Made in Chelsea (abbreviated MIC) is a BAFTA award-winning, structured-reality television series broadcast by E4 in the United Kingdom. Made in Chelsea chronicles the lives of affluent young people in the West London areas of Belgravia, Kings Road, and Knightsbridge as well as their travels to other locations including Dubai, Finland, Marrakech, Cannes, Verbier, Amsterdam, Saint-Tropez, South Africa, Venice and New York City.

History

The first series of Made in Chelsea began on 9 May 2011, with an 8 episode run. Originally, the show had a total of thirteen regular cast members and five with supporting roles. All but three of the original cast members returned for at least a second series, with just Funda Onal, Agne Motiejunaite and CJ Chapman departing.

The show was renewed for a 10-episode second series as part of E4's decision to stop airing Friends and filming began on 29 July 2011. The second series premiered on 19 September 2011 and was followed by a reunion episode presented by Rick Edwards, and a 90-minute Christmas Special, which aired on 22 December 2011. This series introduced several new cast members - new regulars Jamie Laing, Victoria Baker-Harber, Oliver Proudlock, Louise Thompson and Chloe Green. Alice Davidson, Gemma Gregory also joined with supporting roles. After this series, Alice departed the show after just one series.

A 10-episode third series was confirmed on 21 November 2011 and began airing on 2 April 2012. Four new females joined the show - Kimberley Garner, Harriet Loder and sisters Natalie and Karin Joel - none of whom remained for than one series. This was also the last series to feature original cast members Hugo Taylor, Caggie Dunlop and Amber Atherton. Recurring cast members Gabriella Tristao and Gemma Gregory also departed.

The fourth series began on 15 October 2012, with five new cast members including Andy Jordan, Sam Cussins, Stevie Johnson and Lucy Watson. Later on, it was confirmed two other cast members were joining the show for the fourth series - Sophia Sassoon and Ianthe Rose Cochrane-Stack. Carly Rothman and Ashley James also debuted in this series. However, Sophia, Ianthe, Sam and Carly did not stay for than one series, and original cast members Gabriella Ellis and Fredrik Ferrier also departed the show. Series 4 was followed by a Christmas special which aired on 24 December 2012.

Series 5 began on 8 April 2013. Four new cast members joined the show: sisters Fran and Olivia Newman-Young, Phoebe-Lettice Thompson and her on/off boyfriend Josh Coombs. Tara Keeney also later joined as a supporting cast member. This was the last series to feature long-serving cast members Ollie Locke, Richard Dinan and Millie Mackintosh. Ashley James also departed after two series, and Olivia, Josh and Tara would not return for series 6.

Filming for the sixth series of the show began in late July 2013, with cast member Jamie Laing revealing the first day of filming on 25 July 2013. The last day of filming was revealed as 16 November 2013, through cast member Lucy Watson. The sixth series began on 14 October 2013 and a third Christmas special followed on 23 December 2013. It introduced three new regular cast members - Sophie Hermann, Sam Thompson and Stephanie Pratt, former star of The Hills. Five new recurring cast members were also introduced, one of whom (Dave 'Miffy' Mifsud) caused controversy after making offensive remarks gay marriage. None of the five returned for series seven. This was also the last series to feature Phoebe-Lettice Thompson (Series 5-6) and long-serving cast member Francis Boulle (Series 1-6).

On 8 October 2013, it was announced that three series of the show had been commissioned by E4. This means the show will continue broadcasting until the end of 2014, at the very least. On 18 March 2014, it was announced that a new six-part series based in New York would be filmed and aired from 10 August 2014.

The seventh series began on 7 April 2014. Two new regulars were cast - Emma Miller and Riley Uggla. Robbo McCallum and Victoria Gucci joined as supporting cast members. Stephanie Pratt made a surprise return after originally departing the show midway through series six. She returned with her friend Erik Soderbergh. Aurelie Mason-Perez later joined as a friend of Riley. Spin-off series NYC began on 11 August 2014 with four brand new American cast-members. The eighth series began on 13 October 2014 for eleven episodes including a Christmas special. New additions to the cast include Tiffany Watson, sister to existing cast member Lucy.

Francesca Hull departed from the cast in NYC. Hull appeared on the show since Series one.

Royal links

Hugo Taylor has been credited as one of the creators of the show, having originally created a pilot with an almost identical concept for MTV in 2008 before the programme was sold to E4 and Monkey Productions. Hugo had signed up many genuine socialites and high-society members who then dropped out when they realised being on the programme could affect their social standing. Princess Eugenie was being mooted to make a cameo but like many others she pulled out too. In 2008 Hugo was rumoured to be dating Princess Eugenie. He is also known to be friends with Chelsy Davy, the ex-girlfriend of Prince Harry.

Out of the entire Made In Chelsea cast, Oliver Proudlock could be the most well connected among royal circles. As a schoolboy he attended Eton with younger cast members Spencer and Stevie, however he graduated from the famous boarding school in the same year as Prince Harry. Proudlock shares many close friends with the Prince, including Viscount Erleigh (also known as Julian Rufus Isaacs), Arthur Landon and Tom Inskip.

James Matthews, the brother of cast member Spencer, dated Pippa Middleton in 2012. This was actually mentioned in a conversation between Jamie and Spencer during an episode of series 5. Spencer has been quoted in interviews as saying he knows "most of the Royals". He is close friends with Dave Clark, the current boyfriend of Princess Beatrice.

Former cast member Richard Dinan is not only friends with Prince Harry but his cousin Cressida Bonas is an ex-girlfriend of the Prince.

Former cast member Amber Atherton left the show in the third season in order to concentrate on her jewellery business. She has personally sold items to the Duchess of Cambridge.

Series 1 (2011)

The reality-series was announced in April 2011 and billed as "fly-on-the-wall drama". E4 reads "The reality show will follow the lives of globetrotting 20-somethings in South West London, who are among the world's most elite socialites". Filming for the series took place between January and May 2011. The first series introduced cast members Spencer Matthews, Alexandra 'Binky' Felstead, Rosie Fortescue, Mark-Francis Vandelli, Francesca Hull, Hugo Taylor, Catherine 'Caggie' Dunlop, Camilla 'Millie' Mackintosh, Gabriella Ellis and Ollie Locke. The first series full-length trailer was revealed on April 28, 2011. The first series of Made in Chelsea began on Monday 9 May 2011 for eight episodes.

Series 2 (2011)

Filming for series two began in July 2011. New additions to the cast included Louise Thompson, Jamie Laing, and Oliver Proudlock. Other new cast members for series two were Victoria Baker-Harber and daughter of businessman Philip Green, Chloe Green. The series synopsis reads "Expect all the dramas, awkward pauses and priceless quotes from series one plus more incredible parties, holidays and country retreats". On 14 September 2011, the first full-length trailer for the series was revealed. The second series began on 19 September 2011 for eleven episodes including a Christmas Special broadcast on 22 December 2011.

Series 3 (2012)

Filming for series three began in January 2012. New additions to the cast included property heiress, model, actress and fashion designer Kimberley Garner. Other new cast members for series three were Hugo's girlfriend Natalie Joel as well as supporting cast members Karin Joel and Harriet Loder. The series synopsis reads "The beautiful and affluent Chelsea players are back for a third series. Hearts continue to be broken, heels remain high and the only things sharper than their suits are their tongues". This series marks the departure of long-serving cast members Caggie Dunlop and Hugo Taylor as well as supporting cast members Amber Atherton, Gabilicious Tristao and Gemma Gregory. On 20 March 2012, the first full-length trailer for the series was revealed. The third series began on 2 April 2012 for ten episodes.

Series 4 (2012)

Filming for series four began in July 2012 and featured filming locations such as Saint-Tropez and Cannes. New additions to the cast included money-broker and musician Andy Jordan, socialite Stevie Johnson and model Lucy Watson. Other new cast members for series four were Sophia Sassoon, Ianthe Cochrane-Stack, Sam Cussins and Carly Rothman. The series synopsis reads "Chelsea's glitziest twenty-somethings make an eagerly-anticipated return in a new series filled with familiar friendships, heartbreaks and bust-ups.". This series marks the departure of supporting cast member Fredrik Ferrier. On 2 October 2012, the first full-length trailer for the series was revealed. The fourth series began on 15 October 2012 for eleven episodes including a Christmas Special.

Series 5 (2013)

Filming for series five commenced in January 2013. New additions to the cast were Alex Mytton, Phoebe-Lettuce Thompson, Josh Coombs, Tara Keeney and sisters Fran and Olivia Newman-Young. The series synopsis reads "London's glamorous young socialites return for fifth series. Expect more highs and lows as we take a ringside seat through their lives and loves". This series marks the departure of long-serving cast members Ollie Locke and Millie Mackintosh as well as supporting cast members Richard Dinan and Ashley James. On 25 March 2013, the first full-length trailer for the series was revealed. The fifth series began on 8 April 2013 for eleven episodes.

Series 6 (2013)

Filming for series six commenced in July 2013 and continued until November 2013. The first episode synopsis reads "The beautiful people of Chelsea return for a sixth series with drama, parties and heartbreaks. Spencer's new role comforting Louise isn't sitting well with Andy". New additions to the cast include Stephanie Pratt , who appears from episode two onwards. On 7 October 2013, the first full-length trailer for the series was revealed. The sixth series began on 14 October 2013 for eleven episodes including a Christmas Special.

Series 7 (2014)

Filming began on 23 January 2014 and continued until April 2014. New cast members included Riley Uggla and Emma Miller. Emma appears in the first part of the series, whilst two new cast members, Edo and Fordy appear in the second part of the series alongside the aforementioned Riley. Stephanie Pratt returns as a series regular, having already appeared in series six as Spencer's former love interest. Erik Soderbergh joins Pratt for the latter half of the series. Christiane Stinks, Robbo McCallum, Aurelie Mason-Perez and Georgia Toffolo all have minor roles. The series' first full-length trailer was revealed on 20 March 2014, with the cast being depicted as children in a sketch entitled "Mini in Chelsea". The seventh series began on 7 April 2014 for eleven episodes.

NYC (2014)

A new spin-off series, based in New York was announced on 18 March 2014. Filming for the series began in New York in May 2014. Executive producer Sarah Dillistone of Monkey Productions, said: "We're very excited about world of Made in Chelsea travelling to New York. It has a scene buzzing and sophisticated enough to rival Chelsea, so it feels like the natural step. We're going to see the cast out of their bubble for the first time since the show began and I'm sure the result will be nothing like we've seen before." Although the series will clearly be affiliated with Made in Chelsea, it will remain as a stand-alone series and will not be promoted as the show's eighth series. The eighth series will in fact follow in Autumn 2014. On 23 May, it was revealed that main cast members Spencer Matthews, Binky Felstead, Rosie Fortescue, Mark Francis Vandelli, Cheska Hull, Oliver Proudlock, Louise Thompson, Jamie Laing, Lucy Watson, Stevie Johnson, Alex Mytton and supporting cast members Victoria Baker-Harber, Fran Newman-Young, Sam Thompson and Riley Uggla will all appear in New York. Four American cast members were added for the spin-off series, they were fashion blogger Billie Carroll, Alik Yabombom-Downe, international model Jules Hamilton as well as supporting cast member Carson Eisenhart. On 14 July, the series' full-length trailer was revealed and featured main cast members spoofing the nature of fragrance advertisements. The series, (classified under the name Made in Chelsea NYC ) began its run of six episodes on Sunday 10 August 2014.

Series 8 (2014)

Filming for series eight commenced in August 2014. Alik Alfus whom appeared in spin-off series NYC returns for this series. A preview of what the series entails was revealed at the end of NYC's finale episode. All of the cast, including Alex Mytton and Andy Jordan will return. New cast members for this series are Lucy Watson's younger sister Tiffany, Stevie's friend Josh Shepherd and also Alex Mytton's friends Will Colebrook and Lonan O'Herlihy. Furthermore, Stephanie Pratt returns from the fifth episode onwards, having already appeared in series six, seven and NYC. The series began on 13 October 2014 for eleven episodes including a Christmas special. Rick Edwards returns to present the first 2014 End of Season Party episode, due for broadcast on 29 December 2014.

Reception

The series has received mixed reviews from critics and has been heavily compared to The Only Way Is Essex, "The participants are slimmer, sleeker, moneyed and honey-coloured than their Essex counterparts - but some things remain the same". Keith Watson of Metro said, "What is it these fake reality soaps that proves so gruesomely addictive?", and "So there you go, just what you need in your life: pointless people." whilst Digital Spy said "It's all incredibly silly, but we're already falling in love with it a little bit and it will fill a lovely TOWIE-shaped hole for the summer".

The first series of the show was positive with viewers. The show drew 583,000 viewers with its first episode and this figure rose to 624,000 for the second episode with another 117,800 viewers watching the repeat an hour later. It also became the most tweeted show on Channel 4 for 2011.

The first series finale managed to draw in 718,000 viewers on its first showing and was the highest rated show on E4 for the entire day. The series managed a high of 791,000 viewers for its sixth episode.

The show was renewed for a second series before the end of the first. E4′s commissioning editor, David Williams, explained that "the staggering amount of audience engagement has proven it to be a perfect fit for E4′s young audience".

The show managed to trend worldwide on Twitter during the first episode of the second series and carried on trending in the UK for twelve hours after the episode had ended.

The third series broke records for the show when it premiered with over 900,000 viewers and reached over a million viewers for the ninth episode, achieving a series peak.

The fifth series premiered with 956,000 viewers on 8 April 2013. The show was also the highest tweeted programme for that day, with people even tweeting 12 hours before the broadcast of the first episode. The series is so far yet to fall under 800,000 viewers each week, making it the most-viewed series since the show began. The sixth series broke further records on Twitter. MIC and MadeInChelsea were both trending on the micro-blogging site 26 hours before broadcast of the first episode in October 2013. The show's viewing figures continue to grow with over 1.1 million viewers tuning in for the premier of the seventh series in April 2014.

The show won its first BAFTA on 12 May 2013 at the 2013 BAFTAs in the Reality and Structured Factual Category.

Series 7 became the first series of Made in Chelsea to average over 1 million viewers for each episode whereas spin-off series NYC had a series average of over 1 million viewers.

Made in Chelsea: The Game

An official app created by Channel 4 was made available to download in the fourth quarter of 2013. A second version was made available to download for Android and iOS phones on April 3, 2014. The synopsis of the game reads "The Chelsea gang are back in town with a bang, for yet exciting adventures! Enjoy a host of brand new story lines - as you once again play to become the ultimate socialite in the world of BAFTA-winning TV show Made in Chelsea. Party with even of the cast as you rise up the social ladder - with Stevie (your new flatmate), Alex and Fran joining the ranks alongside the likes of Spencer, Proudlock and Binky".

Mad on Chelsea

Mad on Chelsea is an online show discussing the antics having occurred in Made in Chelsea. It is shown on Channel 4's online TV service 4oD. It celebrates all the quirky and funny observations on social media the UK's most glamorous socialites. Series one was presented by stand-up comedian Jenny Beade, who usually greet two of the Chelsea cast to discuss, dissect and deliberate their latest happenings. She get the low down on the fans' reactions to the weekly highs and lows of Chelsea life, as well as exploring the locations seen in the series. The first series corresponded with the beginning of series six, with each episode being made available to view through 4oD.

A second series coincided with Made in Chelsea's seventh series returns, with each episode being uploaded 48 hours before each weekly episode of Made in Chelsea. The show takes a new format; it is no longer presented by Jenny Bede. Instead conversation is led by various cast members. Episode 1 of the second series was hosted by Made in Chelsea's Andy and Spencer, whilst episode 2 featured Prodlock and Lucy, and episode 3 featured Cheska and Stevie.

The online-show did not return for spin-off series NYC, but it will return for the eighth series which is set to begin in Autumn 2014.

Live in Chelsea

With the second series of Made in Chelsea a live spin-off concept called Live in Chelsea (presented by Joel Dommett) was launched. It involves members of the cast taking turns in front a camera to answer questions directly from the audience live. The show is being filmed in secret locations within Chelsea and being shown exclusively through the internet rather than TV – using the ShowCaster platform.

Played in Chelsea

With the sixth series of Made in Chelsea a series of music gigs were launched with cast members presenting them. The gigs were made available for the public to attend through purchasing tickets. Four gigs were confirmed, with them taking place throughout November 2013. E4 reads- Made in Chelsea, the BAFTA-winning E4 show that "has the best soundtrack on TV" (The Guardian) has always used the freshest music around and the series has an extensive following as the place to find the best new tunes on television.To celebrate six series of great music in Chelsea we are launching Played In Chelsea – a season of four gigs on 5th, 10, 20 and 26 November 2013. Staged at Under the Bridge in Chelsea, these gigs will be streamed live on the E4 website as well as being made available as a highlights show later in the week on the Channel 4 catch up platform 4oD. Each night of Played in Chelsea was hosted by two of the Made in Chelsea cast and featured three different bands, all of which have featured on Made in Chelsea.

The Style Network has bought the rights to air the show in the United States, and began to carry it on 12 November 2012 from the first series. In 2012, Canadian-American singer Stacey Jackson appeared in a music video with cast members Spencer Matthews and Binky Felstead which was filmed in New York City. Made in Chelsea currently airs in Australia on the Foxtel Networks owned pay TV channel LifeStyle You.
