The 100[1] (pronounced "The Hundred" as opposed to "The One Hundred") is an American post-apocalyptic drama television series that is airing on The CW during the 2013–14 American television season.[2][3][4] The series is based on a book of the same name, the first in a series by Kass Morgan, and developed by Jason Rothenberg.[5] It premiered on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, following Arrow.[6]

On May 8, 2014, The CW renewed The 100 for a second season.[7]

Premise

The series is set 97 years after a devastating nuclear war wiped out almost all life on Earth. The only survivors are the residents of twelve space stations in Earth's orbit prior to the war, and the descendants of the people on earth who survived the war, called "grounders" by the 100. The space stations banded together to form a single massive station named "The Ark", where about 2,400 people live.[1] Resources are scarce and all crimes no matter their nature or severity are punishable by death ("floating") unless the perpetrator is under 18 years of age. After the Ark's life support systems are found to be critically failing, one hundred juvenile prisoners are declared "expendable" and sent to the surface in a last ditch attempt to determine if Earth is habitable again.

The ark consist of the space stations previously representing the nations of the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, China, Japan, India, Russia, Venezuela, Spain, Brazil, and Uganda.

Cast

Main cast

  • Eliza Taylor as Clarke Griffin,[5] daughter of Dr. Abigail Griffin and Jake Griffin. She was imprisoned as an accessory to the crimes of her father, who was executed for attempting to release critical information regarding the Ark's swiftly deteriorating life support systems. Down on the ground, she is portrayed as relatively benevolent, possessing natural leadership qualities.
  • Bobby Morley as Bellamy Blake,[5] brother to Octavia. He professes a strong determination to protect his sister, spanning from her birth. He is the initial leader of the 100, possessing strong leadership skills. He develops from an almost antagonistic character to an antihero, realizing the 100 matter more to him then he lets on.
  • Marie Avgeropoulos as Octavia Blake,[5] sister of Bellamy - a rare relationship given the Ark's one-child rule. She was kept a secret by her family, living under the floorboards to avoid detection by authorities. She's a fiercely independent girl who is constantly avoiding authority and getting boy's attention, much to Bellamy's displeasure.
  • Thomas McDonell as Finn Collins,[5] a cunning, amusing, and reckless teenager who is always looking for fun, adventure, and a peaceful solution. He is also Clarke's love interest, though the relationship starts collapsing when he is later revealed to be Raven's boyfriend.
  • Christopher Larkin as Monty Green,[5] a smart and tech-savvy teenager who is a valuable asset to the teenagers down on earth due to his intellect. His family is in charge of the pharmaceuticals on the Ark. He is best friends with Jasper, remaining loyal through thick and thin.
  • Devon Bostick as Jasper, a goofy, outgoing and adventurous boy who risked his life to save Octavia - whom he harbors feelings for - from a river snake. After his capture and subsequent rescue from grounders, he is anxious on top of his other personality traits.
  • Paige Turco as Councilwoman Dr. Abigail Griffin,[5] mother of Clarke. She is the chief medical officer of the Ark and the main proponent regarding the habitable status of Earth. Her husband was the chief engineer, Jake Griffin.
  • Henry Ian Cusick as Councilman Marcus Kane,[5] the Chancellor's second-in-command. Though initially wanting to kill for the remaining members of the Ark to survive, he later feels guilt and won't rest until everyone left alive is safe.
  • Isaiah Washington as Chancellor Thelonius Jaha,[5] father of Wells and the elected leader of the Ark.
  • Eli Goree as Wells Jaha (season 1),[5] Clarke's former best friend and son of the Ark's chancellor - a relationship for which he is despised by the rest of the 100. He intentionally committed a crime when he found out about the imminent launch to join the expedition to Earth and try to protect Clarke, whom he harbors feelings for. Clarke despises him, as she believes he is the reason her father is dead, until realizing it wasn't him.

Recurring cast

  • Lindsey Morgan as Raven Reyes, a zero-gravity mechanic when onboard the Ark. She later was launched in a pod sent to Earth. It is revealed her boyfriend is Finn Collins, one of the 100. Raven has been helping The 100 to communicate with the Ark.
  • Richard Harmon as John Murphy, Bellamy's main thug and generally disliked by the group. After being wrongfully accused and nearly killed, he was banished from the camp for pursuing Charlotte for killing Wells, causing her to commit suicide. He later returns, having escaped from the Grounders, although he's been beaten severely and revealed to carry an illness with him that affects the whole camp. He seems to have come around and forgiven the 100 for banishing him. Later, however, he kills Connor for tying the rope around his neck when he was sentenced to death for his actions.
  • Sachin Sahel as Jackson, Abby's helper and confidant.
  • Ricky Whittle as Lincoln, a Grounder who initially belongs with his Tribe, but later rescues Octavia and they fall in love. He betrays his own tribe so that Octavia can live, but he leaves when he knows a war is coming, though eventually returning for her.
  • Alessandro Juliani as Sinclair, a technician on the Ark.

Guest stars

  • Chris Browning as Jake Griffin, Dr. Abigail Griffin's husband and Clarke's father. He's the one who found out the Ark was dying, but when he planned on telling all the residents, he was floated, and Clarke, knowing off his plans, was locked up.
  • Terry Chen as Commander Shumway (season 1). He appears in public as a dedicated worker who follows orders, but he has some dangerous plans up his sleeve and has committed or sent people to commit some of the worst punishable crimes on the Ark. He is loyal to Councilwoman Diana. His plan to have Bellamy Blake assassinate Jaha is later confessed to by Bellamy himself, and Shumway is arrested, and is killed on Diana's orders.
  • Kate Vernon as Councilwoman Diana Sydney (season 1), a woman who had been part of the Council for a long time before stepping down. She believes Jaha to be a poor leader, and secretly designs a plan to overthrow him. This fails, but she still manages to get herself and her team on the exodus ship that launches down to earth. The ship crashes however, she's presumed dead.
  • Dichen Lachman as Anya, leader of the Grounders
  • Jarod Joseph as Miller.
  • Chelsey Reist as Harper, one of the 100.
  • Katie Stuart as Monroe, one of the 100.
  • Joseph Gatt as Tristan, another leader/commander of the Grounders.

Reception

The series premiere was watched by an estimated 2.7 million American viewers, and received an 18-49 rating of 0.9. It is considered the most-watched show in its time-slot on The CW since 2010 with the series Life Unexpected.[12]

Allison Keene of The Hollywood Reporter gave a negative review to the show, and writes "The sci-fi drama presents The CW's ultimate vision for humanity: an Earth populated only by attractive teenagers, whose parents are left out in space."[13] Kelly West of Cinema Blend gave it a more positive review while noting, "CW's Thrilling New Sci-fi Drama Is A Keeper. CW's The 100 seeks to explore that concept and more with a series that's about equal parts young adult drama, sci-fi adventure and thriller. It takes a little while for the series to warm up, but when The 100 begins to hit its stride, a unique and compelling drama begins to emerge." [14] IGN also gave the show a more positive review. The article, written by Eric Goldman, gave the episode an '8.0 out of 10' score. In his verdict, Goldman said that: 'I’ve seen the first four episodes of The 100 and there’s a lot to like here, with things getting impressively dark and edgy in the episodes to come. CW shows like Arrow and The Vampire Diaries began weakly (especially TVD, which started outright bad), before evolving into really fun, involving series, and this show is starting out on a much better note. As the CW pushes further into genre material, The 100 has one of the better pilots so far for the network and offers some intriguing elements that hopefully will get properly expanded over its 13-episode season, for those seeking a new sci-fi fix on TV.' [15]
