Hello Nlu. Yuanling left Shanghai when she was 5 years old. Do you really think that the category "Businesspeople from Shanghai" is warranted in her case? I suppose she did not make any business at toddler's age in the regard that's required by this category... Cheers, --Gereon K. (talk) 20:28, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I tend to think that she's still a businessperson from there; it doesn't require that the business to have been conducted there... --Nlu (talk) 20:50, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Having lived in Canada after the her 5th year she is more Canadian than anything. I was born in a neighbour city because my city did not have a hospital. Does that make me a Wikipedia of the neighbour city? Rather not. --Gereon K. (talk) 21:01, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I understand your thoughts. I respectfully disagree, because being "from" Shanghai does not make her not a Canadian. I am not saying that your position is not a reasonable one. --Nlu (talk) 15:22, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Nlu. Have you found something about it? --80.181.182.188 11:50, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Right now I just don't think I have the bandwidth for it. Sorry. Things may or may not change once I go on a six-week leave starting next week - depending how it is dealing with baby. --Nlu (talk) 15:59, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If I recall correctly, I once read in a Internet site that the name "Geng Zhou" is sculpted in a wall of the Great Wall, and he was a stonecutter. Unfortunately, that site was canceled. --79.20.232.62 13:51, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, but still busy (or perhaps even busier than at the last time we talked). --Nlu (talk) 16:35, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Have you time now, after over three months. --87.15.52.139 (talk) 27 October 2020 (UTC)
Between baby, COVID-19 (no, I didn't get it, just with all the accompanying issues), and work, not really. And, again, this is not really my area of expertise. (Anything that is Song or later really isn't.) --Nlu (talk) 02:24, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Have you found something? --87.2.66.113 (talk) 10:07, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't. As mentioned, this is not really my area of expertise, and so I have little to go on besides the official history (History of Ming), which don't really have much detail. --Nlu (talk) 22:09, 26 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question for you

Please see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection#Prostitution_in_North_Korea, are you okay with unprotection? Is there any chance of further harm? Is the targeting vandal gone? --217.113.241.188 (talk) 21:46, 30 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are right, and I'll unprotect it. I don't know if the targeting vandal is gone - but we can always reprotect if he/she/it comes back. --Nlu (talk) 02:25, 31 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Assist with vandalism on article "Prostitution in South Korea" by likely sockpuppet of China-proti

Hello. Can you please help with some of the vandal activities on this page? There appears to be two ppl who have been using sock puppets to get POV into edits. One's edits have been reverted. The other one, Marryhence should be sockpuppet of Bablos939, and also highly likely to be Chinese-proti who you have dealt with in the past. Their specific edits can be found in the Foreign prostitutes in South Korea section and Chinese subsection. The edits insist things like "The South Korean newspaper “The Dong-a Ilbo” reveals that sex workers in the so-called “휴게텔” are all composed of Chinese women" when the source article clearly doesn't say that. Whenever the articles are reverted, these sock puppets will simply insert the same narratives over and over again.

A request to investigate this has been opened here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Bablos939

The same person has also been trying to push similar POV in other articles:

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Prostitution_in_Sri_Lanka&diff=prev&oldid=945218988 https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Prostitution_in_Malaysia&diff=prev&oldid=945026534

I have spoken with admin RoySmith who also watches this article. He has reverted another sockpuppet Rajmaambut's edits but when I brought up Bablos939 he has indicated that this is a content issue and should be a matter to settle between editors. Since you have already dealt with Chinese-proti, I am hoping that you can help to investigate this matter and rever the changes Marryhence/Bablo939/Chinese-proti has made. Also if you can use Checkuser to verify if these are indeed sockpuppets, that would be helpful for the page.

FYI I have also requested help from Woody since has also dealt with China-proti and was worried about vandalism on that page.

Thank you, Hzzzzzz3 (talk) 04:49, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cai Lun

Hi Nlu, I hope you're doing well. I last spoke to you about Cai Lun, who's article I then got to GA status a couple months ago. I coming back to it now with my eyes on FAC, but there's some parts of Fan Ye's Han Dynasty biography of him that I've been unable to get a solid translation on, and was hoping you could help. If you're able, it would be greatly appreciated, you can find it here. Let me know, thanks - Aza24 (talk) 03:52, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aza24: Life is a bit crazy right now, but it's short enough that I should be able to translate it in not too long of a time. If I don't do it within a week, please remind me? Thanks. --Nlu (talk) 04:21, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Aza24: I looked at it last night and have a tentative blueprint in my mind as to how I'd translate it. But are there specific portions that you want highlighted in terms of my understanding? --Nlu (talk) 19:04, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well the first two paragraphs of the five paragraphs I think I need the most. Some of it (mostly the third–fifth paragraphs I think?) is translated in pages 50, 52 here although I'm not really sure how this translation lines up with the wikisource text. Aza24 (talk) 19:15, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Aza24: OK. I think I'll try to start off slowly, making a direct translation with notes below on concepts that may not be commonly understood or which I have questions myself. See quote below. When complete I'll note that it's complete. --Nlu (talk) 19:35, 13 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cai Lun's courtesy name was Jingzhong, and he was from Guiyang Commandery. He began serving in the palace at the start of the Yongping era. At the beginning of the Jianchu era, he served as Xiaohuangmen. After Emperor He took the throne, he became Zhongchangshi, and he participated in key strategic decisions.

Cai Lun was talented and learned. He used his full effort and was careful. He often was willing to correct the wrongs, even when it offended the stern faced. When he had vacation days, he would close his door and not entertain guests, but spent time in the field. He was later given the additional post of Shangfangling. In the 9th year of the Yongyuan era, he oversaw the manufacturing of imperial swords and other equipment, which were all made carefully and well, and he became an example for later generations.

From ancient times books and notes were usually written on bamboo pieces. "Paper" (紙) referred to using silk to write on. Silk was expensive and bamboo was heavy, and neither of them was convenient to use. Cai Lun had the idea of using tree bark, hemp heads, and ragged clothes and fishnets to make paper. He presented his creation to the Emperor in the first year of the Yuanxing era, and the Emperor found him capable. Thereafter, the entire realm adopted his creation, and it was known as "Marquess Cai's paper."

In the first year of the Yuanchu era, Empress Dowager Deng, on account that Cai Lun had long been in service, created him the Marquess of Longting with a fief of 300 households. He later became the Taipu at Changle Palace. In the fourth year of the Yuanchu era, the Emperor, finding that the various classics often did not have standard texts, selected the yezhe Liu Zhen, along with other well-learned people and good officials to gather at Dongguan [i.e., the eastern hall] to edit and correct the Han laws in accordance, and made Cai Lun in charge of the project.

Previously, Cai Lun, under Empress Dou's orders, made false accusations against Emperor An's grandmother Consort Song. After the Empress Dowager's death, Emperor An began to oversee all affairs of state. He ordered Cai Lun to self-report to the ministry of justice. Cai Lun did not want to be humiliated, and therefore, after bathing and putting on formal wear, drank poison and died. His fief was cancelled.

Note: Guiyang Commandery's headquarters was at modern Chenzhou, and covered southern Hunan, northeastern Guangxi, and northwestern Guangdong.
Note: Yongping was 58-75, during the reign of Emperor Ming of Han.
Note: Jianchu was 76-84, during the reign of Emperor Zhang of Han.
Note: Xiaohuangmen was a position for eunuchs that was above the ordinary eunuch, but not that highly ranked. I don't think I have a good translation for it - a direct translation would be "little yellow door" which is meaningless in this context.
It turns out that it was higher ranked than I expected. The salary was 600 dan (and during Han, salary was highly correspondent with rank, much more so than later dynasties), which is fairly high. (Compare with Zhongchangshi below.) (For the palace officials' salaries and the such (note that not all of these officials were eunuchs, but most were), see vols. 116 and 117 of the Book of Later Han.)
Note: Emperor He reigned 88-106. At the start of his reign, Empress Dowager Dou was regent, and her brother Dou Xian was very powerful, so implied, although not stated, was that he was participating in their decision circle, not with the young Emperor He.
Note: Zhongchangshi was one of the highest positions for an eunuch. See Ten Attendants. (I don't like "attendant" as a translation; a direct translation would be "regular attendant in palace.") Salary was 1,000 dan.
Note: The "stern faced" here presumably referred to Empress Dowager Dou and/or Dou Xian, and not Emperor He (who was a child), at least initially, but as Cai's career lasted until the reign of Emperor An, it could have included, potentially, Emperor He, Empress Dowager Deng, and Emperor An.
Note: Shangfangling was a position in charge of overseeing manufacturing of imperial swords and other tools. It had a salary of 600 dan - so the biography was careful to note this was an additional position, not affecting Cai's Zhongchangshi position.
Note: the 9th year of Yongyuan would be 97.
Note: the 1st year of Yuanxing would be 105. As Emperor He died in 105 and was succeeded by his infant son Emperor Shang of Han (who then died in 106), this must have been to Emperor He before Emperor He's death.
Note: the 1st year of Yuanchu would be 114.
Note: In Cai's title of Marquess of Longting, "ting" denotes a village or a cluster of villages.
Note: Changle Palace was the palace of the empress dowager. Taipu was the director of stables, and carried a salary of 2,000 dan and was highly ranked - even higher than the Shaofu (the head of the emperor's household).
Note: the 4th year of Yuanchu would be 117, by which time Emperor An was emperor, so he would be the emperor referred to.
Note: a yezhe was an attendant to the emperor (as I understand it, not an eunuch) with the salary of 600 dan.

@Aza24: Done. --Nlu (talk) 05:36, 14 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nlu, this is extremely useful, thank you! I will let you know if I have any questions, but your helpful notes seem to cover any possible confusion. Best - Aza24 (talk) 00:08, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looking further, Xiaohuangmen seems to mean "Gentlemen Attendant at the yellow gates" or something along those lines. Do you know what this means or what these duties meant? I'm finding it a lot of places, but no one says what the "yellow gates" part is actually referring to. Some online forum posts were saying that it's attending to the royal harem, but I haven't found this in a reliable source. Aza24 (talk) 23:44, 18 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've found this but I'm not sure if that really means anything. Aza24 (talk) 01:13, 19 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The significance of Huangmen changed as time went by, such that by the time of the Tang Dynasty, it was one of the main governmental organs and was manned by non-eunuchs. (See Chancellor of the Tang dynasty for more details.) But at the time of the Han, it was an eunuch-only position. --Nlu (talk) 06:11, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Nlu, sorry to bother again – I have a question about courtesy names, and would greatly appreciate any help. Is there a logical place to put Cai Lun's courtesy name (Jingzhong) in the article? That is, was this something assigned after death (so I could put it in the legacy section) or perhaps something assigned at birth (so I could put it in the early life section) or something else? Aza24 (talk) 03:07, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Traditionally, courtesy name was used both during a person's lifetime and after his (or, in semi-modern times, her) death as a more respectful way of referring to a person.(See naming taboo for one of the reasons, although not the only one.) It would not have been given at birth - usually, the person creates one for himself/herself, or, in some cases, his/her parents/grandparents, or some other respected figure, gave them. (A posthumous name would be a name given after death by the emperor to signify what the imperial government thought of the person, but as far as I can see, Cai, having been disgraced at the time of his death, did not receive one.) I think it would just fit as one of his names. (When writing articles myself, I would typically put it in the lead.) --Nlu (talk) 04:23, 14 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request for proof reading of references/citations in Traditional Chinese in Shizuka (band)

Hello, Nlu. I'd like to ask you if you could help in proof reading the statements with references/citations to a source in Traditional Chinese in Shizuka (band). I've added all the original Chinese text in citation as explanatory foot notes in Shizuka (band) to ease this work and to address WP:ANNOTATION for non-English sources. I'm asking because there was conflict in the talk page of that article regarding using the only source in Chinese the respective article. As so, I'm pretty much asking for an independent audit because, as you can notice in the citations footnotes, I do already have the source translated by a native Chinese professional human translator. talk@TRANSviada 02:03, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@TRANSviada: I will try to look at it in a few days, but I already have skepticism based on a couple facts: 1) this source (in Chinese) itself claims to be a translation - but does not specify the language translated from or cite the original non-translated source, and 2) it's a blog. (I know blogs are not inherently unreliable, but they're rarely inherently reliable.) Can you let me know the specific points of contention? --Nlu (talk) 04:18, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TRANSviada: I guess on second reading, the "translation" portion can be interpreted as that the author interviewed the band with a Japanese-Chinese interpreter (rather than that it was translated from another source). If that's the understanding, I think that makes it less inherently unreliable. --Nlu (talk) 04:19, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nlu: Oh sorry, I missed to tell the details. The original publication of this article/interview was in a Taiwanese music magazine named Rocker. The link to the blog is a verbatim copy (likely unauthorized) of the text from the magazine; the author confirmed it to me 2 years ago. Your guess on your second reading is correct. I don't know if the author directly spoke in Japanese with the interviewees or used an interpreter, albeit the author might knew Japanese by that time. The points of contention are the statements referencing the Chinese source and its respective Chinese citations (all in notes) in lowercase Latin alphabet in that article: Shizuka (band)#Non-English citations. I've further added some that were missing.
talk@TRANSviada 17:35, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TRANSviada: Got it. Thanks for the clarification. So to clarify, what you'd like me to do is to verify the reliability of the translation? --Nlu (talk) 22:12, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nlu: As I see it, the priority is to verify the statements made in the article (from lead section to Shizuka (band)#2000–2002: Reunition, Tokyo Underground '95, and Le Weekend festival) referencing the respective Chinese citations, mainly for statements that only reference the source in Chinese. Although it would be welcome, reviewing the actual translations is not needed since the objections in Talk:Shizuka (band) brought by the author of the Chinese source were in relation to my knowledge in Chinese and "factual errors that may have made their way into this entry".

Hey if you have a second, can you discern any of the Chinese on this statue? The part immedieately under the head is already in the image description (湖南涉外经济学院的蔡伦半身雕像。蔡伦(61年/63年—121年)中国东汉时期的发明家和宦官) but I'm wondering if the lower pedestal has anything you can read. Aza24 (talk) 05:09, 15 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The first part quoted from the Book of Later Han - the part that stated: "縑貴而簡重,並不便於人" - but the second part then quoted an earlier portion of the same passage - "莫不精工坚密,为后世法" which made the inscription make no sense as rendered. --Nlu (talk) 04:38, 16 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Translation help

Hey Nlu, I hope all is well! Could you possibly help me figure out who the emperors are in this set from the MET? So far I can tell it begins with some Qing emperors, ends with Yuan, has Taizong before Yuan and maybe Song emperors after the Qing? I can't translate the Chinese, but if you could possibly list them out numerically if you have the time and interest it would help a lot! I'm working to create a new list of Chinese rulers (see User:Aza24/List of Chinese monarchs) so am looking at portrait options and such. Aza24 (talk) 22:39, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much! A quick question for you, if you have a second. Loewe 2000 says on Emperor Qianshao of Han that "He was passed off as being the son of Huidi and his empress, and thus the Empress Lü's own grand-daughter. Learning in 184 that he was not the son of the former emperor and his consort...", yet our article on him has Hui as his father and in Hui's article is his listed as his child. Do you know what's up with this? Aza24 (talk) 03:05, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
This is one where Loewe was likely relying on the Records of the Grand Historian and the Book of Han in asserting that all eight of the recorded sons of Emperor Hui of Han were not actually his sons - which was an assertion that the officials who overthrew the Lüs after Empress Dowager Lü's death made in justifying replacing Emperor Houshao of Han with Emperor Wen of Han. But even in antiquity there have been questions about that. The Zizhi Tongjian, for example, chose to use more ambiguous wording in not definitively stating whether that is in fact the truth, but that that was the officials' allegation. Bo Yang asserted that there was no real evidence that they were not Emperor Hui's sons. As, during Emperor Hui's own lifetime, they were regarded as his sons (something that no traditional source disputes), I believe it is most neutral (although there will be arguments about that as well) to state that they were his sons while noting the officials' post-hoc allegations that they were not. --Nlu (talk) 04:50, 31 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Translation request for Xunzi

Hi Nlu, I hope I'm not coming here too much...! (Please let me know if that is the case) I was wondering if you would be able to translate Xunzi's biography in the Shiji for me? It's pretty short and can be found here. Incidentally, Watson never translated this chapter and the ongoing Nienhauser editions haven't gotten to it yet (I think they've gone up to the chapters right before it). I'm working on Xunzi here, hopefully with a GA or FA in mind for the future. Best – Aza24 (talk) 03:28, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

No, you're not asking for too much at all... On the other hand, I am pretty booked up at work and at home right now, and this is a very difficult (for me, at least) passage. But I can try to take a stab at it when I get a chance, although I think the reliability may be suspect given the difficult wording. (There are a few terms that I may have to guess and am not completely certain about my guesses.) Let me know if you want me to try; it may take weeks. And please do remind me. --Nlu (talk) 05:20, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
My goal is to include some Shiji references in addition to modern ones (like I did with Cai Lun) and since they are thus supplementary, I'm in no rush at all for the translation. Even if it takes you a few months to get around to it, that works with me! I'll check back in a few weeks if I haven't heard anything. Best – Aza24 (talk) 23:04, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nlu! Have you ever heard about this? Couldn't find any sources for it online that weren't circular to Wikipedia. But I didn't check the Shiji (or Bamboo Annals) thoroughly where I suspect it would have originated, if it all. I know that ancient accounts of Confucius claimed him to be related to very old figure(s) in Chinese history, but I always thought it was general claim like 'The Kings of Xia', not a specific king of Xia/Shang. Aza24 (talk) 18:16, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Aza24: I looked up on Shiji and the story there only said that he is "of Song" (i.e., from the state of Song, whose ruling house was purportedly from the Shang royal house). (See vol. 47.) I have never read the Bamboo Annals (only sources citing it) and a quick look just now, despite my lack of familiarity with its format, does not show any references to him in either the Shang or Zhou portions of it. It was based on this theory that Confucius's descendant Kong Ji was created the Duke of Yin during Han Dynasty. See Zizhi Tongjian, vol. 32. Beyond that, I am unaware of any claims to a specific descent. --Nlu (talk) 22:19, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Nlu—that largely confirms my suspicion. I am not too familiar with the Bamboo Annals either, but would probably not trust it even if it did reference his genealogy!
If you have any extra time, you are more than welcome to take a look at User:Aza24/List of Chinese monarchs, where myself and another user have been rewriting the Chinese monarch list to be fully sourced and comprehensive. Your feedback would be most appreciated, though I should note that it is a bit rough still, and the lead, Ancient and late imperial sections are incomplete.
