== Removal of maintenance template ==

I've deleted the references for this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorsport_Industry_Association since they were too generic. Should more be added in order for the top template to be removed? It's been there since April 2011 and the team at the MIA are not sure how to rectify the issue.

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)
    • For other types of questions, use the search box, see the reference desk or Help:Contents. If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page.
    • Do not provide your email address or any other contact information. Answers will be provided on this page only.
    • If your question is about a Wikipedia article, draft article, or other page on Wikipedia, tell us what it is!
    • Check back on this page to see if your question has been answered.
    • For real-time help, use our IRC help channel, #wikipedia-en-help.
    • New editors may prefer the Teahouse, a help area for beginners (but please don't ask in both places).

    Collage images

Hi, does anyone know of any active users who make good quality collage images please?--Theo Mandela (talk) 04:09, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Theo Mandela, hello. You could consider leaving a note at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab and/or at Commons:Graphic Lab. Thanks. Lourdes 08:18, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    malicious code found at Landgraviate_of_Hesse-Kassel

    Resolved

There [was] something awry with this article.

this version when checked didn't have any malicious code

this version previously would redirect to https://www.twitch.tv/lrhlive on a mouse click anywhere in the article's text/images.

the diff between versions didn't indicate anything other than an appropriate edit

    What [was] going on?!?

    135.23.232.202 (talk) 08:07, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. I couldn't find any issue with the article. This could be a malicious code on your device rather than in the article, which might be opening a pop-up leading to the external website you're referring to. Thanks. Lourdes 08:20, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    UPDATE:

I edited the page (sometime between 08:07 & 08:20, 12 August 2017 (UTC)); I pasted the old good version then edited the text to reflect the change indicated in the diff. When I saved the page, the problem was fixed, but my edit (including my edit summary) isn't showing in the history (I'm assuming because no differences were detected). Somehow the problem was resolved and whatever malicious code was there is gone and I have no idea how I fixed it. 135.23.232.202 (talk) 08:22, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
    @Lourdes: ping 135.23.232.202 (talk) 08:25, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if you did end up resolving the issue, then well done. If there's anything else you need assistance in, please don't hesitate to ask. Lourdes 08:26, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Lourdes:I am pretty curious as to what exactly was going on. Do you know if there is a record of change to the article other than in the history page? I suspect that the problem might be related to a template in the page and was probably resolved when transcluded again after my edit. Is it possible that if the malicious code is inserted into a template, and then an article containing that template is edited while that template contains the bad code, it could be inserted without appearing in the diff?135.23.232.202 (talk) 08:34, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the resolved tag, because I would still like to solicit wikipedians for additional information if they might happen to have any insight as to what happened (e.g is this a known attack, has it been resolved, etc.) 135.23.232.202 (talk) 08:43, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. While the template thing you mention is possible, I've checked all the templates linked within the article and haven't found anything that could have caused the issue you mention. Other editors might have more information on this. Thanks. Lourdes 08:54, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Lourdes, Thank you for taking the time to respond!!! 135.23.232.202 (talk) 09:00, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

In hindsight, I should have copied the webpage source, but now my browser cache only has the unaffected version. :-( I also checked the internet archive wayback machine and bad luck turns out that the latest archive was literally one day before the 18 June 2017 edit that i suspect triggered the malicious code insertion. (n.b. I suspect the editor that made that edit was acting in good faith and wouldn't have know about the code insertion) 135.23.232.202 (talk) 09:55, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jarkeld:Thank you very much!!! I think it is likely "that someone edited a common template to add malicious HTML code that would cover affected pages with a transparent linked image." The issue may not be fully resolved but my curiosity is. thank you again! 135.23.232.202 (talk) 11:32, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it was vandalism to {{Infobox country/imagetable}}. It has been fixed and the user blocked. If a vandalised template is fixed then there can be a delay before affected pages are updated. A purge of a given page will update it right away. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:56, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How do I fix the infobox Template: Infobox Parapan American Games event NOC output which links to country at the year Pan American Games instead of country at the year Parapan American Games. Thank you in advance GhostOrchid35 (talk) 14:52, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Login error

I am hoping someone can assist. When logging into WP on my iPad I get the following message in a pink box "There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Go back to the previous page, reload that page and then try again." and it won't let me log in. But when I use my PC at work or home, or my IPad in private mode, I am free to log in and all is good. It is just very annoying to have to jump between private mode just to see one website. Any assistance or direction would be greatly appreciated. It has been an issue for several months, just finally reached a level of annoyance to do something about it. --Jordan 1972 (talk) 16:30, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Really confused

    Hello Volunteers,

Thanks for the help you guys are offering, I respect you all for that. At this point, I am really confused as to where should I post my questions. I used the help desk earlier and was told to find an admin on the talk page, I did that, and the admin told me to go to the talk page. I'm sure I'm missing something, but for now, I have the following questions:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Ana_Veciana-Suarez

This is the talk page of an article, that is about my client, it was not written by anybody connected to her. We don't know who wrote it, but whoever did had wrong information posted on it. I have clarified a lot of that. But one fact is still wrong according to Ana, and she has sent me the following correction, can somebody please make it for me?

"This is the WRONG sentence: The Chin Kiss King (Plume, 1998).[3] It was originally published in Spanish as El Rey de Los Besos by Editorial Planeta, S.A. in 1997.

This should be the CORRECT SENTENCE: The Chin Kiss King was originally published in English by Farrar Strauss & Giroux in 1997. It was re-issued in 2015."

This is the first issue, now the second issue is that an admin asked me to do this: "If you are connected to the subject, please make a account and disclose the connection."

But I'm clueless, how to do it? Can you guide me step by step please? Thanks a lot! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.73.122.89 (talk) 21:25, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, to make an account, go here, fill in the details, then click "Create account". You then should disclose your COI, click here to see how to do that. If you want changes to be made to a page, you must include reliable sources (RS) - just saying the article subject says this isn't enough for Wikipedia. Also, please remember that this won't be your page, and while we are glad you wish to help improve the page, please remember the fact that it isn't yours, and you do not have a final say over anything in it. Once you have found some RS's, come back and let us know.  Seagull123  Φ  22:02, 12 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
... or ... You could use these sources here: [2] from the NYTimes and [3] the Washington Post that back your first claim. Then simply cite the paperback release date confirming the second part found in most review sites. I'll go to the talk page and help you out. Cheers! Best practices: how to credit an unconfirmed user for their suggested edit to a semiprotected page?

Is there a recommendation in a policy somewhere about recommended wording for crediting an unconfirmed user in the edit summary of an edit that implements a semi-protected edit request?

A brand new editor has done a good job in a requested edit to a semiprotected page Transgender (see this talk thread). We're still in discussion about user's proposed edit, but it will likely conclude soon, and I will add the user's proposed change to the article. My question is: how do I credit this user properly in the edit summary? I'm thinking of something like: this:

/* Media representation */ On behalf of [[User:Be the change scholar]]: Add comments about increased media visibility, per requested edit at Talk:Transgender#Proposed update to Media Representation.

If there were a policy link or essay about this with a specific recommendation, I'd like to know. Mathglot (talk) 04:03, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Mathglot, which templates might you be referring to? (AFAIK, templates don't function in edit summaries). What you have originally written above seems absolutely fine for your edit summary. Lourdes 11:55, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to edit my article, but i still face some challenges. Please can you point out the lines or paragraph that i should make changes. I tried to read and follow the guidelines of writing article but sill my article has some issues. Please can you assist on what i should do improve my article? Joy Philip (talk) 09:53, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Joy Philip: a phrase such as "is the burning issue" indicates that the writer is not neutral, and is therefore not acceptable in a Wikipedia article. You may believe that saving lives is good, and causing death and disease among young people is bad; but you should not allow this to influence what you write. Maproom (talk) 10:07, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Joy Philip: We already have an article that deals with this subject in a more comprehensive and neutral way. Substance abuse Aspro (talk) 12:04, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Picture Uploading Not Showing

Hi I've been trying to upload a photo of my father, the late Phil White (Mayor) and I've gone through the wizard - posted the file to WikiCommons and it's not showing on the website.

I admit that I'm a novice at this, so your assistance would be greatly appreciated. I just wanted to put the photo in the sidebar with other information.

I also wanted to put a capital "M" for mayor next to his name. We would capitalize a person's title if they were a President, Prime Minister, or Doctor and so I think I need to capitalize that, but the edit feature won't allow me in there. Can you please help with that as well.

Sincerest Thanks! Bryon White — Preceding unsigned comment added by Research Bry (talkcontribs) 12:11, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, you seem to have fixed yourself as it shows up now. Philip White (mayor) Also, might be better to rename as simply Philip White and drop the mayor bit in the title. Can someone do that quickly and without fuss? It then brings the article into line with Category:Mayors of York, Ontario. Aspro (talk) 12:26, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Philip White (mayor) is one of many people listed at Philip White. His article needs a disambiguated title. "(mayor)" in this context is a description of the subject and not a title of the subject. Lowercase is appropriate. We also say Graeme Clark (doctor) and so on. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:52, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK. So we keep it as it is. Aspro (talk) 13:14, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also, for completeness, is it known which member of your family took this photograph or was it taken by one of your father's entourage  ? Aspro (talk) 13:47, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My recent changes to the Berlin Connecticut Railroad Station history page.

Hi, I made some changes to correct some historical inaccuracies in the Early Stations section. I would like to include my references, but I have been unable to do so. I would appreciate any assistance anyone can help me with this subject. Thank You, John DiSarro III — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:252:D78:D0A0:6D14:1B0F:D57D:412A (talk) 15:38, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@2602:252:D78:D0A0:6D14:1B0F:D57D:412A. When you are reading an article and see a references section near the bottom populated by a series of numbered citations, you might think that if you edit the page, you will see those citations typed in that section and be able to edit them. However, usually what you will see is markup similar to this:

    ==References==
    {{reflist}}
    or <references />

In that case, the text of citations is actually in the body of the article, directly next to the first statements or paragraphs the citations support, using <ref>...</ref> tags, which display as Footnotes (e.g.[1][2]) when you are reading an article. The template code shown above in the references section collates and displays all of the citations within the article in a numbered list in which the numbers correspond to the footnote numbers in the text. By clicking on the ^ symbol next to a citation display, you can easily find exactly where in the body of the article the citation text appears in order to edit it. For more, please see Help:Referencing for beginners. I've edited the page so that the reference works, but if you need any more help, let us know.  Seagull123  Φ  17:11, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As a matter of interest, where does the decision on what are listed as "Related articles" at the foot of the mobile view of an article come from? As an example the mobile page https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Handyside_and_Company shows Barton Swing Aqueduct, Outwood Viaduct, and Handyside Bridge as related articles. I can't see anything relevant in the article wikicode. I wondered whether this was something else which comes from Wikidata, but I can't see anything there either. --David Biddulph (talk) 20:14, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's determined automatically by a search function unless a tag is added and I have never seen that. See mw:Extension:RelatedArticles. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:51, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Converting unformatted dates

    Is there a quick of way of converting normal dates such as 17 October 1945 to {{Start date}} format as {{start date|1945|10|17}}. Thanks.--Nevéselbert 20:29, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure I understand exactly what is wanted, but consider the following which use {{extract}}:
    • {{extract|17 October 1945|show=ymd}} → 1945-10-17
    • {{extract|October 17, 1945|show=ymd}} → 1945-10-17
    • {{extract|17 October 1945|show=%Y{{!}}%m{{!}}%d}} → 1945|10|17
    Johnuniq (talk) 22:33, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nevé: I guess you may want exactly the same output as that from {{start date|1945|10|17}}. That is possible, but I would not recommend the following ugliness in an article. If wanted, a discussion could be started on a template talk page about how to get {{start date}} to handle a human-formatted date and you might like to ping me if that happens. If you put the following into Special:ExpandTemplates you will see that the output produced by each line is identical:
    {{start date|1945|10|17}}
    {{extract|17 October 1945|show=%B&nbsp;%-d,&nbsp;%-Y<span style="display:none">&#160;(<span class="bday dtstart published updated">%Y-%m-%d</span>)</span>}}

    The % codes used in show=... are documented at Module:Date. Johnuniq (talk) 07:57, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have since manually converted the dates I wanted done automatically, but thanks anyway for the informative reply. --Nevéselbert 20:35, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Line numbers in diffs

I was asked the question on my talk page[4] and did not have the answer (Help:Diff had nothing):

"when checking out a diff on a very long page, the diff view shows a LINE:# and then a + sign in the margin showing the diff. Let's say it's LINE: 357 - is there a way to find that line in the article view below the diff section? I'm not seeing where the lines are numbered, and can't figure out what purpose the line # has in the grand scheme."

So what good are those line numbers? --Guy Macon (talk) 20:36, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know any on-wiki way to use the line number except getting a rough idea how far into the page it is. The text can be copied to an off-line editor with line numbers but I have never used it for that. To find the location below, I ignore the number and use a browser search to find some pure text from the diff. Specifically in Firefox, I mark a suitable string with the mouse and click Ctrl+C (copy), Ctrl+F (search), Ctrl+V (insert). It only takes seconds but requires a rendered string with no other occurrences. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:18, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
In Firefox, the Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V are not needed. Just select the text and press Ctrl-F. That works in the current tab. If wanting to search in, say, the normal article, you need to do the select and Ctrl-F in the current window (where the selected text is) before doing a Ctrl-Click to open a new tab where you then press F3 to search. The guidance regarding dead links is at WP:Link rot. A template which you can use to tag a dead link is {{dead link}}. --David Biddulph (talk) 23:18, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And to remind you of something which you have been told on numerous occasions, please do not use the same title for a new section as has already been used for previous sections on the same page. Where do you expect the section link #Potternewton to go? --David Biddulph (talk) 23:21, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please help - I find it hard to remove the dead link. I will leave it in. SorrySrbernadette (talk) 23:55, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) No worries, Srbernadette. It was confusing as the preview made it seem as though reference 15 was removed as well; and placing the "dead link" tag made it look like it removed it entirely. It has been fixed! The dead link has been removed. Thanks! Cheers. Maineartists (talk) 00:00, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    removing {{UDP|date=August 2017}}

Hi, How do I remove this template please? I edited the article, placed more ref and cleaned it up. Am 360 (talk) 12:25, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    I presume you're talking about Aaron Frenkel?  Seagull123  Φ  13:10, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Read the template text, This article may have been created or edited in return for undisclosed payments, a violation of Wikipedia's terms of use. It may require cleanup to comply with Wikipedia's content policies. I would advise asking at the talk page of the article to see if other editors think the problems have been removed. I'm pinging @Doc James, who added the tag on 2 August 2017 to see if they can help explain anymore.  Seagull123  Φ  13:16, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The editor concerned was Yinonk. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:36, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
David Biddulph and  Φ  Hi, I have no idea who this is and from another name there, I can see its another editor who is known in Israel or used to be at least... Anyhow, I cleaned the articel up and added more ref, it should be ok now and I also asked David Biddulph to revert back to my edits. It is clear Frenkel should be on wiki and I tried to make the article as best as possible since I dont have more information on him. If you can help more, it will be great. adding a business to the wikipedia page

how do I add my boss's business to the wikipedia history page?

thanks craig — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.36.121.44 (talk) 14:02, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, you will need to give us more information. However, based on your question, you would have a conflict of interest (COI) because you work for the person who owns the business, and as such, you are strongly discouraged from editing about that subject. But if you want someone to write an article about the company, once you've read Your First Article, visit Requested Articles and make a request for someone else to write it, providing reliable sources to prove the company's notability.  Seagull123  Φ  15:06, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Trouble uploading a picture

    Hi,

I am trying to upload a photo and wikipedia is giving me the following error:

We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons.

I believe this photograph meets all the criteria of wikipedia.

This is the only know photo of Andre Monument with its base. The base was blown up in 1885. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_John_Andr%C3%A9_Monument

The photo was extracted from http://gutenberg.polytechnic.edu.na/4/3/7/5/43753/43753-h/43753-h.htm which clearly states on the first page:

The Project Gutenberg EBook of Cyrus W. Field; his Life and Work, by Isabella Field Judson

This eBook is for the use of anyone anywhere at no cost and with almost no restrictions whatsoever. You may copy it, give it away or re-use it under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License included with this eBook or online at www.gutenberg.org/license

Also, this book is not covered by US copyright as it was published in 1896.

How can I upload this photo? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stormdog123 (talkcontribs) 14:32, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Stormdog123, I would suggest asking this at the copyright village pump at Wikimedia Commons. However, I believe that this licence, PD-Gutenberg, may apply to the file you tried to upload. I'll post a note at the copyright village pump pointing to your question here.  Seagull123  Φ  14:59, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
{{PD-Art|PD-old-auto-1923|deathyear=1930}}{{PD-Gutenberg}} would cover all the bases. I'm not sure if the upload wizard allows that, though... could select "Copyright has definitely expired in the US" and then "First published before 1923 and author deceased more than 70 years ago"... then, if so inclined, edit the page manually. Edits by Catharine Smith

    Dear Wikipedia Editors,

My name is Catharine Smith. I am a public information officer with the United Nations and I am responsible for uploading information about high-level UN appointees on Wikipedia. I have had several messages saying that my entries could be a considered a conflict of interest.

    Please clarify.

    Best regards,

Catharine Smith — Preceding unsigned comment added by Catharine Smith (talkcontribs) 19:06, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Catharine, this question has already been answered at your talk page. Please read WP:Conflict of interest, and if necessary, show it to your employers. Maproom (talk) 19:29, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If the UN so desperately needs to use Wikipedia as a platform then perhaps the UN should grant WMF a desk at the UN also, where we can promote our credo too. I can appreciate that it can be a grind and chore to attend all those fine luncheons, spends days away from the family whilst stuck 5 Star hotels and be chauffeured around everywhere and only be allowed to fly in executive class (all paid by the UN)– but someone has to do it! Never-the-less, being a glutton for punishment I here by volunteer to sit on the UN on behalf of the WMF. After all, we have a higher World profile than some smaller UN members. ;¬) Aspro (talk) 22:43, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Catharine Smith. I'm sorry, but you (and presumably the UN) have a misunderstanding about Wikipedia. As far as Wikipedia is concerned, you are emphatically not responsible for editing those articles. Your involvement should be limited to suggesting changes, preferably with references to reliable published sources independent of both the individual and the UN. --ColinFine (talk) 23:05, 14 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Where did my profile on Wiki go?

I am opera singer Korliss Uecker. My profile was posted several years ago by a publicist. IIt was there recently but now is gone. IIt was a lot of work to edit etc. Where is it? Who can I contact? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.113.41.103 (talk) 07:22, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not a social media site that has profiles; it is an encyclopedia which has articles on subjects which are condidered notable, meaning that the subject has been the subject of significant coverage by multiple published reliable sources independent of the subject. If you click on the red link to the article Korliss Uecker you will see that the article was deleted because it was created by a banned or blocked user. --David Biddulph (talk) 07:36, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) It was deleted in December 2016 by admin @JzG:. The article had been created by a blocked user circumventing a block. I just need explain the terminology around here as you've used language that can rile people. It's not "your profile", Wikipedia doesn't have profiles, it has encyclopaedic articles about noteworthy subjects that have been covered in reliable independent sources. No one owns an article here, anyone can (and will) edit an article, the subject has no control over the contents whatsoever and is actively discouraged from editing the article. Also seeing as you said it was your publicist, there are Paid editing and Conflict of interest issues. - X201 (talk) 07:38, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    question

Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection I made a request at this page for protection(Dyslexia), and there are several other editors who have requests as well, is there anyone over there?, thank you--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 12:48, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Ozzie10aaaa, hope you're well. WP:RFPP is well manned and someone will handle your request soon enough. Having said that, I should also mention that with respect to the article you wish protected, as the vandalizing IP editor has already been blocked, there doesn't seem to be an immediate need for protection. But I'll leave it to the responding administrator at RFPP. If there's anything else you need assistance in, feel free to ask. Thanks. Lourdes 14:08, 15 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Removal of maintenance template

I've deleted the references for this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorsport_Industry_Association since they were too generic. Should more be added in order for the top template to be removed? It's been there since April 2011 and the team at the MIA are not sure how to rectify the issue.
