Revival is the second solo studio album by American singer Selena Gomez. It was released on October 9, 2015, by Interscope and Polydor Records[4][5][6][7] as a follow-up to Stars Dance (2013). It is her first album released under her new recording contract with the labels, after completing her contractual obligations with previous label, Hollywood Records, with the compilation album For You and the single "The Heart Wants What It Wants", in 2014. Gomez has cited artists such as Janet Jackson and Christina Aguilera as influences on the record, a pop[8][9] and electronic dance music pop[10] album with a tropical beach pop sound.[11] Lyrically, the album discusses themes of love, heartbreak, and confidence. The album also features a guest appearance from American rapper ASAP Rocky and collaborations with producers such as Rock Mafia, Hit-Boy and Stargate.

Revival received generally positive reviews from critics, who appreciated its overall production and Gomez's vocals. The record debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 117,000 units, making it her second solo consecutive number-one album. Revival performed strongly on international record charts, becoming her fifth top-twenty entry in the United Kingdom, peaking at number eleven, and charting within the top-ten in eleven additional countries. To promote the album, Gomez will embark on the Revival Tour, starting May 6, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The lead single, "Good for You", was a critical and commercial success, debuting at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 and eventually peaking at number five, becoming her highest-charting US single. "Good for You" also charted within the top-ten in Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Greece, Norway, Slovakia and Spain. "Same Old Love" was released as the album's second single on September 9, 2015 and has charted within the top-twenty of the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number eighteen.

Background

In July 2014, the website Mstarz announced Gomez would be releasing a greatest hits album by the end of the year, which would be the last one recorded under management of Hollywood Records.[12] In September, Hits Haily Double reported the singer had signed a deal with Interscope chairman John Janick, after six years with her former label.[13] At that time, Gomez had already sold around 2.8 million albums and 18.1 million singles in the US alone, including three studio albums with her band Selena Gomez & the Scene.[13] Despite these announcements, the contract was not officially confirmed until Gomez herself revealed it on her Instagram account on December 13:[14] The compilation album For You was released as Selena's last record under Hollywood Records on November 24.[14]

Recording

In November 2014, Gomez posted, on her Instagram account, a photo depicting her and Australian singer Sia Furler inside a private jet, with the caption #2015; this gave start to speculations on a possible cooperation of the two in 2015. Previously, Furler had declared to NRJ she had composed some songs for Selena Gomez.[15] In December, the performer confirmed she was recording by publishing some pictures taken in the studio. Under one of them, she stated that she would go on recording for about four months, even at home and in hotels, and that she was excited about what would happen in 2015. Soon after, she posted a photo of her with producer and disc jockey Zedd.[16] After this, the DJ mentioned Gomez on his Twitter account and reported it would be "great to know her" and expressed his congratulations for her "new album". Later, the media began thinking they would have worked together for the album.[17] The rumors concerning Zedd working with Gomez intensified when she posted a photo mentioning him, although she deleted it soon after. On that date, the producer posted a picture of the singer.[18] On January 31, 2015, Gomez revealed during a radio interview that her album would contain 15 songs and that she found it "extremely exciting".[19] She also stated:

I think after four albums, I finally feel a little more like myself than I ever have. I have this confidence and I have a better understanding of what I’m talking about. This is now a point in my life where I have experienced friendships or relationships or travel or exploring, it’s really fun.[19]

Afterwards, the singer revealed that in her new productions she would reflect the "journey" she had during her musical pause period of two years. In this regard, Christina Garibaldi (MTV) speculated the album would be about themes such as her former relationship with Justin Bieber, the period spent in rehab in 2014, the alleged ending of her friendship with Demi Lovato, her life among media and her new relationship with Zedd.[20] Gomez talked about working on her album on a live Q&A with Adidas Neo (via Google Hangout) back in May. She told her fans that she was in Mexico to record the album and was happy with its outcome.[21] On June 22, 2015, Gomez released "Good for You" (featuring ASAP Rocky) as the first single from her album.[22][23] In an interview with Ryan Seacrest in June, Gomez said "there's hints of" her highly publicized breakup with Justin Bieber on the record, but for the most part, it is about her "new-found confidence".[4]

Gomez stated that the album was influenced by a wide range of artists, from Janet Jackson to NSYNC. She stated her main influence for the album was Christina Aguilera, specifically her album Stripped (2002). Gomez stated, "I would buy the copy, read the thank yous, and felt like I knew them. Christina's Stripped was one of my favorites."[24]

Singles

"Good for You" was released as the album's lead single on June 22, 2015.[25] Gomez created anticipation for the release of the single by posting several teasers of the song on Instagram. The song was released to warm critical reception. It debuted at number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100, making it her third top 10 song on the chart and her highest charting debut.[26] "Good for You" has reached number five on the chart,[27] making it her highest charting single. It sold 179,000 downloads in its first week, marking the first time Gomez topped the Digital Songs chart, and becoming her highest first-week sales of any of her songs.[26] The song's video was released on June 26, 2015. In conclusion, the song also topped the US Mainstream Top 40 chart in September 2015.[28]

In early August, Billboard confirmed "Same Old Love" as the second single from the album.[29] On August 5, 2015, Gomez was at the first day of iHeartMedia's Music Summit where she played the song.[5][30] The song was made available for digital download with the pre-order of the album on September 9.[31] The song features uncredited vocals from Charli XCX.[32] The music video was shot in downtown Los Angeles on August 15 and part of it was shot at the Revival event. Fans from the event appeared at the end of the video. The music video was released to Apple Music on September 22,[33] and to Vevo on October 7, 2015.[34] The song has peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 18.[35]

In early October, during an interview with USA Today, Gomez admitted her desire to release "Sober" as a single from Revival "at some point".[36] On October 2, Gomez released "Me & the Rhythm" as a promotional single.[37]

Release and promotion

After Interscope released the first single, Gomez announced the name of her new album would be Revival and that it would be released on October 9, 2015.[38] In a radio interview Gomez gave at The Toby Knapp Show she said that one of the songs on the record is partly inspired by her 2011 hit "Who Says".[39] The album was further promoted when Selena attended the iHeartMedia Music Summit and stated that the title of the album's second single was "Same Old Love".[29] The name of the album and its release date were unveiled via a video on Gomez's Instagram page.[40] On August 27, 2015, Gomez posted many black-and-white video teasers for an upcoming "Revival Event".[41] More contests for the event were held through Z100 Radio and Radio Disney.[42] On September 9, 2015, Gomez revealed the track list for the album by posting a series of tweets and GIFs on Twitter.[43] On October 7, 2015, Gomez released a snippet of each song from the standard edition of Revival.[44]

On October 2, 2015, Gomez confirmed via her social networking accounts that she would embark on the Revival Tour in 2016, touring the United States and Canada from May to July and going overseas later in the year.[45][46][47] The tour dates were revealed on October 5, 2015, through Gomez's official website.[48]

Commercial performance

In the United States, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it Gomez's second number one album after her previous record Stars Dance (2013). It earned 117,000 equivalent album units in its first week (85,000 pure album sales).[49]. It also gave her highest first week sales to date, surpassing her previous record. The album entered the New Zealand Albums Chart at number two, giving Gomez her second solo top ten album and highest charting release to date.[50][51]

Revival received generally positive reviews from critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, it received an average score of 74, based on 9 reviews.[57] Writing for Rolling Stone, Brittany Spanos states: "Revival is an audacious name for a 23-year-old singer's second album, but from start to finish, Gomez earns it. This is the sound of a newly empowered pop artist growing into her strengths like never before."[11] Mike Wass from Idolator wrote, "It’s an immaculately curated collection that showcases the 23-year-old’s ability to genre-hop and experiment, while staying true to herself."[52]

James Reed from Boston Globe gave the album a positive review, saying "She corrects course on Revival, venturing into new sonic territory that reveals an affinity for minimalist dance beats and smoldering R&B grooves."[58] Steve Knopper from Newsday wrote, "something in Selena Gomez's pop formula is nicely soft-spoken and mysterious...the album is frequently dark and ominous, full of torch songs, with just enough stylish electronic dance music synths and upbeat melodies to enliven the mood."[53] Mikael Wood from the Los Angeles Times said, "Far from a scorched-earth rebranding a la Cyrus' 2013 raunchfest 'Bangerz,' 'Revival' turns out to be surprisingly modest, from its midtempo pacing to its thoughtful introspection."[59]

Tim Stack from Entertainment Weekly said, "On her fifth album Gomez goes for mood-setting, and the result is a gripping batch of sultry pop jams that are more 'Netflix and chill,' less 'Let’s hit the curb.'[9] Christina Jaleru from ABC News was positive about the album, saying "On Revival, Gomez continues her foray into a heady mix of electronic dance music pop accessorized with rapping from ASAP Rocky, writing from Charli XCX, soulful pianos, steel drums, and her own chameleon voice, showcasing her pipes in the piano-accompanied 'Hands to Myself' and with warm, rich vocals in the serious yet jubilant 'Revival'."[10] Writing for USA Today, Elysa Gardner said, "The title track announces her musical agenda, with synth sparkling and guitars crunching over a syncopated beat."[56]

Tim Sendra from AllMusic, however, gave the album a mixed review, saying "[Revival] makes for a solid pop album overall, but it's a little too formulaic and predictable to rate among her best work."[8] Emily Mackay from The Guardian also gave a mixed review, saying "The most surprising thing about Revival is its understatement, despite the hit-making co-writers."[54]
