== Japanese Events in London ==

Hello there,

Would anyone be able to tell me of either some regular events or of a calendar of sporadic events promoting Japanese language/culture/etc in London? Or of some where simply people can go and meet Japanese people. I have just moved back to the UK after 2 years there and am really keen to make some new Japanese friends.

Any ideas?

Adding bands to Wikipedia: where's the line?

What qualifies a band or musical artist being included on Wikipedia? Certainly not just any guy who strums away can put himself on here. 72.219.147.187 (talk) 01:05, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He could, but his article would be deleted if it couldn't satisfy WP:Notability (music), not to mention WP:Conflict of interest. Clarityfiend (talk) 01:33, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I see, thank you. I was curious, having come across some totally random artists with blunt, almost trivial pages, using the Random page link. lol 72.219.147.187 (talk) 01:58, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you are concerned, you could tag the articles with {{db-band}} if there are absolutely no claims that the band is important in any way, or for borderline cases, you could file an Articles for Deletion discussion. --Jayron32 04:56, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
WP:BAND pretty well spells out what constitutes Wikipedia-notability. 99.166.95.142 (talk) 15:58, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Artists similiar to Type O Negative

I really like the album October Rust by the band Type O Negative.I find it great for the fall and Halloween season. However, I have been looking for similar artists for quite some time with no success. I am looking for some dark, moody mysterious metal music that is not overly fast paced and without excessive growling or screaming vocals. slow and spooky but heavy. Can anyone offer any suggestions? thanks! 10draftsdeep (talk) 15:09, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Try The Pixies or Hüsker Dü - strictly neither is "metal" (but it's not like there's an appellation contrôlée to determine what is or isn't), both are heavy and noisy and dark, and both have a weirdo vibe that makes them sound like the the house band at Arkham Asylum, and there's genuinely beautiful melody buried down in that noise. 87.115.106.169 (talk) 15:21, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestions. I am actually somewhat familiar with both of those bands and know they are quite legendary in the alt rock world. I am also open to additional suggestions for some artists who lean a little more to the darker side in overall theme and tone of their music. cheers, 10draftsdeep (talk) 17:50, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Last FM is very good for this type of question. Have a look at their Type O Negative page for a bunch of similar artists. Also there is this fun site where you can type an artist's name in and get a bunch of similar artists floating around the screen. The nearer they are to the centre, the more similar they're likely to be. --Richardrj talk email 18:13, 30 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A similar service to Richardrj's suggestions is Pandora. - Akamad (talk) 03:04, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Although Pandora is not available outside the USA (I don't know where the OP lives). The OP might also like to check out Porcupine Tree, who are prog metal. --Richardrj talk email 08:43, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestions.10draftsdeep (talk) 17:38, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

UK Musician

ok, I saw a guy perform on TV, thought he was great but forget his name! This is what I remember:

Solo artist, sounds a little like Mike Skinner from The Streets but more acoustic. His music had a dance, almost reggae vibe about it.

His name may have been Damian(maybe???0 but it was not Albarn or Rice.

Can anyone help with the name??!!203.41.139.85 (talk) 03:15, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Damien Jurado? He's American though. --Richardrj talk email 08:37, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could it possibly be Damian Marley? He is from Jamaica though. Hmrox (talk) 14:13, 1 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Was he white - might be Jack Penate or Jamie T... any other details you can remember? --Coolcato (talk) 22:48, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes! It's Jamie T! Thanks to Coolcato and everyone else for your help. Dunno where I got Damian from...203.41.139.85 (talk) 21:08, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. John song

I was wondering if the song, "Comin' Back," by Dr. John is available on any of his albums. It was the theme from K-Ville.69.203.157.50 (talk) 03:20, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

http://www.allmusic.com is the place to look if you are trying to find info on anything musical. I would try there first. --Jayron32 05:35, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I checked, and there was nothing in that song title by Dr. John.69.203.157.50 (talk) 08:10, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If it ain't on Allmusic, it probably ain't available. The site is pretty comprehensive, ESPECIALLY for well-known artists like Dr. John. --Jayron32 00:36, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, whatever the case may be, how can anyone get in contact with Dr. John and discuss releasing, "Comin' Back," on one of his albums or as a single?69.203.157.50 (talk) 02:36, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently it's on 2005's Sippiana Hericane under the title "Wade: Hurricane Suite: Aftermath". [1] Malcolm XIV (talk) 12:40, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Innuendo

Heard on House M.D(?) some time ago:
One for each?
That's what she said!

I'm not sure I get it...Anyone? decltype (talk) 08:12, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would need to have a bit more context behind these sentences to be able to try and explain - one of what for each for example? Gazhiley (talk) 10:34, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's probably a reference to simultaneous vaginal and anal sex. 58.7.79.15 (talk) 11:00, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"Innuendo" is itself an innuendo, in this case. →Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 14:38, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks guys. I found the quotes at IMDb, and upon re-reading them, I'm fairly sure I get it. It is true that I didn't provide sufficient context, because I didn't remember any more of it. Anyway, judge for yourselves:

  • House: I slept with Cuddy. After she helped me detox from vicoden [sic]. I've been clean for almost 24 hours.
  • [Wilson stares at House]
  • House: Okay, thought I'd mention it.
  • Wilson: Wow. Wow! One for each.
  • House: That's what she said. "Haaa."

decltype (talk) 14:43, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Implying House gave her two orgasms. Probably. Vimescarrot (talk) 17:39, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I believe that is one WOW for sleeping with her, and one WOW for the fact that he needed detox. Just guessing from the transcript, didn't see the show. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.155.97.57 (talk) 07:56, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The second WOW was probably for House going 24 hours without a fix, as Wilson knows about his drug addiction. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:45, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Onward

I was interested to notice in an episode of " How I met your Mother " that one of the actors, I believe it was Jason Segel, was wearing a Canterbury of New Zealand Rugby jersey, even with a New Zealand Coat of Arms on it. I wonder why he chose it, and where I could get one. They are ( or were - or maybe still will be ) made right here in Christchurch, so it shouldn't be too hard. If anyone is aware as to why Mr. Segel did wear that particular jersey, I would be interested in knowing. I assume they are sold in the United States, since many international sports teams do so ( except the All Blacks, who for some strange reason choose foreign made clothing ). I do recall seeing Robert Mitchum wearing a Canterbury Apparel shirt in something he made years ago, but I cannot remember what. It appears his character was looking after someone else's children as if he were a friend of the family or their grandfather, and there was a night scene upstairs as the kids were told to go to bed. In addition, some years ago Christian Slater played a teen in a movie - I can't remember the name - it may have been a thriller of some sort, and in his untidy room there was a New Zealand flag. If anyone knows which ones those were, that would be good. Thanks. The Russian.Christopherlilly (talk) 08:56, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

unsigned/underground artist

I recently attended an open mic showcase in nyc at The Bowery Poetry Club and saw an artist named Stikz Greenz perform; besides Google, how can i find out more about him and his music and/or contact him for business purposes? thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnyboy333 (talkcontribs) 16:00, 2 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lyrics

There's an alternative rock song with a sort of grand, anthemic chorus whose lyrics are something along the lines of, "I remember the day [something, something]... you watched me turn and walk away..." Does anyone know the name of the artist, and the song?

Thank you! 75.87.121.119 (talk) 00:01, 3 October 2009 (UTC)MelancholyDanish[reply]

"Anna Begins" by Counting Crows from the album August and Everything After, maybe??? --Jayron32 00:50, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It does sound like it might be the Counting Crows. That's a great album; I'll find the song and listen to it. Thank you! 75.87.121.119 (talk) 01:48, 3 October 2009 (UTC)MelancholyDanish[reply]

Olympics Questions

Since Rio de Janeiro won the right to host 2016 Summer Olympics. Became the 1st ever Brazilian and South American City to host an Olympics.

Rio de Janeiro and Brazil has me thinking will a city in a Africa Country follow their steps? If not what? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jessicaabruno (talkcontribs) 03:42, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We are not a WP:CRYSTALBALL. Dismas|(talk) 03:50, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Though predicting future hosting cities would be difficult, one thing is certain: See IOC and do a word search for "bribe". 173.103.205.125 (talk) 11:51, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's been known (or at least suspected) to happen. But now that the 2016 issue has been settled, when does the bidding begin for 2020? That might be the closest we could come to an answer to the OP question. →Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 11:58, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The 2020 Summer Olympics article has some information, though it is to the most part speculation and reports of various cities showing interest. It says Rabat and two South African cities are potential candidates. There is no time-frame mentioned, though. /Coffeeshivers (talk) 12:29, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To get an idea of the time frame, I suggest looking at the table at the top of 2018_Winter_Olympics and adding two years. Of course, the dates will not be exactly the same but it indicates that the official deadline for applications, and thus the start of the selection process for the 2020 games, will be in the middle of 2011. /Coffeeshivers (talk) 12:35, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Since this is all speculation anyway, can we look forward to something like the section below, in the 2016 Opening Ceremonies? If so, that might explain the IOC's decision process. →Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 16:12, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brazil Carnival Queen

"Waiting in the Wings"

OK, here's an "ID this song for me" question where googling "lyrics" in addition to the lyrics does not help. There's a punk song, probably late 80s, in which the chorus goes "Waiting in the wings! — In the wiiiinnngs! — Waiting in the wings!" Googling has not helped, and Allmusic has not helped, and neither has YouTube, because I have lamely only remembered this part of the song. The repeated "in the wings" has not helped with the search engines. Tempshill (talk) 02:54, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Could this be the band: Channel 3 (band)? Genre and time appear to be right, and they seem to have a song titled "Waiting in the wings". --NorwegianBlue talk 11:24, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I skimmed right past this in my search when I couldn't find an audio sample of even 1 second — thanks — anyone know where a sample might be? Tempshill (talk) 04:54, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It appears to be available for listening at Last.fm, see here. Requires a login, though. I don't know the site, and didn't get a login to check if it's actually there, but you might want to try it (with a disposable email address, perhaps). --NorwegianBlue talk 20:10, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What episode/film is this?

Hi, I'm trying to find the name of a black-and-white television show, episode, or film (I don't know if it was an episode of a program or even a film) that I saw a long time ago. It might have been a television program or a film in the tradition of the The Twilight Zone (1959 TV series), The Outer Limits (1963 TV series), or even Alfred Hitchcock Presents. All I can remember about it is that a man was visiting a therapist because he was either having recollections of a past life in the French Revolution or maybe he had been dreaming about it, I don't know. In any case, I think he was upset because in the past life/dream they were getting ready to execute him by guillotine, and there was probably a love interest involved. Anyway, I can't recall what happened exactly, but at the end the camera pans to either the patient or the therapist (can't remember which) and one of them is missing their head in the real world, because they had "lost" their head in the other world. There might have been some kind of hypnotism involved, such as a past life regression or something. Does this story ring any bells for anyone? Viriditas (talk) 09:12, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have you considered an alternative to this being an episode or movie that you are recollecting? 68.244.154.152 (talk) 12:39, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Water squirt handheld games from the 1970s? Like a water Gameboy?

Does anyone remember these? They were puzzle games that contained water, some had hoops that had to be squirted onto pegs. There were various different games. What where they called? They were popular in the late 70s. 90.216.105.231 (talk) 17:31, 5 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
