    A specific question- using twitter or X?

    Let's say that there is a article and it uses "X" (or twitter) in it. Should it be referred as "X, formally known as twitter" or just "X" with it being linked to it to the twitter wikipedia article? Max~is~a~good~dog! (talk) 00:44, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Well we don't actually have an article on X in that context. According to our Twitter article A few days after the rebrand took effect, an AP Stylebook update recommended that journalists refer to the platform as "X, formerly known as Twitter", so I think that is your answer, unless you specifically need to refer to Twitter under Elon Musk. Using analysis tools on individual Noticeboard discussions

    The recent/ongoing RfC on The_Anti-Defamation_League is... unwieldy. I would like to see which authors have added the most text to it. However, because this is an active discussion on a noticeboard, there isn't really a way to only look at the edits for the one section, so far as I know. Does anyone have suggestions on how I could do this with Wikipedia's tools, or is there an external tool capable of this? Safrolic (talk) 01:11, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @Safrolic: I haven't used it, but looking at the screen shots, [1] might be able to help. Why do you want to wade into that quagmire of an RFC? You should leave it to more experienced editors. It is already being discussed on the admin boards. RudolfRed (talk) 01:37, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion of my additions to notable people

    I recently noticed that my two additions to the notable people of the article on Samsun, Turkey were deleted. One about A.I. Bezzerides and the other about Philocles Anthopoulos. Please tell me why. (FYI, I am a regular donor to Wikipedia Foundation.) Rizos01 (talk) 01:49, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    I will restore A. I. Bezzerides, but I have no idea who Anthopoulos is. Clarityfiend (talk) 02:04, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi Rizos01. First, thank you for donating to the WMF, but whether article content is allowed to stay or is removed as nothing to do with donations to the Wikipedia Foundation. The two are completely unrelated.
    Next, when it comes to individual entries in "Notable people" sections, there are often disagreements as who should be included and often inclusion depends whether common selection criteria have been established for the article. So, for future reference, it's usually a good idea to check to see whether such criteria have been established on the article's talk page (including any talk page archives) before adding to the list. If you don't find any, add someone to the list, but your addition is subsequently undone by another person, you should seek clarification on the article's talk page in accordance with WP:DR. Generally, the most basic criteria for inclusion is that the person you want to add already has a stand-alone Wikipedia article written about them, and their suitability for inclusion is clearly established and supported by citations to reliable sources in that article. Anything else tends to be a bit of a gray area where inclusion might require further discussion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:47, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup

    Information icon Hello everyone, I have a questionan about FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup which is an user said that FIVB never used " 2023 World Cup" in any of the news, the event was unofficial and not recognised by FIVB, that was just for japanese marketing purposes only and shouldn't mark it in results summary. I have different opinion, which is with the change of qualification for the Paris Summer Olympics, the 2023 World Cup will serve as one of the three Olympic qualification tournaments. Only eight teams will participate in this edition (FIVB information). The champion U.S received the trophy from FIVB in final and I think we need mark it in results summary, but that user disagree it and I think we need have a discussion in here, solve the problem and ask for your helps. Thanks. Stevencocoboy (talk) 02:54, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    The place to have a discussion is on the talk page of that article, which I see you are already doing. There is no point in bringing the discussion here. If you want to involve a wider group of editors, put a (non-partisan) message about the discussion on WT:WikiProject Volleyball. ColinFine (talk) 09:14, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Help for english translation

    Hello everyone, I would like to translate to english pages that I have already created and published on the French wikipedia, but I cannot find any way to get them approved. (one has been stuck for more than 2 months: example here : Draft:The Oath of Cyriac

    I have the translations ready, I just need help from a member who has the built-in translation tool.

    Superjuju360, it has been stuck because no reviewer has got around to reviewing it. I'm not aware of any need for any "translation tool". Suggestions: Has it been shown with Catalan, French, Spanish, or English subtitles? What's its title in Catalan, French, Spanish, or English? It "has been very well received": OK, good, but for what? (You might add such details as "Writing in [title of newspaper], [name of critic] praised the film for its ABC portrayal of XYZ[reference]".) -- Hoary (talk) 07:14, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    I don't know what an account is, if not an ID; and I haven't heard of "character IDs". Your account, or ID, can't be "unbanned" (by which I guess you mean unblocked) if we don't know what it is. Swahili page may have an error?

    I cannot read Swahili, however, at the bottom of this page: https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moses_Wetangula [2] (which is apparently using this template? here: https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigezo:Kenya-Ministers_of_Foreign_Affairs [3]. Where it says "Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Kenya" displays wider that the rest of the page, which reduces the size of majority of the article text.

    I thought someone here could help. Thank you, -- Ooligan (talk) 15:00, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    You would be wrong, as this is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. We largely cannot speak Swahili either. Remsense 15:03, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Ooligan: We do sometimes offer help with other wikis. It took me some time to figure out what you meant because it doesn't happen in my browser. The template had a very long string without spaces. It sounds like your browser shrinks the whole page to display the entire string at the same time instead of offering horizontal scrolling as normal. I added spaces. Does [4] stop your problem? PrimeHunter (talk) 16:00, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Yes, that resolved the display issue. I appreciate your prompt and courteous help!
    The first response received here by @Remsense was not helpful and the negative tone of the communication may keep others editors from seeking future "help" at this Help Desk.
    Again, thank you @PrimeHunter for taking some of your time to fix this small problem. Your good work (and that of many others) is why I occasionally seek assistance here at the Help Desk. Best regards, -- Ooligan (talk) 16:49, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Need an Editor

    How might I find someone proficient to edit a friend's article? Article has many references and names that link to further articles. Phrzbyphil (talk) 15:23, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    You may use the article talk page of an existing article to propose edits in the form of an edit request(click for instructions). 331dot (talk) 15:29, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Phrzbyphil: Note that edit requests are generally only useful if you have a clear, specific, and uncontroversial edit in mind (and are unable to edit the page yourself). If you want to bring attention to a general problem with an article, you can add a cleanup tag to the article, start a discussion on its talk page, or bring it up at a relevant WikiProject or noticeboard. jlwoodwa (talk) 01:47, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Also, what edits are needed here? Having "many references and names that link to further articles" sounds like a good thing – we don't want {{unreferenced}} and {{dead end}} articles! It might help if you paste the name of the article here, so we can see what's wrong with it. jlwoodwa (talk) 01:51, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    moving a draft out of my sandbox

    I have prepared a draft article in my article wizard sandbox. It is ready for publication. There is no visible SUBMIT button. No visible MORE button. I have been advised to add {{AfC submission|||ts=20240619154232|u=Andrewcliftonpayne|ns=4}} "at the top". What does that mean? The Talk button is red. What do I do? The "Talk" link is red because nobody has yet created that particular talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 16:03, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi Andrewcliftonpayne,
    I've moved a draft you created over to Draft:William Boleyn Archdeacon of Winchester d.1582 because you appeared to have created it in USERSPACE rather than DRAFTSPACE. And I've added the {{AfC submission/draft}} template so that you can click on Submit when it's ready. -- D'n'B-t -- 17:32, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    All of a sudden I have to click on the magnifying glass to start a search.

    Long time user and donor. Since I usually use Wikipedia if I have a question I am perplexed to see that I now have to click to start a search instead of the search window already being present. After a few decades of knowing the search window will be present, muscle memory kicks in and I get discombobulated. Then I wonder why this change was made and can't figure out why. Time starts ticking by and I realized that I will never get this wasted time back. Yet, inquiring minds want to know. Why did you remove the search window and would you please put it back or allow a change of url when the search window is present so that I can save the url equipped with the opened search window to my Quick Launch Bar. And if you would be so kind your could make the mouse cursor default to the search bar when opened. Fewer clicks. Less carpal tunnel. I'm using two mouses now to reduce carpal tunnel. Same brand and model of mouse so the driver just sees one mouse input. I point using my right hand and click with the thumb of my left hand. This really helps! Orange Punkin (talk) 20:36, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @Orange Punkin The default "skin" for Wikipedia is now WP:VECTOR22 and as that link explains (see screenshot on that page) the search bar should be top-centre of the page. There are various other skins available if that doesn't suit you, which you can experiment with at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. Mike Turnbull (talk) 21:01, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Orange Punkin: Vector replaces the search bar with a magnifying glass icon in narrow windows. Other skins don't do that. Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets has the option "Focus the cursor in the search bar on loading the Main Page". It doesn't work when Vector 2022 only shows the magnifying glass. See also Wikipedia:FAQ/Main Page#Why doesn't the cursor appear in the search box, like with Google? PrimeHunter (talk) 21:21, 19 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Welcome. The help desk is for questions about editing Wikipedia? Did you have a question? Your wording is quite unclear RudolfRed (talk) 04:16, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Leeja Miller appears to be a Youtube personality with a substaintial following. There is not a Wikipedia article about her because there is no significant coverage of Leeja Miller in reliable, secondary sources - so there's nothing to use for a Wikipedia article. We say this doesn't meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. If someone else were to write about Leeja Miller in, for instance, a generally reliable magazine or newspaper that was independent of her, then that would a starting point for a Wikipedia article. -- D'n'B-t -- 06:42, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Did you have a question about editing or using Wikipedia? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:20, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    I tried adding a citation for a claim in Anino Games, on the release of Timothy and Titus. I found a source (press release) of the game's release and involvement of Anino Games, which I used as citation. I added the reference, as it needed a citation, using the visual editor.

    My problem is: In editing the "Name of the Website", when adding 'Game Developer" (the website), it does not immediately lead you to the website's wikilink, but a disambiguation page. I tried different formats in the visual editor, but I just couldn't do it successfully. How can I do so? Also, may I know if the citation was valid?

    ~~~~ RFNirmala (talk) 13:52, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Since there are multiple items named Game Deceloper, you will need to put "Game Developer (website)" as the website link to lead to the right article. If you don't want the parentheses to be visible for viewers, you will need to use pipelink by typing [[Game Developer (website)|Game Developer]]. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 20:24, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Nichol40: Are you using the visual or source editor? In the case of visual you can just click on the inline number citation, and a box with an "Edit" button will appear. If you're using the source editor just look for the content sandwiched between the <ref> tags. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:22, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi Nichol40. References are displayed in the Reference (or similarly-named) Section near the bottom of the Article, but their code is located where the first example of their superscript number [n] appears in the main text. Click the '[Edit]' next to the relevant Section title and look for it.
    If it's in the Infobox, use the 'Edit' or 'View source' tab at the top of the article – the Infobox code usually appears first; if it's in first paragraph or 'Lede', do the same – the Lede's code usually follows that of the Infobox. Hope this helps. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 151.227.226.178 (talk) 19:03, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello. Wikipedia is created by thousands of volunteer editors, like you and me, who work on what they choose.
    What you are doing here is the equivalent of going to a public place, standing up, and saying "I'd like somebody to write an article about this temple. Please write it for me".
    It is possible that one of the thousands of people who reads this page will go "Oh, yes, that's interesting", and look into it; but it's not very likely.
    If you ask instead at WikiProject India, the people who read that already have an interest in India, so it's slightly more likely that somebody will be interested and pick it up; but still, not very likely.
    If you want this article to exist, the most likely way to make it happen is for you to write it yourself; but that is hard, and new editors rarely manage it unless they first spend a few weeks or months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to several existing articles.
    What I will say, though, is that the most important (and often the most challenging) part of writing an article is finding the sources on which the article is to be based. If there is to be an article on your temple, ever, somebody will first have to find those sources. If you begin that search, if you do the "ground work", then it is slightly more possible that somebody will be interested in the project.
    So, what I suggest you do, is
    • Create an account (that is not essential, you can continue to edit anonymously, but it's easier for people to communicate with you if you have an account.
    • Find topics that interest you, and look at the task centre for edits that you can do to learn about Wikipedia.
    • Search for sources that are reliably published, wholly unconnected with the temple, and containing significant coverage of the temple. They do not have to be online, or in English, though it is easiest if they are both.
    If you can find several such sources, then it would be worth posting in WikiProject India, as I suggested, or reading your first article and trying to create it yourself. ColinFine (talk) 18:57, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    IP editor. Wikidata has an entry for Hingula Temple in Talcher, Odisha here, which shows there is an article for it in the Odia language, as might be expected. I don't know how good that article is but it might form the basis of a translation you could use to draft an English equivalent. The main hurdle will be to show that the temple is notable enough to have an article in English. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:01, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Editing a page
    We have recently done extensive research on a page that is really outdated on wikipedia and I wanted to add a few items on there. Unfortunately it was flagged as self-promoting and asked if I was sure I wanted to submit but now I am unsure if what I did was wrong. We are adding our own site as a reference but only because it is verified information on the topic that I spent a lot of time researching. Is this against your policies? AtlasAdventured (talk) 01:13, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    AtlasAdventured, as "AtlasAdventured" you have added nothing to any article. Which article are you talking about, which username was it that added material then flagged as self-promoting, and why do you talk of "we"? -- Hoary (talk) 01:19, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello Hoary,
    I say "We" because I have a few employees that helped write and edit our website article on the subject. As for the wikipedia article in question, I did not finalize the edit to the wikipedia page because a red message appeared at the top of the page saying the edit was flagged as it may be 'self-promoting' and explained that I should look at the COI page and contact the Help Desk if I need further clarity AtlasAdventured (talk) 01:32, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    AtlasAdventured, there are other problems. A username must not be used by more than one person. It cannot be a company name. (If you wish, it can allude to the company: if Ashish and Naomi work for AtlasAdventured, they're welcome to the usernames Ashish@AtlasAdventured and Naomi@AtlasAdventured.) If you'd like to be, say, Wolfgang@AtlasAdventured, then please register that username, use it from now on, and note on its user page that you previously edited as AtlasAdventured. ¶ So: what is "[your] website article on the subject", "the Wikipedia article in question"? If we know, perhaps we can provide that further clarity. -- Hoary (talk) 02:19, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    If you and your employees are writing a Wikipedia article about your organizaion, you should stop immediately. Writing about yourself or your associated individuals/institutions are strongly discouraged,as it will be very difficult to write in an objective and trustworthy manner demanded by the policies here. If you are convinced that your organizaion passed the general guideline for inclusion, make a request at appropriate section of Wikipedia:Requested articles and provide acceptable sources along with the request. Note that Wikipedia is not a social media platform, we do not want promotional contents here. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 05:47, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Tutwakhamoe, as long as they declare their COI, people are free to create drafts about the organizations they're in or that they head. Wikipedia:Requested articles strikes me as a complete waste of time. I'm willing to be persuaded that I'm wrong about this. -- Hoary (talk) 07:51, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    While we're waiting for the page title, you might want to read WP:NOINDEX. Shantavira|feed me 09:43, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Is the any tool available for comparing texts to check regarding possible copyright concerns other than the https://dupdet.toolforge.org/ one? This doesn't seem to be working. AndyTheGrump (talk) 12:59, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello! Is there a possibility to get a border around a picture in a gallery? When part of picture is white, I wish to make a sharper delimitation from the background. For example, the first and second flag:
    Thank you in advance! Pegy22 (talk) 13:01, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    One way to do that is to use a table. See Help:Pictures#Galleries for more.
    Scam website on Southside page
    this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southside_(record_producer) when you click on southside's website, it takes you to a scam website which tries to make you belive that your PC is locked down, if you click anything on the site you get sent into full screen, (hold escape to get out of full screen). I was smart enough to not fall for it but i know a lot of people who arent, and i do not want anyone's confidential details getting leaked so i am reporting this in 108.67.74.89 (talk) 15:56, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    I have removed the website from the infobox, thanks for the feedback. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 16:03, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Fant-Karl article. Norwegian/English
    Some years ago I created a Wiki-article for "Fant-Karl" <https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fant-Karl> The site is in Norwegian. I would like now to present "Fant-Karl" on en.wikipedia, and have been working on translating and updating information for a site. What is the best way to go forward here? Mary JBarthelemy (talk) 15:58, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Generally you can start creating an article by clicking its red link (Fant-Karl in this case), or starte writing in your sandbox first if the article is too long to finish in one go. However, since the criteria for inclusion is different in each Wikipedia, make sure that the subject in question passes WP:GNG or WP:NBIO, as articles that did not pass notability guideline will face deletion. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 16:14, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    In your edit summary for your very first edit, Mary JBarthelemy, please say that this is a translation of Norwegian (Bokmål) no:Fant-Karl. (If you've already made the first edit, then put this in the edit summary for the earliest possible edit.) -- Hoary (talk) 21:55, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hi, I am having a problem and couldn't find a solution on Wikipedia. In Turkish Wikipedia, when you talk about a village(it can be a neighbourhood, town etc.), you usually have the name of the district in the title. For Village X located in District Y, the title is "X, Y." Most of the village pages on Wikipedia have this style. I started moving pages of Village X to the above-mentioned style. Is this okay? What I would like to do is basically turn them into the most common writing form. I know I can do that for disambiguation, but in this case, it is simply moving for aesthetic, style-based reasons. (There is a guide in Turkish Wikipedia supporting this, but English Wikipedia does not have a defined rule for Turkey.) So I do not know what to do in this context. Should I simply move pages, create redirects, or leave them as they are? Most other Wikipedias follow the same style since pages are translations from Turkish Wikipedia. Example: I moved Yenişakran to Yenişakran, Aliağa
    My other question is, when there is a navbox template, can I create links for future, non-existing pages? Because in a good number of navboxes about this topic, only existing pages are linked. So when someone creates a page, the person has to open the navbox and link it each time. Is it acceptable for me to change navboxes on a great scale in this manner? Example: I added links here to Template:Aliağa District
    Thank you for your help. Göycen (talk) 17:01, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    For your first question, titles of articles need qualifier only when there are multiple articles by the same name. If the name of a village is not known for any other items on Wikipedia, it does not need to have qualifier attached. Since people have different stylistic preferences, please hold a discussion and obtain concensus from the community before moving the articles.
    As for the second question, you can have articles that do not exist yet on navigation templates, in fact most of the navigation templates I've come across have red links on them. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 17:58, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @TutwakhamoeThank you for your answer. I will try to adhere that. One more question, how about creating redirects with qualifier w/o moving the page.
    So unique X village stays there. May I create page X, Y and redirect to X? Göycen (talk) 21:23, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    change picture
    hello, I'm Nino Kalandadze,( username- Ggotua) I have a question. I uploaded a new photo and it doesn't appear on the main page. it is on untested topic. Ggotua (talk) 17:08, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Your account does not seem to have uploaded any photo, you might need to try again. Maybe WP:UPIMG can help you. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 18:10, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    @Ggotua: The Wikimedia Commons upload log [5] shows you have uploaded two images but they were deleted as possible copyright violations. I don't have access to deleted Commons pages so I don't know what they contained. You received information and links at commons:User talk:Ggotua. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:00, 21 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
