Asmaa Mahfouz (Arabic: أسماء محفوظ, born February 1, 1985) is one of the founders of the April 6 Youth Movement, human rights actavist and credited by many as one of those spearheading the 2011 Egyptian Protests in Cairo and El-Mahalla El-Kubra.


Overview

Asmaa Mahfouz is one of the founders of the April 6 Youth Movement.

Early life

She was born in Egypt and is of Arab decent. Ms. Mahfouz, born in 1984, graduated from the business management school of the American University in Cairo.[1]

2008 protests

Upon graduation, Mahfouz emerged as an activist on social media pages throughout Egypt. In 2008, Mahfouz and other activists connected with the April 6 Movement used the internet to mobilize support for a general strike. As a result, Mahfouz and her family were subjected to harassment by Egyptian security forces.

January 2011 uprising in Egypt

Asmaa Mahfouz is considered one of the most important symbols of the January 2011 uprising in Egypt[2]. Using Facebook, Twitter and a famous YouTube video and her January 18th video tape [3] Ms. Mahfouz also rallied thousands of people to participate in the protests. The new Egyptian government that formed after the uprising requested to meet with her, but she declined[4].
