Kanika Kapoor (born March 23, 1980) is an Indian playback singer.
Early life and background
Kapoor was born and raised in Lucknow of Uttar Pradesh, India.[1] At the age of 12, Kapoor started to study classical music under Pt Ganesh Prasad Mishra from Banaras and was accompanied by him to a lot of classical concerts all over India. During the time she did a stint with All India Radio and shifted to Mumbai, to work in the music industry.[2] At the age of 18, she got married to Raj Chandok in London. The couple have three children before divorcing in 2012.[3]
Music career
In 2012, Kapoor released her first music video "Jugni Ji", featuring Dr. Zeus. The track went on to become one of the biggest singles of 2012.[4] On hearing the song, Meet Bros Anjjan approached Kapoor to croon for "Baby Doll" in Ragini MMS 2, which was her Bollywood debut song, released in 2014.[2] The song won Mirchi Music Awards for the "Number One Song of the Year" award.[5] The song fetched her several accolades including Stardust Awards for Best female singer.[6] The same year she collaborated again with Dr. Zeus along with Vishal-Shekhar for the song "Lovely" in Happy New Year which was picturized on Deepika Padukone.[7] The soundtrack of the album also includes a Punjabi remix of the song titled "Kamlee".[8] In the year 2015, she collaborated again with Meet Bros Anjjan for the song "Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan" in Roy which was picturized on Jacqueline Fernandez.
Off-screen work
In 2014, she participated in a concert tour across North America, entitled "SLAM! The Tour", in which she performed alongside some of the renowned Bollywood actors including Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone.[9] Apart from concerts and tours, she has also been signed on by a prominent NGO for children, as their brand ambassador, where she promoted the cause of children's education.[10]
