Class and Importance intersection

This feature is now available at each workgroup level. See Category:Stub-Class Tamil Nadu articles of High-importance. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:24, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

It is available for topics that use field parameter too. See Category:Stub-Class India (food) articles of High-importance. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:26, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Yes. Thanks Ganesh, these intersections are very important in identifying the more importance / low quality articles and to improve them. It will also help to identify possibly wrong importance new articles. -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 04:24, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

thumbs up Great! Looks like our efforts to maintain India related articles have succeeded. Even Supreme Court makes use of the information. But is it legal? :-)) --gppande «talk» 11:00, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Another interesting link: Release version

This page lists India-related articles that were selected for the release version. It would be great if we can focus on these and convert them to FAs. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 14:03, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Good info. First of all, there are some start-class articles in the list.--GDibyendu (talk) 14:33, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Right, on what basis are the articles selected? Score, hit count, inter wiki, importance? Whatever we write here might be taught to young minds in some school. Be careful guys ... --gppande «talk» 15:34, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
See Work_via_Wikiprojects/Archive_4#Multiplication_scale| for the algorithm. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 16:04, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
I have added the list to WikiProject India/Release version. It is very cool to sort the list based on hitcount. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 15:55, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Nice work there, Ganesh! It's much easier now to check the selected articles. Mspraveen (talk) 16:47, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, nice. But what is the time duration for hit count? I guess it must be whole of 2008 till day. --gppande «talk» 07:38, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Current Proposed Comments

Bangladeshi categories and its articles are removed from falling under this project, unless its literature is Indian, in which case it falls under the appropriate category.

Why should "Category:Sahitya Akademi Award recipients in Assamese" fall under Bengali literature? --Ragib (talk) 06:07, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Typo - fixed now. Ncmvocalist (talk) 06:16, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Wikipedia guidelines discourage creating category for award winners. Arman (Talk) 08:46, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
They already existed so I didn't bother. We might as well delete that category. Ncmvocalist (talk) 09:01, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
I feel that Category:Sahitya Akademi Award recipients should be retained as it is the most important literay award in India -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 09:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
OK - if there is a famous award from other WikiProjects that use award categories (like the Academy Awards), then we can reconsider, but otherwise, I think the guideline in relation to this might be better to follow. Ncmvocalist (talk) 13:12, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
There are categories for scores of literary awards under Category:Writers by award. GDibyendu (talk) 16:34, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
We can keep Sahitya Akademi Award recipients then. Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:11, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Does the proposed Bengali writers refer to Bengali-language writers or Bengali-ethnicity writers?--Regents Park (roll amongst the roses) 16:36, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

It refers to Bengali-language writers (of Indian literature). For people who are from Bengal (writers or otherwise), it should be limited to the category of People from Bengal India to avoid overcategorization. Ncmvocalist (talk) 16:39, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Perhaps the language categories should be renamed to ensure that there is no confusion with ethnicity. This is especially true for Bengali (ethnic) writers where there are many Bengalis writing in other languages. A return to Bengali (language) writers perhaps?--Regents Park (roll amongst the roses) 17:12, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Agreed - it should be renamed. Currently, the articles in those categories are kinda mixed up so we may need to deal with that before sending in the changes. Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:15, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
I have one suggestion that the above parent categories like Category:Bengali literature need not be part of Category:Indian literature by language, in fact there is no clear need of this last category as all categories like Category:Bengali literature are subcategories of Category:Literature by language, which is good enough. And other than Category:Indian literature by language there is no nationality-oriented subcategory under Category:Literature by language. I hope that people will agree with logic. GDibyendu (talk) 17:00, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
No, we're keeping (and dealing with) Indian stuff here. Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:12, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
Actually, we are discussing this in a different thread above, and pointing out the problem with mixing language based and nationality based categories. I think GDibyendu's points are logical. --Ragib (talk) 17:17, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
We're specifically dealing with Indian literature, so the category will remain - but I should've been clear: I'm not concerned if it is removed as a subcategory from Literature by language though (obvious it doesn't belong there). Ncmvocalist (talk) 17:28, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
If that is what you are thinking, then why do you propose to merge Categories of Bangladeshi poets with Category of Bengali poets? Bangladesh is a country and not part of India. If we agree to make these literature categories language-wise, then we need to remove nationality from them. Surely, there are Urdu poets in Pakistan, Tamil poets in Sri Lanka and Bengali poets in Bangladesh. GDibyendu (talk) 17:48, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
I have not suggested Bangladeshi poets merge with Bengali poets - I've completely removed the category of Bangladeshi poets so that they do not fall under this project (they belong in the categories of the Bangladeshi project - we are specifically keeping literature that is Indian for the purposes of this WikiProject). I haven't finished the listing - it's only a few of several so far. Ncmvocalist (talk) 01:05, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

Can someone find a way to shorten the width of this to match the thumbnails of images? Thanks Nikkul (talk) 02:13, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

I am not sure if this can be done, but the problem is there is no fixed width for images too. Sometimes images are in landscape format(horizontal) and sometimes in portrait format(vertical). --gppande «talk» 06:57, 25 June 2008 (UTC)
It can be easily done by incorporating the width CSS parameter in the style section of the table. I, however, don't think it would serve any purpose, because a)hard-coding table sizes in pixels or in % may affect readability on different browsers/screen resolutions, and b)As User:gpande points out, not all image thumbnails on Wikipedia are of the same dimensions. AreJay (talk) 05:31, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

I have just undone some text that somebody had added to the bottom of the article on him. Even though I have no particular knowledge of this topic, it was obvious vandalism. The section began "He was a corrupt & extremely arrogant man who was filling his pockets. . ." It had been added by 68.105.197.8 on June 28, 2008. I hope someone who is more informed and not too partisan will keep an eye on this article. Iris-J2 (talk) 02:40, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Terrible merge proposal on Indies

Please note Talk:Indies#Merge discussion.

This ought to be brought to the attention of the India Wikiproject because there's a complicated merge tag up on several different articles. Indies is just one of them; it also comprises Indianized kingdom, Greater India, and Undivided India, not to mention the Indian subcontinent, which I'm particularly interested in preserving as a term of special interest to geologists. I've got a lot of other things to say about this, but I've already said them on Talk:Indies and Talk:Indian subcontinent. --arkuat (talk) 07:00, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

Dalit section

the dalit section of wikiproject india is incredibly inaccurate. there are a lot of misconceptions. i really want to be incharge of the dalit section because my great great gradfather was in some ways a dalit. there are a lot of inaccuracies in the article. i have added a couple of changes in the article, still a lot more changes need to be made. also i dont feel that majority of the references were correct (there are inaccurate articles written by journalists and others who have no idea about indians).

even the caste system of india section was not good. for some reason people want to demonize indians yet no one would ever talk about caste system in ancient egypt and how badly the slaves were treated, or how badly the peasants were treated in english kingdoms etc. anyway i understand that the section deals with indians only.

i would really want to be in charge of the dalit section of wikiproject india i feel that i can give a better understanding to foreigners about dalits. the article needs a lot of changes. could you give me a chance at moderating the dalit section of wikiproject indian?? thanks

pls let me know my email address is 100hahaha@gmail.com Arjuna316 (talk) 20:54, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

If you feel that there are inaccuracies in the Dalit article, go ahead and make changes (assuming that you're willing for your writing to be edited mercilessly and copied freely). Template:WP India

Template:WP India (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) has been updated to create intersect categories, such as Category:FA-Class West Bengal articles of unknown-importance (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (8 members). This is not a normal feature of WikiProject templates, it has created a lot of unnecessary entries in Special:WantedCategories. The information can be gotten other ways. Can I suggest that the template (and the Indian TV one) shouldn't do this. Such categories, if created, are pretty much certain to be deleted at CfD. Best to all, Angus McLellan (Talk) 22:07, 27 June 2008 (UTC)

What other ways are you referring to?
  1. Category intersection is still in development.
  2. WP1.0 lists are not as convenient as accessing categories.
  3. WP1.0 bot does not have this feature. I have requested for it here. Carl is going to work on the bot enhancements in July.
  4. These categories help us with assessment tables such as this.
Once the category intersection is implemented and can replicate this requirement, we will go ahead and remove this from our template. I will make sure these categories are created soon so that they don't show up on the WantedCategories page. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further clarification. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 22:39, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
You don't need a dynamic list of intersects for maintenance purposes: there's no reason why it must be bang up to date at all times. You don't need poorly designed templates which throw up dozens, more likely hundreds, of red-linked, sure-to-be-deleted-if-created, categories. To create an intersect between, for example, Category:Stub-Class West Bengal articles and Category:Unknown-importance West Bengal articles is as simple as this. Anyone with basic scripting skills could generate the reports. You don't need a bot. A shell account would be handy, but even that isn't essential. Angus McLellan (Talk) 14:02, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Your simple search is not working. It shows a red-link..that is all. It does not intersect at all. Basically, I would like a feature that intersects two categories and shows the merged category. Please let me know what I am doing wrong. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 15:48, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Kushal Pal Singh - NPOV? Importance?

Hi. I have not much knowledge on India-related topics. The article Kushal Pal Singh has been subject of several POV-edits and is pretty POV currently. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:42, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Quick poll

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.

There are problems with the new changes I think, but some parts that are worthy of consideration. Nevertheless, no changes will be adopted before 2009 as indicated when asked at the drive (although, whether the changes will be adopted or whether the system will remain as is, is a decision we will need to make prior to 2009 - so sometime this year).

Until then, certain members (& new members) of the assessment dept. (whom will receive an email from me towards the conclusion of the drive) will be looking closely at certain areas. After a specified period of time, each person will make recommendations on the merits of the proposal(s) they looked at, before we make a decision one way or another (through a poll), on what we will be adopting. requesting help with PIE religion page

This is about the Proto-Indo-European religion page. The page keeps getting vandalized by bigots any time it says anything about Hinduism on it, and any time it says anything about Christianity on it. I know this might off topic for India in particular, but I am not a Hindu (I'm American) so I am actually trying to get some correct information on the page that at least would be in accord with what Hindus think (I have tried but I'm not sure I am right). The page is currently being vandalized by David Bachmann who has referred to Hinduism as a "religion of animal slaughter" and by several netkooks. Anyway, if anyone could or would help I would appreciate it very much. 71.32.223.31 (talk) 21:57, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Pasrur needs to be rewritten

Reposted from Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Punjab to get more exposure. I had to remove most of the content of Pasrur due to suspected copyright violations. Could someone familiar with Pasrur please write a decent, well-sourced, original article on the subject? Thanks. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 23:14, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

A band of socks using open proxies has brought their yahoogroups battle to Keshub Chunder Sen and other Brahmo Samaj related articles, rewriting the articles to promote their distinct POV. They have attempted to expose the real-life identity of a well-respected admin (User:Ragib), and have now coerced the retirement of a long-time editor (User:P.K.Niyogi ) with their personal attacks. They don't appear to be going away anytime soon, and these articles could use some help. To learn more, see Talk:Keshub Chunder Sen and Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Ronosen. thanks, priyanath talk 15:42, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Oh, this is really bad. The contributions of User:P.K.Niyogi to India articles is really very appreciable. I really wish him to return back to Wikipedia. My personal experiences with User:Ragib was very good and found him of highly dignified and understanding person ... -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 17:23, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

This was a bad experience for me. One user (caught using open proxies per a checkuser) went so far as to dig up my personal websites and post them in talk pages. (and with veiled comments regarding my personal photos too). He spent several days trolling through my website (as usual, through his zombie machines). For his stalking, I had to request Jimbo to remove a picture of Bengali Wedding (that I donated to WP) ... the stalker was referring to that image and also my other personal details. I later found out their off-wiki yahoo groups, where they have been discussing Wikipedia articles since earlier this year!! (no wonder the trouble they caused at Rabindranath Tagore (regarding the Pirali connection, as well as at Keshub Chunder Sen).

So, guys, please keep an eye on these articles. Most of the anon/new users of the page are very likely to be a single person, using a lot of open proxies and zombie machines. --Ragib (talk) 23:10, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

This is the dark side of "Anyone can edit". I am astonished to know that even administrators are left helpless to prevent propaganda seekers from not only harming the articles but also harming the administrators themselves. I am sure, there are admins who can track and block numerous proxy accounts of a single person and their help was taken in this case.
But, I would like to say, why not bring such a serious case to the notice of the WikiProject India? Why wait so long as noted users like P.K. Niyogi decide to quit WP. It's a loss to everyone. Wikiproject India is too big, not all articles can be patrolled by our small but active list of community members. So any confrontation, edit war, etc.... should be listed here before it gets out of hand. Just call for help. --gppande «talk» 08:02, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
Indeed it's unfortunate. I posted here immediately upon seeing the attacks against P.K. Niyogi. User:Gayatrisavitr is continuing to add his group's POV at Keshub Chunder Sen at this very moment, so I request people to watch those pages and editors to prevent even more harm. priyanath talk 18:01, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm at 3rr for the day, deleting POV nonsense from User:Gayatrisavitr. Unless other editors get involved, this gang will have the article to themselves. priyanath talk 19:04, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Absolutely despicable! How some people can stoop to such levels just to push their agenda I'll never know. I hope User:P.K.Niyogi, time and health permitting, will return and continue his commendable contributions to Wikipedia. AreJay (talk) 20:10, 7 July 2008 (UTC)
PK Niyogi is a top-notch Wikipedian. He should not leave Wikipedia. This is an emergency. Admins please jump in. KnowledgeHegemonyPart2 12:58, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for bringing this to attention. I'm watching this article. Please elaborate on the other articles that face POV. Mspraveen (talk) 15:41, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
Keshub Chunder Sen seems to be the main focus for edit-warring right now. I've just finished consolidating and removing much of the POV material from the article, which means of course that it will need watching. Various editors seem to think that 'neutral' means 'balancing' the article by adding long sections that include their respective POVs, which means certain events are given extreme undue weight as a result. The article really needs a through rewrite, using reliable and neutral sources. Much of it is sourced by books from opposing Brahmo groups. Note: I have no involvement or interest in Brahmo Samaj, but am interested in various biographies from that era. thanks, priyanath talk 18:57, 8 July 2008 (UTC)
Update After more edit-warring, Keshub Chunder Sen was fully protected. Soon after, another RCU on the blocked User:Ronosen found 15 of his sockpuppets, including all of the four editors who were disrupting the article (User:Bengalibaboo, User:Gayatrisavitr, User:Lillycottage, User:Worklikeadog) - see Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/Ronosen. Once it comes out of protection, the article will still need editors willing to get involved, since I'm not going to be doing much more there. I think the article is important enough to deserve more serious attention from editors involved with WikiProject India. thanks, priyanath talk 17:20, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

Creation of Wikiproject pages is complete. Once the categories are done, I will start the tagging. -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 07:14, 19 June 2008 (UTC)

Neat stuff! Great work, Tinu! Mspraveen (talk) 04:46, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Ganesh for creating the WP 1.0 assessment categories and changes in the {{WP India}} banner. With his new plugin for creating categories , I was able to also have handson by creating some of the categories for the union territories . Except the initial tagging for the workgoup articles , everything is complete -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 07:40, 21 June 2008 (UTC)

Thanks a lot to Amartyabag for working on tagging for the newer workgroups -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 11:35, 27 June 2008 (UTC)
Amartyabag, can you work on the 2 remaining two workgroups also, I am busy with some other bot task recently. For Jand K, plz do carefully , as it may catch some opposition -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 07:02, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I have tagged almost half of the Delhi articles and hope i will do the rest in a few days, i think i will not be able to do J&K due to academic commitments. Moreover i am tagging the WP:INOR articles. Amartyabag TALK2ME 02:35, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

I can volunteer to make it if somebody else also supports. -- Tinu Cherian - 09:24, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
You are welcome. Things to do.
  1. Create Wikipedia:WikiProject Indian media Project Page (Eg:Wikipedia:WikiProject Puducherry )
  2. Add workgroup parameters in the WP:INDIA Banner template {{WP India}}.
  3. Create Category Tree for WP 1.0 Assessments
  4. Add link and WP1.0 Article stats switch paramter of the new workgroup in {{WPIndia Navigation}}.
  5. Tag Articles with {{WP India}} with the new workgroup parameters.
  6. Run WP 1.0 Bot manually to collect new workgroup information.
  7. You are done !!!

Step1 should be easy for you. Step2, you need an admin to edit {{WP India}} . Contact Ganeshk. The rest of steps, I can help you if the previous ones are completed...-- Tinu Cherian - 05:28, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

During current assessment drive, a number of articles were marked with field=media, using field-parameter of WP India template. Please check the Categories for the same in talk pages, if you are interested to do so. Just an FYI. Regards. --GDibyendu (talk) 17:09, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
This is way to confusing for me... Would appreciate it if you could walk me through both. WP Bot? where can I find it? how do I use templates and fields? is there an automation available (like AWB) etc.

WP 1.0 Assessment Categories creation with bot

Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/TinucherianBot 4 and Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard#Wikipedia:Bots.2FRequests_for_approval.2FTinucherianBot_4 . FYI.. I guess this will make our work easier in WP 1.0 Assessment Categories creation with the bot. -- Tinu Cherian - 05:11, 19 July 2008 (UTC)
