They were later re-released in the United States, starting in 2002. Paramount Home Entertainment began releasing the seasons in Australia in October 2007. This article contains information on the season sets. Each of the box sets have three discs.

Season 1

South Park was initially released in the United States by Rhino DVD in 1999. They released six single-DVD packages, which were also packaged together as Season One (three DVDs) and Season Two (three DVDs). The 1st South Park box set released in Europe was on 7 May 2001. Unrated in the United States and 14A in Canada, where it was released on November 12, 2002 on Warner Bros., and later re-released on Paramount Home Entertainment on June 29, 2004, in English Dolby Stereo with the option of English, Spanish or French subtitles and contains all 13 episodes from South Park's first season. The European release contained no extra features other than the introductions by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, in which they called nearly all the episodes "one of their [all-time] favorite episodes." The first season was re-released by Paramount Home Entertainment on Region 2 DVD on October 22 2007. The first season (along with the second and the tenth) was released in Australia on October 4, 2007.

Audio commentary

Full-length commentaries were recorded by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, but they felt that they were of poor quality [5]. However, they were available on five CDs for a limited offer, by sending in an order form that was found on the official website, the proofs of purchases found within the DVD set and $3.50.[citation needed]

  • Review of Season 1 DVD and Audio Commentaries: [4]

Mislabeling

The DVD box lists the episodes by production order, while the actual episodes are arranged on the DVDs in a different order: The box labels "Volcano" before "Weight Gain 4000"; The box labels "Starvin' Marvin" on Disc 3, listing "Damien" in its place on Disc 2. This has later been fixed on later manufacturing runs of this DVD boxed set.

Season 2

Season 2 was released on DVD in Europe on April 16, 2001 on Warner Vision International with no extra features. Trey and Matt state on the Season 3 commentary, that while they felt there were good episodes in Season 2, they found most to be poor in retrospect. It was released in the United States on June 3, 2003 on Warner Bros. and was re-released with the 1st season on June 29, 2004. The second season was re-released by Paramount Home Entertainment on Region 2 DVD on 22 October 2007 And is rated 15 by the BBFC (disc 3 is rated 12).[5]. This season (along with seasons 1 and 10) was released in Australia on October 4, 2007. Language/subtitle options are the same as Season 1, as well as the ratings. This is the only Season of South Park where no commentaries by the creators are known to be recorded. Every season hereafter included Mini-Commentaries.

Season 3

The 3rd South Park box set was released on June 18 2001 in Europe on Warner Vision International with no special features and December 16, 2003 in the US on Paramount Home Entertainment only (no Warner Bros. release, to date all US South Park DVD box sets from Season 3 onwards have been released on Paramount Home Entertainment only). The third season was re-released by Paramount Home Entertainment on Region 2 DVD on 17 March 2008.[citation needed] The 3rd season was expected to be rated 18 by the BBFC due to the episode World Wide Recorder Concert but it was re-rated 15 for the Season 3 Re-Release by Paramount [6]. There are no subtitles but English Dolby Stereo, Spanish Mono and French Dolby Stereo audio tracks are available along with an optional commentary from the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone on every episode. The commentaries are unique in that they are "mini commentaries", which last about four or five minutes. This box set is Unrated in the United States but is an 18A in Canada because of the finale, World Wide Recorder Concert. The third season DVD was released on March 20 along with Season 4 in Australia.

Season 7

Released on March 21, 2006 and on June 16 2008 in the UK. Two basic designs have been changed in this boxset, the front cover and the disc character (see below). The region 2 release is also the first out of the "new" Paramount releases (and so far last) to be rated 18 by the BBFC due to the commentaries on disc 3 having stronger language than the episodes.[citation needed]

Box

Unlike Seasons 1 through 6, the Season 7 box has a hole in it so when the digipack is out of the slipcase, you only see a hole in the front of the box. When inserted, you see Stan, Kyle and Kenny through the hole. (Pictures, right, from top to bottom: Front, back, front without the digipack, digipack outside the slipcase) The box is also the first cover not to feature Cartman. The digipack also features Jimmy and Timmy dressed like the Crips.

Disc designs

Also different in the Season 7 of South Park boxset is the disc character. Previous boxes had a specific character on all of the discs:

  • Season 1- Kenny
  • Season 2- Cartman
  • Season 3- Stan
  • Season 4- Timmy
  • Season 5- Kyle
  • Season 6- Butters

On Season 7 however, Cartman is on Disc 1, Kenny on Disc 2 and Stan is on Disc 3.

Season 8

The complete eighth season was released on August 29, 2006 and on September 15, 2008 in the UK.

Box

Season 8's box is again different from any other season's box. The slipcase has the 4 main boys dressed up like ninjas from Good Times With Weapons. The digipack has a picture of the boys in their Japanese anime format. There is no hole in the slipcase so the digipack shows through, as there was in the Season 7 disc set.

Disc designs

The design for the discs are different like Season 7. This season, each disc design highlights different episodes on those discs. AWESOM-O and Butters are on Disc 1, the Douche and the Turd mascots are on Disc 2 and Stan and the Woodland Critters from Woodland Critter Christmas are on Disc 3.

Season 9

South Park's 9th Season DVD, was released March 6, 2007 in the US. In Europe, it was released on January 28, 2009. It was the First South Park Season in the UK to ever have Violence Included in the BBFC Contents Box as the Season was Rated 15 by the BBFC.

Season 11

The South Park Season 11 DVD was released on August 12, 2008. The Australian release date was October 9, 2008. However, season 11 was released in the UK on June 22, 2009, and every episode is uncensored for the first time ever on DVD.[citation needed] TVShowsonDVD.com erroneously reported the set would include a three song download pack for the video game Rock Band, however this was later corrected. In addition to mini commentary by Matt and Trey, special features consist of 4 Comedy Central "quickies":

Target has released a special version of the DVD set with a lenticular cover.

The DVD cover is the first to feature Stan and Kyle exclusively, the second to exclude Cartman (along with Season 7), and also the second to exclude Kenny (the other being Season 6.)

South Park The Hits: Volume 1

Comedy Central Home Entertainment Celebrates 10 Years of "South Park" with the DVD release of "South Park the Hits: Volume 1" featuring Matt and Trey's 10 favorite episodes, four fan favorite episodes and, for the first time ever, "The Spirit of Christmas" (Jesus vs. Santa) animated short.

Episodes

Includes Emmy Award-Winning "Best Friends Forever," Emmy-Nominated "Trapped in the Closet," four bonus episodes and new audio commentary from Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

  • "Stupid Spoiled Whore Video Playset" - Stone: "Most of the time when people ask us about, you know, ripping on celebrities and featuring celebrities in the show, I always say, 'Well, you know, it's not personal. It's just ripping on the idea of celebrity itself. You know, it's just kind of this absurdist thing that we do.' But then you look at this episode and it really isn't that. We have to stop little girls from looking up to Paris Hilton."
  • "The Return of the Lord of the Rings to the Two Towers" - Parker: "This episode is just a perfect example, to us, about how much fun the show can be when it's just kids being kids."
  • "Best Friends Forever" - Parker: "We went out to the animation staff and we're like, 'Okay, good news. We've come up with a show idea for this week. It's going to be a final battle between heaven and hell.' And they were just like, 'Oh, shit.'"
  • "Good Times with Weapons" - Parker: "The thing I'm most proud of in this episode is the song. I think we hit the song perfectly. I think we got the anime pretty good, but that song..."
  • "AWESOM-O" - Stone: "This episode has one of my favorite scenes of any 'South Park' ever...which is when Cartman gets off the plane. He gets to Los Angeles and he has to eat the toothpaste 'cause he's so fucking hungry. That just totally makes sense that you'd be that hungry where you'd just eat toothpaste."
  • "Trapped in the Closet" - Parker: "We're pretty sure it's going be one of our most infamous ever, I think, just because of all the hubbub it caused. I don't think we've ever had a single episode that has stirred up this much unwanted and wanted attention."
  • "Towelie" - Parker: "We rented a houseboat on Lake Mead with a bunch of our friends who are also writers on South Park and we were getting into a boat, and everyone was like, 'Yeah, did you bring a towel?' And then people just started going, 'Don't forget to bring a towel?' And that, for some reason that caught on and then it became, 'Towelie says, don't forget to bring a towel.' And then that became 'Towelie.'"
  • "Red Hot Catholic Love" - Parker: "For some reason we thought the imagery of someone crapping out their mouth would work ultimately in a show. And then luckily a bunch of priests got caught molesting kids. And we're like, 'Bingo.'"
  • "Scott Tenorman Must Die" - Parker: "This is a very important episode in the 'South Park' library because it did definitely change Cartman. I mean, it took him from kind of a little shit head to probably the most evil kid in the world."

Four Featured Fan Episodes:

Disc design

This is the first time that Comedy Central decided to go with a plain disc design. The discs simply read "South Park: The Hits Volume 1" and are similar for both discs. However behind the discs is a picture of one of the South Park Characters. This is also the first time that Comedy Central decided to have a chrome-finish on the DVD, instead of their matte with glossy characters.
