Indiana Jones 4 is the working title of the fourth film in the Indiana Jones series, which will be released worldwide on May 22, 2008.[1] The film was in development hell since the release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with various screenwriters and false production starts. Shooting finally commenced on June 18 2007, and Harrison Ford returned to play the title role.[2].

Development

During the late 1970s, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg made a deal with Paramount Pictures for five films about Indiana Jones.[3] Following the theatrical release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989, Lucas decided to let the series end as he felt he could not think of a good plot device.[4] Spielberg was still interested,[4] so in 1992, Lucas hired Jeb Stuart to write a screenplay for the film.[5] At the 1994 Venice Film Festival Harrison Ford confirmed interest in reprising the lead role for a final time,[6] and Lucas came up with a MacGuffin, "the best one we've ever found". The other two men balked as it was too similar to the previous films.[4]

In 1995, after Stuart's script didn't go through, Lucas called Last Crusade writer Jeffrey Boam back to pen a script,[7] working with him over two years to take out the overtly familiar elements and convincing Spielberg and Ford to do his original plot device.[4] Boam died of heart disease in 2000. M. Night Shyamalan was hired as his replacement with an intended 2002 shoot,[8] but he left because of what Ford described as "the failure of George and Steven to attend to him."[9] Lucas admitted he would not be able to give the project his full attention until he completed the final Star Wars film in 2005.[10] Afterwards, Stephen Gaghan[10] and Tom Stoppard[11] were approached to write a new screenplay.

With a title already planned,[12] Frank Darabont—who wrote several episodes of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles TV series[13]—was hired in May 2002 to replace Shyamalan.[14] Darabont's screenplay was set in the 1950s, after the demise of the Nazi regime.[15] The script also featured Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) in one scene,[16] and it did not have Jones' son.[17] In December 2002, while promoting Catch Me if You Can, Spielberg said he planned to shoot two films before filming Indiana Jones 4 in 2004 for a release the year after. He also dismissed the possibility of shooting it digitally.[18] Producer Frank Marshall declared that the film would not rely on CGI and instead use traditional special effects and stuntwork so as to be consistent with the previous films.[19] All of this unravelled in February 2004 when Lucas rejected the draft for reasons unknown,[20] although Spielberg had acclaimed it as the best since Raiders of the Lost Ark.[21] Having spent a year's worth of hard work on the project—which he considered a labor of love—Darabont was extremely disappointed and agitated with Lucas' rejection of the script.[22]

Jeff Nathanson was hired in October 2004 to write a completely new script,[23] which producer Kathleen Kennedy stated took place in the 1940s.[24] While shooting War of the Worlds in late 2004, Spielberg met with stuntman Vic Armstrong to discuss three stunt sequences he had envisioned.[4] Lucas stated around the release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith in 2005 that he did not plan to make any more Indiana Jones films after the fourth.[25] After a year on the script, Lucas rejected Nathanson's draft.[26]

Production

As 2006 began, Harrison Ford declared that if the film was not made by 2008, then the filmmakers should simply forget about making the film.[27] In the same month, Steven Spielberg confirmed Indiana Jones 4 as his next film, calling it "the sweet dessert I give those who had to chow down on the bitter herbs that I've used in Munich."[28] Though Spielberg said he would take a year off following the back-to-back production of War of the Worlds and Munich,[29] he still worked tirelessly on the script, hiring David Koepp to polish the screenplay.[30] Frank Marshall also reiterated using traditional special effects.[4] On December 29, 2006, George Lucas confirmed that he, Spielberg and Koepp finished the script, and that Indiana Jones 4 would commence filming in 2007.[31] The film will be set in 1957[32] and will address Ford's age.[33]

Filming began on June 18 2007[34] at Deming, New Mexico.[35] To prepare for the role, the 64-year-old Ford's fitness routine consisted of three hours a day at the gym and a high-protein diet of fish and vegetables.[36] His co-star Shia LaBeouf spent the same amount of time—gaining 15 pounds of muscle.[37] LaBeouf also prepared for his role by viewing the original three Indiana Jones films repeatedly[38]—echoing former Indiana Jones newcomer Sean Patrick Flanery.[39] The film will be shot in several locations globally,[40] including Los Angeles.[31] An extensive chase scene uses New Haven, Connecticut as a backdrop, including portions shot downtown and in Branford and Saybrook colleges of Yale University. The chase, with Indiana Jones riding a motorcycle, will also use Yale Commons dining hall and Old Campus, and will be shot between June 28-July 7.[32] Some shooting will take place by a waterfall.[40] In August, the crew will shoot for three weeks at Hamakua Coast in Hawaii.[35]

Cast

Soundtrack

John Williams stated on the 2003 DVD documentary The Music of Indiana Jones that he hoped to return to write the score for the film, as he did for the previous three.[45] In June 2007, Williams' company, the Gorfaine-Schwartz Agency, confirmed that Williams would be involved with the film.[46]

Marketing

Lucas intends to release the trailer around Thanksgiving 2007, when the film's title will be unveiled.[40] Hasbro and Lego will produce toy lines for the film, and LucasArts will produce video games. Burger King and Hallmark Cards will produce tie-ins. Random House, Scholastic, and DK will publish books,[47][48] and J. W. Rinzler is in the process of writing a "making-of" book on the film, as well as books for each previous film.[49] Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing, attributed the massive marketing push to the fact "It's been 19 years since the last film and we are sensing a huge pent-up demand for everything Indy."[47]
