Couple of things

A question: have you thought about participating in this year's WikiCup? A request: if you have the time, I would greatly appreciate your comments over at a peer review for Genghis Khan, which I hope to take to FAC in the near future; I know it's not really your period/area, but any comments would be welcome. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 22:04, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not really thought about WikiCup, to be honest: I expect I'd be eliminated fairly quickly! I've had a quick scan over Genghis Khan: looks like a very impressive piece of work. I'll give it a proper read before I give full comments -- just left one that popped out to me so that I don't forget about it later. UndercoverClassicist T·C 07:35, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much, I'll get to them ASAP. I think with your content work and your reviews, you'd have a very good chance of getting far in the competition—I mean, your GAs above would get you through to the next round already. Still, your choice. ~~ AirshipJungleman29 (talk) 20:33, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Help out with a peer review?

Hi UC, as you suggested, I have put up the article Sam Manekshaw for peer review. I believe you are very busy at the moment but I would still request you to join the peer review if possible. Also, might I suggest that you try the OneClick archiver for archiving old sections on here which the bot hasn't? Thanks in advance, looking forward to your comments. Matarisvan (talk) 05:28, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello -- thanks for this message, and good luck with the review. At the moment, I'd have relatively little to add what I've said at FAC: lots of improvements have been made, but I would be looking to see more comprehensiveness, particularly in the "Legacy" section. I'll be happy to join in the PR: it would probably be most useful for me to do so after others have chimed in, as they will see things that I haven't and the article will doubtless evolve and improve as a result. UndercoverClassicist T·C 10:44, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, @SchroCat and @Ian Rose have partaken in the PR and also pointed out the need to expand the Legacy section. Should I be getting opinions from more editors? Also looking forward to you joining in soon. Matarisvan (talk) 05:32, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Choregoi

While commenting chez the Beulé Gate, I found this verse by W. S. Gilbert from The Grand Duke buzzing round my mind:

     We've a choir hyporchematic (that is, ballet-operatic)
Who respond to the choreutæ of that cultivated age,
And our clever chorus-master, all but captious criticaster
Would accept as the choregus of the early Attic stage.
This return to classic ages is considered in their wages,
Which are always calculated by the day or by the week –
And I'll pay 'em (if they'll back me) all in oboloi and drachmæ,
Which they'll get (if they prefer it) at the Kalends that are Greek!

Later in the song come a few lines rather closer to my heart:

As they gradually got on, they'd τρέπεσθαι πρὸς τὸν ποτον
(Which is Attic for a steady and a conscientious drink).
But they mixed their wine with water – which I'm sure they didn't oughter –
And we modern Saxons know a trick worth two of that, I think!

This information will be of no use to you whatever, but I send it anyway. Best wishes, Tim riley talk 10:18, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Athene noctua and CVA

If you haven't seen any of the Agora picture books in printed form, you haven't seen one of my favorite Alison Frantz photos. It's on the back cover of picture book 22, Birds of the Athenian Agora, by Bob Lamberton and Susan Rotroff. Scroll all the way to the end. Choliamb (talk) 01:24, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Great photo: I also like the note just above it: The authors would be interested to have records of any bird observations within the Agora. I wonder how many they got. UndercoverClassicist T·C 21:57, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Ludensg (04:41, 18 February 2024)

Hello! Having some trouble on reaching consensus on some edits on a page, see the discussion here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Raiden_(Metal_Gear)

I think the change should be reverse to my last revision, which has been undone, as I think it's relevant information given the context (its not original research). Also, not including this would result in more vandalism on the page, whih has been strong the past couple of weeks. What do you think? --Ludensg (talk) 04:41, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If no consensus can be reached on the talk page, there are a few options. If only two editors are involved, you might try a WP:THIRDOPINION, which is a means of getting an uninvolved editor to take a look and give a view: it might be possible for both of you currently involved to agree to defer to whatever they decide. Alternatively, there is a formal process to seek wider consensus, which again may or may not be useful.
Ultimately and sometimes frustratingly, there is no way of calling in an authoritative judgement on a matter of content: in general, editors are reasonably people and consensus can be reached (even if that means ending up on a solution that nobody is totally happy with, but everyone can live with), but it is sometimes the case that it cannot, and here sometimes the only thing to do is find another article. I don't mean that to sound pessimistic, but simply to help you set expectations. 17:46, 18 February 2024 (UTC) UndercoverClassicist T·C 17:46, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha! Thanks! I'll keep that in mind! Ludensg (talk) 19:39, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
