by Warner Bros. featuring Harry standing in front of the Riddle's tombstone shows Voldemort's father named as "Tom Marvolo Riddle," which is The Dark Lord's real name, and both his birth and death years inaccurate. According to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Marvolo Gaunt was Voldemort's maternal grandfather, so it's a highly unlikely occurrence that the Dark Lord's Muggle father could have had the very same name as his middle name, which additionally was Voldemort's. Plus, Voldemort was born in 1926, which makes 1915, as shown in the picture, an unlikely birth year for his father. However a picture has been released that shows the misinformation digitally altered so that it is now accurate.
Wyrd Sisters Lawsuit
In the runup to the movie, a Canadian band called the Wyrd Sisters applied for an injunction barring distribution of the Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire film in Canada. They sued Warner Bros, Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Jonny Greenwood and Phil Selway of Radiohead for the usage of their band name (with a slight alteration - The Weird Sisters) in the film. However, the band playing in the film does not actually have a name and it is never mentioned during the course of the entire 157 minute movie. The injunction was thrown out by a Winnipeg judge. There were suggestions from Warner Brothers that the band should sue J.K. Rowling, because the term "Weird Sisters" appears in her book. In fact, the witches in Shakespeare's Macbeth were also called the weird sisters.
The fact that "wyrd" is not a spelling variant of "weird," and possesses an entirely different definition seems to have been largely overlooked, in particular by the press who consistently point out the "slight difference in spelling" feeling, perhaps, that this echoes the band name "Wyld Stallyns" from the Bill and Ted comedies.
