Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (transl. Taarak Mehta's Inverted Spectacles) is an Indian Hindi language television sitcom, based on the weekly column called Duniya Ne Undha Chasma by Taarak Mehta in Chitralekha. One of India's longest running television shows, it is produced by Neela Tele Films.[2] It premiered on 28 July 2008 on Sony SAB.It is one of the longest running Indian sitcom.

Summary

The series takes place at the Gokuldham Co-operative Housing Society, an apartment complex in Powder Gali, Goregaon East, Mumbai and centers around the members of Gokuldham Society. The Gada Family consists of a successful businessman Jethalal Champaklal Gada, who owns "Gada Electronics", his father Champaklal, his wife Daya Gada and their naughty son Tipendra "Tapu" Gada, who is the leader of his friend circle called "Tapu Sena"(Tapu's Army).

Getting fed up of regularly hearing the complaints of the society members, especially his neighbour Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide about the menace created by his son, Jethalal decides to call his father Champaklal to keep an eye on Tapu, but the opposite happens, and he joins hands with Tapu. Most of the episodes are based on Jethalal being stuck in a problem and Taarak Mehta, his best friend whom he calls his "Fire Brigade" helps him out of it.

The show covers topical issues that are socially relevant. The residents of Gokuldham face daily life problems and find solutions for it but with a moral value in a hilarious manner. Although Gokuldham Society consists of 50 flats the show mostly focuses on the lives of the families, that are of; Jethalal Champaklal Gada, an Electronic shop owner from Bhachau; Taarak Mehta, Jethalal's best friend and a famous writer from Rajasthan; Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide, Gokuldham Society's only secretary, and a tutor from Ratnagiri; Dr. Hansraj Hathi, an overweight doctor from Bihar; Krishnan Iyer, a junior scientist from Chennai but has a Bengali wife, Babita Iyer on whom Jethalal has a crush; Roshan Singh Sodhi, a Punjabi garage owner from Punjab having a Parsi wife also named Roshan Sodhi and Popatlal Panday, a bachelor journalist from Bhopal, a news reporter from Toofan Express. They always help each other in their problems, to promote Unity in Diversity.

The members of Gokuldham celebrate all the festivals together like a family-like Ganesha Chaturthi, Janamashathmi, Independence Day, Diwali, Navratri, New Year, Christmas, etc and organises various events. The responsibility of organising these events is often on "Tapu Sena's" arms.

The shooting happens in film city, Mumbai. Some parts of the show have also been shot for that time storyline in places such as Gujarat, New Delhi, Goa and in overseas locations such as London, Brussels, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore.[44][45][46][47]

From March to June 2020, filming shut down in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown in India [48]. The show started broadcasting its new episodes from 22 July 2020 at 8:30 pm[49]

I approached every channel, but the trend of daily soaps had just started, and saas-bahu shows dominated the scene. Whoever I approached said there was no scope for comedy every day. But I had a feeling that one day comedies, too, would become a daily trend. Finally, in 2008, Taarak Mehta... came on air."[51]

In February 2015, Joshi, Vakani, and Lodha hosted the red carpet at the 60th Britannia Filmfare Awards to promote the Clean India campaign.[52]
