Development

Development for a feature film began as early as May 2013, when Marvel had a working-script for a new adaptation of the character, following the studio's re-acquisition of the film rights back from New Line Cinema.[3]

In July 2015, Wesley Snipes, who had played the character in the previous three films, stated that he had discussions with the studio regarding his hopes of reprising the role.[4] In September 2016, Kate Beckinsale revealed that Sony Pictures, through their Screen Gems subsidiary, had approached Marvel Entertainment regarding a Blade-Underworld crossover film. Marvel Studios declined their proposal, given the upcoming plans to implement the character into the MCU.[5] Kevin Feige corroborated this story in October 2016, confirming that studio had declined the proposal because they did not want to work with another studio on the character and decided to keep the film rights with Marvel Studios. In the same interview Feige confirmed plans to bring the character into the MCU, stating that the studio has considered Netflix and ABC Studios television series, though there were no immediate plans with the character.[6] In June 2017, Feige reiterated Marvel Studios' plans to integrate the character into the film franchise, stating that the Blade film series produced by Warner Bros. Pictures had an impact on him during his early days of working at Marvel; noting that the financially successful movies, confirmed to him that various lesser known comic book characters could have successful feature films regardless of an established fan-base. He likened the experience and the insight to the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. After calling the titular hero a "legacy character", he acknowledged once more that there will be movement on the character within the MCU at some point.[7] In August 2018, Snipes revealed that discussions regarding the character had taken place at Marvel Studios for two years at that point, stating that there are two projects in development for the character though they would not be announced nor move forward until Marvel gave them the green-light.[8] Though the actor expressed his interest in portraying the character, Ali was ultimately cast for the MCU reboot.

Pre-production

No further developments on the project had been announced until July 2019, when Marvel announced the film during the annual San Diego Comic Con, with Mahershala Ali cast as the titular character.[9]
