Bandages across lower back

[edit]

I've been having trouble finding a citation for this, although I'm almost certain it did happen. If I recall correctly, he did it at least once between 2000 and 2003, but finding old NBA game reports is very difficult, and I can't come up with a good query. I'm pretty sure that it was an ACE bandage, but I'm not sure about that. If anyone can find a source, or a good resource for looking up old NBA.com (or other) articles, it would be much appreciated. Page move

[edit]

It appears the other Gary Payton, an astronaut, uses a middle initial, thus the NBA player is "Gary Payton" and the astronaut is "Gary E. Payton" making their relative notability a non-factor.

But, even if the astronaut does not sign his checks with an "E." he should be moved to "Gary Payton (astronaut)" as the NBA player is infinitely more notable. Geographical bias is not a factor as they are both American.

FREAK OF NURxTURE (TALK) 07:41, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've moved Gary E. Payton to Gary Payton (astronaut) and Gary Payton (basketball) to Gary Payton per the request on Wikipedia:Requested moves. —Cleared as filed. 19:41, 20 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

YOU guys

Gary Payton wore number 42?

[edit]

Underneath his picture it says that Gary Payton wore number 42 at some point in his career. When was this? I only recall him wearing 2 and 20, and can't find any info online about him wearing 42. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rtally3 (talkcontribs) 16:34, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He never did, either in the NBA or at OSU. Not sure where that's coming from. Speaking of the picture, why exactly do we have one of him from Miami? Granted he won a title there, but he was a peripheral player at the end of his career, as opposed to the 12.5 years he spent as a star in Seattle. I think it's safe to say he'll be remembered as a SuperSonic, not a member of the Heat. Shouldn't the picture reflect that? 67.102.51.5 (talk) 14:01, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

Considering he is a retired player now, Shouldn't there be a picture of Gary Payton in a suit, or him in a Seattle Sonics jersey? After all, he is most famous for his time in Seattle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.73.73.67 (talk) 09:01, 13 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of The Glove as nickname

[edit]
  • The article via Archive.org has

his nickname "The Glove" caught on in 1993 when his cousin phoned him during the week of the Western Conference Finals against Phoenix and told him “You’re holding Kevin Johnson like a baseball in a glove”

  • ESPN has late 1980s

The other element that defined Payton -- the lockdown defense that inspired the nickname "The Glove" -- he attributes to Ralph Miller, his coach at Oregon State.

Expansion please

[edit]

Wow, when I read this article, the first thing I noticed is that the “NBA career” part is very short during his SuperSonics tenure. For a player as great as he was and who made the Hall of Fame, that 13-year segment which makes up the bulk of his career should have way more detail.
