Scope

This WikiProject aims to organise, expand, and improve Wikipedia's coverage on areas or subjects related to open source methodologies and philosophies, open access scholarship, and open content.

Our scope includes:

  1. Open society, free culture, and related philosophical movements
  2. Open content
  3. Open source methodologies in artistic production, education, business, and politics
  4. Open access to scholarly journals and monographs
  5. Open scientific research
  6. Open government and government data
  7. The free software and open-source software movements
  8. Legal aspects of these topics: intellectual property law, open source licensing, Creative Commons, copyleft, defensive patents
  9. Political and legislative aspects of these topics
  10. People who are closely related to these topics

Our goal is to produce detailed, well written, and NPOV articles on all articles related to these topics.

The scope overlaps with the following projects and task forces:

Goals

The WikiProject Open Access is concerned with the following:

  1. starting and improving articles related to open access, as per this provisional list
  2. flagging OA-ness of references cited in articles on any topic, by way of {{Open access}}
  3. bringing Open-Access articles onto Wikisource
  4. bringing materials from open-access publications onto Commons
  5. supporting the reuse of such open-access-derived materials across Wikimedia projects
Item 1 is in the purview of WikiProject Academic Journals but extends beyond journals into open-access books and open-access repositories.
Item 2 would be integrated with existing citation templates, especially {{Cite journal}}, which is also in the scope of WikiProject Academic Journals.
Item 3 overlaps with Wikisource:WikiProject Academic Papers
Items 4 and 5 overlap with GLAM initiatives.

WikiProject Open Access to-do list:

Here are some tasks awaiting attention:
Quality and importance

"Quality" refers to article quality and "importance" refers to how important an article is for developing this project. When a user tags an article with the above template and rates the article, then it will be included in this table after the bot runs (every three days). To update the table immediately, tell the bot to check things out by making a request here. Either select "Open access" from the list or put those words in the box using that capitalization.

Userbox

To support this project, consider adding the following userbox to your userpage.

This user is interested in open access to the research literature.

Do this by adding {{User:UBX/open access}} to your userpage. This will also put you in Category:Wikipedians interested in open access.

Organization systems

The three most common organizational systems on Wikipedia are navigational boxes, lists, and categories. Here are the organizational tools used by this project:

The {{Open navbox}} navbox:

The {{Academic publishing}} navbox:

The {{user:Bluerasberry/template:openness}} navbox, made by user:Waldir and then nominated for deletion for being an orphan:
