The Incredibles 2 is an upcoming American 3D computer-animated superhero film, and is the direct sequel to The Incredibles (2004). It is in production by Pixar Animation Studios, and will be released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is being written and directed by Brad Bird, the writer and director of the first film, and features Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell and Samuel L. Jackson all reprising their roles. The film is scheduled to be released on June 15, 2018 and will be given an IMAX release.[4][5]

Synopsis

The Incredibles 2 follows the adventures of the Parrs, a family of Supers (humans with super abilities). The Parrs include the father, Bob, also known as Mr. Incredible who possesses super strength, Helen, his wife also known as Elastigirl for the ability to stretch her body, and their children Violet, who can become invisible and project force fields, Dash, who possesses super speed, and Jack-Jack, their infant who can transform into a number of forms. The sequel will start immediately after the end of the first film, according to Pixar's chief creative officer John Lasseter, where the Parrs are just about to face the Underminer.[6]

Voice cast

  • Holly Hunter as Helen Parr / Elastigirl: The mother of the family who has the ability to stretch her body into many shapes and forms.[2]
  • Craig T. Nelson as Bob Parr / Mr. Incredible: The father of the family who possesses super strength and limited invulnerability.[1]
  • Sarah Vowell as Violet Parr: The family's daughter who can project force fields and turn invisible for a certain amount of time.[1]
  • Huck Milner as Dashiell Robert Parr / Dash: The family's first son who possess super human speed. Dash was previously voiced by Spencer Fox in the first film.[1]
  • Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best / Frozone: Bob's best friend, who has the ability to form ice from humidity.[3]
  • Brad Bird as Edna Mode: The fashion designer for the Supers, and also very close friend to the Parr family.[1]

Production

Director Brad Bird first stated on June 29, 2007, prior to the release of Ratatouille, that he was open to the idea of a sequel, if he could come up with an idea superior to the original film: "I have pieces that I think are good, but I don't have them all together."[7] On October 29, 2011, before the release of Bird's Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Forbes reported that Pixar was considering the development of a second Incredibles feature film.[8]

During an interview in May 2013, Bird reiterated his interest in making a sequel: "I have been thinking about it. People think that I have not been, but I have. Because I love those characters and love that world." He continues, "I am stroking my chin and scratching my head. I have many, many elements that I think would work really well in another Incredibles film, and if I can get 'em to click all together, I would probably wanna do that."[9]

At the Disney shareholders meeting in March 2014, Disney CEO and chairman Bob Iger confirmed that Pixar was working on a sequel to The Incredibles, with Bird returning as writer.[10] Later that month, Samuel L. Jackson told Digital Spy that he would likely reprise his role as Frozone in the sequel.[11] In April 2015, Bird revealed to NPR that he had begun writing the screenplay for the sequel.[12]

In May 2015, Bird confirmed that the Incredibles sequel would be his next film following Tomorrowland.[13] He also stated that the film will not reflect trends in the superhero genre since the first film's release, explaining, "I don't think that kind of idea stays interesting for very long. For me, the interesting thing was never the superhero part of it. It was more the family dynamic, and how do superhero things play into that."[14] In August 2015, the sequel's logo was revealed at D23 Expo.[15] In September 2015, Bird revealed his intentions to include in the second film some unused ideas that "didn't fit" in the first film.[16][17] In October 2015, Bird confirmed that Michael Giacchino will return to compose the score.[18]

In November 2016, it was confirmed that Holly Hunter was returning to voice Helen Parr / Elastigirl.[2] On December 15, 2016, Samuel L. Jackson posted a photo on his Instagram page that he had begun recording for the film, confirming he is set to reprise his role as Lucius Best / Frozone.[3] On May 5, 2017, Giacchino confirmed that he had started working with the film's score.[19] On July 7, 2017, first concept art of the film was shown, along with the announcement of the producers.[20] During the 2017 D23 Expo, it was announced that Craig T. Nelson and Sarah Vowell will be reprising their roles as Mr. Incredible and Violet Parr respectively, with Huck Milner casted as the new voice of Dash Parr, replacing Spencer Fox from the previous film.[1] Bird later confirmed that Helen Parr / Elastigirl will be the main character of the sequel.[21]

Release

The film was originally scheduled for theatrical release on June 21, 2019, but the film was moved earlier to June 15, 2018, while its former 2019 release date was taken by Toy Story 4, which was lagging in production compared to this film.[22] On February 22, 2017, The Incredibles 2 was announced to be given an IMAX 3D release as part of Disney's new distribution deal with them.[5]
