Center of Sassuolo

Sassuolo is one of the important industrial center of region Emilia-Romagna. Town is situated 17 km southwest of Modena and north west of Bologna, located along the river Secchia.

History and monuments

The first historical mention of the town dates year 980 and the second year 1035.

1078 - the consuls of Sassolese swore loyalty to the Municipality of Modena.

1373 - Sassuolo passed to the Este family at the request of the citizens themselves who obtained the right to extract water from the river Secchia. Were expanded under the Este Castle is the ancient town (then separated from the subsequent fortification of the fortress) and erected two churches dedicated to St. Francis and St. George (patron saint of the city).

The birth of the first initiatives of manufacturing silk, wool, textiles. Agriculture developed and the center, strategically situated in the foothills to its neighbors, it becomes an important market to exchange goods.

In 1503 were institutionalized by Duke Alfonso d'Este a privilege that sanctioned eight days of the fair. Then from year to year, century after century, in the heart of all Sassuolo, to this day an event known Fairs of October, the largest historical and social event.

(1599-1796) was the period the Dukes of Este dominate Sassuolo. It was a period of significant activity and a great civil and economic progress.

(1814-1859) as for some historian the period of first ceramic progress in the town.

Among the main sights in the town is the Ducal palace of Sassuolo projected by architect Bartolomeo Avanzini in 1634. In (1638-1656) part of interiors was frescoed by the French baroque painter Jean Boulanger. Angelo Colonna, Agostino Mitelli, Baldassarre Bianchi e Gian Giacomo Monti were invited by Jean Boulanger to working on palace decorating. Luca Colombi, Giovanni Lazzoni, Lattanzio Maschio, Guercino, Salvator Rosa, Ludovico Lana have worked to special trim finishing.

In the ground is a large pool surrounded by ruins called Il fontanazzo.

Economy

Sassuolo is the center of Italian tile industry and on of the important in the world. The town's wealth derives from Ceramic tiles Factories. 80% of all italian ceramic tiles are produced in Sassuolo.

The industrial growth began in 50s.

Now there are more than 300 ceramic factories operating in Sassuolo.
