List of colleges and universities in Massachusetts
In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, there are 117 colleges and universities currently operating. This figure includes fifteen universities, four art schools, and three law schools, as well as a number of undergraduate associates and baccalaureate colleges. Although there are many schools currently operating, many other schools have closed or merged.
The state's five public universities are administered by the University of Massachusetts system, which is the largest provider of postsecondary education in the state. Massachusetts is also served by a network of fifteen public community colleges. The oldest school in the state is Harvard University, a member of the Ivy League and the only Massachusetts institution founded before the American Revolution. The newest is the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, founded in 1997. Enrollment sizes range from small Conway School of Landscape Design, with 19 students, to Boston University, a private school which serves over 30,000 students.
