This is because of the sentence fragment "is retarded", the filter has been fixed so that it doesn't match on this anymore. Apologies for that and thank you for letting us know, you should normally be able to complete the edit now. Have you saved the text ? If not, it should be possible to retrieve it from the log, but I don't know how, a simple copy/paste doesn't preserve the blanks, could anyone do this and post the content below ? I just removed a report at WP:AIV/TB2 for this. I'm not a big fan of this filter 115. Kmhusa, if you want to get around this for now, try making all of your small edits in one large edit. You don't have to do one or two lines at a time. In the meantime, we can discuss improving the filter. Wknight94 talk 15:31, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In any case, I deactivated the tagging function for this filter, too many false positives. It's now log-only. I'm not sure it's useful to have a filter so inclusive though. Cenarium (talk) 13:27, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a false positive. You were trying to add http://trac.godzil.net/gcc4ti to the page, and the URL contains your username, which is exactly what the filter checks for. According to our username policy, while making your username the name of a website is sometimes acceptable, it is not recommended. I suggest that you change your username at WP:CHU. -- King of 16:33, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, you have an obvious conflict of interest, because your username matches the name of the article, which you tried to create. And the second, you do not need to use {{subst:AFC submission/submit}} template when you want to create a real article. Ruslik_Zero 17:56, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You changed parameter "CASNo" from 546-80-5" to "471-15-8". This parameter is automatically linked to the "commonchemistry" web site, and the web used address contains a referrer. So you actually removed one link with a referrer and added another. Ruslik_Zero 14:52, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Description
In celebration of Martha Stewart's Hot Dog special (7-23-09) as well as in light of a nearby sausage factory fire (South San Francisco,7-23-09) I wished to commemorate Stuart Alexander, former sausage maker gone bad...I believe this meets several widely-acknowleged criteria of newsworthiness. The stub for Stuart Alexander, importer, seems to be self-promoting and/or an attempt at advertising and I respectfully request it be reviewed and replaced as well as examined as to why it's not possible to post references on that page;Date and time

You was given a warning (and the edit was tagged as a result) because you inserted "<ref>Insert footnote text here</ref>" into the article (a test type edit). You should have replaced "Insert footnote text here" with something meaningful. In addition you forgot to add <references/> tag, which caused an error message to appear on the page. Consider detecting the case where there are no references (i.e. no <ref></ref> pairs), which was true in this case, and not tagging it as a reference list removal and generating a warning. 68.167.254.43 (talk) 22:20, 8 July 2009 (UTC).[reply]
But any article I suppose should have references? Ruslik_Zero 07:30, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've never seen any wikistats about how many articles there are without inline references. I still see such articles daily, and clicking on Special:Random ten times produced 4 articles with no references, 4 with cite.php-style refs, and 2 with in-line refs in other formats. Anecdotal evidence, of course, but I think the assumption of good faith warrants improving Special:AbuseFilter/79 as requested. Thanks 68.165.77.222 (talk) 04:56, 10 July 2009 (UTC). P.S. Another example of why filter 79 should be improved: a {{reflist}} or <references/> may be left in place even after the last <ref></ref> in the article is removed.[reply]

(Note it was not me that got the report). Whilst clearing the backlog at WP:AIV, I looked at this bot-reported edit. The edit in question was an attempt to convert the redlink What's Happening Now! to the correct What's Happening Now!!. I presume it was the double exclamation mark that the filetr objected to. Whilst it often a sign of vandalism, there are circumstances where it may be correct (chess notation, double factorials in maths, quotations etc.) Therefore users should not be tagged as vandals for attempting to apply it. Can someone investigate this please.  —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 09:12, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the double ecxclamation point is irrelevant. This filter is triggered if any IP within specific ranges edits pages which are typical of Television Radio sockpuppets - presumably, these ranges are Television Radio's ranges. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:49, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So an anonymous user is reported as a vandal because they might be a sock-puppet? This is a blatant lack of good faith, even ignoring that sock-puppet investigations shouldn't be reported at WP:AIV anyway. I'll mention this to User:Mr.Z-bot's owner, and get their input. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 10:33, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To the best of my understanding:
  1. AGF doesn't mean that we can't use reasonable filters which return few false positives, even if set to disallow, due to the few false positives. If you think this particular filter is problematic, try talking to its author - Wknight94. I believe that it may make sense to remove pages like Bern Nadette Stanis from the list of disallowed pages (based on the abuse log), but I wouldn't do it without first consulting with Wknight94.
  2. Bots reporting to WP:AIV work based on heuristics, which may have many false positives. There are no WP:BITE issues involved (as new users shouldn't usually be aware of this page), nor AGF (bots can't assume any faith). Note that the bots reporting there don't actually block users. Obviously, if there was a to high false positive rate, thjis would make the page unmanageable by admins; I don't think we have reached that point.
  3. I fuly agree with you that this edit was probably okay, and I have done it while giving credit to the IP adress.
עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 11:54, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at it again, this was partly me getting muddled with a report I dealt with yesterday where an IP was falsely templated for a "crime they didn't commit". In this case the IP didn't get templated, so I agree AGF isn't so much of an issue here. I think the only issue outstanding is whether the bot should report a breach of this filter as vandalism, or to WP:SSP. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 12:47, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
These abuse filters arise from the bad faith assumption that IP users are vandals. When I have a problem with abuse tags while cleaning up after a bad bot: there's not concern about the bad articles, not concern about a good editor getting a thousand false positives. Just a command to register.
If it arises from the underlying assumption that IP editors are vandals and prioritizes tagging them to make catching their vandalism easier, that is the starting point. AGF does not involve underlying assumptions that IPs and newly registered users are bad for wikipedia-that's what AGF means: don't work from the underlying assumption that the other writer is a vandal.
This abuse/edit filter needs to be rethought, the permanence of the pre-beta testing logs, the wording of the messages, whether or not the wikipedia community has decided IPs are allowed to edit (the community has and they are) and how this entire project is an attempt to sidestep community consensus. That's my opinion.
"May have many false positives" blithely spoken is noted. --69.226.103.13 (talk) 19:09, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Removing bogus information put into article by a bot. Don't tag a proper edit as blanking, when it's nothing of the sort. A careful removal of part of the information, addition of relevant information and a source, is not blanking. Blanking is removing large quantities of text. Remove the pointless tag.

I'm not going to waste more time on this garbage produced by a bot if my edits are going to be tagged as vandalism.

You edit it, research the genus, source the article, verify the authorities, if you think that removing 100 unverified species that should never have been put in the article, replacing them with verified species, sourcing the list, and adding authorities is vandalism. Have fun. 69.226.103.13 (talk) 08:56, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, every edit in my abuse log is a false positive. How many ways can wikipedia find to be hostile to professional editing by qualified researchers? First I'm abusive for deleting garbage from wikipedia, then I'm abusive for moving garbage, then I'm abusive for deleting more garbage, but without any scanning for adding and correctly formatting appropriate information, then I'm abusive for reverting my own edit.

Anyone figure out that this is just insulting to tag a good editors edits as abuse? --69.226.103.13 (talk) 09:11, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

With the current technology and dumb computers, the system cannot tell that you are a good editor. One simple way to make that clearer would be to create an account. Wknight94 talk 11:17, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
So you tagged me inaccurately and are accusing me of being a vandal simply because I'm an IP? --69.226.103.13 (talk) 17:09, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Please see the note at the top of your filter log: "Entries in this list do not necessarily mean the edits were abusive." Wknight's suggestion to register an account is a good one as you will quickly be ignored by the abuse filter. Heuristics are a necessary component of the filter. However, if you wish to continue editing as an IP, you'll run into false positives from time to time. –xenotalk 17:14, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It does not say that in the edit summary, what it does is call my edit abusive. You've singled me out to label my edits as abusive. The heuristics are faulty if they target only IPs.
IPs contribute all of the time to wikipedia, to target them solely because they are IPs is to say "anyone can edit" is a lie. --69.226.103.13 (talk) 17:18, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And, if you create a system that makes false positives you need to be able to remove them. --69.226.103.13 (talk) 17:19, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Calm down. The abuse filter mechanism is quite new and we are still gaining experience in making proper and appropriate use of it. Many of the rules crafted so far give wider leeway to established editors. It's a crude attempt to emulate what human editors tend to do. Automating good judgment about applying such biases is in the future, maybe—hopefully. The most expedient way to solve your problem is for you to create an account and edit logged in. I bet you notice a difference in how you are treated by other editors as well as the filters. —EncMstr (talk) 17:21, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(ec*2)You were tagged because of a combination of two things: 1.) you do not look like an established editor because you have not created an account, and 2.) because you removed references from an article. 99% of the time, when these two conditions are met, the edit is indeed vandalism. In order not to offend the other 1% (i.e. you), the filter simply tags the edit so that someone can check the validity. That is all. No need to get offended. If you have a suggestion for a better heuristic that catches just as much vandalism while not tagging proper edits, let us know. Wknight94 talk 17:22, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not uncalm. Please feel free to strike out your personal comment about me, let me know when you do, and when we can discuss the issue. --69.226.103.13 (talk) 17:24, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So... putting all other issues aside for a moment - aside from creating an account (which I gather that he won't be doing), is there any way that the abuse filter can be tweaked so that 69.226.'s edits are no longer disallowed or tagged by it? I can understand where the guy (I'm assuming that you're a guy, sorry if wrong) is coming from, to be honest. It seems that everywhere he turns at the moment, he's running into automatic brick walls that prevent him from fixing errors introduced by an automatic process. I'd probably be feeling pretty hacked off by it too... --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 17:37, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The filter I was referring to (way back when) was log-only, so he wasn't running into any brick walls. I don't know about any other filter(s) he is tripping. Wknight94 talk 18:41, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find the specific comment now (this long-running Algae/Anybot/Bots/BAG/Abuse filter/ClueBot discussion is scattered over several different boards and user talk pages at this point) but I believe that 69.226. stated that the abuse filter is actively preventing him from making certain edits due to his status as an IP - then ClueBot reverted some of the edits that he did manage to get past the filter. Emotions do seem to be running high here - but if the above is occurring, I can understand the frustration and how he feels that he's getting kicked in the teeth by 'the system' whenever he tries to fix blatant errors in the articles that were created by (yet another) bot that was doing things that it shouldn't have been doing. So he gets narked about the entire business and complains angrily about it in several places. Then he gets told to calm down by various people (who just see some guy ranting without knowing the full background to the case - and how could they?) - so he feels as though his complaints are not being taken seriously and that no-one appreciates his work. Well, that's my assessment of the situation, anyway. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 18:58, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He commented recently that even after he hit "save" after being warned it wouldn't go through. However, I don't see anything that was tagged as "disallow"? Was that Cluebot stepping in and taking the plate? Or was it an unlogged AF action? Addressing your point that we aren't appreciating his work: I don't see that at all. What I see is several solutions being offered, and 69.x.x.x refusing to take them on board. On the other hand, we took steps to address his concerns (including renaming the filter) but these take time to percolate. –xenotalk 19:04, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just to make it clear - I'm not personally accusing anyone of anything here. As far as I can see 69.226. just wants to go about his editing without being pestered by bots or abuse filter messages - and he wants all such to stop immediately (which I don't suppose is an unreasonable request if one is unfamiliar with the inner workings of WP). TBH, I don't think that he'd be so upset about all this (if at all) if it hadn't been for the User:Anybot debacle. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 19:27, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Good guess, Kurt Shaped Box. There are too many badly amateur programs running on wikipedia. This one also attached a tag for an edit by a different IP to my IP abuse filter. Again, bad, bad programming.
If it's not up and running, why did the community grant the right to make a permanent log of it?
How many names have I been called, and how many lame essays like "don't be a dick," and "tendentious editor," (read: "shut up") should a user put up with while trying to correct a major problem on wikipedia? Or since I started trying to straighten out the mess made by anybot starting over 4 months ago? Wikipedia has already chased away other editors who have been trying to clean this mess up. How long should wikipedia look like an idiot in the evolutionary biology department?
I think people should support my solutions to the anybot mess, and stop telling me to do different things and calling me names and telling me to shut up, since I am the one making certain that the entire mess is cleaned up this time, without chasing me away like all of the others who tried to deal with anybot and the BAG about this. And it's one foul mess. --69.226.103.13 (talk) 06:18, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I gotta quit. I don't like being stalked by a half-baked tagging system. It's ridiculous. If you had never called it an abuse filter to begin with (but, that's your intention, to stalk abuse by IPs), and if wikipedia writers had not made so many nasty remarks to me while I'm trying to fix this mess, ..., but, no, I'm not going to look at article histories and see every edit I made to correct anybot's garbage tagged as vandalism.

I'm also not going to listen anymore to wikipedia editors saying, "it's not an abuse filter, we just call it that." "It's not about tagging vandalism even though that's the purpose." "Stop your tendentious editing." "Don't be a dick." "Calm down." Why doesn't everyone pay attention to the mess these taxon-generating bots make and stop it a lot sooner instead of going after the whistle-blower every step of the way.

Wikipedia's fight against vandalism trumps everything, but especially a good, reliable encyclopedia and researchers willing to write it.

This is what the latest absurd filter tagged of mine: [[[Choanoflagellatea|Choanoflagellates]]. I did that as a courtesy to readers, and it's standard form for biology. I don't think biologists are going to be sticking around as long as I have, though. --69.226.103.13 (talk) 09:41, 3 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If so, the filter would be ripe for immediate decommissioning. Indeed, the filter appears to be malfunctioning to such an extent that it flags new pages with no discernible connection to Michael Jackson at all [9] [10] [11]; a flood of false positives renders the abuse filter feature useless, as well as insulting new editors who may perceive that they are being accused of "vandalism" in page histories. The correct procedure is:
  1. Move the page to the proper title, or list it at WP:Requested moves if you can't.
  2. If the page is relatively new, and the old title is an "implausible typo", then tag the redirect with a {{db-redirtypo}} tag.

I see you aligned the parameters so the equal signs would line up. In so doing, you included several spaces before most of the parameter names. You may have to tolerate the whitespace filter if you are going to do that. Wknight94 talk 12:53, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The filter triggered because the overall change in the article's size as a result of your edit was very high and in the negative direction. The filter is unable to distinguish between removing large sections of an article and weeding out a large amount of unnecessary text. The bottom line, then, is that this was not a false positive, as you did remove content - you just put it back in in a way that was considerably shorter. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:06, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify further, if you know your edit is constructive, ignore the warnings and hit save. This particular filter will never be terribly accurate, and so it will never prevent you from editing. It's intention is to advise new users that there may be concerns from real editors later if their edit is not constructive. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:09, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just to clarify - I wasn't asking you to do that (I don't know enough to suggest if it's a good idea or not), I was only asking if I should continue to report the warning or ignore it. I presume if the warning is disabled, this type of edit will still be tagged for review? Thanks. 58.8.10.170 (talk) 16:28, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So what exactly is the point of reporting a false positive if no one can do anything to correct the situation?
My concern isn't just my reputation, but also the article. For a long time, its origin will have that black cloud over it on the very first screenful of history that shows up. たろ人 (talk) 21:03, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We can delete that one edit, if you agree, たろ人. We need your agreement because you will no longer be attributed for creating the article, although I'll place a null edit in the article history to clarify it. Stifle (talk) 11:55, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Filter 98 (Short articles)

This filter is tripped when a redirect is created. Is there any way that it can be adjusted so that use of #REDIRECT [[Redirect destination]] means that the filter is not tripped? Mjroots (talk) 18:41, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was adding a humorous parody spell to the harry potter spell page: "Panteloneous Poopicus". IncognitoNOW (talk) 04:43, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I assume the filters caught "poop" in the spell I was adding. What I was adding was constructive; there are spells on that page from video games, so why can't I add a humorous spell from a well known video?

I was just fixing a misspelling of the word loser, no wonder no one has changed it yet...

Everything I wrote about Michael Barnett was completely true especially due to the fact that I meet the Man among men myself.

The Magician (Tarot card) (filter log)
Description
A pop culture reference talks about a Supernatural Season 4 episode; the episode's name is "Criss Angel is a Douchebag". On the page it simply listed the name. Linking to the episode list may be more practical but the point remains that the episode name is effectively an insult. 122.106.222.64 (talk) 08:47, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
