Sharvari Wagh (born 14 June 1996)[1] is an Indian actress who works in Hindi films. Wagh began her career as an assistant director for Luv Ranjan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali in 2015, before making her acting debut with Kabir Khan's war drama series The Forgotten Army - Azaadi Ke Liye (2020). She ventured into films with Yash Raj Films's comedy Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021), which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.[2] She had her first commercial success with the comedy horror film Munjya (2024).
Early life
She was born in a Marathi family in 1996. Her parents are Shailesh Wagh, a builder and Namrata Wagh, an architect. She studied at Mumbai's The Dadar Parsee Youths Assembly High School and Ruparel College.[2] Manohar Joshi, former chief minister of Maharashtra, was her maternal grandfather.[3]
Career
Sharvari worked as an assistant director in the movies Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, Bajirao Mastani and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety.[3] She said she had been auditioning since 2014 for a main role in movies.[4] She made her acting debut with the 2020 Amazon Prime series The Forgotten Army - Azaadi Ke Liye opposite Sunny Kaushal.[5]
Sharvari made her film debut alongside Rani Mukerji, Saif Ali Khan and Siddhant Chaturvedi in Yash Raj Films (YRF)'s crime comedy Bunty Aur Babli 2, which was released in 2021.[6] Her performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and IIFA Award for Star Debut of the Year – Female. Hindustan Times noted, "Sharvari is pretty confident for her first film and has a great screen presence."[7] It did not perform well at the box-office.[8]
Her next release was three years later, in the comedy horror film Munjya in 2024. Inspired by the Indian folktale of munjya, the film served as an instalment of the Maddock Supernatural Universe.[9] Sukanya Verma from Rediff opined, "Sharvari sticks to her brief -- beam in enthusiasm, scowl in prosthetics".[10] Commercially, the film emerged as a sleeper hit.[11] In the same month, Sharvari featured in a special appearance alongside Junaid Khan and Shalini Pandey in YRF's biographical drama Maharaj.[12]
She will next headline the action drama Vedaa alongside John Abraham,[13] and join the YRF Spy Universe in an as-yet-untitled action thriller film co-starring Alia Bhatt.[14]
