Bombshell is a 2019 American biographical drama film directed by Jay Roach and written by Charles Randolph. The film stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie, and is based upon the accounts of several women at Fox News who set out to expose CEO Roger Ailes for sexual harassment. Actors John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon, Connie Britton, Malcolm McDowell, and Allison Janney appear in supporting roles.

The project was first announced in May 2017 following Ailes's death, with Roach confirmed as director the following year. Much of the cast joined that summer and filming began in October 2018 in Los Angeles.

Bombshell entered into a limited release in the United States on December 13, 2019, before a wide release on December 20, by Lionsgate. The film received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising the performances of the cast (particularly of Theron, Kidman, Robbie, and Lithgow) but criticizing its screenplay and inaccuracies. The film received two nominations at the 77th Golden Globe Awards (for Theron and Robbie), four at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards (Theron, Robbie and Kidman, as well as Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture) and three at the 73rd British Academy Film Awards (Theron, Robbie and Best Makeup and Hair).

Plot

Roger Ailes is the head of Fox News, the primary televised source of conservative news. He runs the corporation with fear and determination and is seen as an icon. The stories of three women employed at Fox are told: Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson, and Kayla Popisil. Kelly is one of the most popular anchors/commentators at Fox and prepares to co-moderate the 2016 Republican debate. The day of the debate, she becomes sick and throws up, but nevertheless questions Donald Trump on the comments he has made about women. In retaliation, he sends out several tweets hurting her reputation, causing others to do the same. Kelly is further ridiculed by reporters and others. One reporter sneaks into their home in order to take pictures of her daughter causing her husband, Douglas, to kick him out by force. When she returns, Fox hires a security detail to protect her and refuses to go after Trump. Ailes, who is a fan of Kelly, becomes paranoid with protecting her and thinks that someone poisoned her the day of the debate.

Meanwhile, Carlson is the co-anchor of the popular program Fox and Friends, but she is taken off and given a slightly worse position on a show less popular. She often faces sexist comments by others on and off air which angers her. She meets with several lawyers who tell her not to engage with these newfound enemies and tell her the story of Rudi Bakhtiar who was fired for coming out against her employer, accusing him of sexual harassment. They explain to her their plan to file a harassment suit against Ailes personally and tell her she will need evidence and have other women come out and say something which Carlson is confident will happen.

Popisil is the newest hire at Fox, a young conservative from a religious background. She starts off working for Carlson, but soon is offered to come aboard and work for The O’Reilly Factor. Carlson asks her to stay with her and warns her to be careful, but she refuses and questions why she shouldn't take the job. On her first day, Bill O’Reilly yells at her and she is consoled by a coworker, Jess Carr. Popisil and Carr both get drunk and sleep together. When they wake up, Popisil explains that she is not a lesbian and is further shocked to find a poster of Democratic candidate for 2016, Hillary Clinton in Carr's possession. She questions Carr on why a liberal lesbian would work for Fox. Carr reveals she applied for many jobs, liked this one, and now she is stuck because no one will hire her after working for Fox. Later, Popisil is invited to Ailes' office but quickly becomes uncomfortable when he makes obscure passes at her. Disturbed, she tells Carr about it, who regretfully tells her she cannot get involved.

Kelly is sent to do an interview with Trump at Trump Tower, but Douglas is disappointed later that she did not grill him harder. Meanwhile, Carlson does a story and reveals that she is in favor of the assault weapons ban, which causes Ailes to have her come to the office. In the elevator, Carlson meets Popisil and Kelly. Meeting with executives, Carlson is fired and when she asks why, they do not give her a clear answer. She then decides to sue Ailes, which causes distress among Fox and its workers. Ailes meets with his wife Beth, attorneys Susan Estrich and Rudy Giuliani, and he denies the allegations. Fox calls in all of its female staff and ask that they stand with the corporation, which most of them do, saying they have never been sexually harassed. Kelly, however, does not give an answer, and reveals to her employees that when she was first hired by Fox, Ailes sexually harassed her. Gil Norman, She reveals that she wants to remain quiet at this point, despite Fox constantly asking her to support Ailes.

When the lawsuit breaks, no other women at Fox come out, which disappoints Carlson, who believed surely other women would come forward. She does find people who say Ailes did harass them, but before Fox, which does not help her. The people watching also turn on Carlson. Kelly wants to come out with it, but does not want to be the only one and starts to look for other women willing to speak out. Determined to find some, she goes hunting and finds several: all sexually harassed by either Ailes, O’Reilly, or some other male at Fox. Kelly meets with Popisil and asks her if Ailes did harass her. Popisil says yes but questions Kelly on why she did not come forth when it happened and won't come out now. Kelly explains because it wasn't her job to do so.

While out on a date, Popisil calls Carr and asks if she did call Kelly and give her name to her. Carr confesses she did because she was worried about her and Popisil tearfully confesses that she was willing to obey Ailes for fear over her career, and tells Carr she thinks she wants to come forward. Meanwhile, Kelly comes forward and learns 22 other women will be doing the same. Estrich comes to Ailes and reveals Carlson has video evidence of recorded conversations with them that will win them the case and that they wanted him to deny the allegations to prove he was lying. Ailes meets with his old friend and co-creator of Fox, Rupert Murdoch, who reveals that he will be fired and talks about the future of the network. Ailes asks to break the news to everyone himself, but Murdoch does not allow it. While speaking at the RNC, Kelly receives a call that Ailes has been fired. Popisil also gets the news and tells Carr she should come out which at first it looks like she will, but when Murdoch enters the room, she refuses. Murdoch explains that he will be taking over Fox. Popisil knows that she will be fired and instead quits which makes Carr happy.

Meanwhile, Carlson receives a large settlement of $20 million and an apology from the network, surprising her. Her lawyers tell her that she cannot tell her story as it is part of the deal which she is hasty about and she tells her audience that she does not care if they like her, but that they believe her.

Development

On May 18, 2017, it was announced shortly after the death of former Fox News founder Roger Ailes that Annapurna Pictures was in the early stages of developing a film centered on the allegations made against Ailes by female employees, including Megyn Kelly and Gretchen Carlson. Charles Randolph was expected to write the film's screenplay.[8] On May 22, 2018, it was announced that Jay Roach had been hired to direct the film.[9] On August 1, 2018, it was announced that Roach, Randolph, Beth Kono, AJ Dix, and Margaret Riley would act as the film's producers and that Denver and Delilah Productions would serve as the film's production company.[10] On October 9, 2018, it was announced that Annapurna Pictures had dropped out of producing the film, reportedly due to concerns over the film's growing budget. At the time of the announcement, it was confirmed that Bron Studios was staying on board the film and that producers were reportedly looking at Focus Features, Participant Media, and Amblin Entertainment to potentially help finance the film.[11] The following week, Lionsgate began negotiating to join the production after Focus Features and Amblin Entertainment passed on the project.[12] By the end of the month, Lionsgate was reported to be closing a deal to distribute the film.[13] In December 2018, it was reported that Theodore Shapiro would compose the film's score and that Barry Ackroyd would serve as the film's cinematographer.[14][15] The film was initially given the working title Fair and Balanced before being announced as Bombshell in August 2019.[16] Kelly later stated that she had no involvement with the film.[17]

Casting

Alongside the directing and writing announcements, it was reported that Charlize Theron had entered negotiations to portray Kelly in the film.[9] On August 1, 2018, it was reported that Nicole Kidman had begun negotiations to star as Carlson and that Margot Robbie was in talks to play a composite associate producer at the network, with Theron confirmed to star.[10][18] Later that month, it was announced that John Lithgow had been cast as Roger Ailes.[19] In September 2018, it was reported that Allison Janney had been cast as lawyer Susan Estrich and that Kate McKinnon had been cast to play a fictional producer.[20][21]

In October 2018, it was announced that Malcolm McDowell, Mark Duplass, and Alice Eve had been cast as Rupert Murdoch, Douglas Brunt, and Ainsley Earhardt, respectively.[22][13] In November 2018, it was reported that Brigette Lundy-Paine and Liv Hewson had been cast as two fictional characters[23] and that Alanna Ubach,[24] Elisabeth Röhm, Spencer Garrett, Connie Britton, Ashley Greene, Brooke Smith, Michael Buie, Nazanin Boniadi, and Bree Condon had been cast as Jeanine Pirro, Martha MacCallum, Sean Hannity, Beth Ailes, Abby Huntsman, Irena Brigante, Bret Baier, Rudi Bakhtiar, and Kimberly Guilfoyle, respectively.[25][26][27][28][29][30] In December 2018, it was announced that Rob Delaney had joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role and that Ahna O'Reilly had been cast as Julie Roginsky.[31][32] In June 2019, Robin Weigert announced she had joined the cast of the film.[33]

Filming

Principal photography for the film began on October 22, 2018, in Los Angeles, California.[34][35]

Release

The film was scheduled for release on December 20, 2019.[36] However, it was pushed up a week to December 13, 2019, in a limited release opening wide a week later on December 20.[37]

Reception

Box office

In its limited opening weekend the film made $312,100 from four theaters for a per-venue average of $78,025, the fifth best of 2019.[38] The film went wide at 1,480 theaters the following weekend and, despite being projected to gross around $10 million, finished sixth with $5.1 million. The audience was 58% female, with 60% being between 18-34 years old.[39] The following weekend the film made $4.7 million (a total of $8.3 million over the five-day Christmas frame), falling to ninth.[40] The film's box office results were seen as a disappointment, with The Hill saying that the presence of other projects about Ailes, such as the documentary Divide and Conquer: The Story of Roger Ailes and the Showtime series The Loudest Voice, had lowered the demand for a film on the subject.[41] Forbes also noted that audiences likely do not want to "shell out movie theater money and time to watch a film about women being treated terribly by powerful men... especially (generally speaking) women".[42]

Critical response

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 67% based on 213 reviews, with an average rating of 6.69/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "Bombshell benefits from a terrific cast and a worthy subject, but its impact is muffled by a frustrating inability to go deeper than the sensationalistic surface."[43] Metacritic, another review aggregator, assigned the film a weighted average score of 65 out of 100, based on 44 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[44] Audiences polled by PostTrak gave the film an average 4 out of 5 stars, with 70% saying they would definitely recommend it.[39]

Megyn Kelly, following a private screening shortly prior to the film's release, said that the film was an "emotional experience" for her, but noted inaccuracies. On January 9th 2020, she published a video titled Megyn Kelly Presents: A Response to "Bombshell" - Full Discussion on her YouTube Channel, in which her and other people who lived it, Juliet Huddy, Rudi Bakhtiar, Julie Zann and Kelly's husband Doug Brunt, sit down right after the screening to talk about their experience, such inaccuracies mentioned above and the effect the sexual harassment has had on their lives and careers.
