Spider-Man 3 is a video game based on the Spider-Man 3 film. It was released May 4 2007.

The scenario draws from the film, Spider-Man comics and the Marvel Universe. The game features nine villains on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, five villains on the GBA and DS,and eight on the Wii, PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2, including the movie's primary villains Venom, New Goblin, and Sandman.

Gameplay

Many gameplay elements have been added and revised for this title in the series:[2]

  • Manhattan is much bigger than in Spider-Man 2, and the game features over 20 miles of sewers and subways, although only in the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC versions of the game.
  • Spider-Man has a brand new combat system that was worked from the ground up and includes more aerial moves and web attacks. The 360/PC/PS3 versions of the game feature more moves than the PS2/Wii/PSP versions of the game. For the Wii, the motion sensors are used during combat: the Wii Remote is used as Spider-Man's fists and the Nunchuk is used to dodge attacks.
  • In the Wii version, the motion sensors are also used for web-slinging as well as combat. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk are used as Spidey's right and left hands respectively. It is possible to switch to a left handed mode, so that the Wii Remote is used as Spidey's left hand, in the options menu.
  • Part of the game puts the player in control of the Black Suited Spider-Man where Spider-Man's combat system has more brutal moves and a "Rage" system that allows for more aggressive moves.
  • The game features cineractives that are button sensitive. Game director Chris Archer explained that all the gameplay is playable, including what would be included as a cinematic.
  • The Nintendo DS versions has a 100% touch screen combat system with only the d-pad being used for moving Spider-Man.

Plot

Peter Parker has finally started to feel secure. He is now Mary Jane's boyfriend, and New York City loves him. The problem is that Harry Osborn won't talk to him, new gangs (led by the Kingpin) arrive, Eddie Brock is threatening to take Peter's place at the Daily Bugle, and an escaped prisoner: Flint Marko falls into a particle accelerator which changes him into the Sandman. On a small date, Peter and MJ are talking about Harry who becomes the New Goblin. Peter fights New Goblin and takes him to a hospital. Afterwards, Peter is bonded with the Venom symbiote while sleeping. Using the new Black-Suit, he defeats Kingpin and his gangs, and as well takes down many other Villains. On a date, Peter snaps at Mary Jane and she gets angry and asks Peter to take her home. He does so but the Black Suit scares her and she breaks up with him. Peter realizes that the Black Suit is doing something to him and decides to take off. With the sound of a church bell the symbiote comes off Peter and it bonds with Eddie. Venom finds Sandman and asks him to team up. He turns him down and Venom uses his daughter, Penny, to blackmail him to help him. Venom and Sandman kidnap MJ and bring her to a construction site. Spider-Man arrives to save her and shortly afterwards Harry arrives to help him. Harry saves Mary Jane and defeats the oversized Sandman. Venom kills Harry and after a last fight between Spider-Man and Venom, Venom is supposedly killed. In the last scene, Spider-Man is reunited with Mary Jane, he comes to an understanding with Sandman, and in the final swing he says that the best way to honor the people he loves is to never stop being Spider-Man.

Cast

Despite Kirsten Dunst's absence from the voice-cast due to her busy schedule, the game has the highest amount of the movie cast reprising their roles for the game in the trilogy.

Development

Video game magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly was slated to have a worldwide exclusive story on the game for its October 2006 issue, going so far as to promote the exclusive in the previous issue. The issue instead shipped with a Guitar Hero II lead story, and a note from the Editor-in-Chief Dan Hsu stating that readers should "blame director Sam Raimi" for the change in content. A similar story was instead featured in the April 2007 issue of Game Informer.

Spider-Man 3 has been released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. Treyarch developed the PlayStation 3 & Xbox 360 version of the game, and Beenox ported this version of the game to PC. The remaining versions of the game were developed by Vicarious Visions.

Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC

Treyarch developed the game for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The PC version is the direct port of the Xbox 360 version developed by Beenox. These versions differ from those developed by Vicarious Visions because players cannot change into the Black Suit at will. Instead, you'll change into the Black Suit at a certain point in the storyline. Players can switch in and out of the Black Suit once they complete the game. Activision also released Spider-Man 3: Collector's Edition for the PS3, which includes webisodes, an interview with the movie's producer, a Lenticular card, and the exclusive ability to play as the New Goblin outside of a brief sequence at the end of game. The PC has the exclusive availability to be modified as many other PC games are, although very few mods have been released by anyone as of yet aside from a modded Black Suit Costume found on Marvelmods.com. Scorpion, Rhino, and Kingpin are exclusive villains to this version. Also this version is noticeably more violent than the last-gen consoles and Wii version. This is because of more violent moves by Spider Man and noticeable blood from the Lizard in the sewers. Also the PS3 Collector's Edition features New Goblin as a playable character, though he became downloadable on the PlayStation Network in early July 2007 and downloadable on the Xbox Live Marketplace on October 2007 and is shortly playable on the PC version. These versions received better reviews than the other versions and featured a much better combat system, a better looking city and a larger story line. Players are also able to swing freely and enter the Bugle for assignments like in Spider-Man 2 the Game. However, there are only 5 photo missions (minus the first Lizard storyline, which is a photo mission):

  • The player must swing to destinations and take photos of daily activities: You must swing to the police station to take photos of cops in front of the police station, cabbies in front of the UN, and a tourist in Times Square.
  • You swing to an Arsenic Candy Beauty Contest and take photos of the competitors and the winner, but soon, the losers claimed the finale was rigged and starts a riot with the others. You change back into Spidey and defeat them.
  • You find out there was a couple of combat suits stolen and takes a photo of the first one, you see the second one flying away across the sea and takes a photo before it does.
  • Robbie reveals that the gang responsible for the heist was the Order Of The Dragon Tail and you go to the other island to take a 240 point photo and defeats the henchmen and disables the suits.
  • Robbie excitedly tells you about rumors of UFO sightings in Manhattan and, thinking Mysterio is back, Spidey swings to the latest sight and takes photos of the UFO difficultly.

Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable

Vicarious Visions developed the game for the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PSP. The game follows the movie but has different side missions when compared to the Treyarch versions. Vicarious Visions allows players to switch between the red and black suit at will, although using the black suit has negative consequences. To get the black suit off you have to use motion/button sequences. These versions include two exclusive villains: Morbius, the Living Vampire, and Shriek. GameStop/EB Games exclusively carry Spider-Man 3: Special Edition for the PS2 which includes: a bonus DVD featuring "Spider-Man 3: The Story Behind the Web", an exclusive interview with Stan Lee, the Spider-Man 3 movie trailers, and a collectible lenticular card with an image from the movie. Otherwise, the PS2 and Wii versions are largely the same, although the Wii version does utilize the Wii Remote's motion sensor controls for swinging and combat. The PlayStation Portable version is a full port of the PlayStation 2 version of the game by Vicarious Visions and is confirmed to feature a free-roaming city, Morbius and shriek, plus the black suit . It is unlike Spider-Man 2 on PlayStation Portable, which was restricted to small areas, similar to the original Spider-Man. The PSP version has been released in the USA on November 1, 2007 alongside the Spider-Man 3 home video on Blu-ray release. The game was released on October 26, 2007 in the UK. The game has received generally favorable reviews since its release.

Villains

The list of villains in the Wii/PS2/PSP versions are as follows:

- The Lizard
- Kraven
- Carlyle
- Morbius
- Shriek
- New Goblin
- Sandman
- Venom

Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance

Spider-Man 3 was developed for the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. Vicarious Visions developed these versions of the game. Both versions are similar to previous Spider-Man games on their respective platforms but are loosely based on the third movie and feature the black suit. Electro is an exclusive villain in these versions.

Playable characters

  • Spider-Man - All versions
  • Spider-Man (Black Suit) - Beat the game (Xbox 360, PC, GBA, NDS, PS3) - Gather 50 Spider Emblems (Wii, PS2,PSP)
  • New Goblin -Playable for a Short time on 360, PS3, and PC. Downloadable on PSN and 360 Marketplace.

Reception

Spider-Man 3 has received mixed reviews on the Xbox 360,PC , Wii, PS2 and PS3 according to Metacritic. On Game Rankings, these versions average between 53% and 67%. The key criticism for these versions is the game's similarity to its predecessor. The PC version has been additionally criticized for its high minimum system requirements and 30 FPS framerate cap but received better reviews than the PS2, and Wii versions due to it being similar to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game. The Wii and PS2 versions has been criticized for a short story mode and disappointing graphics. The Wii verson has however been praised for the use of the Remote and Nunchuk in its gameplay, which is considered to be the Wii version's strongest point. The Xbox 360, PC and PS3 versions, despite receiving only average reviews, have been universally better received than the PS2 and Wii versions. The Wii version was given a "D" grade by The Wiire. X-Play gave the Wii version a 1 out of 5 (the first Wii game to get a 1 out of 5) and the PS3 version a 3 out of 5. The game was also criticized for not being the same version on each system. Some criticism has surfaced due to having New Goblin only fully playable in the PS3 Collector's Edition.

References

Previous games and films

  • When fighting gang members, Spider-Man may say that the gang is "no Green Goblin".
  • Spider-Man makes several references to Green Goblin and Doc Ock in the game.
  • The Oscorp office building that is seen in the first Spider-Man can be seen in the game. While mostly improved graphics wise, the big red letters that were on the buildings front reading "OSCORP" (as seen in Spider-Man 2) have been removed.
  • The Abandoned Theater where the player fights Arsenic Candy, was where Mysterio was fought in the previous game, and it seems to still not been repaired. However, this may not be the case as the theater Mysterio obliterated into flames was located on the southern end of the island around Soho while in this game, the abandoned theater is on the Upper East Side.
  • In the Xbox 360/PC/PS3 version of the game, Spider-Man makes several references to Mysterio, like when he has a photo mission of taking photos of a UFO.
  • In the Xbox 360/PC/PS3 version of the game, Spider-Man makes a reference to Electro during the Scorpion Unleashed mission
  • While completing "The Mad Bomber: Part 2" mission in the subway, at the end, Spider-Man stops a speeding train by getting in front of it and shooting out weblines to the walls passing by, in a very similar fashion as he stops a train in Spider-Man 2.
  • As Spider-Man, the player can enter Harry Osborn's home, in the room connected to the Goblin hideout. It is possible to break a mirror in the room, or drop in through a skylight, and gain access to the hideout, complete with the equipment used by both Harry & Norman.
  • There is a church in Greenwich Village which is the same church as the one in the climax of the film. As Spider-Man the player can enter the bell tower and descend into the church. Once in the player can see the spot where Eddie Brock prays to God to "kill Peter Parker." Spider-Man goes into the church anyway to remove the black suit.
  • You can collect 100 Meteors in the PS2/PSP/Wii versions. This is referenced to the Meteor that the Venom Symbiote came to earth in on the movie. This means you will then be able to play as the new Venom.
  • When you enter Peter Parker's apartment, it is the same way it was in Spider-Man 2 The Game. But when you go outside, it was an apartment building instead of a building with balconies.
  • When Spider-Man entered the electric room in Scorpion Unleashed, Spider-Man says," Well, actually, this kind of reminds me of my last fight with Electro". This is not true. Spider-Man never encountered Electro in the previous movie games (unless you count the PSP version of Spider-Man 2, which did feature Electro).
  • In Spider-Man 2 The Game, you enter the Daily Bugle via ventilation system. In here, you simply walk into the roof entrance

Classic movies

Marvel Comics

  • The game features a fictional company "Ditko Chroming" named after Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko.
  • After defeating a thug, Spider-Man may remark "And now you know why they call me 'Amazing'", in reference to Marvel's long running Amazing Spider-Man comic. Similarly, he also remarks "I may not be 'Amazing', but I have been called 'Spectacular'", which is a reference to Spectacular Spider-Man, another of Marvel's Spider-Man comics. Some of his high level moves also feature "Amazing" in the name.
  • After acquiring the final jumping upgrade, Bruce Campbell remarks that "Now even Stiltman will look up to you", in reference to the Marvel comics villain. Similarly, another of the powerful upgrades leads to the remark "The Hulk will now be green with envy. Well, because he's actually green." in reference to the Marvel Comics character.
  • One of the civilians that is displeased with Spider-Man will say "That guy is such a publicity hog. We should just call him Spider-Ham!" - a reference to Marvel's Spider-Man parody comic, Spider-Ham.
  • When fighting Carlyle in his helicopter, J. Jonah Jameson will make a reference to the hero Ant-Man if you are hit.
  • Eddie Brock's death in the GBA version of the game is similar to how Angelo Fortunato, the second Venom, was deserted by the suit in midair, and killed by his fall to the ground.
  • The character of Carlyle in the game is portrayed as the leader of the H-bombers but in the Amazing Spider-Man comics he appeared as a scientist that had stolen Doctor Octopus' technology.
  • On the Wii version of the game, Shriek is portrayed as Morbius' wife. However, in the comics Shriek never had any connection to Morbius and was, in fact, Carnage's girlfriend for some time.
  • On the Nintendo DS version, after putting on the black suit, Spider-Man can occasionally be heard humming the theme song to the original TV series ("Look out, here comes the Spider-Man...").
  • In the comics, the venom symbiote was obtained by spider-man on a strange planet called battleworld where a mavolent being named the Beyonder forced heroes and villians from the Marvel universe to fight. In the game, however, the symbiote simply comes down to Earth on a metorite and bonds with Peter then.
  • Also in the PlayStation 2 version of the game, an enemy before combat may say, "Look out, here comes the Spider-Man!", another reference to the original Spider-Man cartoon's theme song.
  • One of the combos featured in the game is named Rofl Copter. This combo is named after the commonly used internet slang, ROFL, more specifically the rofl copter variation of the slang term.
  • If the player successfully dodges an attack Spider-Man might say "kinda' like taking the football away before you kick it, huh?" a reference to the Peanuts gang.
  • When Spider-Man says his name is hyphenated while fighting a thug, it refers to a 1960s comic where he uses a similar line, and how most people usually spell his name without a hyphen.
  • While fighting the H-Bombers, Spider-Man remarks "If this is industrial espionage then maybe I will finally get to say, 'Man, Spider-Man.'" - a reference to James Bond, even though James Bond does not participate in industrial espionage.
  • When fighting Sandman for the first time, he refers to Spider-Man as "Seabiscuit," a reference to the film featuring Tobey Maguire.
  • During the Scorpion boss battle after the chase, Scorpion [in his mind-controlled state] may shout "Exterminate! Exterminate!, referencing Doctor Who.
  • After upgrading to the 5 Hit Melee Combo, Bruce Campbell says "We can make you better, stronger, faster. Well, better & stronger anyway." referencing The Six Million Dollar Man. Although in other versions of the game he says "Today's melee combo is brought to you by the number 5, and the letters 'O' and 'W'." It's unknown if this line is a mimic to how the show Sesame Street ends.
  • The missions in which Spider-Man stops the theft of fruit pies are a nod to the 70's - 80's Hostess ads featuring Marvel heroes. He even references the ads by saying "Without fruit pies, what will I distract supervillans with?"
  • Spider-Man may state "And then there were none" after clearing an area of enemies. This is a reference to the Agatha Christie novel, And Then There Were None.
  • During battles, Spider-Man will occasionally say "Can't I get any respect around here?" with an inflection similar to Rodney Dangerfield's famous phrase.
  • There are many references to Superman in this game.
    • Sometimes when picking up civilians to rescue them, sometimes they'll say "'Is it cool to say 'Up, Up, and Away?'" This is direct reference to Superman's famous line "Up, Up, and Away!"
    • When Spider-Man slingshots himself to MechaBioCon island when he says "Look! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's...everyone's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man?" This is a reference to a line people say when they see Superman flying.
    • When you buy the Dive Bomb upgrade, Bruce Campbell says "Look! It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a foot coming right towards my face!" This is an another reference to a line people say when they see Superman flying. Although in other versions of the game he says "Look! Up in the sky! It's a foot heading straight towards my face!"
    • In the tutorial mission during the jump exercise, the narrator says that "You can now probably leap small buildings in a single bound; I mean you're not as good as that other guy, are you? Don't worry, I'm sure you have a lovely personality."

Storylines

Spider Man 3 has 13 storylines, one being the movie storyline. Some are included only on the Xbox 360/PS3/PC version, while others are included only on the Wii/PS2/PSP versions. Meanwhile, other missions, such as the Lizard and Carlyle missions (and obviously the movie missions) are on all platforms, but changed significantly between the versions.

Story missions

  • Mad Bomber - Luke Carlyle, the Mad Bomber is a man who employs men who are great at using bombs and are planning to put them all around New York, including in a chemical plant. Spider-Man manages to disarm the bombs that have been put around everywhere. Carlyle then tries to kill J. Jonah Jameson with an electric collar but Spider-Man manages to save him and blow up the helicopter. This storyline is 5 missions long.
  • Lizard - Dr. Connors tries injecting himself with an experimental serum to grow his arm back but it turns him into a giant lizard. Also mutating people on the street, Peter eventually realizes that it is his professor and tries to save him and other humans-turned-reptiles. In his Black Suit, Spider-Man also manages to save a further mutated "Ultra-Lizard" from Kraven and Calypso. This storyline is 3 missions long.
  • Morbius/Shriek - A vampire is rumoured to be hiding within New York City. Spider-Man finds and nearly defeats him by exposing him to sunlight. He saves him by taking him to Doctor Connors for examination, and there Morbius tells Spider-Man that his wife (Shriek) is responsible for his transformation. Spider-Man finds Shriek's hideout and takes Morbius there, where he fights the two of them and manages to put Morbius back into his original state. This storyline is 4 missions long and is exclusive to the Wii/PS2/PSP version.
  • Scorpion - Mac Gargan has been forcibly experimented on by MechaBioCon worker Dr. Stillwell by having a cybernetic tail fused to his back. After helping him from his mind control helmet, Spider-Man agrees to help Scorpion expose MechaBioCon as using unwilling human guinea pigs. After a battle with Rhino, Scorpion tries to kill Stillwell but Spider-Man manages to calm him down. This storyline is 3 missions long and is exclusive to the 360/PC/PS3 version.
  • Kingpin - In the Black Suit, Spider-Man finds out that the Kingpin owns nearly all three gangs. He tells them to fight Spider-Man after fighting himself then they fight each other again. As the Black Suit is making him more violent, Spider-Man flings Kingpin out of his window yet he sees nothing below. This storyline is 2 missions long and is exclusive to the 360/PC/PS3 version.
  • Movie - These missions loosely follow the plot of the movie, beginning with Peter's aerial fight against New Goblin, using the black suit in the subways to unleash his fury on Sandman and the grand finale against Sandman and Venom. For the fight against the large "Mega-Sandman", the player takes control of the New Goblin but only in the Xbox 360/PC/PS3 version. This storyline is 3 missions long.

Ally missions

  • DeWolfe - NYPD Detective Jeanne DeWolfe wants Spider-Man's "unofficial" help at finding evidence (photographs) of meetings between corrupt cops and Dragon Tails. They eventually find out that DeWolfe is using Spider-Man and tried to kill her yet Spider-Man manages to save her. This storyline is 3 missions long and is exclusive to the Xbox 360/PC/PS3 versions of the game.
  • Daily Bugle - Here, you play as Peter Parker and you are given missions from the Daily Bugle to take pictures of various events such as a UFO, a carcrash and a Lizard. This storyline is 7 missions long and is exclusive to the 360/PS3/PC versions.
  • Mary Jane Thrill Ride/Scare Ride-There are some missions that will have you taking Mary Jane to specific locations. On the Xbox 360, PC, and PS3 versions, you earn hearts by doing what she tells you to do. When gang members are near by, MJ will get scared and you have the option of putting her down and beating them up and earning more hearts. In the first thrillride mission, the symbiote attaches to Peter's shoe in the ending cutscene. There is one scare ride mission where Peter has become consumed by the suit, and when he is taking MJ home from a date that went bad, she becomes scared. She breaks up with Peter, which finally convinces him to get rid of the suit, only for it to land on Eddie Brock, who becomes Venom. This storyline is 4 missions long.
    • On the Wii/PS2/PSP versions, there are two of these missions (a thrill ride and a scare ride). Unlike on the next-gen versions, these two missions are only focused on getting MJ to her destination, instead of abiding by her requests.
  • Connors - Turned to normal after being the Lizard, Connors needs Spider-Man to cure all the people he transformed into Lizards while he was himself one. Spider-Man does eventually manage to turn everyone back to normal by spreading the cure into gas dispensers all around the city. This storyline is 2 missions long.
    • On the Wii/PS2/PSP versions, this is only one mission and does not involve Doc. Connors at all. Spider-Man merely goes around the city beating up the remaining Lizards.

Gang missions

  • Apocalypse- The cruelest, most violent sociopaths who only use brute force to stop their enemies. They also use bombs, which Spider-Man disarms, and then must go up against heavy attackers and the Apocalypse Gang's Boss. This storyline is 3 missions long.
  • Arsenic Candy - An all-girls gang who are obsessed with fashion and all fashionable things. They are planning a wedding for their leader, Priscilla and are trying to make it 'perfect'. However, under the Black Suit's influence, Spider-Man crashes the wedding and goes up against Priscilla. This storyline is 4 missions long and is only exclusive to the Xbox 360/PC/PS3 versions of the game.
  • Order of the Dragon Tail - A gang of martial artists who are after ancient, antique eastern statues and have different weapons to stop Spider-Man. In the final mission with the Black Suit, Spider-Man defeats all remaining Dragon Tail thugs and their leader, the Dragon Tail Boss. The Dragon Tail Boss, Red Dragon, is able to teleport and will summon 4 super strong dragon tails to help him. You will have to beat them before you can fight the boss. This storyline is 4 missions long.

Other Information

  • You can enter the Daily Bugle building from a door on the roof any time but only for the Xbox 360,PC, and PS3 versions of the game.
  • There is a church in Greenwich Village which is the same church as the one in the climax of the film. In the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions, the player can enter the bell tower and descend into the church. Once in the player can see the spot where Eddie Brock prays to God to "kill Peter Parker"
  • In the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 version of the game, on the roof of the Daily Bugle you can slingshot yourself across New York.
  • In the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 version of the game, you can enter Peter Parker's apartment through the window in Little Italy.
  • There is a secret hole in the wall down in the subways that enters a room with an accessible sewer hatch. This hole may be from the first game, when The Shocker blew a hole in the wall to get into the subways from the sewers.

Mistakes

In the game, there are a few things missing in virtual Manhattan. Some of them are:

1.Governors Island

  • It has been replaced with the MechaBioCon laboratory, presumably they demolished the entire island and built the lab there.

2.World Trade Center site

  • The real site is occupied by a group of buildings called the World Financial Center. However, this is incorrect as the real World Financial Center actually sits adjacent in Battery Park City and looks different than in game. In the game, the site of the real World Financial Center is occupied by the construction site where the Grand Finale takes place.

3.Lincoln Square

  • On the zoom map, you'll notice that there is an area named Lincoln Square, if you go down into the subway hatch there, the location plaque says Lincoln Circle

4.Times Square

  • On the PS2, Wii, and PSP versions of the game, there is no Times Square in the Theater District Area, although the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 versions feature the biggest Times Square in any Spider-Man game.

Differences from the film

  • In the movie, the Symbiote gets attached to Peter's license plate and then goes to Peter. In the game, it attaches to Peter's shoe while he and MJ are at the bridge in Central Park.
  • In the film, Peter finds out that Flint Marko killed Uncle Ben, but in the game, there is no backstory given to Flint, and no mention is made of Uncle Ben, until the final cutscene when Peter recounts Uncle Ben's words "With great power, comes great responsibility." The only possible back-story given for Flint is in the "Bios" extra in the DS version, where his wife and daughter are mentioned and we are told of a rough childhood.
  • In the film, Sandman turned to crime to pay for his daughter's medical care. In the game, it is never mentioned that Sandman turned to crime to pay for his daughter's medical care, and she does not appear until Venom uses her to blackmail Sandman into working with him. The "Bios" section on the DS version simply states that to Marko, Spider-Man is between him and being with his wife and daughter.
  • In the film, Spider-Man's first encounter with Sandman is in an armored truck. In the game, Spider-Man's first encounter with Sandman is in the subway system, which is their second encounter in the movie. In the DS version, Spidey does encounter Sandman at the armored truck, but does not fight Sandman -- Sandman throws the truck into a crane, sending the crane careening into an office building. Spidey jumps away from Sandman in order to save the people in the building, and Sandman apparently escapes in the meantime.
  • In the film, Peter's second encounter with Harry is at Harry's house, which causes Peter to become consumed by the black suit. In the game, they never fight a second time, and Peter instead becomes consumed while fighting Sandman.
  • In the film, Peter goes to his college professor, Dr. Curt Connors to take look at the suit specimen.
    • In the Xbox 360, PS3 & PC version of the game, Peter has managed to get rid of the black suit prior to meeting Connors again after he is no longer the Lizard.
    • In the PS2, Wii and PSP version of the game, Peter, as Spider-Man, sees Dr. Connors straight after defeating the Lizard.
  • In the film, Spider-Man grinds Sandman's head on a train. On the 360/PS3/PC version, you have a dodge opportunity in which you can mash buttons shown on screen in order to grind Sandman's head into a train.
  • In the film, Peter never calls Marko 'Sandman', but in the game, Peter calls him 'Sandman' all the time.
  • The character of Gwen Stacy, who appeared in the film, does not appear or get mentioned in the game.
  • In the film, Eddie Brock is fired from the Daily Bugle after editing a photograph to frame Spider-Man for a bank robbery.
    • In the 360/PS3/PC version of the game, Eddie does not actually get fired, and he never actually sells any fake pictures; however, he pays someone to dress up as Spider-Man so he can take pictures to frame Spider-Man for a robbery, but Spider-Man stops him, prompting Eddie to vow to get revenge.
    • In the Ps2/Wii/PSP version, Eddie dresses himself as Spider-Man to frame him for causing trouble all over town. He gets fired when Jameson confronts him in his office.
    • In the DS/GBA version, the reason Eddie hates Spider-Man is left unclear.
  • In the film, Mary Jane breaks up with Peter after Harry Osborn threatens her. In the game, she does so after the black suit takes over and begins influencing Peter's behavior entirely.
  • In the film, Eddie Brock learns that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, when Eddie sees Peter's face after taking off the symbiote mask. In the game, even though Eddie never sees Spider-Man without a mask, he somehow knows Spider-Man is Peter Parker, probably knowledge from the suit.
  • In the film, Sandman agrees to work with Venom due to Spider-Man stopping him from stealing the money to pay for his daughter's medical care, resulting in the kidnapping of Mary Jane Watson. In the game, Venom blackmails Sandman into helping kill Spider-Man by kidnapping his daughter, and holding her hostage alongside Mary Jane. In the DS version, Sandman simply agrees to help Venom, however, in the last fight, he is obviously not enthusiastic about attempting to kill Spider-Man. Also note that Sandman washed away in the film. He is seen reforming in mud before Peter gets rid of the black suit. In the game, he just reappears on a bench.
  • In the film, Harry suffers from amnesia due to hitting his head during his fight with Peter, before eventually regaining his memories. He is told by his butler that his father died by his own hand, after Peter asks for his help in fighting Venom & Sandman.
    • In the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 version of the game, Harry never makes any reference to whether he knows if his father killed himself or not, is never asked by Peter for his help against Venom & Sandman, but like the film, he is at his home prior to the fight. He goes to help Peter after hearing about it on the news.
  • In the film, Harry dies after wounds suffered by jumping in front of the Sky Stick when Venom attempts to stab Peter with it.
    • In the 360/PC/PS3 version, Harry again saves Peter from Venom, but Venom subdues him in web and clotheslines him from the building. The fall presumably killed him.
    • In the PS2/Wii/PSP versions, Harry was about to detonate a pumpkin bomb to Sandman until Venom captures him and tosses him to Sandman, killing him as the bomb detonates to Sandman.
  • In the film, Eddie Brock appears to die after trying to re-bond with the Venom symbiote as a pumpkin bomb destroys the symbiote.
    • In the Xbox 360, PC and PS3 version of the game, he falls on some jagged poles at the end of an air fight with Spider-Man, impaling himself.
    • In the PS2/Wii/PSP versions, once his health bar has gone down it shows a cutscene of Brock saying "I couldn't control it" and then he dies. The symbiote disappears.
  • In the film, Spider-Man & New Goblin fight Venom & Sandman at a construction yard, with Spider-Man's fight with Venom taking place inside the building under construction. In the Wii & PS2 version of the game, Spider-Man fights Venom in the construction yard itself, and not the building.
  • In the film, Venom's voice was Topher Grace's voice, but slightly deeper. In the game, Eddie's voice receives a distortion effect when turned into Venom. The DS version uses a normal version of Topher Grace's voice.
  • In the film, the construction site is located somewhere in Midtown as when Harry dies and the camera pans outward, the Empire State Building's west side is clearly visible on the left side of the screen. The construction site is also, as a reporter stated, some 80 stories.
    • In the 360/PC/PS3 versions of the game, the construction site has been moved to the southern end of the island and is right in the same spot of the World Financial Center. The WFC, however - while present in the second game - is not there. The skyscraper is also significantly under 80 stories high and is closer to 30.
    • In the PS2/Wii/PSP versions of the game, the skyscraper is on the eastern side of Lower Manhattan, opposite its position in the next-gen versions. The skyscraper is roughly the same height & design, with a few minor changes (eg. it is not possible to go inside the tower).
  • In the film, Peter plans to propose to Mary Jane for marriage, and Aunt May gives him her ring to do so. In the game, Peter never shows any desire to propose, and Aunt May is not even mentioned. In the Xbox360/PC/PS3 versions, Peter is leaving the Columbia Unveristy as opposed to Aunt May's apartment after getting the wedding ring, like in the film.
  • In the film, at the construction site, when Spider-Man arrives Brock reveals himself to be Venom. In the game though, Spider-Man automatically knows that Venom is in fact Brock upon arrival. This may be because, in the 360/PC/PS3 versions of the game, show Spider-Man looking over the edge of the bell-shaped hole, possibly seeing Eddie swallowing the symbiote.
  • In the film, Eddie gets the suit on him before it crawls down his throat and into his insides, in the game, it just falls from Peter's body into Eddie's mouth and down his throat, before he panics.
  • In the film, Eddie goes to the church to pray for Peter's death. But in the game, he sees Spiderman swinging into the church and goes in to investigate.
  • Spider-Man first fought Sandman without the black suit, but in all versions, he fought the Sandman after he got the black suit. Except in the PS2 and Wii versions in which he fights Sandman for the first part of the fight, thinking he can defeat him without the black-suit. But in the end, he becomes enraged and ends up putting on the black-suit anyway.
  • In the film, Peter makes a move on Betty under the influence of the suit after he broke up with MJ, to which she accepts his advances, yet in the game (360/PC/PS3) Peter does this before he breaks up with MJ, and she rejects his advances.
